PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programme is divided into four semesters and has a duration of 2 years.

Here is an overview of the 4 semesters:

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

The first semester creates the necessary foundation both methodologically and theoretically for further studies of finance and international business.

Courses:

Applied Econometric Methods introduces you to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics. The course has two major aims. Firstly, it provides you with tools which enable you to acquire the knowledge published in high quality publications within the areas of empirical finance and economics. Secondly, it equips you with tools for modelling and estimating econometric systems. The methods involved have been chosen with a view towards applications within empirical finance and economics.

Corporate Finance deals with the financial problems of a company and various solution models will be introduced. Further issues are the interactions between the company and the financial markets, with special emphasis on valuation of the company in a capital market perspective.

International Business Methods covers macro level (regional economic integration, e.g. the EU, trade barriers, etc.), company level (internationalisation and export market strategies, management of subsidiary companies, etc.) and individual level interaction between people of different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Internationalisation of the Firm provides you with an in-depth and detailed understanding of theories surrounding the internationalisation of businesses and the practical implications of these theories.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester is devoted to more advanced studies within the two areas.

Courses:

International Financial Accounting focuses on the financial reporting requirements in international environments. An understanding of international business depends on a theoretically grounded, pragmatic knowledge of the international requirements for corporations to report their financial performance and financial position.

Strategy and Management Accounting is a course with different elements of strategy formulation and strategic management accounting will be discussed and analysed. An important element involves the provision of information for the formulation of an organisations' strategy and managing strategy implementation and its importance for management accounting.

Advanced Corporate Finance studies corporate finance under asymmetric information and agency problems. Traditional agency theory and asymmetric information are used to revisit capital structure, dividend and capital budgeting policies. Focus is also on the role of governance systems under different ownership structures.

International Business Finance will introduce you to the multinational firm is confronted with the task of operating internationally. This necessitates an understanding of the markets for products, factors of production, and financial assets. Operating internationally poses unique risks – one of these being the existence of fluctuating exchange rates. More generally, the global integration of money and capital markets implies opportunities as wells as challenges – both of which have to be considered by the multinational firm.

3rd semester: Electives

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester:

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and in this way get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

The MSc in Economics and Business Administration – Strategic Communication focuses on the strategic, organisational and managerial opportunities and challenges related to companies’ communication with its various stakeholders. This specialisation qualifies the students to master the complex processes and practices of strategic communication specifically within the areas of brand and social media management and innovation, integrated marketing and organisational communication. 

Strategic discipline

The specialisation in Strategic Communication prepares the students for setting strategic goals that aim to create value for employees, markets, organisations and society; to assess how different social, cultural and economic contexts and stakeholders affect strategy selection and execution; and to master the complex processes of strategic communication, including the design, execution and management of brand and communication strategies and activities.

Close collaboration with businesses

Teaching activities therefore include hands-on work with real cases and guest lectures. Students are also encouraged to include an internship in a company (in Denmark or abroad) in the third semester of the programme.

Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

Students will follow three prerequisite courses in the first semester of the programme, focusing on advanced knowledge of organisational and brand management theories, which is crucial for the analysis, understanding, critical assessment and solving of communication problems.

Advanced knowledge on analysing and understanding organisations and organisational practices will be gained in the course Organisational Theory. Various analytical frameworks will be presented, with which the students will learn how to understand and navigate organisations.

The topic of brand management will be focused on in the course Brand Management Theory .This area will be looked upon with differen approaches including: different communicative asumptions, philosophic underpinning and methodological preferences.

The course Management Research Methods provides the students with advanced insights into scientific research designs, processes and standards with a particular emphasis on the specific research methods and methodologies relevant for studying strategic communication in and from organisations.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester consists of three courses which will cover the key disciplines within strategic communication, which in combination provide the students with thorough insights into the various processes and practices of internal, external and integrated strategic communication:

Students will gain skills in analysing, identifying and solving communication problems related to managerial and organisational challenges as well as in managing communication at individual, group, organisational and societal level in the course Organisational Communication.

