This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

Why Dental Public Health at Dundee?

This course is unique to Scotland and is a joint venture between the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU) and the School of Dentistry.

Both DSHRU and the School of Dentistry are world renowned and have formal links with the World Health Organisation (WHO). DHSRU has made long term contributions to oral epidemiology and public health, caries diagnosis and management and, in particular, to practice-based dental research and evidence based dentistry. DHSRU remains unique in dentistry, in the UK and internationally, by maintaining a long term portfolio of projects focusing on matters of importance to health services and providers of routine dental care.

Using the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Programme strapline 'think global act local', the course will provide you with the necessary Dental Public Health knowledge, understanding and skills to develop a country specific oral health strategy to promote oral health and reduce oral health inequality.

Who should study this course?

The MDPH is designed to attract dental practitioners with a policy and research interest in Dental Public Health. In particular there is support for specialty trainees in Dental Public Health undertaking this course during their training in Tayside and elsewhere. The course structure is compatible with specialist training and therefore will be attractive to dentists hoping to undertake CSST to obtain specialist/consultant status.

In keeping with the current increase in interest in Dental Public Health in the UK and globally this course will also be appropriate for other dental health professionals and to social scientists wishing to work with in the Dental Public Health environment.

Teaching & Assessment

The Masters in Dental Public Health is a joint venture taught by staff in both the Dental Health Services Research Unit and the School of Dentistry both of which are world renowned.

The full time MDPH course lasts for one year. The taught component takes around seven months and is followed by research leading to a dissertation. All students initially enrol on a diploma programme (PGDipDPH) which includes the taught component only. To progress to the Masters programme and undertake the Masters dissertation students must obtain an overall pass of 60% in the taught component. Both programmes may be undertaken on a part-time basis.

A variety of teaching methods will be used including lectures, tutorials, discussion groups, self-directed learning including the use of internet based resources and supervised research.

The programme of studies will provide structured support sessions for students who encounter difficulties. In addition, students are encouraged to contact lecturers to raise specific questions.

Students studying for an MDPH then undertake research and write a dissertation.

How you will be assessed

Performance is monitored by continuous assessment throughout the programme. Written and oral examinations are held in December, March and May. Examinations are graded passes (A to D) or fail.

Students must obtain grade D or above in all written and oral examinations in order to be awarded the Diploma.

To be eligible to progress from the Diploma onto the Masters, students must pass the examination of each subject and achieve a minimum overall pass at B or above (60%).

The Masters in Dental Public Health will enable students to develop careers in government-based/national public health programmes of Dental Public Health as well as those wishing to following the academic pathway in Dental Public Health.

What you will study

The MSc will be taught full-time over one year (September to August). Semester one (Modules 1 – 4) and Semester 2A, 2B (Modules 5 – 8) will provide participants with wide ranging, in-depth knowledge of oral biology, together with focused training in research (lab-base, dissertation or e- Learning) and its associated methodology. The MSc course is built largely on new modules (5) supported by 2 modules run conjointly with the Centre for Medical Education within the Medical School. All modules are compulsory:

The project is designed to encourage students to further develop their skills. This could take the form of a supervised laboratory research project, a literature based dissertation or an educational project. The educational project would be based around the development of an innovative learning resource utilising the experience of the dental school learning technologist.

How you will be assessed

Exams on the taught element of the programme will be held at the end of semester one. Essays and assignments will also contribute to the final mark, and the dissertation will be assessed through the production of a thesis and a viva exam.

The MSc Oral Biology is aimed at dental or science graduates who are either early in their careers or wish to establish themselves as oral biologists within dental schools. Oral Biology is a recognised discipline in many dental schools worldwide. Graduates will have gained sufficient knowledge and skills to enable them to be teachers, innovators and educational leaders in the field. This established MSc programme, taught by scientists and clinicians who are leaders in their field, offers students the opportunity to learn about topical areas in cardiovascular science, preparing them for further research or a career in industry.

Degree information

Students will develop a detailed knowledge of molecular and cellular cardiovascular science, animal models of cardiovascular disease, microvascular biology and mechanisms by which the heart and vasculature function in health and disease, as well as laboratory and statistical methods. They will gain valuable research skills and an awareness of the ethical, legal and social aspects of developments in cardiovascular disease.

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words and an oral presentation (60 credits).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, presentations, tutorials, journal clubs, a quiz, statistical and laboratory practicals and anatomical examination of human congenital heart disease specimens. Assessment is through written and oral examinations, coursework essays, case reports, journal club and other oral presentations and the dissertation.

Using the process of scientific reasoning as its framework, the programme will integrate the key issues central to the theoretical aspects in these specialist areas with communication skills, management approaches, timely and reasoned decision making, identification of treatment options, best practice etc.

