Admin. Code §290-3-3-.48(1)(b). For entry into a cohort beginning in the Summer Term, the application portfolio is due in the Department by April 1. Assessment Center

The purpose of the Assessment Center is to first fulfill the regulatory requirement of a face-to-face interview with each applicant. The Assessment Center will also include other activities designed to provide additional information, particularly with respect to candidate dispositions and candidate writing skills, to adequately assess candidate aptitude for instructional leadership.

The faculty member of record has the responsibility of assigning the LiveText assessment (1, 2, 3, 4) for each objective, and instructional activities will also generate documentation for the electronic portfolio aspect of LiveText, which will append to the assessment ratings.

In the last decade, urban informatics has gained recognition as a new approach to the study of cities and urban life. This is partly due to the harnessing of big and open data relating to urban infrastructure, socio-economic profiles and activities that take place in cities; and in part a result of developments in urban science, computational social science and complexity theory.

This course will enable you to understand and promote the theory and science of smart cities and to analyse city-scale data. You’ll also gain the skills to transform this data into knowledge, capitalising on emerging developments in big data and interdisciplinary methods to tackle the world’s urban challenges. Unlike most existing courses that have a disciplinary focus, this course offers a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to urban studies that combines training in theoretical approaches with knowledge of practice-based methodological skills. This means you’ll develop the skills to understand, support, and manage urban systems, and harness the opportunities that sensor, mobile and internet technologies offer within smart cities.

This course, a collaboration between the Centre for Interdisciplinary methodologies (CIM) and the Warwick Institute for the Science of Cities (WISC), also provides a pathway to the PhD programme in Urban Science at WISC, if you intend to undertake further postgraduate research at doctoral level. Course content

Our current program is divided into two years.

In Master 1, you access a panorama of courses and visions that define the learning science of the 21st century. You acquire knowledge in structural fields such as game design, learning by doing, cognitive science, history and critical approach of the concept of innovation in education, open science basics and technologies for learning. Through a pedagogy impulsing collaborative projects in classes, you learn quickly from your teachers, peers and mentors who give you precious feedbacks and you become keen on building rapid prototypes, designing original learning scenarios and documenting your work to share it with the community through analytical papers, blog posts, open talks and public presentations.

The second part of your M1 year is dedicated to a full-time internship of 5 months that you can spend in a company, a startup, a school, an association, an NGO or a scientific lab. Thus, you extend your network, train yourself to understand the current ecosystem structuring educational issues at a local or a global issue and improve your expertise in field analysis, assessment of the existing resources and drafting recommendations for a desirable future.

In Master 2, you can design further your own learning experience and expertise by embarking in two new internships for the whole year: it can be in France or abroad. On a regular timeline, you have courses and workshops in order to dig the research basis of their experimentations: it means acquiring further knowledge in reading and commenting papers and articles, get used to leading and extracting data from interviews, records and all kinds of open platforms, building a research protocol and testing it, analyzing publically its results. And just like your research profile is being strengthened, your entrepreneurial self is challenged as well… In M2, you’ll learn to stimulate your creativity, will be aware of the design basics and accelerate your projects!

Note that if your profile fits the eligibility conditions, you can enroll directly in Master 2 and choose between two possibilities: either to enroll in two internships one after the other, either to catch back the content of M1 courses in the first semester, aside from the M2 courses of course! If it’s indeed a pretty full experience for one year long, it’s also for sure the opportunity for already trained students to live the experience of being in an incubator to test further their projects and benefit from the inputs of our community!

At the end of the two years, no doubt that your three researcher, creator and entrepreneur’s selves will be trained, whatever you’re willing to make out of them!

Job opportunities

We prepare our students to be the future change-makers of education. We believe that the learning transition is transforming the present jobs in education (teacher, pedagogical designer) but also creates new jobs in this field. These new jobs are inside the education system (e.g. fab manager in the university) but also “outside” the system, in the third places (public libraries, co-working spaces), in the administration (chief digital officer) and in companies as lifelong training is turning into a big challenge. Above all, there are many professions that do not exist yet or that are currently in progress. In one word: we prepare our students to be the ones who prepare and act for the world to come.

Our alumni are currently working as education designer, editorial manager, project manager, consultant, entrepreneur, teacher or PhD student!

The International Master’s Degree Programme in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a two-year research-oriented programme concentrating on intelligent digital solutions to real world problems. During the past decades, Computer Science and Engineering has had a significant impact into our daily lives. The development continues and soon computers will not be used as separate devices anymore. Instead they will blend into our living environments and offer us rich sets of services through natural and intuitive user interfaces. The graduates from Computer Science and Engineering will play a key role in this development.