The course Integrated Marketing Communication will give the students advanced insights into marketing communication management, including understandings of the actual processes and models for analysing the economic, social and cultural contexts, setting goals and objectives, developing marketing communication strategies and outlining their creative execution. Additionally, topics of various organisational and managerial challenges and opportunities in working with the integration of communication and communication processes at different levels will be covered.

Lasty, the second semester contains the course Social Media Management. The goal of this course is to enhance our understanding of how new digital and social technologies impact and enable communication, collaboration and innovation in the contemporary business environment. It provides the students with skills for analysing, designing, implementing and evaluating effective social media management and communication practices in view of the overall corporate setting and communication strategy. 

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. This unique multi-disciplinary course is taught by architects, engineers and physicists involved in practice and research. It focuses on the theory and practice of developing low carbon and sustainable buildings.

The course includes a number of interlinked modules that simulate the design and development of a sustainable project. This enables students from different disciplines to develop skills and understanding relevant to their own discipline, be it design or consultancy, and in relation to a national and international context.

Why choose this course?

The course is run by the School of Architecture, which is recognised as one of the country's leading schools of architecture and is consistently ranked by The Architect's Journals one of the five best schools in the UK. You will gain an advanced understanding of the key sustainability issues related to buildings enabling them to strategically influence feasibility and design processes within the built environment. The course attracts some of the best students in the field from a diverse range of ages, backgrounds, gender and nationalities. The range of subjects draws on the research strengths of the teaching staff and enables research to inform the teaching modules. This course in detail

The course is organised on a modular credit system, 60 credits for postgraduate certificate, 120 credits for the postgraduate diploma (9 months full-time, 20 months part-time) and 180 credits for the master's degree (12 months full-time, 24 months part-time).

Modules combine a ratio of taught to self-led study. For example, a module of 20 credits approximates to 200 hours of student effort, up to 36 hours of which will normally be devoted to lectures, seminars, individual tutorials or other staff contact. The remainder of the time is devoted to student-led study and assessment.

Graduates will possess an advanced understanding of the key sustainability issues related to buildings enabling them to strategically influence feasibility and design processes within the built environment. They will be familiar with a range of models, tools and methods with which to quantify, predict, evaluate and manage building performance, and will be able to use them and switch to other tools based on an understanding from first principles.

Drawing on a working knowledge of how to minimise energy, carbon emissions and resource consumption in buildings through the various stages of their life cycles, they will be able to take account of changing, incomplete and uncertain information related to the environment. They will also have well developed skills in auditing, analysis, reporting and presentation and a thorough understanding of the interdisciplinary subject area.

Through the design studios you will be exposed to a range of related architectural interests, including urbanism, landscape, practice, sustainability and culture, providing a cross-disciplinary learning environment that is appropriate in today’s professionally complex architectural world. We can also provide all incoming, full-time MArch students with funding toward a Course field trip.

It is structured to ensure the integration and synthesis of contextual, technical and professional complexities inherent within the design process, helping you to engage with the prescribed ARB/RIBA criteria, and attain RIBA Part 2 exemption.

Module Details

The design curriculum is delivered through studios, each having a distinct research topic relating to the research and practice of the studio tutors. The studio topics and pedagogy provide a framework and guidance for student projects in Year One and support in Year Two as you develop your particular thesis questions into design propositions. Studios topics change annually in response to current issues in practice and society, challenging the architectural profession, and offering variety in scale,content and context in the UK and abroad.

MArch Studios 2016-17*

Latent Culture- Exploring the Reading, Mapping and Making of Place: Mapping, reading and drawing out, Studio 1 will explore cartography, archaeology, memory, narrative and material of place. Through a series of thematic studies – text and making based – the studio will bring together an understanding of place using artefacts, films, maps and narratives.

Littoral Landscapes: Change Labs for Coastal Experimentation: This studio will experiment with the ‘seeds’ of transformation, focussing on littoral landscapes – coastal villages, towns and cities in the UK and abroad. The studio is the Lab, the seeds are about speculation, growth, invention and entrepreneurialism - small changes which can lead to revolutions.

Urban Futures. Cities constantly change in response to changes in society: Today, major environmental and economic challenges we are facing require new models for the built environment that are capable to be resource efficient, adaptable to environmental modifications and designed to facilitate placemaking.

