MSc Database Systems provides the opportunity to develop the skills to manage the development and implementation of a maintainable database system, taking into account user requirements. You will also have the opportunity to work on a substantial database project of your own choice. In addition this course will help you to become Oracle accredited; however the course is not a training course in Oracle.

This course will help you to develop the skills and understanding needed as a database developer. You will learn how to choose and use appropriate analysis and implementation tools, implement a database system to make best use of the hardware and/or software constraints, and monitor/fine-tune the implemented database for optimum efficiency. You will also develop skills in database administration and an understanding of the database administrator role. You will develop transferable skills in evaluation of ideas and concepts, effective communication, synthesis of ideas and become a reflective practitioner. You will have the opportunity to plan and carry out a supervised project to develop a substantial database system.

Assessment methods will include individual and group assignments, presentation, seminars and examinations.

The School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences provides an 'electronic learning' environment to facilitate flexible learning. This environment combines traditional face-to-face lecture/tutorial and practical sessions with additional, resource-rich, on-line materials allowing you to continue independent learning through a variety of approaches.

You will gain a firm foundation in the principles of object-oriented programming (software development), design and testing, understanding the role of database systems in information management as well as the theoretical and practical issues that influence the design and implementation of database management, systems and languages, and emerging computing technologies.

This practical course will develop your methods in a number of areas, whilst key skills and techniques of computational thinking and problem-solving are emphasised throughout. You'll also investigate novel application areas and environments where computing can be potentially beneficial.

This programme is run on the Wrexham campus on an intensive block basis, during half-terms and holidays, for 15 days in total.

The course combines academic study with Oracle certification training, and you will be encouraged to take the associated Oracle exams and become an Oracle Certified Associate. As an MBIS graduate, you may find work as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, project leader, IT manager, information management specialist, archivist or librarian.

The MBIS caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. Archives and recordkeeping

Records managers and archivists ensure that vital records of social and organisational activity are created, managed and made available to business for accountability, corporate memory, enterprise knowledge and cultural purposes. Work settings include most major private and public sector organisations, and archival institutions. Knowledge managers are concerned with developing strategies and processes for managing organisational knowledge and knowledge flows to achieve organisational goals, enhance performance and add value. A particular concern is developing an environment conducive to the creation, sharing and application of organisational knowledge, and systems that support these processes.

Business information systems studies

The general form of the course gives students the skills and knowledge to solve organisational information problems. The course caters for students who would like to be business analysts, information systems consultants and IT managers. Students will learn about information technology principles, systems analysis and design, enterprise architecture and systems, IT management and governance and project management. Students can select from a range of business information systems units to focus their studies in several areas of interest including business intelligence, user experience design and business process modelling.

Library and information science

Librarians and information specialists manage information and provide information services to clients in a wide range of contexts. They are concerned with analysing information needs, solving information problems, evaluating information sources, organising information, synthesising information into targeted information products, and training clients in the use of information products, services and systems. They work for commercial, government and community sector organisations, for information consultancies and as independent information brokers.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts, A, B and C. All students complete Part B (core studies). Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A (foundation studies) or Part C (advanced studies) or a combination of the two.

Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.

PART A. Foundations for advanced business information systems
These units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You will learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.

These units are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within business information systems to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to information systems and business process design, IT strategy, IT governance, IT management and related issues. Your study will focus on project management as well as a choice of several areas of enterprise IT and information management practice.

PART C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems.

You have two options.

The first is a minor thesis research program, consisting of a research project and a research methods training unit. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this first option.

The second option is a program of coursework involving advanced study and an Industry experience studio project.

Students completing the combined specialisation Archives and Recordkeeping/Library and Information Science complete the industry experience program.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a discipline cognate to information systems, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

This Masters programme provides state-of-the-art training in the latest advances in Digital Health Systems development and management. It's aimed at those who aim to become leaders in the field of Health IT, either for Health systems service delivery or for the Health & Wellness IT industry.

Graduates will gain essential skills and expertise in designing applications that are accessible and usable, and that comply with complex data governance within healthcare. You'll gain experience in managing, analysing and making use of data collected from personal devices (such as apps and wearables) and large scale health systems (such as electronic records). You'll also gain key software development and management skills that are critical for deploying health systems.

This course looking at the whole systems implementation of digital health systems is one of its kind in the UK.

