This course explores recent developments in theories of behavioural decision-making science. It will enable you to critically examine theories of judgement and decision-making motivated by research in memory, perception, categorisation, reasoning, social psychology, economics, political and management sciences. The career-focused modules are designed to build on your workplace skills and develop new skills.

-This course will enable you to develop the skills to evaluate research findings and to relate these findings to practical applications and solutions. It facilitates and encourages interaction between theory, policy and practice in relation to people's judgements and choices in politics, business, retail, health, leisure and sport.
-You will benefit from regular public lectures organised by the Group for Decision, Thinking and Risk and delivered by internationally recognised researchers in the fields of decision-making, thinking and risk. In addition, you can attend weekly departmental research seminars, where international scholars and staff members present recent research findings.

What will you study?

You will cover recent developments in normative, descriptive and experience-based theories of choice, as well as the impact of experience and expertise on judgements and choice. You will be introduced to applications of judgement and decision-making research in areas such as consumer behaviour, politics, sports, economics and health, providing a firm basis in both the theory and practice of cognitive science and decision-making. You will also explore a selection of current research topics relevant to individual and managerial decision-making, wellbeing and policy-making.

Assessment

Assessment methods include essays, in-class tests, unseen examinations, laboratory reports and a dissertation.

Explore the interesting intersection of psychology and economics. You’ll gain a deep, well-rounded understanding of human behaviour and learn how to predict it.

This MSc enables you to delve deeply into the two inter-related disciplines of psychology and economics, in order to better explore, understand and predict the decisions people make.

Combining economic modelling with what psychology can tell us about individual behaviour and emotions you’ll learn to create highly accurate models for predicting human behaviour, which can then be used to empower behaviour change at both a micro and macro level.

This course is ideal if you are seeking to work in any area where understanding human decision-making is critical. This ranges from industry and healthcare, to developing new technologies or policies, and beyond.

The course has been designed from a truly interdisciplinary perspective, bringing together specialist teaching and expertise from both the Department of Psychology and Department of Economics.

You’ll work with expert, research-active, staff who’ll collaborate to deliver the content, give you exposure to the latest issues and trends, and links with employers, and ensure you gain the interdisciplinary insights that will set you apart in the jobs market.

You will leave this course with:

The Cognitive and Decision Sciences MSc at UCL studies the cognitive processes and representations underlying human thought, knowledge and decision-making. It integrates a wide range of disciplines and methodologies, with the core assumption that human cognition and choice are computational processes, implemented in neural hardware.

About this degree

Key topics include the nature of computational explanation; the general principles of cognition; the scope of rational choice explanation; probabilistic models of the mind; learning and memory; and applications to economics and business. The programme involves training in experimental design and methodology, building computational models and undertaking original research.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 10,000–12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

Programme Assessment

The majority of the units will be assessed via exams, however much of your time will also be spend researching and writing your dissertation which concentrates on a topic of your choice.

What you will study

There are two pathways available to students studying the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management course. Modules of study for each pathway depend upon whether students complete a 60 Credit Dissertation or a 20 Credit management project. The normal mode of study will be to undertake the 20 credit management project route.

Route One

- Sustainable Supply Chain Management (20 credits)
The module will explore the strategic need, role and value for logistics, purchasing and supply chain research within organisations in order to achieve sustainable supply chain networks in the future. Examining the major changes that are currently affecting logistics and supply chain strategies and how management in the future will be influenced by new structures, reconfiguration of material and information flows, the role of technology in evolving supply chains and the key issues in managing this transition process. This module aims to provide an integrative view of the complex inter- and intra-organisational dynamics which contribute to sustained organisational success and maximisation of competitive advantage. Exploring the sustainable supply chain from a global and local perspective.

- Commercial Relationships (20 credits)
This module explores the
 theory and practical application that underpins the processes involved in
formation of commercial agreements and relationships with external organizations.The module will examine the
current and relevant approaches to achieve an effective commercial agreements
by identifying with and critically evaluating the activities and documentation involved; the legal processes and terms and the main contractual arrangements required for a commercial agreements and relationship with customers and / or suppliers.

- Strategic Operations Management (20 credits)
This module aims to provide an appreciation of operational processes, techniques, planning and control systems with reference to both manufacturing and service industries from a qualitative and quantitative perspective.

- Globalisation of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (20 credits)
This module aims to identify the key drivers and trends that are increasing the globalisation of industries, markets and sectors, including the role of the SME. Also explore the structure and management and main activities of a global and international logistics and supply networks.

- Strategic Systems Thinking (20 credits)
This module aims to develop and enhance the skills and knowledge explored to enable participants to actively consider how they may personally make a difference in the different strategic contexts which may confront them. In particular, students will focus on innovative practices and an inclusive social approach to business and organisational development.

- Economies, Markets and Decision Making in International Contexts (20 credits)
The module aims to develop the ability to analyse the macroeconomic and micro frameworks within which strategic decisions are made. To develop the ability to solve problems which relate to management decision-making in the context of changing economic and market conditions.

