This course explores recent developments in theories of behavioural decision-making science. It will enable you to critically examine theories of judgement and decision-making motivated by research in memory, perception, categorisation, reasoning, social psychology, economics, political and management sciences. Degree information

Students choose between a decision science or economics stream and complete eight taught modules and a project. Some students will have the opportunity of an industry internship. All graduates will understand how the political, economic and physical context of health systems, frames the application of economics and decision science. Dissertation/report
All students undertake an indepedant research project, which culminates in a dissertation of up to 10,000 words (60 credits). Some students may conduct their research project together with industry partners.

Teaching and learning
Teaching will be delivered using a wide range of methods including classroom teaching, peer-led seminars, online lectures and practical exercises, moderated debates, group exercises and reading and writing tasks. Assessment varies from written examinations, to essays, portfolios and oral presentations.

Placement
A number of students will have the opportunity to undertake an industry placement. This will not be assessed as part of the course and access to placements is voluntary and based on open competition.

You will study a total of five units which incorporate a range of topics covering decision and risk analysis, strategic management accounting, investment strategies and business valuation. We will also guide you in applying sophisticated forecasting techniques to help you understand and anticipate business trends, and with our guidance you will learn how to design and deliver research to the highest standards. The course then concludes with your dissertation where you’ll engage in research on a topic of your choice.

Here are the units you will study:

Financial Analysis and Modelling: This will enable you to gain a critical awareness of the financial environment from both an accounting and finance perspective. You will learn to understand, analyse and interpret company reports, examine the role of the regulatory framework for corporate reporting and the stock market, and explore the pricing of securities. You will also cover the key areas of decision and risk analysis, alongside the process of decision making, key statistical concepts, and selecting and using appropriate analytical software tools as aids to decision making.

Strategic Business Planning and Control: You will start on this unit by considering the internal perspectives of the firm in areas such as business planning and control including issues such as budgeting, the design of management control systems and the development of spreadsheet-based decision support systems. You will then build on this foundation by developing a more strategic corporate perspective. You will explore the relationships between strategy, strategic management and strategic management accounting and set the latter in the context of the historical development of management accounting in general.

Managerial Finance and Financial Markets: You will be introduced to key theoretical issues relating to financial markets and institutions, investments and corporate financial management and their practical applications and limitations. The areas covered will encompass shareholder value and the goals of the firm and the process of shareholder value creation, project evaluation and the discounted cash flow model, capital market theories including the efficient markets hypotheses and the ideas of modern portfolio theory. From this core understanding you will move on to look at the psychological, institutional and agency theory factors that impact upon financial markets. You will consider key empirical research on the explanatory and predictive power of models in the context of implementing investment strategies. This will be assisted by guided critical analysis of research and analysis of live data.

Corporate Finance and Valuation: This unit will give you the opportunity to consider the primary financial decisions of the firm focussing on advanced capital budgeting techniques and the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories and financing policy, and dividend policy. You will appraise theories in the context of empirical research to facilitate critical understanding of the issues. Advanced study in business valuation will give you a practical understanding and further enable you to apply key professional techniques, which is particularly relevant for mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and private equity transactions.

Research Methods and Dissertation: This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training via lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. On completing this programme you will be ideally placed to develop your own research projects and work within professional research teams.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice. Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales). The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

Levels of evidence.
Harvard referencing.
Reflective writing.

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

MSc Health Economic

The MSc Health Economics course aims to create professionals who can independently access information and use the information to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to Health Economics medicine. The Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The course introduces skills, knowledge and competency in the clinical examination, ordering and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic tests and the consequent professional judgement and decision making to allow autonomous practice in a range of health care environments.

Course content

MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice approved and supported through Health Education England working across the West Midlands and the West Midlands Universities Advanced Practice Group.

This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. What you will study

There are two pathways available to students studying the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management course. Modules of study for each pathway depend upon whether students complete a 60 Credit Dissertation or a 20 Credit management project. The normal mode of study will be to undertake the 20 credit management project route.

Learning and teaching methods

You can study the MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management full-time, part-time or online. The full-time programme starts in September and February.

Full-time: Full-time students study Stages One and Two in an academic year, followed directly by the dissertation. Part-time students usually complete one stage each academic year followed by the dissertation.

Part-time: We offer part-time weekend delivery, where you come to the University for one weekend every six weeks. For those who want to tailor a programme that suits their needs, we can be flexible in terms of when, where and how often lectures take place. This is useful for organisations and associations.

