About the programme

The Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Photonics is an international English-taught course programme with a duration of 2 years set up in the context of the Erasmus Mundus programme of the European Union since 2006. This master programme is offered by three leading European universities in the field of photonics: Ghent University (acting as coordinator), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and St-Andrews University (UK). Furthermore the consortium has added Associated Academic Partners (NTU - National Taiwan University, Taiwan, EPFL - Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Denmark - Royal Institute of Technology - KTH, Stockholm (Sweden) and UPV - Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain) to the programme to offer all students a thesis in their field of specialization.

Core and advanced photonics courses

Two universities in Belgium (Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Universiteit Gent, programme coordinator), two in Scotland (St.-Andrews University and Heriot-Watt University) and one in Sweden (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, Stockholm) have jointly organised the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Photonics since September 2006.

This Master offers:

- A specialization in photonic materials, components and systems. Lasers and LED's, optical fibres and liquid crystals, optical sensors and detectors will reveal all their secrets to you.
- A wide variety of elective courses in ICT, electronics, business aspects of photonics, multimedia etc.
- An industrial internship which will give you the opportunity to get in touch with the Photonics Industry
- A multi-disciplinary training in Photonics and Photonics-related subjects, organized
by four European universities that are all at the top of the innovative world of Photonics
- The opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills in other domains, such as ICT, biosciences, physics and chemistry of materials, industrial management etc.

Approach

Core and advanced photonics courses:
The first year will be devoted mainly to a programme of core photonics courses with essentially the same content at all institutes, complemented by a number of advanced photonics courses as well as several courses in related disciplines and transferable skill courses.

Move to another location:
In the second year you will move to another location where you will continue to take advanced photonics, multidisciplinary and transferable skill courses and where you will carry out your master thesis (30 ECTS) in a photonics sub-field of their choice. In addition to the regular courses, all students will attend a two-week summer school at the end of the first and second year of the programme.

International opportunities

This Master's programme offers both EU and non-EU students the opportunity to enroll in an international programme and to spend a year in two of the three countries mentioned above. It’s a multi- disciplinary programme covering electrical engineering, basic physics, material technologies, electronics and applications in different fields.

Contact with different European cultures and languages:
In addition, they will be brought into contact with several European cultures and languages and will get the chance to live in different European capitals (Brussels and Stockholm) and/or European cities (Gent, Edinburgh and Saint Andrews), cities with a rich cultural heritage.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES

The programme is divided into four semesters. The two first semesters are each divided into two blocks.

The first semester creates the necessary foundation both methodologically and theoretically for further studies of finance and international business.

Applied Econometric Methods introduces you to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics. The course has two major aims. Firstly, it provides you with tools which enable you to acquire the knowledge published in high quality publications within the areas of empirical finance and economics. Secondly, it equips you with tools for modelling and estimating econometric systems. The methods involved have been chosen with a view towards applications within empirical finance and economics.

Corporate Finance deals with the financial problems of a company and various solution models will be introduced. Further issues are the interactions between the company and the financial markets, with special emphasis on valuation of the company in a capital market perspective.

International Business Methods covers macro level (regional economic integration, e.g. the EU, trade barriers, etc.), company level (internationalisation and export market strategies, management of subsidiary companies, etc.) and individual level interaction between people of different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Internationalisation of the Firm provides you with an in-depth and detailed understanding of theories surrounding the internationalisation of businesses and the practical implications of these theories.


SPECIALISATION COURSES

The second semester is devoted to more advanced studies within the two areas.

International Financial Accounting focuses on the financial reporting requirements in international environments. An understanding of international business depends on a theoretically grounded, pragmatic knowledge of the international requirements for corporations to report their financial performance and financial position.

Strategy and Management Accounting
In this course different elements of strategy formulation and strategic management accounting will be discussed and analysed. An important element involves the provision of information for the formulation of an organisations' strategy and managing strategy implementation and its importance for management accounting.

Advanced Corporate Finance studies corporate finance under asymmetric information and agency problems. Traditional agency theory and asymmetric information are used to revisit capital structure, dividend and capital budgeting policies. Focus is also on the role of governance systems under different ownership structures.