You will have the opportunity to tailor your learning experiences and backgrounds to meet your own personal and professional needs. You will also have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills within a multidisciplinary setting that cares for trauma-afflicted patients. Enquiry-, evidence-based learning will be a key feature of the programme through problem based learning and journal clubs. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in a substantive research project, allowing you to develop research skills, project management, oral/poster presentation and writing a research dissertation. Research projects may be undertaken in an academic laboratory or can be in a clinical setting.

The rise of trauma:

The incidence of trauma continues to rise. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2020 trauma will become the leading cause of death worldwide due to ageing in Western populations, increasing road use in developing countries and conflict. In England alone there are at least 20,000 cases of major trauma each year resulting in 5,400 deaths and many others resulting in permanent disabilities requiring long-term care. There are around a further 28,000 cases which, although not meeting the precise definition of major trauma, would be cared for in the same way.

Major trauma costs the NHS between £0.3 and £0.4 billion a year in immediate treatment, but when considering the costs of subsequent hospital treatments, rehabilitation, home care support, informal carer costs and the annual lost economic output as a result of major trauma is estimated to be between £3.3 and £3.7 billion (National Audit Office, Major Trauma Care in England, 2010).

Neurotrauma alone - including mild traumatic brain injury, which does not fit into the definition of major trauma - is the leading cause of death and disability in the first 4 decades of life and is estimated to cost the UK economy £8 billion a year (more than stroke). Many countries around the world now recognise the importance of trauma research to their health care systems and are developing specialist research programmes of to meet the growing needs of their population. This expansion in specialist clinical provision is generating demand for professionals with a recognised background of trauma sciences training.

The School of Health and Human Sciences is located at two sites; in the Kimmy Eldridge building at our Colchester Campus and in the Gateway Building at our Southend Campus.

The Oral Health Science facilities are centred in the Gateway Building, and MSc Periodontology is taught not only at our Southend Campus but also in our purpose built academic dental clinic. We offer clinical laboratories with the very latest equipment and IT facilities - in particular, a state-of-the-art dental skills lab with the latest simulation ‘phantom heads’ to practise on.

The programme is delivered in the School of Dental Sciences, the Centre for Oral Health Research (COHR) and the Faculty in addition to the relevant Biomedical Research Institutes for: Ageing; Cell and Molecular Biosciences; Cellular Medicine; Health and Society; Genetic Medicine; Neurosciences; Cancer.

Research Areas

COHR has a particular focus on understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms and translating these into clinical settings. Evaluation of clinical, community and economic strategies to improve public health and inform a wider health agenda is a central research theme. Within COHR there is a Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organization for Nutrition and Oral Health.

Research projects are strongly aligned to the Centre's main research themes: translational oral biosciences; oral healthcare and epidemiology; biomaterials and biological interfaces.

COHR is involved in a number of industrial collaborations. We also work together with the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit to provide planning, design and implementation of clinical trials in oral health.

The MRes will develop skills for health services research and be especially suitable for those who wish to study for a PhD subsequently but have limited experience of research.

The MRes comprises 6 course units and a dissertation [180 credits in total]:

-Dissertation/project [90 credits]

Biomedical Scientists are regulated, on behalf of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), by the IBMS.

Why Study Biomedical Science with us?

You will receive training in the skills required in the reading and interpretation of the literature and translating that into evidencebased practice. We aim to develop your research and writing skills so that you will be in a position to contribute to the scientific literature in an effective manner.

Our course culminates in the Research Dissertation, which will be assessed through your production of two publishable scientific articles. Our aim will be to develop these to publication with you if suitable.

Biomedical Scientists are in demand in the healthcare service (NHS and National Blood Service), medical research, pharmaceutical industry, and organisations such as the Health Protection Agency, Medical Research Council and the Health and Safety Executive. On graduation you may also wish to continue with your education with a PGCE, PhD, dental or medical degree.

What will I learn?

Our modules cover a wide range of scientific subjects, information technology and all the major disciplines of biomedical science – i.e. cellular pathology, clinical chemistry, clinical medicine, haematology and transfusion science, histology, immunology, and medical microbiology. You will be encouraged to address assignments through your chosen discipline.

How will I be taught?

Our course consists of taught modules and a Research Dissertation.

We deliver taught modules as three-day intensive courses to facilitate attendance from students in employment. Weekly support sessions and journal club supplement learning – all held in our modern facilities in Bache Hall on the Countess of Chester Hospital Campus.
Total contact hours for the whole course are 360 hours, out of a total study time of 1,800 hours.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via coursework assignments, which may focus on clinical reviews, laboratory reports, posters, oral presentations, or data manipulation exercises.