The two-year programme has three specialisation options:

• Artificial Intelligence

• Computer Engineering

Applied Computing focuses on the next generation of interactive systems that place humans at the focus of the technological development. Adopting a multidisciplinary real-world approach, students have to spend a substantial amount of time working in group projects to develop a variety of systems ranging from interactive online services to games and mobile applications, with a strong focus on innovation and design.

Artificial Intelligence focuses in various fields of AI, such as machine learning, machine vision, and data mining. This specialisation provides students with a solid theoretical understanding and practical skills on processing and analyzing digital data and the ability to create intelligent solutions to real world problems with modern AI techniques.

Computer Engineering focuses on both hardware and software aspects of computing with emphasis on embedded system development. In this specialisation, students also study signal processing and its applications, and work with projects on modern signal processors and embedded computers. The specialisation gives the students a good basis to work with Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

In addition to the core specialization options, students can take optional courses to widen their specialization expertise into:

• Embedded systems

• Ubiquitous computing

This Master’s programme is provided by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and students are strongly encouraged to work closely with research groups in the faculty that are international leaders in their fields. The Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) is renowned world-wide for its 35 years of expertise in computer vision research. The Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP) has created a unique research environment for Ubiquitous Computing including multitouch wall-sized displays, smartphone sensing middleware and sensor networks. Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) is a fusion of expertise from the fields of computer science and biology. During the studies the research groups provide students trainee and master’s thesis positions, with the possibility to continue as a doctoral student, and even as a post-doctoral researcher.

The programme will provide the graduates with sufficient skills to work in a wide variety of positions offered by research institutes and companies mainly operating in the field of information and communications technology (ICT). The graduates are most likely to be employed in research and development related positions, but also management positions and entrepreneurship fit into the profile.

The Computer Science Information Security Centre

The Computer Science Information Security Center (ISC) recognizes that no computer science graduate should be without information security knowledge. Toward this end, the Computer Science Department has introduced Information Security content such as computer and network security across the undergraduate and graduate curricula.

The curricula set forth by the ISC has been certified by the NSA to meet the National Training Standards for Information Systems Security Professionals (4011) and Systems Administrators (4013).

Our MSc Animal Behaviour is unusual in that it is offered within a Psychology department. This benefits you by providing a strong background in a broad cross-section of research methods used by researchers studying human and animal behaviour, a strong training in statistical methods and a multidisciplinary study environment. You will learn how to formulate and test relevant research questions and critically evaluate the research carried out by others in the field.

The programme will give you insights into the varied means of performing animal behaviour research in a wide array of locations with wild and (semi-)captive animals – in field, laboratory, zoo or other human managed settings. As part of the taught component you will be exposed to lectures and seminar discussions, research talks and discussions with speakers; boost and consolidate your knowledge and skills in statistical data analysis; participate in a one-week residential field course (during the Easter break); and engage in research skill training sessions. During the course you will continuously develop your abilities in critical analysis of the literature and of scientific evidence, project development, communication and scientific writing.

You will be part of the lively, internationally-recognised Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour (CRAB) and will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced researchers on a research apprenticeship which is a central component of the course. The apprenticeship is a research project that enables you to develop your research skills further and write up the research in the form of a journal article for potential publication. Apprenticeships can also be undertaken under the supervision of researchers at various institutions with whom we have developed long-term relationships.

On successful completion of the MSc you will have the skills to pursue a PhD, work as a researcher or pursue a career working in zoos, research centres, nature reserves, wildlife and other animal-related offices, education, scientific media or the expanding field of eco tourism.

Research Apprenticeship

A distinctive feature of all our taught Masters programmes is the Research Apprenticeship. About half of the MSc is spent on the apprenticeship, during which you will develop your research skills by working alongside experienced researchers or practitioners and write up your research in the form of a dissertation.

Many students undertake their apprenticeship with researchers in the Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour, both in the laboratories and outdoors around the campus, Devon and abroad. Every year the menu of choices varies depending on the interests of the researchers, the students and practicalities. In some cases students have worked with external research partners, in the UK or abroad. For example, previous students have carried out a wide range of research projects involving the following:

Topics: Social behaviour, animal welfare and enrichment, zoo research, animal cognition, navigation, sensory ecology, behavioural and evolutionary ecology, ecotoxicology.