International Business Finance
The multinational firm is confronted with the task of operating internationally. This necessitates an understanding of the markets for products, factors of production, and financial assets. Operating internationally poses unique risks – one of these being the existence of fluctuating exchange rates. More generally, the global integration of money and capital markets implies opportunities as wells as challenges – both of which have to be considered by the multinational firm.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and in this way get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. PREREQUISITE COURSES

Introductory Methods in Economic Consulting
This course introduces widely applicable quantitative methods with a special focus on their relevance for policy analysis. The main aim of the course is to introduce and apply relatively simple methods and models that can be used for econometric analysis of empirical questions that inevitably arise when project evaluations are performed.

Advanced Methods in Economic Consulting
A rigorous evaluation of public programs and policies often requires sophisticated quantitative methods to obtain reliable estimates of the effects of the programs. Furthermore, the analysis and assessment of the economic consequences also involves estimation of the costs and benefits. Hence, a thorough knowledge of advanced applied econometric methods is necessary to solve many of the complicated economic consulting problems.

Advanced Industrial Economics
This course is concerned with the theoretical and empirical understanding of the intensity of competition across industries and its effect on prices, quantities, quality choice, efficiency and market structure. It also studies the need of public intervention by describing the economics of competition policy.

Organisational Economics and Strategy
This course studies how firms create a competitive advantage and maintain it, and analyses strategic choices regarding the boundaries of the firm, the incentive mechanisms and the organisational structure that will best serve their strategies.

Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) or Project Evaluation as it is sometimes referred to, is an essential tool in economic consulting. The purpose of CBA is to facilitate better decision-making. It ensures that resources are effectively allocated by estimating the monetary values - as far as this is possible - of all the benefits and costs to society of alternative projects, typically public investment projects. Cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness are also central elements within the context of budgetary and political considerations as parts of social evaluation of investments.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

International Economic Integration gives a broad understanding of the forces and effects of globalisation through technological and policy changes. Based on the theory of international economics we examine integration as driven by organisations like e.g. the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the EU. The ability to put institutional knowledge into operation in an economic analytical context is a key element in working with government agencies, international institutions and many non-profit organisations on issues such as changes in trade rules or EU policies.

Developing and Emerging Economies
The growing wealth of the world is distributed unevenly. This is a central challenge for policy makers and a field of growing demand for informed economic advice. The course will focus on the opportunities and conditions for economic growth in developing and emerging economies and provide you with an understanding of the underlying economic mechanisms.

Applied Economic Consulting
Would it be a good idea to attract the Olympics to Denmark? These and many other questions come down to economics. What is the total impact, what are the involved costs and benefits, how do you forecast primary and secondary effects? This course simulates the entire process surrounding a real-world economic consulting problem, including an introduction to various project management tools.

This unique multi-disciplinary course is taught by architects, engineers and physicists involved in practice and research. It focuses on the theory and practice of developing low carbon and sustainable buildings.

The course includes a number of interlinked modules that simulate the design and development of a sustainable project. This enables students from different disciplines to develop skills and understanding relevant to their own discipline, be it design or consultancy, and in relation to a national and international context.

The course is run by the School of Architecture, which is recognised as one of the country's leading schools of architecture and is consistently ranked by The Architect's Journals one of the five best schools in the UK. You will gain an advanced understanding of the key sustainability issues related to buildings enabling them to strategically influence feasibility and design processes within the built environment. This course in detail

The course is organised on a modular credit system, 60 credits for postgraduate certificate, 120 credits for the postgraduate diploma (9 months full-time, 20 months part-time) and 180 credits for the master's degree (12 months full-time, 24 months part-time).

Modules combine a ratio of taught to self-led study. For example, a module of 20 credits approximates to 200 hours of student effort, up to 36 hours of which will normally be devoted to lectures, seminars, individual tutorials or other staff contact. The remainder of the time is devoted to student-led study and assessment.

Graduates will possess an advanced understanding of the key sustainability issues related to buildings enabling them to strategically influence feasibility and design processes within the built environment. Module Details

The design curriculum is delivered through studios, each having a distinct research topic relating to the research and practice of the studio tutors. The studio topics and pedagogy provide a framework and guidance for student projects in Year One and support in Year Two as you develop your particular thesis questions into design propositions. Studios topics change annually in response to current issues in practice and society, challenging the architectural profession, and offering variety in scale,content and context in the UK and abroad.