- Project Management and Consultancy Skills (20 credits)

The module explores the concept, theories and practice of project management and consultancy skills. This module builds on the research methodology skills and requirements of critical debate established throughout the program and shows how these key skills are vital within a business context to ensure rigorous decision making. Learning and teaching methods

You can study the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management full-time, part-time or online. The full-time programme starts in September and February.

Full-time: Full-time students study Stages One and Two in an academic year, followed directly by the dissertation. Part-time students usually complete one stage each academic year followed by the dissertation.

Part-time: We offer part-time weekend delivery, where you come to the University for one weekend every six weeks. The MBA in Management aims to build on our long-established expertise in the area of postgraduate training by offering a one-year modular MBA programme which focuses on developing participants’ academic and managerial skills in areas such as organisational behaviour, marketing strategy, e-business and new venture creation. It provides an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

International Strategic Management: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

Marketing Strategy: This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.

Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

New Venture Creation: This module examines the advantages and disadvantages of the various routes to business start-up, including new venture creation, or establishing a business based on your own expertise, experience and ideas; buying an established business; purchasing a franchise; and succession through a family firm, an increasingly common way of becoming involved in entrepreneurial activity.

Knowledge Management: This module examines the processes whereby organisations and individuals develop and utilise their knowledge bases. Successful knowledge management hinges on people, culture and technology. As such it has professional and academic links with organisational behaviour and organisational learning.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

International Financial Management: In this module the financial management of multinational companies and the influence of macroeconomic, fiscal, currency and political environments on business and financial decision-making are examined in an international and global context.

European Business: This module examines the opportunities and constraints faced by businesses that operate on a pan-European basis. Emphasis is placed on the multi-dimensional characteristics of an economic and social space that is subject to a unique system of supra-national governance.

Public Sector Management: This module identifies the distinctive characteristics of the public sector in a competitive market-driven environment. This course provides the advancing health care professional wishing to study at Masters level, an opportunity to learn the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage patients with complex lymphoedema. The course will equip students with the necessary theory underpinning these skills and explore the evidence base and facilitate development of decision-making skills at an advanced level. Lymphoedema Advanced Practice
This course provides the advancing health care professional, wishing to study at Masters level, with an opportunity to extend the skills and knowledge of the Managing Complex Lymphoedema course to a range of complex lymphoedema patients in the context of the most contemporary evidence and themes. The course will facilitate the application of advanced skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. It will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level. Masterclasses, seminars and workshops support further development of the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field and is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning.

The Marketing programme includes an all-important approach to management decision-making as well as a set of business functions. Marketing is indispensable in top management's choices of served markets, competitors, and business portfolios. Customers are central to marketing, which to a large extent involves making promises to customers and then meeting the expectations thus created. This is accomplished through the firm's own value creation activities, but also through support for the value creation process of customers, channel members and other stakeholders. These activities and processes are often international in scope, which is reflected in the content of the different courses in various ways. The international aspect of the marketing programme is also evident in the international faculty and study body, as well as in the possibility to study abroad for a semester.

Thus, the marketing programme prepares you for a wide range of international management careers within the private and public sectors including:

The programme in Marketing qualifies you in state-of-the-art approaches to each of the following marketing policy areas:

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES
In the first semester four prerequisite courses offer you an advanced insight into the theories of social sciences that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of marketing problems.

The Marketing Research course gives you a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical studies that can support decisions in the marketing policy areas. The course will cover major research tasks and methods including the construction of questionnaires, scale development, observational methods, response models and choice models.

The Marketing in Context course enable students to identify and analyse the stakeholders, flows and interactions, which are impacted by and which impacts on particular changes in the boundary conditions of a marketing system. Also, you will be able to analyse macro-marketing environments and marketing systems in order to develop strategies, which further the aims of the focal stakeholders, whether these are private companies, governmental and/or non-governmental organisation.

Economics of Strategy
This course studies how firms create a competitive advantage and maintain it, and analyses strategic choices regarding the boundaries of the firm, the incentive mechanisms and the organisational structure that will best serve their strategies.

The Economic Psychology covers the fundamentals of human behaviour in economic contexts, from a social cognition perspective as well as from a judgment and decision-making perspective. The course applies fundamental theories and methods to key areas in marketing, including consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, marketing management, pricing, communication, innovation, and relationship marketing.

SPECIALISATION COURSES
The second semester comprises the following compulsory specialisation courses

Marketing Communication discusses the role of communication as well as of how the integration of several communication tools may support to achievement of the overall goal of the firm’s communication strategy.

Pricing Strategy provides an introduction to the firm’s pricing problem and provides practical techniques to understanding price setting in the context of the firm’s customers, costs and competition.

Innovation Management focuses on understanding the challenges, mechanisms and approaches for the management of innovation.

Managing Marketing Channels and Networks presents the concepts and analytical tools needed to design, build and manage distribution channels and networks.

Customer Relationship Management provides an insight into the theoretical and conceptual foundations of CRM, how CRM can enhance organisational performance and the role of measuring and managing customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and customer profitability.

Marketing Management and Strategy ends the semester by focusing on marketing management from a strategic perspective, combining and linking all policy areas to decision-making at top management level.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
