This course focuses on the integration of analytical techniques for optimisation with the decision issues and technology relating to logistics and supply chain management.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Students studying CILT accredited courses receive exemptions from the academic requirements for membership. Graduates of the MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management course at the University of Portsmouth with an overall average pass mark above 50% are eligible to apply for Chartered Membership (CMILT) once they have gained the necessary experience.

Module Details

Supply chain management is a philosophy, the implementation process and the control of this process through which different entities within a supply chain aim to streamline their activities to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of meeting final customer requirements. A variety of different techniques will be investigated, ranging from conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches, to computer-based models.

Here are the units you will study:

Supply Chain Management: This unit enable you to develop advanced skills so that you can deal with problems of supply chain management across different products, locations, and companies. The types of problems studied in this course are encountered in industry (e.g. retail, discrete or continuous production and logistics service providers) as well as in service organisations (e.g. banks, hospitals and law firms). Managers dealing with such problems are known under various titles, including production, operations, supply (chain), inventory, purchasing, distribution or logistics managers.

Logistics Modelling: Most problems arising in the fields of logistics and supply chain management have sufficient complexity and detail that they require the use of sophisticated modelling techniques. This unit looks at two of the most commonly used methodologies for modelling and solving logistics problems: simulation and heuristic techniques. In both cases a computer package is used to assist solution. The techniques will be demonstrated with a range of case studies drawn from the field of logistics including transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning and vehicle routing.

Operations Management: This unit teaches operations management techniques that are relevant to logistics. The commonly used techniques of linear and integer programming will be taught using Microsoft Excel based methods for solution. You will look at case studies covering production planning, transportation, logistics planning and supply chain configuration. You will also be taught about locating facilities such as factories, distribution centres, cross docking centres and retail outlets. The effective scheduling of labour force and machines will be demonstrated, and current state-of-the art production planning models will be covered.

Strategic Logistics: This unit looks at the field of logistics from a strategic point of view. A number of quantitative techniques for strategic decision making such as decision analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis and queuing theory are introduced in the context of logistics applications. The topic of strategic decisions in transportation modelling is then covered. The unit is completed by the analysis of a number of case studies relating to different applications of logistics with respect to financial, environmental, societal and economic objectives.

Project (Masters Logistics): This unit allows you to conduct research into a larger scale or challenging logistics problem. The project may be practical or theoretical and may arise either from the supervisor's research interests or from your own desire to study a particular topic or situation. Typical areas of logistics in which the project will be conducted include (but are not limited to) transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning, green logistics, facility location and vehicle routing.

There is a national and international need for scientists with skills in GIS-based analysis and decision support complemented by a deep knowledge of domain-specific models and analytical methods that can be brought to bear on environmental issues and their social consequences. The MSc provides an ideal foundation for PhD research, or for prospective employment within research organisations, consultancies, government departments and a wide range of industries.

- Employability
A student on the first cycle of the course came with work experience in water engineering in several Middle Eastern countries. He took the options in Spatial Decision Support, Network and Locational Analysis, Geodemographics and Population Geography, and Spatio-Temporal Analysis and Data Mining to broaden and add depth to his skills base; his dissertation was undertaken with Kuwait's Environmental Public Authority. He spent a year acting as a consultant on water engineering projects worldwide and returned to UCL in September 2013 to study for a PhD.

This course provides students with the theoretical foundations of marketing along with an added appreciation of the skills required in solving analytical and practical marketing problems.

Students will consider the use and application of management science techniques in a variety of marketing and business contexts through participation in courses in marketing management, marketing decision analysis, business statistics and forecasting, marketing research methods, and more advanced applications in credit risk management, problem solving and spreadsheet modelling skills and data mining.

Over the three months of summer, you'll complete a piece of independent research, guided by a supervisor. The 10,000 word dissertation is worth 80 credits and offers you the chance to examine a topic in depth and to develop your academic research skills.

Most students on the MSc in Health Economics choose to do a summer placement under the supervision of an experienced health economist. These differ from the standard dissertation as the placement supervisor suggests the research topic. A list of topics is circulated in the middle of the Spring term and you are allocated to your preferred placement before the Easter vacation.

The summer placements involve many different institutions including academic research units, the NHS and pharmaceutical companies. Most students are based in UK but in recent years placements have taken students to Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Vietnam and the USA.

While you shouldn't try to organise your own placement, suggestions for topics and host institutions are always welcome. These should be given to your course director.

Introduction

The MSc Crisis and Disaster Management programme aims to develop a better understanding of approaches to crisis, risk and disaster and the impact that such events may have on businesses, communities and nations. In particular, the programme addresses the issues of interruption to business and the need for preparedness, response and recovery strategies to minimise both economic and human losses arising from crises and disasters of both natural and human origins.

There is an increasing global demand for businesses, communities and nations to increase their resilience to potential crises and disasters, particularly through using the principles of crisis and disaster management, disaster preparedness, response and recovery planning. The use of simulations and engagement with practitioners gives you the opportunity to develop practical knowledge and insight about the processes and procedures associated with crisis and disaster management.