MArch Studios 2016-17*

Latent Culture- Exploring the Reading, Mapping and Making of Place: Mapping, reading and drawing out, Studio 1 will explore cartography, archaeology, memory, narrative and material of place. Through a series of thematic studies – text and making based – the studio will bring together an understanding of place using artefacts, films, maps and narratives.

Littoral Landscapes: Change Labs for Coastal Experimentation: This studio will experiment with the ‘seeds’ of transformation, focussing on littoral landscapes – coastal villages, towns and cities in the UK and abroad. The studio is the Lab, the seeds are about speculation, growth, invention and entrepreneurialism - small changes which can lead to revolutions.

Urban Futures. Cities constantly change in response to changes in society: Today, major environmental and economic challenges we are facing require new models for the built environment that are capable to be resource efficient, adaptable to environmental modifications and designed to facilitate placemaking.

The Emergent Studio: Architecture of, on and around the Edge: The Emergent Studio explores the idea of making architecture within cultural contexts that are not ‘our own’; always in a location that in some way exemplifies an edge condition. Our theoretical platform for exploring these conditions has been, and continues to be, rooted within phenomenology, drawing from the writings of the humane Nordic modernist tradition, in informing our methodologies of interrogation and design.

Portsmouth: The Anatomy of "The Island City”: This studio continues our reflections on Portsmouth's response to climate change induced rise in sea levels adding an analysis of infrastructures and their impact on developing Urban & Architectural visions for the city.

Tactical Urbanism: Tactical Urbanism will investigate, in a radical and provocative way, how a university environment will change in the future and create alternative and hypothetical social scenarios as starting point for your design project. The aim is not to create a futuristic environment but to challenge the current paradigms and try to address the real problems and issues that our society will face in a near 2050 future.

Coastal Latent Dynamics: Material Voids: This new studio will frame the architectural process, starting with a close up of the Micro (the detail, the material qualities of place, prototyping), continuing to a wide shot of the Macro (the notion of municipality in a coastal context) and then zooming into the Meso (dealing with the opportunities of voids, empty buildings and their environs).

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of individual and group tutorials in your selected studio, while year-wide units are lecture-based, complemented by seminars and workshops. Our studio-teaching method will mean that you will be working with tutors with professional and academic experience in their field and all unit programmes are complemented by contributions from external professionals.

Studio programmes will often entail shared sessions with European and, sometimes, other overseas institutions, in countries such as Denmark, Turkey, Morocco, Italy and Spain. Representatives of local public and private bodies and agencies frequently contribute to studio tutorials and crits. All this helps to ensure that your learning and studio research outputs can have regional impact and global reach.

Design assessment is through studio review (crit) as work progresses and portfolio assessment at the end of the academic year. ‘Taught’ units, in support of the design curriculum, are assessed through various forms of illustrated written coursework – both individual and group, such as reports and the Dissertation.

You’ll study

The programme is divided into four semesters over two years.

You’ll spend your first year at Strathclyde. You’ll gain practical experience of working within globally distributed teams and with an industrial client.

In the first semester of Year 2, you’ll either undertake in-depth study of innovation management in Germany or an industrial internship in Denmark.

MA Exhibition Studies is a unique programme dedicated to the understanding of, and imaginative engagement with, the history, theory and practice of worldwide exhibition cultures. It explores a dynamic field of creative practice which crosses disciplinary boundaries and explores shifting ideas about art intersecting with larger curatorial trends and ideas, in a global context.

The programme is underpinned by the work of the Exhibition Research Lab. It draws upon the internationally distinguished expertise of staff and visiting staff engaged in theoretical and applied research in the field of exhibitions studies and curating, in collaboration with key cultural local and international institutions.
Operating in close partnership with Tate Liverpool, Liverpool Biennial, FACT (Foundation for Creative Art and Technology) and RIBA North (Royal Institute of British Architects), we can offer our students opportunities to develop public presentations, curatorial projects, and exhibitions in real-life contexts.

