Our Graduate Diploma in Dance Studies (GDDS) is an enriching and stimulating programme designed to support your artistic development. It is a flexible programme based on a professional development model, with in-depth training in core areas of dance practice combined with a range of options. You can select aspects of dance study to help you work towards your goals, within a vibrant and challenging environment that encourages independent learning alongside shared practice and collaboration.

You will develop your practice through in-depth training in core areas of study: contemporary dance technique, devising and performance, choreological practice and choreography. You will have further opportunities to broaden your experience and understanding of dance by selecting from a range of electives covering different aspects of dance, as well as practical applications of the art form. As part of a diverse community of students from a wide variety of backgrounds and training, you can tailor the programme to suit your needs, interests and experience, and work towards your individual learning, training or professional goals.

Achievement of the Diploma in Dance Studies requires you to pass 120 credits as detailed above. Each component you select will be assessed separately, some by coursework assessment, others by written or practical assignments.

As a condition of acceptance onto the Trinity Laban Diploma in Dance Studies, overseas students are required to register for the ATCL Performance Arts (Contemporary Dance) qualification accredited by Trinity College London (TCL). This will require you to go through a registration process at the commencement of the academic year, and an assessment day at the end of your programme. Entry for this additional qualification is also open to, but optional, for UK/EU students.


There are a range of possibilities, depending at what stage in their training / career people enter the programme. GDDS graduates work as independent artists, performers, choreographers and teachers. The programme may lead to further dance training or study at Masters level.

This programme provides you with a broad understanding of the theories and practices of dance movement therapy necessary for safe and effective clinical work, and enables you to practise as a dance movement therapist.

This programme is accredited by the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy.

Your learning will be underpinned by the principles and practices of psychodynamic psychotherapy within the social, political and multicultural context of mental health care and educational settings. Study is informed by contemporary dance practice, Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and somatic bodywork.

Through theoretical studies, movement observation studies, dance practice workshops, clinical work and experiential learning, you integrate cognitive understanding and practical experience with a developing awareness of self and other.

The nature of the therapeutic relationship is explored in depth through movement and dance and you have the opportunity to put your learning into practice through at least 90 days of supervised placements. This gives you the opportunity to relate your practical experience to your theoretical studies.

You'll be encouraged to develop your own dance/movement practice and to situate your work in relation to your development as a therapist, to contemporary dance and movement practice. You're required to be in personal therapy throughout the programme.

On graduation you are eligible to become a registered professional member of the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy (ADMP UK).

Modules & structure

The MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy programme is made up of 240 credits and provides you with a broad understanding of the theories and practices of Dance Movement Psychotherapy necessary for safe and effective clinical work as a Dance Movement Psychotherapist.

It aims to enhance your self-knowledge and interpersonal relationships and to promote your psychodynamic understanding of individuals, groups and society; working with questions of difference, equality and diversity.

Your learning is underpinned by the principles and practices of psychodynamic psychotherapy within the social, political and multicultural context of mental health care and educational settings, and informed by contemporary dance practice and Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). On successful completion of the MA you will be able to apply to the Association of Dance Movement Psychotherapists UK for registration.

The award of an MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy is consistent in its structure and content with the requirements of the Masters Framework for qualification in Health and Social Care, and is a Dance Movement Psychotherapy specific programme.

This MA gives you the opportunity to build on your previous educational studies through a challenging educational and practice experience. It combines applied theoretical concepts with practice placements, during which you'll gain knowledge and skills for practice. You'll progress through the Masters towards an award in stages.

If you exit at Year 1 or 2 you will not be eligible for registration with the ADMP UK as a Dance Movement Therapist; however you may be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma in Dance Movement: The Therapeutic Process.


This MA programme is aimed at graduates from dance and other related creative arts or from education, counselling, social and health based trainings and/or practice.

It is for anyone who is already working in a related field and recognises that dance movement psychotherapy can make a significant contribution to enhancing lives. It is also for experienced practitioners who may not have trained at first degree level but who have a sound working knowledge in therapeutic creative arts.

Stage 1: Postgraduate Certificate in Dance Movement

Three Modules (60 credits):
• Orientation to Dance Movement Psychotherapy (20 credits)
• The Moving Body in Dance Movement Psychotherapy (20 credits)
• The Moving Body: Observations and Interventions (20 credits)

The course is taught with a mixture of experientially based learning, seminars and lectures.

Theoretical content is delivered on Mondays from 9am – 6pm, with students attending a second day per week for their clinical placement at Dance Voice in the first year.

In the second year students continue to attend one day per week at Dance Voice and will research and set up their own off-site placements, which typically are two per week.

The third year has a ten week taught component, and then focuses on independent research and study towards completion of the MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy.

The course is underpinned by tutor contact throughout and has a supportive approach. Independent study is typically ten hours per week in year 1 and 3, increasing in year 3 for the research dissertation.