You will learn to differentiate between the various phases of crisis and disaster management and be encouraged to critically reflect and appraise alternative approaches to managing crises and disasters. The programme also aims to develop your knowledge and skills in risks appraisal, operations management, and crisis communication. You will have the opportunity to learn how to identify and address conflict and vulnerability within organisations and disaster zones and how to address these effectively.

How You Study

The Crisis and Disaster Management MSc covers both topics from both a theoretical and professional perspective. Approaches to crisis and disaster management are taught through case studies from a broad range of sectors.

Postgraduate level study involves a significant proportion of independent study exploring the material covered in lectures and seminars. As a general guide, for every hour in class students are expected to spend two - three hours in independent study.

If you are planning to study the degree on a part time basis, you will be studying two modules per term with 4-6 hours of contact time on a weekly basis.

The Lincoln International Business School has an experienced team of staff, which is made up of academically and professionally qualified lecturers with relevant industrial experience and finance experts with wide research interests.

Behavioural Analysis has become a major feature of the work of governments and other organisations in recent years, and has an increasingly high profile as its  importance receives wider recognition. Whilst Behavioural Analysis is often thought of as an area of Economic Psychology, it is in fact a mixture of Economics, Psychology, Management and Social Sciences, and with its relevance for the analysis of public policy, political opinions, and spending patterns, it is becoming an increasingly important element of modern organisations and their operations. Behavioural analysis is increasingly popular with financial institutions, marketing, government departments and regional development agencies, such as city regions, and those charged with economic development including international institutions operating in developing countries.

The MSc Behavioural and Economic Science programme provides specific training for specialist roles in behavioural analysis and policy design for applications within the commercial and government sectors. The degree is designed for those with a background in behavioural analysis or decision analysis from Economics, Management, Psychology, Behavioural Science or Decision Sciences (although applicants from other disciplines will be considered based on experience and specific qualifications). It also provides an ideal preparation for those interested in research into modern government, politics, or public policy, and provides the necessary basis for continuation onto research degrees.

The course covers the theory and methods applied in behavioural analysis, focussing on the development of technical skills and core knowledge of behavioural biases and behavioural policy design. It involves external experts from organisations such as BIT and HMRC in the design or delivery of some of the modules on the programme in order to ensure the relevance of content to current users of behavioural analysis. Students are able to incorporate internships or placements into their studies (subject to any visa restrictions that may apply) and the Business School’s placement unit is able to advise on how students’ applications.

Course Content

The PGcert consists of two compulsory modules. Modules can vary from year to year, but these offer a good idea of what we teach.

Intelligence Analysis Foundations, Methods and Applications:
This module examines the core concepts of the cognitive process involved in intelligence analysis and associated cognitive errors and biases, and promotes critical understanding to the effectiveness of different methods of intelligence analysis to domains and applications of intelligence. You will gain hands on experience in applying structured analytic techniques, quantitative methods, and traditional analysis methods. The module also draws lessons from other disciplines and examines the analytical implications of organisational aspects in intelligence. Throughout the module, you will undertake the Validation of Intelligence Scenarios and Analysis (VISA).
VISA is a scenario based intelligence analysis exercise covering open source intelligence collection plan, source evaluation and analytical techniques evaluation on contemporary case where denial and deception is potentially involved.

Contemporary Threats and Analytical Methodology:
This module hosts the Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise (BASE).
BASE provides you with an opportunity to undertake a simulated intelligence analysis on a real-world subject. It is designed to emulate the interdepartmental assessment methods of the British Joint Intelligence Committee, and gives you a chance to apply hands-on analytical principles and methods learned abstractly in the other Intelligence Analysis taught courses.

Teaching

Thematic Video Lectures (TVLs) 
The thematic video lectures and reading materials will provide grounding in the theoretical, methodological and practical issues upon which good research in intelligence and security studies is conducted. It will focus on providing conceptual mapping to the subject. The Lecturer video interaction with students will be supported by well-structured lecture slides. This is to be followed by problem based learning where students engage in practical exercises, case studies, and simulations.

Multidisciplinary Teaching
The programme design enables students to examine intelligence analysis in multidisciplinary approach. Security Studies, Military History, Organisational Theories, Law, Cognitive Psychology and Probability together contribute to thorough and comprehensive approach to studying Intelligence.

Residential Week
Students join Brunel campus for one week, dedicated to supporting the teaching and assessment. During the Residential Week, you will benefit from live seminars and discussions with experts in the field.

Effective Interaction
Lecturers provide timely feedback on students’ regular short assignments, where they demonstrate understanding of key concepts and develop regular interaction with teaching team.
Peer-to-Peer review is an integral part of the online design, where students comment in their colleagues short assignments and engage in discussions. 
Lecturers have regular real-time online office hours, where they can engage with students in live discussions.
The Residential activities further supports the cohort atmosphere where students engage in joint academic and social events.