In addition, the programme benefits from the context of our own Exhibition Research Lab Gallery located at the School Art and Design John Lennon Building; LJMU Library, Special Collections and Archives (including Liverpool Biennial Archives) as well as a range of international collaborations and partnerships developed by staff, such as a partnership with the MA Curating programme at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Teaching on the programme is delivered within the studio environment, with a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, study visits and field trips.

You will be introduced to the professional practice of exhibition making during this module. It provides an opportunity to share, investigate and contextualise experiences of exhibition making. Research and Practice 1

This shared module for all Liverpool School of Art and Design taught postgraduate programmes provides an introduction to practice-based research, history and theory as applied to the wider field of Art and Design. It will introduce you to a variety of research methods and skills and offers an exploration of the diversity of contemporary practice at the forefront of the represented disciplines

Research and Practice 2

You will be introduced to the field of Exhibition Studies through the study of significant historic exhibitions with key contextual readings. You will be introduced to various case study examples to test and develop ideas for the written assignment through analysis, discussion and reflection. The module introduces the histories and practices of exhibition-making and develops your interpretative theoretical and discursive skills. It offers a critical environment within which you can develop the skills necessary to debate and critically evaluate exhibition studies


Collaborative Practice

An exciting shared module for all Liverpool School of Art and Design taught postgraduate programmes which will provide you with an opportunity to work closely with departments and internal partners within the School and the wider LJMU community, and with external partners in the UK and internationally. Outcomes should include proposals for applied creative projects and demonstrable practice based artefacts relevant for exhibition purposes. An emphasis will be placed on you furthering the understanding of your chosen pathways within the programme and developing professional links and experience in disseminating work to the public/professional bodies

Major Project – Exhibition Studies

You will undertake and complete a sustained research project in the field of Exhibition Studies on a topic agreed with the module supervisor. Building on advanced skills in practice, research and scholarship assessed at Certificate and Diploma modules, you will identify, research, and organise a significant piece of scholarly writing or undertake a practical project. Both options are undertaken with the support and advice provided through general, small-group, and tutorial meetings. The module is assessed through a written dissertation or practical project (thesis exhibition) accompanied by a written report.

The Master of Science program in Geoinformatics at Aalborg University, Copenhagen is directed at students with a bachelor’s degree in surveying, land management, urban planning, environmental planning, geography or study programs with similar contents interested in understanding the concepts and obtaining the necessary skills to manage various kinds of digital geographic information. Basic knowledge about geographic information and information technology is required for enrolment but we will take you further and disseminate spatial information to build computer based representations of the real world leading to development of technologies and methods for planners and resource managers.

Thus our goal is to introduce graduate students to the potentials of modern geographic information technology to strengthen their professional approach to solving real world problems in their specific field of interest. Based on traditional problem based learning methods, the students will be introduced to geoinformatics by participating in project works (50%) and course works (50%). Approximately half of the courses will be examined individually with a dedicated curriculum. The rest are given as a supplement to the project oriented work being evaluated through the project.

The course will cover major research tools including research design, experiments,response models and forecasting.

IS Development & Implementation in a Business Context introduces a range of methods and techniques that can be used to understand, plan and execute the processes in which information systems are developed, implemented, evaluated and modified to enable the student to participate in the development, acquisition and implementation of information systems.

Data Warehousing provides the student with knowledge about the wide variety of database management systems available for a data warehouse solution and how to choose a solution that is relevant for the business intelligence project in question.

SAS and SQL for Business Analytics provides the student with skills to conduct proper data analysis using some of the most flexible environments available. Focus will be on data management and data manipulation with the purpose to prepare for a statistical analysis.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

In the second semester you follow the specialisation courses of the programme.

Data Mining for Business Decisions teaches students how to work with large datasets and how relationships in such data can be detected with the purpose to transform data into knowledge. Business applications cover a broad range from marketing to accounting, logistics and supply chain management.

In Advanced Market Research the focus is on analytical customer relationship management. The course is devoted to customer base analysis and predictive modelling with a primary focus on customer lifetime value and customer retention.

Supply Chain Management aims to provide an introduction and a framework of the design and operations of performance management in contemporary supply chains.