There is a national and international need for scientists with skills in GIS-based analysis and decision support complemented by a deep knowledge of domain-specific models and analytical methods that can be brought to bear on environmental issues and their social consequences. The MSc provides an ideal foundation for PhD research, or for prospective employment within research organisations, consultancies, government departments and a wide range of industries.

- Employability
A student on the first cycle of the course came with work experience in water engineering in several Middle Eastern countries. He took the options in Spatial Decision Support, Network and Locational Analysis, Geodemographics and Population Geography, and Spatio-Temporal Analysis and Data Mining to broaden and add depth to his skills base; his dissertation was undertaken with Kuwait's Environmental Public Authority. He spent a year acting as a consultant on water engineering projects worldwide and returned to UCL in September 2013 to study for a PhD.

This programme is ideal if you wish to use your analytic skills to derive and obtain useful insights from large amounts of data. By equipping you with the rigorous modelling and consulting skills needed to understand, manage and communicate useful insights from ‘big data’, it prepares you to inform business decisions or government policies.

Taught modules are delivered by our group of internationally recognised management scientists who are actively working with business, government and non-profit organisations to tackle routine, strategic or policy problems.

Our industry advisory board ensures that the focus of our taught modules is of both academic and practical relevance. IBM, our partner, has jointly developed with us two modules (Customer Analytics and Leading Analytics Initiatives), and sponsors a student prize.

During the summer, you will undertake a supervised consulting or research project. This will give you the opportunity to apply powerful tools such as data mining, forecasting, optimisation, simulation and decision analysis to a particular area of business or policy, equipping you with skills highly prized by employers.

Core study areas include consulting for analytics, discovery analytics, decision analytics, managing big data, customer analytics, leading analytics initiatives, operations analytics, policy and strategy analytics, and a consulting or research project.

Programme modules

Semester 1:
- Consulting for Analytics
You will learn the craft and skills required by analytic consultants, and which employers look for but often find lacking. It will cover process aspects of analytics projects, as well as skills in client interaction, problem structuring and data elicitation (with individuals and/or groups, and with hard/soft data), presenting data-driven analyses, report writing, and developing simple bespoke decision support systems.

- Discovery Analytics
You will be introduced to common statistical methods to explore and visualise cross sectional and temporal data. You will also learn about the design and conduct of data collection efforts, together with methods for dealing with data outliers and missing data. Industry-leading tools that are in high demand from employers (e.g. SAS and SPSS) will be used.

- Decision Analytics
Your will be introduced to common operational research techniques to help determine the best course of action for a given decision or problem. Topics covered include optimisation, simulation and decision and risk analysis.

- Managing Big Data
Your will learn about the challenges and opportunities derived from the increased volume, variety, velocity and value of data that is available today. A range of big data topics will be covered including data type, data integration, data technologies, and data security.

Semester 2:
- Customer Analytics
You will focus on analytics techniques that can help organisations gain a deeper insight into customers’ behaviour and attitudes towards their products and services. It will cover approaches designed to provide a profile of customer segments, such as those grounded in data mining and multivariate statistical analysis. Industry-leading tools that are in high demand from employers (e.g. SAS and SPSS) will be used. There is an IBM sponsored student prize on this module.

- Leading Analytics Initiatives
You will learn about the issues associated with implementing an analytics capability in organisations. It will cover topics on how to develop an analytics strategy, how to embed analytics in organisational processes to ensure they deliver value, and how to deploy analytics throughout the organisation to improve decision making. There is an IBM sponsored student prize on this module.

- Operations Analytics
You will focus on analytics techniques that can help organisations to develop a better understanding of operational processes, and identify efficiency and cost reduction opportunities. Topics covered include advanced optimisation and simulation techniques.

- Policy and Strategy Analytics
You will focus on analytics techniques designed to tackle complex policy and strategic issues. It will cover approaches designed to explain the behaviour of complex social systems or assess the consequences of complex decisions, in order to provide the levers for policy and strategy making in a variety of sectors.

Summer:
- Consulting or Research Project

Assessment

Taught modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examinations.
The summer project is assessed via a written dissertation.

Business analytics is a new and rapidly developing field, and individuals with analytics skills are in short supply.
Graduates from this programme can expect to work as management consultants, business analysts, policy analysts, marketing researchers, operations researchers, and data scientists.
