Our postgraduate Dental Implantology course provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI). Students can choose to study for an MSc or a PGDip.

Dental Implantology aims to develop a critical understanding and the ability to evaluate the clinical theory, practice and associated research applied to the practice of dental implantology as a mode of referred treatment. Our postgraduate course will provide you with the opportunities to apply the clinical theory, practice and associated research in the provision of dental implantology within the primary care setting. This course focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

INDUSTRY LINKS

Completion of this programme of study provides 60 allowable credits towards the FGDP (UK) Career Pathway (Clinical); 30 allowable credits towards the Career Pathway (Other).

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme encompasses a blended learning approach and consists of a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, clinic training sessions and laboratory visits. Each person will be assigned a personal tutor for the entire programme.

Each module of your course will have a series of assessments and examinations - these are designed to develop and test your core knowledge and skills at regular intervals throughout the programme. Assessments focus on your higher levels skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments would include analysis of given clinical cases OSCEs and essays.

FURTHER INFORMATION

During the course (two years PgDip; three years MSc) you will be expected to attend up to 20 study / assessment days per year. Many of these sessions will be within the School of Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in the adjacent UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will observe, assist and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise lectures, presentations and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within the UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though lectures, presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 10 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.

This programme is intended for dental practitioners wishing to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical clinical experience in the treatment planning, surgical placement, restoration and maintenance of dental implants. The programme has been designed to allow you to gain experience of the use of dental implants in prosthodontic treatment within a supervised environment. Knowledge is developed using distance learning modules and study days. You will also have the opportunity to carry out a research project or literature review and prepare a dissertation.

We aim to produce caring, knowledgeable and skilful practitioners, who are competent in the provision of the surgical and restorative dental aspects of dental implant treatment, within the limits of the individual clinician.

Programme structure

This modular programme is divided in to three sections - certificate, diploma and MSc levels. All students are admitted to the MSc in the first instance and can choose to exit the programme at certificate or diploma level.

Year One
Five theoretical and practical modules are delivered over a minimum of six study days during the year, as well as through distance-learning material and self-directed study. You will also attend clinical practice placements at the Bristol Dental Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Dental Implant Clinic in Bath. During the clinical practice placements you will diagnose, plan treatment and carry out implant placement under supervision in pre-selected patients who are provided for you. After completing year one, candidates can exit the programme at certificate level or carry on to year two.

Year Two
A further five modules are delivered over a minimum of six study days, through distance-learning material, self-directed work and work-based study. In addition, you will again attend clinical practice placements. After successfully completing years one and two, candidates may exit the programme with a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology.

Year Three
After a further year, an MSc will be awarded on the successful completion of a dissertation.

This distinctive programme is the result of a joint partnership between Edge Hill University and Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE Ltd). It will train you in the practical application of dental implantology in the clinic, combining theoretical knowledge with the requirement to successfully complete a range of cases at a clinical hub, supported by a team of experienced dentists and a clinical mentor.

You will be introduced to new technologies such as minimally invasive computer guided surgery and explore CAD-CAM restorative treatment techniques, infection control, medico-legal and ethical considerations, and human factors. There is a focus on teamwork, collaboration and reflection with the overall aim of nurturing an evidence-based approach to practice and enhancing the quality of patient care.

Upon successful completion of the programme you will have developed the core clinical skills and competency in the restorative and surgical aspects of implant dentistry, as well as acquiring essential skills in critical analysis and research.

What will I study?

The overarching aim of the modules is to equip you with an advanced knowledge base and core clinical skills in all aspects of implant dentistry.

You will examine the reasons and consequences associated with tooth loss, with a focus on prevention, and immerse yourself in the application of advanced skills in the assessment, diagnosis and planning of surgical implant treatment.

You will be introduced to research methodology and research skills, undertake a critical appraisal of relevant literature, adopt an evidence-based approach to clinical decision making, and conduct a significant piece of investigative enquiry through the completion of a dissertation.

How will I study?

Taught sessions are typically run in block study days on a part-time basis so that attendance can be incorporated with clinical work.

Teaching methods include lectures by consultant dentists, specialists and expert clinicians in implant dentistry, alongside group work, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), seminar presentations and interactive sessions. There will be strong emphasis on literature analysis and critique as well as development of case presentation skills.

The delivery of the module introducing you to the research process will be more blended and there will be academic and clinical supervision to support you in completing your dissertation.

Several modules contain practice competencies that need to be met so a significant amount of time for learning is allocated to work in practice with support provided by a clinical mentor.

In addition to this, there will be set days of attendance within the clinical hub at ICE Ltd, with the possibility of attending additional optional sessions there if desired.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed both formatively and summatively using a combination of theoretical and practical methods. These will enable you to demonstrate successful acquisition of the necessary academic knowledge and clinical competencies in implant dentistry.

Assessment methods will include essay writing, critical appraisal of research papers, preparing research proposals, delivering case presentations or treatment plans, and conducting practice-based pilot studies or a cycle of clinical audits.

Clinical portfolios will be assessed to allow you to demonstrate your engagement with the evidence-base that supports practice and the application of best practice guidance to your clinical work.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a combination of academic experts from Edge Hill University who are opinion leaders in implant dentistry and a team of dentists from ICE Ltd who work in community and hospital settings, all with extensive experience of teaching and supporting dentists in oral surgery and implantology.

There are three strands to the programme: the scientific basis of endodontology; diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced endodontic problems, clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems (these two run throughout the programme), learning research methodology to enable completion of a research project. Subjects include the pathology of apical periodontitis and strategies to manage it effectively.

The programme offers a dynamic interaction with other graduate students specialising in prosthodontics, implantology and periodontology, the development of skills in understanding and analysing the research base for clinical care. There is the opportunity for UK specialist training and to sit a final conjoint membership examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. All programmes are based on the speciality of oral surgery but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. The three-year programme provides specialist oral surgery clinical training.

Students undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. They also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery. Students attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component consists of the following modules:
- Surgical Basic Sciences (Basic surgical science, preoperative and postoperative care) and Patient Care (Assessing patients, medical aspects of patient care and control of pain and anxiety)
- Reflective Oral Surgery Practices

This programme is designed for dentists who wish to advance their knowledge of this clinical specialty at a postgraduate level. There are three components: Research Methods and Biostatistics; Specialist Clinical Component; and a Research Component.

The aim of the Research Methods and Biostatistics components is to enable students to become competent in the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects.

The aim of the Specialist Clinical Component is to give students an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. The evidence base supporting clinical surgical practice is emphasised.

The Specialist Clinical Component permits observation of a wide range of surgery including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participation in dentoalveolar surgery.

The aim of the Research Component is to offer research training in identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project. The research project is in line with the research themes of control of pain and anxiety or surgical implantology or oral cancer and health services research.