The Emergent Studio: Architecture of, on and around the Edge: The Emergent Studio explores the idea of making architecture within cultural contexts that are not ‘our own’; always in a location that in some way exemplifies an edge condition. Our theoretical platform for exploring these conditions has been, and continues to be, rooted within phenomenology, drawing from the writings of the humane Nordic modernist tradition, in informing our methodologies of interrogation and design.

Portsmouth: The Anatomy of "The Island City”: This studio continues our reflections on Portsmouth's response to climate change induced rise in sea levels adding an analysis of infrastructures and their impact on developing Urban & Architectural visions for the city.

Tactical Urbanism: Tactical Urbanism will investigate, in a radical and provocative way, how a university environment will change in the future and create alternative and hypothetical social scenarios as starting point for your design project. The aim is not to create a futuristic environment but to challenge the current paradigms and try to address the real problems and issues that our society will face in a near 2050 future.

Coastal Latent Dynamics: Material Voids: This new studio will frame the architectural process, starting with a close up of the Micro (the detail, the material qualities of place, prototyping), continuing to a wide shot of the Macro (the notion of municipality in a coastal context) and then zooming into the Meso (dealing with the opportunities of voids, empty buildings and their environs).

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of individual and group tutorials in your selected studio, while year-wide units are lecture-based, complemented by seminars and workshops. Our studio-teaching method will mean that you will be working with tutors with professional and academic experience in their field and all unit programmes are complemented by contributions from external professionals.

Studio programmes will often entail shared sessions with European and, sometimes, other overseas institutions, in countries such as Denmark, Turkey, Morocco, Italy and Spain. Representatives of local public and private bodies and agencies frequently contribute to studio tutorials and crits. All this helps to ensure that your learning and studio research outputs can have regional impact and global reach.

Design assessment is through studio review (crit) as work progresses and portfolio assessment at the end of the academic year. ‘Taught’ units, in support of the design curriculum, are assessed through various forms of illustrated written coursework – both individual and group, such as reports and the Dissertation.

Description

The Clinical Nursing MSc course is a flexible study pathway that builds on your existing clinical experience and skills, enabling you to lead and support the development and subsequent delivery of evidence-based practice.

Initially, you will undertake modules in Measurement and Evaluation for Healthcare Practice, Evidence-based Decision Making in Healthcare, as well as modules covering Advanced Assessment Skills for Non-medical Prescribers and Developing Professional Leadership. You will then have the freedom to choose from a range of additional optional modules to reflect your choice of research pathway. You will complete the course in one year, studying September to September, taking modules totalling 180 credits, with 60 credits coming from a dissertation of around 15,000 words. The programme also includes a 10-day period of specially arranged clinical observation in the UK.

The programme also includes 10 days of supervised practice, personalised to the student’s needs. The placement takes place within one of the university’s partner healthcare organisations and will focus on developing competences appropriate to the particular clinical setting. 

Teaching

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and self study.

Contact time is based on 24 academic weeks, whereas self-study time is based on 31 academic weeks. Typically, one credit equates to ten hours of work.  

Location

The degree programme is delivered across the four King’s College London campuses. This includes three Thames-side campuses (Waterloo, St Thomas’ and Guy’s) and the Denmark Hill Campus in South London. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary depending on the optional modules you select.

Course purpose

The aim of this programme is to enable students who are qualified healthcare practitioners to acquire advanced understanding, knowledge and skills to deliver, manage, develop and research healthcare practice and education in a setting outside the UK.

Course format and assessment

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations. This can include written assignments such as essays, portfolios and dissertations. This program will allow students to acquire a thorough knowledge of the conceptual and empirical tools of modern Economics applied to international trade, finance, and development.

Tailor your program to fit your interests and goals

The program starts in the first term with a set of courses on economic growth and development, international trade and finance, and quantitative methods. In the second and third terms, students can choose from a wide array of courses and tailor their learning experience to their interests. Some students chose to specialize in development, others in international trade and finance, while others opt instead for a more balanced approach that combines training in both areas.

Students complete an independent study project by the end of the academic year, allowing them to specialize in a policy topic of their choice. They also attend a series of policy lessons delivered by international experts.