Online Resources
To further utilise the online platform, students learning will be supported by the use of specialised analysis software tools in intelligence and they will engage with multimedia material where possible. Moreover, students will have access – via the integrated online platform – to supportive teaching materials and workshops provided by Brunel Graduate School and the several units of Brunel Educational Excellence Centre.
Students will have access to Online Journals, E-Books, Digital Copies, and other online materials (such as government declassified documents).

Assessment

Intelligence Analysis Foundations, Methods and Applications

The module is assessed via three types of assignments. The first leg of assessment is a portfolio of short assignments to be submitted online and aims at engaging with the key readings on regular basis, getting regular feedback for lecturers, and interaction among students.
The second leg of assessment is to be conducted while you are on campus. The residential week consists of Workshops – involving presentations and exercises – that will be used as opportunities to ‘test-fly’ your arguments that you wish to make in your final essay in a setting of open discussion and challenge from your peers as well as academic staff.
Finally, you submit your final essays where you reflect on your learning throughout the module.

Contemporary Threats and Analytical Methodology - Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise (BASE)
Brunel Analytical Simulation Exercise will involve you working in groups in a simulated joint, all-source intelligence assessment modelled on the actual joint assessment processes in the US and UK governments. You are assessed on a mixture of individual and group work.

Although there is a strong theoretical core, the course focus of the course is very much on the practical application of economic techniques to problems, and on developing the ability to communicate the insights that economic analysis can provide.

The International Economic Policy and Analysis MSc programme was uniquely created (and has been maintained) in conjunction with the UK Government Economic Service (GES) since 2012.

The course aims to provide you with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the latest developments in economics, with a focus on practical skills and development of the skills needed by a working economist. It is specifically aimed at those with a genuine interest in the application of economics to real-world situations.

The MSc in Operational Research aims to realise the potential of graduates, so that you immediately can play an effective role in providing model-based support to managers helping them to make better decisions at an operational/technical level.

If you wish to proceed to the Postgraduate Diploma you need to be in appropriate employment. The final decision as to what is "appropriate employment" remains with the University of Strathclyde.   • ill-defined problems
  • working in teams
  • the opportunity to use a variety of Business Analysis techniques
  • your work has an influence on the operation of your organisations

Your employment should require some analysis of business situations, in the private or public sector. Samples of your work will form the basis of reflection and learning projects, guided by a personal mentor.

MSc in Operational Research

Students who complete the Diploma and gain sufficient marks to proceed to the MSc will be expected to undertake a project. The project will be integrated with your employment. You'll have individual personal mentoring to guide you in reflection and learning.

To undertake this course you need to have:

  • Modern PC running Windows Vista or higher, web cam, headset with microphone
  • Minimum 2Mb/sec broadband connection
  • Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher

NB: Some of the course software is Windows-only and will not run under Linux or on Macintosh computers so use of a PC or PC-emulation software is essential if these operating systems are used.

Start dates

You can start the Certificate programme in October or April. The Diploma course usually runs between September and May, though there is some flexibility with this. It's followed by the project which has a flexible timetable.

Normally, a student should be able to complete the MSc programme in around two and a half years. Please contact us if you need advice about the best start date for you.

- Consulting for Analytics
You will learn the craft and skills required by analytic consultants, and which employers look for but often find lacking. It will cover process aspects of analytics projects, as well as skills in client interaction, problem structuring and data elicitation (with individuals and/or groups, and with hard/soft data), presenting data-driven analyses, report writing, and developing simple bespoke decision support systems.

- Discovery Analytics
You will be introduced to common statistical methods to explore and visualise cross sectional and temporal data. You will also learn about the design and conduct of data collection efforts, together with methods for dealing with data outliers and missing data. - Customer Analytics

Our high quality online courses are taught by the same expert academic staff who teach our courses in Sheffield and offer an alternative to coming to the UK. Guided by our staff, you can study at a pace that suits your personal circumstances. This can be an effective route for those who need to continue to work while they study. Businesses are increasingly collecting large amounts of information about their customers and activities. This ‘big data’ is big news with the media, businesses and government as they consider how to use this mass of information in a meaningful way.

Analysts use their expertise to make sense of this information and interpret it, enabling evidence-based business decisions. As a result, they’re in high demand with employers in every sector.

This programme gives you an insight into business analytics and explores how organisations can exploit the big data revolution. You’ll develop decision-oriented, quantitative analytical skills in a management context, and learn to sift intelligence from the growing volume and variety of data collected on many aspects of life.

Combining theoretical concepts with practical application, you’ll develop a unique mix of quantitative and behavioural skills relevant to data analyses, effective decision-making and management.

Course content

This programme will build your knowledge and understanding of how business analytics can provide evidence to support management decision-making. You’ll learn how to use different evidence-based approaches to make effective decisions, developing your skills in quantitative analysis.

You’ll consider advanced techniques such as forecasting and have the opportunity to apply your decision-making skills to real-life business and management scenarios.