The course is assessed with a mix of practical and written assignments for theory, and placement reports from internal and external supervisors for practice. There are no formal written exams, but there are a number of assessed practical presentations in Years 1 and 2. Each module carries 20 credits, except the dissertation, which carries 40 credits.

You will undertake a range of taught modules and independent study which will focus on you developing an in-depth understanding of the symbiotic relationship between science and art within dance.

The University of Wolverhampton is the only UK institution that offers separate modules in applied physiology, biomechanics and psychology at this level. Mapdance is the University of Chichester’s touring performance company and offers dance artists, the chance to undertake a Masters degree or Diploma level in the UK’s leading Practice as Research department. It is an intensive year of training and provides performance opportunities to a variety of theatres, arts centres and educational settings.The programme enables students to develop their dance practice as a performer. Options to study as an Independent Researcher or Choreographer, individually or in collaboration with other artists, are also available. There are also opportunities to engage in leading research with interactive technologies.

Mapdance has worked with cutting edge choreographers including Shobana Jeyasingh, Charles Linehan, Liz Aggiss, Gregory Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre, South Africa), Ben Wright, Matthias Sperling, Ben Duke (Lost Dog) and Darren Ellis.

Performers studying for the Postgraduate Diploma do not present a dissertation but are able to develop skills to support their practice with the opportunity to select one optional module. Students undertaking the Pedagogical Approaches module take part in educational work on tour linked to the mapdance repertory.

The flexibility of the programme means that you can achieve your postgraduate diploma after successful completion of modules to the value of 120 credits, or you can continue your studies to attain 180 credits and include the Dissertation module to achieve the MA.

Our facilities

At Chichester, we teach in small groups and pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we have created for our students. The Dance courses are delivered on our Bishop Otter Campus where the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is the hub of your learning environment. It has two upper floors of library resources with dedicated areas for silent work or group study, while on the ground floor you will find the Support and Information Zone, Media Centre, Otter Gallery, Costa Coffee and a variety of IT resources. There are over 130 open access PC workstations, 45 Apple IMacs and ample printing and media facilities. A state-of-the-art wireless network offers fast internet as well as access to all our online resources. You will also have a dedicated subject librarian who will be available to help you access all the library resources you need for your course, both on the shelves and online. 

Our Dance facilities include four superb dance studios, a fully equipped 250-seat theatre and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Recent Dance graduates have achieved a wide range of successes since moving into areas of performance, teaching, administration, postgraduate study and research.

The Postgraduate Diploma will equip you for a range of careers in choreography, performing arts, dance development, arts administration, performance, teaching or dance research. You can also continue to further study at masters level.

Dancers from mapdance have gone on to work with many companies as performers or arts managers, including Lila Dance (Choreographers and Arts Council-funded touring company) Udifydance, Balletboyz, English National Ballet, South East Dance, Rambert Dance Company to name a few.

Links to employment and future careers are essential and you will be gaining valuable professional experience and practice as part of our mapdance touring dance company. You’ll be guided by the module tutors and our active careers service to identify and channel your knowledge, skills and talent.

Guest lecturers will introduce you to issues affecting dance employment, and your learning is supported by individual tutorials and group meetings to discuss your progress.

This is a low residency programme using on-line / distance learning, with the opportunity to visit Middlesex University's London campus. Dance at Winchester focuses on the academic study of dance, preparing you for a career in teaching, lecturing, research, choreography, dance dramaturgy or dance facilitation. It is also suitable if you are a professional interested in honing your analytical and critical skills, out of a passion for the subject or in order to change career direction. The programme provides you with a firm grounding in the critical theories and dramaturgical structures of musical theatre that are necessary for analysing, critiquing, choreographing or facilitating dance practice. You are encouraged to engage with academic literature, case studies and each other by reflecting on your own experiences.

The suite of Masters programmes in the Department of Performing Arts draws together students on courses in Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre and Dance. Choreomundus is an Erasmus Mundus programme that investigates dance and other movement systems (ritual practices, martial arts, games and physical theatre) as intangible cultural heritage. To apply, please visit the website.

It is offered by a consortium of four universities (in Norway, France, Hungary and the UK) recognised for their leadership in the development of innovative curricula for the analysis of dance. The Choreomundus programme will help you make sense of intangible heritage within the post-colonial culturally diverse world of the 21st century. The programme will help you develop an appreciation of dance that is comparative, cross-cultural, applied and embodied. 

The universities that participate in this programme are Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim (NTNU) as the coordinating institution Plaise Pascal University (UBP), Clermont-Ferrand, France, Scientific University of Szeged, Hungary (SZTE), University of Roehampton, London, UK (URL), in connection with their groundbreaking Masters in ethnochoreology/dance anthropology, led respectively by Professors Egil Bakka, Georgiana Wierre-Gore, László Felföldi, and Andrée Grau. 