Study with experts from academia and international organizations

The master's faculty consists of internationally renowned scholars who have previously held academic positions at MIT, NYU, Chicago, Berkeley, Stanford and Cambridge. Degree

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Master Degree in Specialized Economic Analysis awarded jointly with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The degree requires the successful completion of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of graduate courses (6 credits are equivalent to a 40 hour course), some compulsory and some elective. The students' final program must be discussed with and approved by the Master Director.

Research and Practice 1

This shared module for all Liverpool School of Art and Design taught postgraduate programmes provides an introduction to practice-based research, history and theory as applied to the wider field of Art and Design. It will introduce you to a variety of research methods and skills and offers an exploration of the diversity of contemporary practice at the forefront of the represented disciplines

Research and Practice 2

You will be introduced to the field of Exhibition Studies through the study of significant historic exhibitions with key contextual readings. You will be introduced to various case study examples to test and develop ideas for the written assignment through analysis, discussion and reflection. The module introduces the histories and practices of exhibition-making and develops your interpretative theoretical and discursive skills. It offers a critical environment within which you can develop the skills necessary to debate and critically evaluate exhibition studies

Collaborative Practice

An exciting shared module for all Liverpool School of Art and Design taught postgraduate programmes which will provide you with an opportunity to work closely with departments and internal partners within the School and the wider LJMU community, and with external partners in the UK and internationally. Outcomes should include proposals for applied creative projects and demonstrable practice based artefacts relevant for exhibition purposes. An emphasis will be placed on you furthering the understanding of your chosen pathways within the programme and developing professional links and experience in disseminating work to the public/professional bodies

Major Project – Exhibition Studies

You will undertake and complete a sustained research project in the field of Exhibition Studies on a topic agreed with the module supervisor. Building on advanced skills in practice, research and scholarship assessed at Certificate and Diploma modules, you will identify, research, and organise a significant piece of scholarly writing or undertake a practical project. Both options are undertaken with the support and advice provided through general, small-group, and tutorial meetings. The module is assessed through a written dissertation or practical project (thesis exhibition) accompanied by a written report.

The Clinical Research MRes study pathway offers unique opportunities for you to join experienced research teams and work on cutting-edge projects. You will gain an in-depth understanding of research methods, and of how fundamental academic studies and skills relate directly to key areas of the project.

This research programme offers you the flexibility to study either full or part-time and is made up of optional and required modules totalling 180 credits. If you are studying full-time, you will complete the course in one year, while the part-time study pathway will take two years to complete.

Initially, you will explore advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods that will provide you with superior knowledge and skills to conceptualise, design, conduct and critically appraise specialist health research. You will then choose a range of optional modules to reflect your academic interests before completing a dissertation in Clinical Research worth 90 credits. Your thesis will allow you to draw on your prior knowledge and research skills by planning and completing an empirical clinical research project under supervision.

If you are following the part-time study pathway, you will typically complete the qualitative and quantitative research methods and the optional modules in the first year and the dissertation in the second and final year.

Additional support is available to Practitioners with the appropriate innovation and critical-thinking skills to develop a future clinical academic career.

Implementation Science is the study of methods to promote the translation of research findings and evidence into healthcare policy and practice. 1st semester: Prerequisite courses

During your first semester you follow the prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme.

The course Business Analytics gives the student a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical investigations that can support decisions in the business intelligence area. Moreover, the course will cover major research tools including research design, experiments,response models and forecasting.

IS Development & Implementation in a Business Context introduces a range of methods and techniques that can be used to understand, plan and execute the processes in which information systems are developed, implemented, evaluated and modified to enable the student to participate in the development, acquisition and implementation of information systems.

Data Warehousing provides the student with knowledge about the wide variety of database management systems available for a data warehouse solution and how to choose a solution that is relevant for the business intelligence project in question.

SAS and SQL for Business Analytics provides the student with skills to conduct proper data analysis using some of the most flexible environments available. Focus will be on data management and data manipulation with the purpose to prepare for a statistical analysis.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

During the second semester you follow the specialisation courses of the programme.