Project Management aims to introduce the contents of general project management competences and provide the students with skills to manage a BI project.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at the school during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES

In the first term you follow three prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme.

In Corporate Finance I the general aim of the course to provide the participants with profound knowledge about financial decision making in corporations. It is important to underline that although the course is focused on the managerial problems, decisions must be based on a solid theoretical framework.

In Corporate Finance II the aim of the course to extend the knowledge about financial decision making in corporations provided by the preceding course, Corporate Finance I, with a special focus on real options and risk management.

In Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis the course focuses on theories and empirical methods for analysing equity markets.

In Fixed Income Securities the course focuses on theories and methods for analysing fixed income markets.

In Applied Econometric Methods I the purpose of the course is to introduce the students to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics.

In Applied Econometric Methods II the course extends the time series analysis from Applied Econometrics Methods I with special emphasis on relevant financial models and applications. For forecast purposes, models of financial time series and econometrics will obviously be of major relevance.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Bank Management focuses on the financial system and the role of banks in the capital market. Also the financial regulation of markets and institutions is integrated into the course. The main aim of the course is to provide students with insight into the management tasks that banks and mortgage credit institutions face.

Securities Market covers the parts of the financial curriculum that are related to trading in markets for financial instruments. As such it complements the standard courses in asset pricing, corporate finance, bank management and financial institutions with issues from the field of market microstructure.

Financial Engineering
Financial derivatives such as forward, futures, swaps, and options are increasingly important instruments applied by agents of financial markets. The course focuses on describing and understanding these instruments, and on the underlying markets such as money markets, bond markets, stock, currency, and commodity markets.

Empirical Finance
Financial economics is nowadays quite often based on empirical investigation. This course provides you with many different methods to analyse financial data. Among the many models are event studies, models to analyse the term structure of interest rates as well as ARCH and GARCH models.

Management Research Method
The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner. You learn how to formulate research questions and to identify an appropriate research plan and methodology for the given set of research questions. This includes methodologies how to define unit of analysis and sample as well as methodologies how to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Entrepreneurship: Shaping Entrepreneurial Thinking
This course will enable you to develop entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour and to start your own firm based on your business ideas. Students develop and evaluate business ideas and learn how to develop a compelling business case based on entrepreneurial market research. The course furthermore includes the decision on the appropriate legal form for their new venture and new venture financing.

Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The course enables students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Together these competencies provide students with the ability to critically evaluate and choose relevant literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

New Product Development Clinic
The learning objective is to enable you to understand and execute the crucial tasks in the new product development process from idea generation to commercialisation. The course takes a concrete development problem as point of departure. Students will generate ideas for the solution of this problem and then carry out concept testing, prototype development, market assessment and pre-launch activities. Therefore, you will experience all the challenges in the new product development process hands-on. The course will be co-taught with faculty from Aarhus BSS and Aarhus School of Engineering. The teaching method of the course is project-based.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Appropriating innovation – Managing Intellectual property rights
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of how intellectual property rights, particularly patents, can be used as tools for technology development. A short introduction to the history and theory of patents is followed by an examination of the use of patents as tools of technology development. The course will also consider the evidence in support of the theory that patents on significant inventions are used to control and block 'downstream' innovation. Furthermore, the course will consider the 'anti-trust'- patent so-called 'interface' and recent changes to policy in favour of patents in the US.

Organising for Innovation
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of the firm-internal perspective and context on innovation. This includes the formulation of and decision for innovation strategies, organisational structures and designs for innovation, creativity and performance within innovation teams, cooperation between R&D and marketing in the new product development process, champions and promotors of innovation, the management of radical innovation and the measurement of innovation performance.

Open and User-Driven Innovation
Shorter product life cycles and increased technological complexity of new products and services force firms to increasingly open their innovation processes to external sources of innovation. The learning objective of this course is therefore to enable you to understand which relevant sources of innovation exist outside the firm and how a firm can systematically use these external sources as leverage for new product development and for enhancing the innovative capability of a firm. The course includes emerging forms of open and distributed innovation. Specific focus will be given to user-driven innovation, including market orientation in the new product development process, lead user innovation, user communities and user toolkits.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
