Why study Oral Biology at Dundee?

This course is specifically designed for individuals who wish to pursue career pathways in academic oral biology, with a focus, though not exclusively, on developing individuals who can deliver and, more importantly, lead oral biology courses within dental schools.

Oral Biology is a significant subject area that is integral to undergraduate and postgraduate dental training worldwide. The scope of Oral Biology includes a range of basic and applied sciences that underpin the practise of dentistry. These subjects include: oral and dental anatomy; craniofacial and dental development; oral physiology; oral neuroscience; oral microbiology. These subjects will be integrated with the relevant disease processes, for example, craniofacial anomalies, dental caries and tooth surface loss.

This programme focuses on the research and education experience of the staff in the Dental School in Dundee. Such expertise lies in the fields of craniofacial development and anomalies; pain and jaw muscle control; salivary physiology; cancer biology; microbiology; cariology and tooth surface loss.

In addition it makes use of the extensive resources available for postgraduate programmes: extensive histological collections; virtual microscopy; oral physiology facilities; cell biology and dental materials laboratories.

Who should study this course?

The MSc in Oral Biology is for graduates who wish to pursue a career in academic oral biology. The course will be of particular interest for those wishing to establish themselves as oral biology teachers, innovators and course leaders within a dental school.

Teaching and Assessment

The Dental School is well placed to deliver such a course with an established staff of teaching and research active within oral biology, and its related fields, an in-house e-learning technologist and substantial links to the Centre for Medical Education in the School of Medicine. There will be an opportunity for students to exit with a PGCert in Oral Biology after successful completion of modules 1 -4 or a Diploma in Oral Biology after successful completion of modules 1 - 7.

How you will be taught

The programme will be delivered via a blend of methodologies including: face-to-face lectures / seminars / tutorials; on-line learning; directed and self- directed practical work; self-directed study; journal clubs.
What you will study

The MSc will be taught full-time over one year (September to August). Semester one (Modules 1 – 4) and Semester 2A, 2B (Modules 5 – 8) will provide participants with wide ranging, in-depth knowledge of oral biology, together with focused training in research (lab-base, dissertation or e- Learning) and its associated methodology. The MSc course is built largely on new modules (5) supported by 2 modules run conjointly with the Centre for Medical Education within the Medical School. All modules are compulsory:

Semester 1:

Module 1: Academic skills 1: principles of learning and teaching (15 credits)
Module 2: Cranio-facial development and anomalies (15 credits)
Module 3: Dental and periodontal tissues, development and structure (20 credits)
Module 4: Oral mucosa and disorders (10 credits)

Semesters 2A and 2B

Module 5a: Academic skills 2a: principles of assessment (15 credits)
Module 5b: Academic Skills 2b:educational skills
Module 6: Neuroscience (20 credits)
Module 7: Oral environment and endemic oral disease (20 credits)
Module 8: Project (60 credits)

The project is designed to encourage students to further develop their skills. This could take the form of a supervised laboratory research project, a literature based dissertation or an educational project. The educational project would be based around the development of an innovative learning resource utilising the experience of the dental school learning technologist.

How you will be assessed

Exams on the taught element of the programme will be held at the end of semester one. Essays and assignments will also contribute to the final mark, and the dissertation will be assessed through the production of a thesis and a viva exam.

Careers

The MSc Oral Biology is aimed at dental or science graduates who are either early in their careers or wish to establish themselves as oral biologists within dental schools. Oral Biology is a recognised discipline in many dental schools worldwide. Graduates will have gained sufficient knowledge and skills to enable them to be teachers, innovators and educational leaders in the field. In addition, successful graduates will be well placed to undertake further postgraduate study at PhD level. In some cases, this may possible within the existing research environments within the Dental School, the wider College of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing and the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification of the University of Dundee.

This is an established and popular modular course in fixed and removable prosthodontics and is suitable for dentists contemplating an academic career or to improve your clinical practice. You will develop enhanced skills and understanding of the scientific basis and practice of prosthodontics so that you become competent in the diagnosis and treatment of more complex problems.

This course will help you build upon the skills you earned in your dental undergraduate course and develop these skills in a clinical environment.

The staff teaching this course are experienced in diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function in patients with a range of dental problems. You will receive close supervision and support when treating patients throughout the course. All clinical facilities, equipment and materials are provided.

The School of Dentistry at the University of Dundee is based in the Dental School and Hospital and is located on the University's city campus. The Dental School, which was inaugurated in 1916, is at the forefront of research, teaching and clinical dental practice and benefits from being an integral part of the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught by staff in the School of Dentistry.

The course is two years long and begins every second year, in September (2012, 2014, 2016 etc), and finishes at the end of June in the second year. Teaching follows the European week, i.e. Mondays to Fridays inclusive.