This new and unique course is the first of its kind to offer technical graduates the opportunity to develop the core skills required to develop advanced health and wellness systems and technologies for improving the way we personally manage our lifestyles and how our care systems deliver better health to citizens.

You'll study

The course includes 120 credits of taught material - taken over the first two semesters - and a 60-credit digital health project that runs, typically, from May to September.

In addition to learning about the design, development and evaluation process for personal health and wellness devices and systems and larger scale hospital and community based IT systems, students will also be trained to understand and use techniques for using the data that these systems produce to support decision making and planning and delivery of better care.

Work placement

Student projects will be conducted in close collaboration with the Digital Health Research group partners.

Furthermore, the Digital Health Research group has close links with Scotland’s innovation centres (Digital Health & Care Institute, Data Lab), the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, The City Observatory, and the Centre for Health Policy. These links provide a range of opportunities for practical partnerships with the leading organisations and industries in the field.

Major projects

Working closely with the Digital Health research group means students will be alongside a group that has conducted major collaborative research and development projects and evaluations within the UK and internationally. The group were lead investigators in the evaluation of a £37 million Innovate UK programme to deploy assistive digital health and wellness technologies at scale across the UK.

The group is also involved in organising key national and international conferences such as the British Computer Society (BCS) Health Informatics conference and the ACM conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Example projects include: Design of mobile apps for Managing Diabetes; Cost Benefit Analysis of Technology Enabled Care; Evaluating the Barriers to Implementing Electronic Personal Health Records at Scale.

Module Details

The academic year is divided into two parts. The first part comprises the lecture, workshop, practical and field work elements of the course, followed by a dissertation which will take approximately five months to complete.

Here are the units you will study:

Principles of Geographic Information Science: Beginning with an overview of the development of GIS, the first part of this unit examines data sources and data capture, as well as hardware and software tools. The second part deals with vector-based data structures and data management, followed by vector GIS operations, such as overlay and buffering. You will undertake a project to create a GIS of your own, which may be presented as a seminar session. Practical exercises are undertaken using MapInfo. You will then go on to develop an understanding of raster-based approaches to GIS, cartographic modelling and related areas of image processing which are often applied in remote sensing. Topics include raster data models and data compression techniques, raster GIS and cartographic modelling, imaging systems and image processing, geometric correction techniques and GIS/remote sensing integration in the raster domain. Practical work uses MapInfo, ArcGIS - ArcMap and ERDAS Imagine.

GIS and Database Management Systems: Your major focus on this unit will be the use of industry-standard methods and tools to develop competence in the successive stages of database design, development and implementation. You will have an introduction to data analysis techniques, followed by an examination of alternative types of database system and the rules of relational database design. There is extensive treatment of the SQL query language in standard databases and for attribute query within a GIS. You will be introduced to advanced topics including database programming and computer-aided database design. You will also consider the Object-Relational databases and spatial data types, explore the use of spatial queries using the ORACLE relational database management system and examine procedural database programming and web database connectivity. Practical work for this unit uses the ORACLE relational database management system, running in full client-server mode.

Applied Geographic Information Systems: On this unit you will develop a general, inferential, model-based approach to the analysis of quantitative data within a geographical framework. You will examine a range of underlying concepts including model specification, bias, linearity, robustness and spatial autocorrelation. You will subsequently develop these in the context of a unified framework for analysis. Practical work is based on ArcGIS - ArcMap.

Research Methods and Design: This unit will introduce you to the basic principles of research design and methodology, enabling you to develop a critical approach to the selection and evaluation of appropriate methods for different types of research problem.

Modelling and Analysis and the Web: This unit gives you the chance to consider the use of GIS technology for creating terrain models and explore the basics of photogrammetry, as well as analytical and digital techniques for photogrammetric data capture. You will also look at Orthophotography, LiDAR and RADAR systems. ArcGIS is used for spatial analysis, such as buffering and overlay techniques. You will also explore and exemplify data transfer between GIS software systems and technologies for internet-based GIS.

Dissertation: This provides an opportunity for you to pursue a particular topic to a greater depth than is possible within the taught syllabus. It can take a variety of forms, for example GIS-based analysis of original data sources and digital datasets, case studies of GIS adoption in public or private sector organisations, the development of new software tools/applications or the design of GIS algorithms. The final submission takes the form of an extended written report or dissertation of a maximum of 15,000 words.