The Department is home to the internationally-recognised Centre for Dance Research, which foregrounds the research of dance as cultural and artistic expression beyond, and including, theatre performance. Through seminars, forums and conferences involving staff and international invited guests, the centre supports a compelling research culture.

We also have excellent links with dance companies and creative organisations. In easy reach of London’s vibrant dance scene, the campus has superb studios and a state-of-the-art theatre for dance students.


In the first semester all students start in Norway for an induction and an intensive course. For the rest of the first academic year, they are divided between NTNU Trondheim and UBP Clermont-Ferrand, and then spend their third semester in Hungary, and the fourth and final semester at the University of Roehampton. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a joint Masters degree from all four universities.

This Research Master's programme in Media, Art and Performance Studies is an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research-based programme which offers an advanced training in academic research skills appropriate for today's highly dynamic and interdisciplinary field of media, visual arts and performance.

Cultural trnsformations

Contemporary media, art and performance increasingly play with and transcend disciplinary boundaries. Intermedial and performative practices both produce and critically investigate cultural transitions in today’s mediatized and performative culture. Such synergies invite to explore how emerging forms of media, art and performance – while historically and culturally embedded - interact with and relate to social and cultural transformations.

Emerging media, art and performance

As a student of this programme, you will be introduced to and specialise in new research areas and methodologies, necessary for investigating emerging media, performance and contemporary art forms within today's rapidly changing culture. In relation to this you will also reflect on the role of the Humanities in both academic and public debates.

A mediatized culture and society

Central concerns in this programme are, amongst others:

Comparative approach

We approach this broad field from a range of comparative and intermedial perspectives, focusing primarily on the dynamics of change and exchange between media, contemporary arts and performance within a culture and society in transition.

Research questions

In this programme you will reflect on questions such as how media have developed from the time of early cinema up to current new media art; how the definition of 'live' has changed alongside these mediatised cultural forms. How has the performative turn changed the ways we think about audiences? How do media technologies facilitate new methods of self-staging and social performance? What is the influence of media and technology on way we curate and educate in museums and archives and other cultural institutions.

In this age of selfies, datafication, (self-) staging and re-staging, and playful learning, you will examine how various media, art forms, and performance have been used for critical analysis, civic engagement, entertainment and educational purposes. You will do this by asking how digital technologies, dramaturgical and artistic strategies alter ways of dealing with knowledge production and distribution, and how these transitions have contributed to and also ask for new methods of research.

How does the ubiquity of media technology change our understanding of the world and our sense of self within it, as well as how we communicate and act?

After graduation

This programme will train you as a researcher within the field of Media, Contemporary Art and Performance Studies, to either prepare you for a PhD position, or for research-oriented positions in professional contexts of cultural institutions such as archives, museums, art institutions, theatres, for education, (non-)governmental organisations, or in creative industries.

Our Master's programme offers you the possibility to conduct independent and creative research on a linguistic or literary topic of your choice in a stimulating multilingual andurban environment. Your research activities will be supervised by an internationally renowned expert in his or her field.

The Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies contains two research centres, the Centre for Literature, Intermediality, and Culture (CLIC) and the Centre for Linguistics (CLIN).

CLIC offers an interdisciplinary forum for specialists in literature, theater, dance and film (PhD students, researchers, assistants and teaching staff). Under the umbrella of "the experiment" it groups research on texts and aesthetics which in a boundary-crossing manner explores the possibilities to represent and stage reality. The different artistic media (literature, theater, film, etc.) in this research are considered laboratories for a reflection on the relationship between reality and the imagination.

The Masters of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching) allows you to further your knowledge and expertise through research in your own practice. It is a modular programme delivered via distance learning, normally over two-three years. The programme offers high-quality dance teachers an opportunity to engage in:

•postgraduate research based on your own professional practice
•career progression which puts you at the forefront of dance teaching innovation.

Learning is flexible in that you study from home during hours which suit your employment and personal commitments.

Your student experience

The programme begins with a compulsory one-week induction seminar at RAD headquarters, London. Individual modules are delivered via distance learning through access to the RAD's virtual learning environment. Each module has a study guide which introduces you to key topics, concepts and readings and leads you through a series of study tasks in preparation for a final assessment. You are allocated a specialist tutor for each module who supports your studies through regular communication via email, telephone, Skype and online forums. Modules are studied across two semesters per academic year.

Research methods
This module introduces a range of education research models, paradigms and approaches for practice-based research and will equip you with an understanding of research design, data collection and ethics. It provides the foundation for research on all other modules on the programme, including your final research project.

Dance, education and culture
This module provides an opportunity to expand your knowledge and understanding of dance as a cultural practice, including the theatrical art form. The reading materials and tasks focus on developing critical thinking through study of key cultural theories and their application. The essay assignment allows you to draw on selected concepts and critical frameworks and to evaluate their potential application to your own professional practice.