How you will be taught

Students will attend lectures, seminars and laboratory demonstrations. Students will treat patients under supervision on two half days per week, and carry out some of the laboratory work as advised by course tutors. More than one module may be taught concurrently and clinical work will be undertaken on regular sessions throughout the course.

Provision will be made for personal study time throughout the course and students are expected to make good use of this time to prepare for the assessments and to read widely on the subject of prosthodontics.

What you will study

Every candidate for the Degree shall be required to undertake the prescribed course of study and submit a dissertation. Candidates will be required to present themselves for examination, including oral examination.

The various aspects of fixed prosthodontics will be performed on a phantom head before proceeding to the clinic as it is considered important to thoroughly revise techniques to ensure a high standard of clinical work. This includes endodontics, post preparation, core build-ups and preparations for inlays, crowns, bridges and resin-retained bridges.

There are eight modules, all of which must be completed satisfactorily, together with a research project. The modules and their associated SCQF (the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework) credits are as follows:

Radiology Decontamination and infection control
Communication and IT skills
Clinical photography
Dental caries - diagnosis and management
Periodontal disease - diagnosis and management
Treatment planning in Restorative Dentistry
Health care law and administration
Complete dentures (20 credits)
Partial dentures (20 credits)
Operative and adhesive dentistry (20 credits)
Endodontics (20 credits)
Laboratory-fabricated restorations (20 credits)
Applied dental materials (20 credits)
Dentistry for the elderly (10 credits)
Dissertation, including research methods and basic statistics (30 credits)

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be comprised of a one-hour written short-answer examination for each taught module. Reports of four cases treated by the candidate will be presented to the external examiner at the final examination at the end of the course.

Students carry out a research project related to fixed and removable prosthodontics or dental materials and produce a typed and bound dissertation. This will include a critical review of the literature. It is anticipated that the proportion of time spent on the research project should be approximately 25% of the course.

The results of the module assessments and the logbook of clinical activity will be scrutinised by the examiners.

All components will carry equal weighting and candidates must achieve a pass in all examination.

Careers

This course provides good preparation for the MFDS examination of the Royal Colleges but is not approved for eligibility to sit the MRD examination.

Our course will enable you to develop advanced skills and knowledge in restorative dentistry. Building on basic principles, the course provides consultant-led clinical and laboratory practice. You will undertake restorative cases requiring both routine and complex treatments. This involves treatment planning, clinical procedures and technical work.

The course has a substantial clinical component with clinically related sessions accounting for 60%. Specialists and consultants provide clinical teaching and supervision, supported by a comprehensive seminar programme. You can find profiles of our staff on the School of Dental Sciences website.

We provide an evidence base for restorative dentistry and opportunities for applied research. The research element of the course contributes to 40% of the final mark. You will undertake a research project that contributes to the Centre of Oral Health Research (COHR) research profile. You will also have the opportunity to work with internationally renowned researchers in the COHR.

This programme aims to give you a scientific understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of cancer, its epidemiology and pathology, and to place this in a clinical context. You will then address how this knowledge effects therapeutic approaches and disease management.

It aims to allow you to understand the research process by drawing on examples within the department and its associated clinical trials unit. A key part of this Masters programme is the planning, execution and reporting of a piece of independent study leading to submission of a dissertation.

At all levels we aim to encourage interactive rather than didactic learning and lecturing. Therefore, in addition to assembling and learning facts you will also to consider some of the philosophical challenges which underlie the treatment of cancer.

The programme is studied part time over 2 years and includes a taught element plus a work place based dissertation. This is made up of 4 residential taught modules per year (8 in total). Taught modules consist of one or two 5 day blocks Monday to Friday approximately 9am - 5.30pm. The total taught element consists of 45-55 days of attendance over the whole programme depending on your choice of optional modules.

You can opt for a Postgraduate Diploma on completion of the core modules and 40 credits of optional modules, or an MSc on successful completion of the taught programme and an independently researched dissertation.

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health offers a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master in Public Health.

Designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field, students attend compulsory modules then choose from a wide range of approved modules. Students also have to attend a non assessed introductory week at the beginning of the course which provides an introduction to Public Health in particular in the context of health services in the UK (29 September 2014).

If you wish to study this programme to Postgraduate Diploma level then you will need to complete the taught elements of the programme but will not need to complete a dissertation.

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health is designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field.

As well as practising clinicians, the course may be of considerable value for those involved (or thinking about becoming involved) in senior management in health services, as it covers most aspects of population health including epidemiology, statistics, health economics and health service management. Its modular nature allows the flexibility for participants to shape the programme to fit their needs in a way that ensures maximum utility with minimum disruption. Moreover, the course is delivered in an environment that combines the pragmatism and ‘can do’ spirit of a modern dynamic health service with the rigour, discipline, and high standards of a premier Russell Group University. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

The MPH programme can be studied either full-time, part-time or over up to five years by flexible learning. Overseas students may only study the MPH full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks.