Programme Assessment

The course provides a balanced structure of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. You will learn through hands-on practical sessions designed to give you the skills in laboratory, computer and field techniques. The course also includes extensive field work designed to provide field mapping and data collection skills.

The majority of assessment takes the form of practical exercises and project-based activity. This enables you to become familiar with industry-standard software systems and develop your skills by applying your newfound expertise in areas that particularly interest you.

Module Details

Alongside a selection of key compulsory topics, you’ll also undertake a substantial project. This involves in-depth research, where you will apply the skills and knowledge from the taught part of the course to a practical computing problem, usually supplied by local businesses or other external clients.

Here are the units you will study:

Information Systems Development: The unit prepares and enhances skills for industry with specialisation in the areas of the software process, systems design, object-oriented analysis and relational database development. It provides a balance between theoretical and practical elements.

Information Systems Management: This unit introduces students to the project management of IS/IT developments and encourages understanding of the techniques and methods currently used. It is based on monitoring and managing the activities in a project development life cycle, covering estimating and planning techniques, design, implementation and integration, project team building and motivation, configuration management and risk management. The unit requires students to consider project management techniques applicable to the development of current types of information system and to apply these techniques and methods specifically to the task of website development.

Interaction in Computer Systems: This unit introduces interaction with and by computer systems, and the role of computer systems and data communications in network environments. Concepts of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and ergonomics are introduced to students, and used to analyse and assess interactive systems in terms of accessibility and usability.

Web Development: Website design and development is a central skill for IS professionals. It involves not only a basic understanding of how websites are constructed and served, but also an understanding of how the websites function as part of a user-computer interactive system. This requires a developed understanding both of users and of the information tasks they are trying to perform.

Master's Project: You will undertake either an engineering unit or a study project, during the summer period. The project offers students the opportunity to apply the taught material in the solution of a real-world problem directly related to their course. The engineering project usually involves building a piece of software to solve a problem. An example of the sort of thing you might do would be building an information system to address a specific organisation’s requirements. The study project usually involves undertaking a study of an information systems problem domain. An example of the sort of thing you might do for a study project would be an evaluation of the information systems impact of mobile devices on an organisation.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught using a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and lab sessions. You’ll also be required to spend a significant amount of time in private study, which may involve additional software development or research as appropriate to the topic you are currently studying.

You will encounter a range of assessment styles depending on the content and nature of the unit topic. This can include written assignments, presentations as well as group and individual lab-based assessments. However, the most significant assessment element is the final dissertation, which reports and reflects on your final project.

Student Destinations

On completing this course, you will be all set to enter into a wide variety of careers in the computing industry, progress onto computing research or use computing as an additional skill in support of your principal career. Many of our previous graduates have taken the course with a view to changing career direction, be it as part of an IT company or an IT department of a company or local government organisation.

You can also use the course as a route to an academic career by undertaking research study leading to a PhD, with the aim of eventually becoming a university lecturer or researcher.

Programme Aims

The programme is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. It aims to equip health care professionals and students from health-related disciplines, information technology, engineering or related backgrounds with advanced information technology skills for health care settings. The course contents will address the needs of health care providers and allow for the introduction, re-orientation and/or conversion to a field that is of direct relevance to the student's place of employment.

Mode and Duration of Study

This is a credit-based mixed mode programme with a normal duration of study of 1 year for full-time study and 3 years for part-time study. The maximum duration of study is 6 years.

This postgraduate Information Systems and Technology course is for students who have a keen interest in both information system development and information management. Students are either in the early stages of their career or have significant work experience in the area and wish to formalise their knowledge.

Information systems are a key part of an organisation's IT infrastructure. IT professionals who can manage a business's information resources, and understand the technologies and systems that enable this are key to a modern enterprise's success.

Our postgraduate Information Systems and Technology degree will equip you with the skills to develop and maintain information systems that align with the strategic needs of any organisation.

Rather than focusing on technical issues only, the course combines technological fundamentals with a systematic understanding of IT's broader business contexts, including human and organisational factors. The course exploits City's research expertise in both computing and information management to produce effective professionals with a broad understanding of IT underpinned by a firm grasp of key technical concerns.

The School's computer science laboratories are equipped with the latest up-to-date hardware and software. From Oracle’s leading commercial object-relational database server to PCs with state-of-the-art NVidia GPUs for computer graphics, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP etc you will have access to an array of tools to support your learning.

Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that your specialist knowledge and autonomy increase as you progress through each module. Active researchers and professionals guide your progress in the areas of information systems and management, project management and business processes.

Taught modules are delivered through a series of lectures together with either tutorials or laboratory sessions. Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem solving contexts or case studies. Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools.

City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

Assessment

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. Modules are assessed through a combination of written examinations, coursework, group work and presentations.

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop an autonomous research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply your learning to solve a real-world information system or information management problem. At the end of the project you submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

Students successfully completing eight modules and the dissertation will be awarded 180 credits and a masters level qualification. Alternatively, students who do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed eight modules will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. Successful completion of four modules (60 credits) will lead to the award of a postgraduate certificate.

Modules

The postgraduate Information Systems and Technology programme is made up of five core modules, three elective modules and a final project. All the electives are studied in the second term. You will take core and elective modules in three main streams: information, systems and technology. The third term is reserved for the project.

Modules include hands-on lab-based tutorials, group work seminars and presentations. We teach technical skills in SQL, JavaScript and PhP, as well as design skills using UML. You can pursue a practical MSc project in an application area of your choice.

The University of York’s Archaeology Department has been at the forefront of researching and developing archaeological computer applications since the early days of digital practice in the discipline and has hosted the first online peer-reviewed e-journal for archaeology since 1996. It also hosts the world-leading Archaeology Data Service, which is the UK’s national digital data archive for the historic environment.

What does the course cover?

Through a combination of academic studies, practical training, research and work placements, you will:
• Develop vital knowledge of the digital and internet technologies used for disseminating, publishing and archiving archaeological information.
• Learn practical skills in 3-D modelling, GIS, CAD and other technologies used for analysing and visualising archaeological information.

The course provides a detailed introduction to the broad range of information systems used in archaeology, and provides the opportunity to apply these systems in practice. The work placement and dissertation enable you to specialise in a particular technique or approach, giving you valuable practical experience in your areas of interest.

Who is it for?

The MSc in Archaeological Information Systems is designed for people who have a basic grounding in computer literacy and an interest in archaeology and heritage, and who wish to follow vocational training in archaeological information systems.

Many of our graduates go onto careers in archaeological computing, working in contract units or county-based records organisations. Others have founded their own consultancy businesses. Content

This one-year MSc course is taught via a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will study two core modules, two optional modules and four shorter skills modules of your choice. You will also gain valuable practical experience of applying information systems in the workplace on a work placement module. Finally, in the summer term you will develop your research and presentation skills by producing a dissertation and giving an assessed lecture.

Placement

Your work placement is a key feature of the course, providing valuable experience of using IT in an archaeological work environment. The placement offers you the chance to gain practical experience in a professional, academic or heritage environment. You will be able to work on projects that help you develop new skills or put into practice skills gained from your taught courses.

Aims
-To provide experience of computer applications within a workplace in the historic environment sector.
-To consolidate knowledge and understanding of computer applications from one or more of the taught modules.

Learning outcomes
Upon completing your placement you should have:
-Gained detailed knowledge of how information technology is applied in the workplace in the historic environment sector, under the guidance of experienced professionals.
-Developed an understanding of the contexts in which IT is applied, and of real world limitations.
-Developed your IT skills in one or more of the core areas covered by the taught programme (i.e. database design, web technologies, digital archiving, electronic publication, CAD, GIS and virtual reality modelling).

Applied Geographical Information Systems (Applied GIS)
Helps develop an in-depth knowledge of GIS based methods for monitoring social/human and natural environments. Establish an effective understanding of the spatial interaction of social/human and environmental factors and develop the capability to extract information from a variety of sources and to analyse and assess within a GIS framework.

Geographical Information Technologies (GI Technologies)
Aids critical understanding of the software engineering practices and standards that underpin database and web application development and the methodologies for implementing those practices in a GIS context. A critical understanding of the issues involved in designing the storage and use of geographical data in databases and web-based applications is forged. Also key is proficiency in the design, implementation and evaluation of small scale database and web-application projects.

Assessment details

All study routes employ web-based delivery and aim to provide the conceptual and technical framework required for an in-depth understanding of GIS. Each route has either core or elective units available and all incorporate a project and dissertation which involves the design and execution of an original study.
