Our programme consists of clinical training, formal taught elements and the completion of a research project and dissertation. The clinical training (60 per cent) in diagnosis and management of periodontal disease emphasises the practice of advanced techniques in periodontology and includes the relationship between periodontology and other dental disciplines. The formal teaching element (25 per cent) is designed to provide a wide scientific background in the practice of periodontology. Your supervised research project will constitute of 15 per cent of your total programme activity. All the taught and clinical modules in the programme are core modules.

You will have a wide range of opportunities and topic choices for your research project, which you will conduct in our exemplary modern research laboratory and clinical facilities.

The full programme includes attendance at weekly new patient diagnostic clinics, clinical practice in periodontology including surgical, antimicrobial, regenerative and mucogingival procedures, management of periodontal disease in patients with other restorative problems, and principles and practice of implant dentistry.

Gain advanced research skills relevant to clinical psychology and a broad understanding of mental health service provision.

The course is for you if you’re eventually seeking a place on a DClin Psych clinical training degree and are an existing professional in other health-related disciplines. It is run in conjunction with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

You’ll be taught by our faculty who have research strengths in psychopathology and clinical psychology, and guest lecturers including local practitioners.

How will I study?
You take a series of taught modules. You’ll gain knowledge and skills in key areas of clinical psychology and mental health.

Degree information

Students develop an understanding of the techniques, methods and contemporary findings of developmental cognitive neuroscience and are trained to interpret clinical case presentations within the context of the latest scientific findings of developmental brain-behaviour relationships. They gain knowledge of professional, ethical and service delivery issues in assessment and rehabilitative work.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma consists of eight core modules (120 credits), full-time nine months is also offered. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Assessment is by two essay journal papers (up to 3,000 words each), two commentary papers (up to 1,500 words each) and four 90-minute unseen examinations, and the dissertation examined by viva voce.

This course is for you if you’re a Psychology graduate with an interest in clinical training, and you want to strengthen your credentials for the competitive entry process. The course is run jointly by the Department of Psychology and the Coventry-Warwick Clinical Psychology Doctorate programme. Currently, we can only consider you if you’re a UK/EU student with a Psychology degree that provides Graduate Basis for Chartership (British Psychological Society). This policy reflects that UK doctoral training in clinical psychology is available primarily to UK/EU citizens.

You will study a range of modules on clinical research methods, evidence-based practice in adult, older adult and child/adolescent populations and clinical case analysis. You will also have the opportunity to do a six-month NHS placement as an honorary assistant psychologist, which is particularly valuable if you’re
considering a career in the clinical profession.

The majority of our graduates proceed to NHS assistantships and clinical PhD studentships. Many of our postgraduates have progressed to DClin courses, including Coventry-Warwick, Institute of Psychiatry (Kings), Oxford, Manchester and Trinity College Dublin.

Course overview

This course is designed for Psychology graduates who plan to apply for admission to doctoral training programmes in Clinical Psychology, and are in the process of strengthening their credentials for the competitive entry process.

The taught components of the course include modules on research methods tailored to clinical applications, evidence-based practice in adult, older adult, and child/adolescent populations, learning disabilities, and clinical case analysis. Teaching provision is shared between academics with research interests in the relevant topics and practising clinicians with current experience in Psychology services within the NHS.

The practical component of the course is a unique 6-month research/audit placement in a local NHS trust that maintains a training relationship with our doctoral programme. Students are assigned to placements, where they will work with Clinical Psychologists on clinical audit and research, as applicable to the specific setting of the placement. On-site supervision is provided by a clinical supervisor. Every effort is made to match students' interests with the available placement opportunities. The formal output of the placement is a written dissertation comprising a literature review and a report of the research work carried out during the placement, to be completed under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching consists of lectures and seminars plus additional workshops. You will have an average of 8 – 10 hours of lectures and 4 hours of seminars per week in Term 1. Assessment is mainly by submission of assignments and a class test.

In Term 2 you will be out on placement for 3 days a week. This will enable you to gain practical experience of working with Clinical Psychologists within NHS trusts. You will be assigned to 6 month long placements during which you will complete 2 pieces of academic work.

NOTE: This course will not lead to a license to practice as a Clinical Psychologist. It is a qualification that will significantly strengthen students' academic and work experience credentials required for entry into the professional doctoral training that is required for licensed clinical practice.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life. The Master’s degree in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology at Swansea is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology in healthcare settings. Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level.
