This Postgraduate Certificate has been designed for engineering professionals who are interested in developing their careers into systems engineering or project management roles in the defence and security domains
Students will develop a powerful set of skills and knowledge about defence and security systems and gain awareness and understanding of the economic and organisational context within which defence and security systems are developed, including the limitations these can impose. Depending on the modules chosen, students may focus more on business, project management, reliability or design aspects.
Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.
The programme consists of four taught modules of 15 credits each.
Students must take Defence and Security Systems (15 credits) and either three from the list below or two from the list below and one optional module.
Teaching and learning
The programme consists of four taught modules, each of which is delivered as a five-day block week consisting of a blend of interactive lectures, small-group exercises and presentations, case studies and workshop activity. Formative feedback is given to students throughout the modules. Modules are formally assessed through coursework to be completed a few weeks after the module, and for some modules there is also a short test or a 1.5 hour written examination.

Systems engineering is a highly sought-after expertise, particularly in engineering and technology-based organisations.

The programme combines interactive lectures, group exercises and case studies to reinforce key points. On successful completion of the 60-credit programme, students may choose to apply to transfer their credit towards a 120-credit Postgraduate Diploma or a 180-credit MSc in Systems Engineering Management.
The MSc in Systems Engineering Management (which students may choose to go on to study on successful completion of this Postgraduate Certificate) is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
The Research Excellence Framework, or REF, is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. The 2014 REF was carried out by the UK's higher education funding bodies, and the results used to allocate research funding from 2015/16.

The Master of International Security is a 180-credit course. Our unique National Security Studies MA is designed to bring together UK security policy practitioners, representatives from the private sector and policy-interested postgraduate students.
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of national security issues and the increasing focus on cross-governmental responses to security challenges. The course will also deal with conceptual and theoretical questions relating to national security.
The course will provide a mixture of UK national security analysis, with analysis of national security approaches in the international context.
The course will be delivered by a team of academics from the Centre for Defence Studies (CDS) led by John Gearson, Professor of National Security Studies and Director of CDS and Dr. Nina Musgrave (course tutor and Assistant Director of CDS) with guest lectures from practitioners, that may include Sir David Omand and Lord Peter Ricketts amongst others.
The course in National Security Studies is unique by bringing together security policy practitioners and postgraduate students in the Department of War Studies. The core module in National Security Studies will be delivered on a weekly basis over two terms and will consist of highly interactive lectures and group sessions with academics and experienced officials that may include Professor Sir David Omand and Professor Lord Peter Ricketts amongst others.
The course will enable participants to develop an in-depth understanding of national security both in the UK and from an international perspective. The course will also focus on cross-governmental responses to security challenges. The course will be structured around key themes such as strategy, counter-terrorism and ethics in national security.
The course culminates in the King’s National Security Policy Briefing, where participants present their policy ideas to an elite panel of UK security practitioners.
This course has been designed to train security practitioners and postgraduate students in the fundamentals of national security, while also exposing them to practical and conceptual issues and challenges such as cyber security, counter-terrorism and the oversight of national security. The course will enable students to critically analyse national security and will educate students in key national security themes and allow them to critically analyse developments in the field.
Per 40-credit module:
For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have 40 hours of teaching. You will also have 360 hours of self-study.
Per 20-credit module:
For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have 20 hours of teaching. You will also have 180 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
For the dissertation module, you will have 12 hours of dissertation supervision and guidance workshops to complement the 588 hours of self-study.

The MSc in Cyber Security and Management is designed for those wishing to develop a career as a cyber security professional, or to take a leading technical or managerial role in an organisation critically dependent upon data and information communication technology. It is suitable for those from a computer science or information technology education background or courses with a significant component of either. Work experience will also be considered.
In 2010, the UK government announced a 650 million pound investment strategy into Cyber Security & declared that Cyber-Security had become a ‘tier 1’ priority alongside international terrorism and major national incidents. The UK is one of many governments around the world which recognize the serious nature of the threat that is emerging from the cyber-sphere. Our goal for the MSc programme is to give focus to the strategic deployment and implementation of Cyber Security within an organization. We want to develop strategic thinkers who understand the Cyber threat to an organization and its resources and are able to build and support secure systems that support the strategic growth of a business. The course covers all aspects of Cyber Security including network security, computer security and information security. Alongside this, the course focuses on the business context so that students can progress their careers more rapidly through organisations and aim very particularly at management positions.
When you study the MSc Cyber Security and Management at WMG, Warwick, you will gain an exposure to industry that is unparalleled in many HEIs. The course is modular; each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 9 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week.
Modules are assessed by Post Module Assignment - this is typically a further 40 -60 hours of work.The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%. This should take approximately 900 hours of study time. An oral examination is held upon completion.

GCHQ, the UK government's National Technical Authority for Information Assurance, identified the shortage of cyber professionals as a concern that needed to be addressed. Part of their strategy was to identify cyber security master's courses that would "... help prospective students make better informed decisions when looking for a highly valued cyber security qualification".
At the University of Warwick, we specifically designed MSc Cyber Security Engineering to meet GCHQ's demanding requirements. MSc Cyber Security Engineering received provisional certification by GCHQ in 2015.
If you are an EU or international student, you should value GCHQ certification, just as much as any UK student. The content of the course is internationally applicable.
CSE currently comprises eight compulsory 15-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. For 2018 entry, additional modules may be added.
The curriculum is divided in eight taught modules and the project. Each module is taught in a one week blocks. Typically these are spaced approximately three weeks apart. It is during this time between modules that you will complete assessed assignments.
The individual project commences in February. By June it will fully occupy your study time with taught modules typically finished in May.
The number of taught modules and the weighting of the project in MSc Cyber Security Engineering is different from most other programmes in the WMG taught Master's portfolio.
Tutors adopt their own distinctive style within their taught weeks. Most modules are taught by more than one tutor, which, together with the wide range of guest speakers, gives real breadth of insight into any topic. The external input is especially evident in the Enterprise Cyber Security module where colleagues from IBM make a substantial contribution to the week's activities.
Graduates can expect rapid career progression in within a wide range of organisations relating to cyber security in a range of roles.