Research project
This module comprises the design and delivery of an extended practice-based research assignment. The precise nature of the research will be determined by a number of factors, including the needs of your school/ work environment, the dance curriculum, and your specific knowledge, skills and research interests. You will have the option to attend a two-day seminar at the start of the module and will be assigned a supervisor to guide you through the research process. The module culminates in the submission of a 20,000 word dissertation.

Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma Awards

If you would like to study at Masters level, but are not yet ready or able to commit to the full Master of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching), you have the option to study the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma. With successful achievement of the required credits, you will be eligible to progress from the PG cert to the PG Dip or from the PG Dip to Masters.

The university works in partnership with schools and colleges to provide a high quality programme of support, ensuring a sound relationship between theory and practice. You will benefit from undertaking two placements in two schools or colleges, with the opportunity to visit additional schools or colleges as part of the peer observation programme.

We have excellent multimedia training materials, giving you the opportunity to develop your confidence and competence in the use of ICT. Our multimedia suites are regularly updated to keep up with technological advancements in classroom teaching provision.

Areas of study

There are four strands to this course: subject study/subject education, education studies, school placements and professional development.

Dance addresses the development of pupils' performance, choreographic and appreciation skills. The demands of examination syllabuses are studied in parallel with practical experience.

Course content is kept up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation, so you will be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.

The subject study/subject education strand builds upon your existing expertise in dance and provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of dance in the secondary school context. You will consider the learning and teaching strategies that are relevant to the specialist subject.

The subject education module is specifically related to teaching the specialist subject in school while the subject study module enables you to take your subject specialist studies to an increased depth. You can earn 20 masters-level credits through the assessment for the subject study module.

The education studies strand will give you a thorough understanding of the learning process itself, including an appreciation of individual differences. The study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching is through both school and university settings, allowing you to develop practical competences, supported by analytical skills. By the end of the course you will:

• refine your understanding of pedagogy, including an appreciation of current and emerging educational theories and debate
• understand how to use and adapt a range of teaching, learning, management and assessment strategies in order to meet the varying needs of learners
• understand how the progress and well-being of learners is affected by a range of influences and know how to take account of the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity.

Professional development is intrinsically linked to all key strands of the programme and is designed to enable you to evaluate critically and reflect upon your learning in order to make improvements. You will be expected to gather and justify evidence of your achievements on a regular basis and develop and implement improvement plans.

Students use an e-portfolio to record their achievements and this is reviewed throughout the course. An action plan is used to support professional development during placements and makes up a significant part of the improvement planning process.

Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of this course, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.

You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based activities, with your training shared between the university and the partner school.

Your school-based training will include observing teachers, working with individual pupils and groups of pupils, team teaching and independent teaching. Your training will also entail completing specific subject tasks and developing your knowledge of school policy and effective practices.

You will maintain a professional training portfolio and be supported to review your work critically and analytically as well as to set appropriately challenging targets. As well as gaining a PGCE, you will be assessed against the national Teachers’ Standards in order to be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

Career prospects are good; most graduates gain their first teaching posts in secondary schools as soon as they qualify.

Successful candidates are those who are able to demonstrate a genuine interest in Dance through personal performance and dance experience and through working with young people in a creative setting.

This new PGCE Secondary programme in Dance will also allow students to be able to access the performance programme in the Showroom and join the large and established community of dance students who are studying for their BA, MA and PhD’s in Dance.

The programme is full time over 38 weeks and attendance is demanding.

70% of the course is school experience, during which you will be required to teach a proportion of a full time teacher's timetable and attend meetings (including parents' evenings) in the same way as a practising teacher.

The university sessions run all day.

The course has been designed to meet the demands of today’s dance industry, where your research and critical dialogue as a dance artist sit at the heart of the professional learning experience.
The MA Dance Practices course reflects the changing nature of the dance industry. There is now much more emphasis on practice-based collaboration, and advances in technology, in particular, mean that artists need to be open to new approaches to dance.

You will carry out a piece of in-depth research and develop skills to work largely independently with support from a supervisor. The programme has strong links with collaborative arts, community and educational partnerships. You can choose to specialise within your own area of expertise, or diversify your research study into other areas of artistic practice.

The programme differs from many other Masters programmes by bringing together postgraduate student artists from a range of sectors in the dance industry to enhance educational progress. The mix of professionals, from the sector, ensures a dynamic learning environment. By sharing your professional experiences, you will learn from each other as well as your tutors.

You can study full or part time via discreet intense learning blocks (likely to take place in early September, December, April and June/July/August). This mode of delivery enables you to apply what you learn in the on-campus lectures to professional contexts. There are appropriate opportunities for distance learning, individual support mechanisms and online learning platforms, enabling you, as a student, to draw from your own working practices.