Animals: Fish (guppies, sticklebacks, killifish), mammals (primates, squirrels, whales, donkeys, dogs, meerkats, coyotes), birds (pigeons, chickens, pheasants, magpies, flamingoes, woodland and sea birds), invertebrates (crabs, honeybees, bumblebees, desert ants, wood ants).

In this one-year MSc programme, you have the opportunity to learn about how trees, people and agriculture can be combined in sustainably managed farms, forests and landscapes. There is a long tradition of agroforestry practice in many parts of the world, but recently it has become a major focus in international development and is now at the forefront of innovation in natural resource management. Bangor is a world leader in agroforestry with a fantastic reputation for its research activities and our graduates are either already employed when they start the course and/or have a strong track record in finding employment within the sector. Students and academic staff are active collaborators with international organisations such as the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, Costa Rica (CATIE) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). You can expect to develop the skills required for a research and professional career from the comprehensive programme we offer.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide an integrated education in natural resource management, combining ecological and social dimensions of agricultural and forest sciences, focussed on application to real world systems where trees interact with agriculture. The programme is designed to develop both subject-specific knowledge and cognitive and key skills. The course has a world focus and the University has strong links with agroforestry organisations which means that many of our students have undertaken fieldwork in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, as well as in Wales/UK. Besides fantastic overseas opportunities, we also have a university farm (Henfaes Research Centre) located a short distance outside of Bangor where many students carry out experiments for their final projects.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Foresters and gives partial fulfilment of Professional Membership Entry.

We work in partnership with the World Agroforestry Centre.

Course Structure
The programme has two parts. Part Part 1: runs from September to May and consists of five taught modules and a study tour. The taught part of the course is based on lectures, seminars, practical sessions and directed study, allowing an opportunity to examine a broad range of topics in detail and develop personal skills and expertise. A range of different assessment methods are used including reports, presentations, practical write-ups and online and written exams. Part 1 must be completed successfully before proceeding to Part 2, the dissertation phase.

Part 2: June to September is set aside for production of a dissertation on a topic selected by the student in consultation with their academic supervisor. Dissertations can be in almost any aspect of agroforestry that interests you; they can have a temperate or tropical focus, and can include field work either locally in Wales, elsewhere in the UK, or overseas.

Part 1 Subjects:

Agroforestry Systems and Practice: This module explores agroforestry systems and practices worldwide and introduces the concepts behind them. Through a series of case studies, the module explores ecological and biophysical interactions in agroforestry systems, and considers the range of social, economic and ecosystem benefits they deliver, including ways in which we are trying to reduce the environmental impact of food production and overcome constraints to food security.

Silviculture: The purpose of the module is to develop students’ understanding of the silviculture of single trees and trees in complex systems. This module develops an understanding of the principles and practice of silviculture, the place of silviculture in the sustainable cultivation of trees, and the role it plays in delivering ecosystem services from trees, woodlands and forests. We explore the unique characteristics of forest soils and of soil physical, chemical and biological properties, how these influence site productivity and how these are influenced by land management.

Natural Resource Management: The purpose of this module is to give students a theoretical understanding of the systems approach to managing natural resources to provide various ecosystem services, as well as a practical grounding in the ways in which natural resource managers can draw on a variety of knowledge sources to inform themselves and others of the impacts of land management interventions.

Research Planning and Communication: This module seeks to develop students’ understanding of the role of science and the scientific process in formulating and addressing context relevant questions, and communicating scientific output to different audiences. During the course of the module, students will devise, conduct and write up a policy-relevant scientific study.

Natural Resource Development: The purpose of this module is to introduce the international development context to students and to give a practical grounding in project planning. During the module, students will develop a full project proposal in line with funding guidelines for an agroforestry based natural resource development intervention.

Study Tour: We round off the taught part of the course with a study tour which gives students the opportunity to see the practical application of natural resource management principles that are discussed in earlier parts of the programme. During visits to areas which are managed for a range of objectives, you will meet and discuss with different stakeholders and collect information relevant to a specific research topic.

Part 2:

Dissertation: Execution and written presentation of a suitable scientific project which is devised by the student and an individual academic supervisor and validated by the Programme Director. A suitable project entails a worthwhile scientific question, of direct relevance to the degree programme being undertaken, established within the context of current knowledge and concepts that allows the formulation and testing of one or more hypotheses. This normally involves up to 5 months full-time work, typically including: 2-3 months for data collection from the field, laboratory or computer; 1-2 months for data analysis; and 1-2 months for writing-up.