Physician Associate (formerly known as Physician Assistant) is a rapidly growing healthcare role in the UK, working alongside doctors in hospitals and in GP surgeries. Physician Associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. They are trained to perform a number of roles including: taking medical histories, performing examinations, analysing test results, and diagnosing illnesses under the direct supervision of a doctor.

The course leaders regard integration of theory and practice as fundamental to clinical learning.

- This course is two, full time, calendar years in duration, each lasting approximately 48 weeks, plus an additional month. You can expect to be studying 50+ hours per week.
- Theory is learned mostly through case/problem based learning and you will experience medicine in both hospital and community attachments.

- Throughout the course, you will receive teaching in a variety of forms, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, and bedside demonstrations.
- Simulation is fundamental to this course, using simulated patients (who will teach you communication and examination skills, including gynaecological and urological examination). Simulation aims both to prepare you for the clinical world and to train you in a safe, non-threatening environment.
- Progression exams are undertaken at the nine months mark, and again at twenty-three months into the course. Students are required to pass both sets of examinations prior to entry into the National Assessment.
- Assessment types will include Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper(s), Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), Case Write-Ups, Presentations and Professional Behaviour sign-offs.

Why study Healthcare Law and Ethics at Dundee?

Healthcare Law and Ethics is concerned with how the law regulates certain aspects of healthcare practice, why it does so, and whether it does so effectively, and in accordance with ethical principles.

The programme has been devised to accommodate busy healthcare professionals. Unlike other programmes, this one is not open to law graduates, but has been designed specifically for those whose first degree is in a healthcare subject such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, etc.

The programme aims to give you an understanding and appreciation of law and ethics as they apply to professional practice. It will help you understand legal and ethical concepts, terminology and sources of law.

It is offered on a part-time, modular basis with the emphasis being on Distance Learning. This flexibility allows you to study at a time and place of your own choosing and at a pace that is comfortable for you.

This course aims to prepare you for a role in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education as teacher and trainer, according to the best clinical and educational standards.

To achieve this you will:

- study the sciences basic to education, behaviour and clinical enquiry
- acquire an understanding of the theoretical basis of learning and teaching, and the practical application of these skills
- gain knowledge and practical application of the technology required for efficient and innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Masters students take three core modules ("Teaching and Learning: Core Theory and Practice", "Effective Learning and Assessment", "Research Methods"), and then choose a further two elective modules from a choice of five.

Once the taught components of the course have been completed, Masters students then undertake a research and dissertation module involving a relevant, original investigation or development in the field of medical education.

The Masters Medical Education can be completed in one year of full-time study or over two years part-time.

On the MSc HPE programme, the dissertation will require a systematic review, synthesis and critique of the literature, to produce a policy document, a set of practitioner guidelines, or a new theoretical model.

On the MSc HPE (with Research), the dissertation will be a standard report of empirical research, incorporating a critical literature review, methodology, analysis and interpretation of findings, and conclusions drawn.
◾Applicants will not need to commit to a specific programme until the beginning of Year 2. Indeed, all applicants will initially be registered on the MSc HPE programme, with the option to switch to the ‘with Research’ variant.
◾Summative assessment varies amongst courses, but includes coursework; quality contributions to online activities; a blog; online presentations; and the dissertation.
◾We will additionally offer an optional, non-assessed residential activity, which current or prospective students may attend. This will help establish a cohort identity and will provide a showcase for masters’ students to present their work.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. Consequently there is a high emphasis on student participation in all modules with a self-directed approach to learning being essential if you are to achieve the aims of the course within the one year timeframe. Our expectation is that you are active and engaged learners. Staff will expect you to attend class thoroughly prepared having reviewed the relevant directed study. In class you will engage with the module material undertaking activities and discussions to help you gain a deeper understanding of the issues and potential solutions. When in class you will be expected to contribute to discussions by asking questions, offering your point of view and sharing your experiences and knowledge. Key guest speakers are invited to join the modules to bring topical and current issues to the learning experience.

If you study this course online then you will be taught via our virtual learning environment CampusMoodle, where you will work both individually and within a group environment, with formal and informal sessions. You will take part in online tutorial sessions through the virtual classroom utilising innovative technologies to facilitate engagement and encourage discussion and debate.

Accreditation by the IUHPE (International Union for Health Promotion Education) means you can be confident that the course meets IUHPE Core Competencies and Professional Standards. This will support your own competence and mobility in Health Promotion practice globally. As a student you would be able to join the IUHPE Student and Early Career Network (ISECN) and on successful completion of the course you can apply for registration with IUHPE giving you professional accreditation and access to a wide range of resources.

The course is also recognised by the Royal Society for Public Health, the world's longest established public health body, which has a multi-disciplinary professional membership dedicated to improvement of the public's health and wellbeing.