Data Mining for Business Decisions teaches students how to work with large data-sets and how relationships in such data can be detected with the purpose to transform data into knowledge. Business applications cover a broad range from marketing to accounting, logistics and supply chain management.

In Advanced Market Research the focus is on analytical customer relationship management. The course is devoted to customer base analysis and predictive modelling with a primary focus on customer lifetime value and customer retention.

Supply Chain Management aims to provide an introduction and a framework of the design and operations of performance management in contemporary supply chains.

Project Management aims to introduce the contents of general project management competences and provide the students with skills to manage a BI project.

3rd semester: Electives at Aarhus BSS or abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at the school during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

The first semester you will follow three prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme. Below you will find some details about the courses.

In Corporate Finance I the general aim of the course to provide the participants with profound knowledge about financial decision making in corporations. It is important to underline that although the course is focused on the managerial problems, decisions must be based on a solid theoretical framework.

You will get more in-depth knowledge in the following course, Corporate Finance II, which aims to extend the knowledge about financial decision making in corporations provided by the preceding course, Corporate Finance I, with a special focus on real options and risk management.

Moreover you will be taught Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis, which focuses on theories and empirical methods for analysing equity markets.

Another course is Fixed Income Securities, which focuses on theories and methods for analysing fixed income markets.

Finally you will be introduced to Applied Econometric Methods I and Applied Econometric Methods II. The purpose of the fist of the two mentioned courses is to introduce the students to the most widely used quantitative and empirical methods in econometrics, including in particular financial econometrics. In Applied Econometric Methods II the course extends the time series analysis from Applied Econometrics Methods I with special emphasis on relevant financial models and applications. For forecast purposes, models of financial time series and econometrics will obviously be of major relevance.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

On the second semester the student will be provided with an insight to the different perspectives on finance in the different courses.

Among these are Bank Management focuses on the financial system and the role of banks in the capital market. Also the financial regulation of markets and institutions is integrated into the course. The main aim of the course is to provide students with insight into the management tasks that banks and mortgage credit institutions face.

Moreover, the students will be introduced to Securities Market covers the parts of the financial curriculum that are related to trading in markets for financial instruments. As such it complements the standard courses in asset pricing, corporate finance, bank management and financial institutions with issues from the field of market microstructure.

Another perspective is that of Financial Engineering. This course illuminates the financial derivatives such as forward, futures, swaps, and options are increasingly important instruments applied by agents of financial markets. The course focuses on describing and understanding these instruments, and on the underlying markets such as money markets, bond markets, stock, currency, and commodity markets.

During the 2nd semester the student will also get knowledge about Financial economics, which is nowadays quite often based on empirical investigation. This course provides you with many different methods to analyse financial data. Among the many models are event studies, models to analyse the term structure of interest rates as well as ARCH and GARCH models.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

Information Systems Research Methods - This course focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge, meeting the requirements of scientific quality criteria. This is essential for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background.

IS Development & Implementation in a Business Context - The student will be introduced to IS development and implementation in a business context. It focuses on the challenges that we face in practice and how to cope with the complexities. The course introduces a range of methods and techniques that can be used to understand, plan and execute the processes in which IS are developed, implemented, evaluated and modified, to enable the student to participate in the IS acquisition processes of the businesses.

Project Management: The Managerial Process including PRINCE2 - The aim of the course is to provide the student with knowledge about central topics related to working in projects. The course discusses several project types and relates tools and techniques and project management behaviour to different types of projects.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

An insight to Digital innovation and Business Transformation will be one of the specialisation courses. The course centres on the impact of digital technologies on society in general and modern companies in particular. More specifically, the course focuses on the potential for innovation and business transformation in new and emerging digital technologies.

Moreover, the student will be introduced to IS Strategy and Management, which is a course that aims to provide the students with an understanding of IS strategic management and how IT resources can be managed within organisations in order to create long business opportunities and benefits.

Alongside the course of IS Enterprise Architecture introduces the students to strategic and technological aspects of Enterprise Architecture. IS Enterprise Architecture is one of today’s best performing tools to enable long term strategic advantage. Enterprise Architecture provides a long-term view of a company’s processes, systems and technologies that create and support the core capabilities of organisations.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
