Dance Science & Education with teaching pathway to registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS)
Many dance teachers work in school and community contexts, however, it is a legal requirement for any teacher teaching in the Scottish state school system to be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Being registered not only allows an individual to teach but it also provides assurances to employers, parents and children that teachers meet a national standard of teaching.
The MSc Dance Science and Education now has a teaching pathway to registration with the GTCS, which was accredited in June 2015. On successful completion of this degree students are recommended by the University to the GTCS for provisional registration. Upon completion of the required probationary period of teaching graduates from this degree will further register with the GTCS as a teacher with a subject specialism in dance. This is currently the only route to GTCS registration as a teacher for dance specialists qualified to teach learners aged 3-18 years in schools.
The programme is offered as a Master of Science (SCQF level 11) and can be completed over 15 months (full time) or 24 months (part time). It is not available as a Postgraduate diploma.

The MA Choreography and Professional Practices draws on expertise from a number of professionals within the dance industry and is delivered in close relationship with a national dance agency, South East Dance based close by, in Brighton.
The degree incorporates opportunities for engaging in Continuing Professional Development opportunities such as workshops, career planning, master classes and residencies alongside the development of your own choreographic skills.
The MA offers an introduction to research methods in the arts and to strategies for documenting live performance practice and promoting your work to wider audiences.
It provides opportunities to pursue live performance practices as a choreographer and to consider how your work is situated in relation to the wider field of professional contemporary dance practice.
It allows for you to develop your own artistic voice and to explore single discipline or interdisciplinary practice-based arts research projects involving choreography, performance, fine art, music, installation, and so forth – led by you and your interest in performance making.
The MA is designed to cater both for students who wish to develop their dance-making skills in order to further their careers as reflective practitioners, and as a foundation programme for those hoping to pursue practical and/or theoretical research at M.Phil or Ph.D level.
The flexibility of the programme means that you can exit after successful completion of modules to the value 120 credits with a postgraduate diploma at Level 7.
For the award of the MA you need to attain 180 credits at Level 7 including the Dissertation module.

As an MA student you will have access to the lively arts research culture at the University including: regular full programmes of research presentations given by staff, web-based learning, research students and visiting artists/researchers, performances by visiting artists/companies, theatre trips to performance events, arts research training events and national arts conferences.
Some of the optional modules enable you to work alongside students from other Masters programmes. Some of the course content will be delivered by staff from South East Dance both on campus and off campus at their base in Brighton and in off-site performance venues in Brighton, London and other regional venues.
Learning is assessed using various methods chosen as the most appropriate for demonstrating achievement of the learning outcomes for each module. All modules are assessed by means of programme work in the form of practical choreography presentations, essays, reports, presentations, learning journals, portfolios, online tasks and group working.
Students are expected to carry out an independent research project on a topic relevant to the field of choreography. For this module students are supported through seminar sessions and tutorials during the two semesters so that they can develop research skills which are essential for lifelong learning, career flexibility; and for professional practice as well as for personal and professional development. In addition, students have the option to become involved in a number of collaborative projects through which they can, as part of the degree, develop project management, time management and interpersonal team work skills.

This new PGCE Secondary programme in Dance will also allow students to be able to access the performance programme in the Showroom and join the large and established community of dance students who are studying for their BA, MA and PhD’s in Dance.

This programme prepares you for a career as a secondary school teacher. At the end of the year you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and will be ready for the next stage of your development as a Newly Qualified Teacher in school. Our students are highly successful in gaining teaching posts, many in our partner schools.

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete three 4,000 word assignments at FHEQ level 7 (Masters), and two blocks of School Experience.
The MA in Arts Management, Policy and Practice enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the history, theory and practice of arts management; to gain an insight into the range of professional opportunities in the creative and cultural sector; and to acquire direct experience of the many areas of arts management. The programme has a strong practical, hands-on element. At the same time it offers a solid theoretical grounding, exploring cultural policy in its historical context and encouraging critical engagement with the philosophical, political, social and economic imperatives informing contemporary practice. Opportunities exist in the public, private, and voluntary sectors; in theatres, opera houses, concert halls, arts centres, museums and galleries, and the media; with orchestras, theatre companies, dance companies, etc.; or with the Arts Council, British Council, Local Authority, Tourist Board and various funding bodies. There are four strands to this course: subject study/subject education, education studies, school placements and professional development.
Dance addresses the development of pupils' performance, choreographic and appreciation skills. The demands of examination syllabuses are studied in parallel with practical experience.
Course content is kept up to date with changes in local and national initiatives and legislation, so you will be confident that your working knowledge is based on current theory and practice.
The subject study/subject education strand builds upon your existing expertise in dance and provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of dance in the secondary school context. You will consider the learning and teaching strategies that are relevant to the specialist subject.
The subject education module is specifically related to teaching the specialist subject in school while the subject study module enables you to take your subject specialist studies to an increased depth. You can earn 20 masters-level credits through the assessment for the subject study module.
The education studies strand will give you a thorough understanding of the learning process itself, including an appreciation of individual differences. The study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching is through both school and university settings, allowing you to develop practical competency, supported by analytical skills. By the end of the course you will:
Professional development is intrinsically linked to all key strands of the programme and is designed to enable you to evaluate critically and reflect upon your learning in order to make improvements. You will be expected to gather and justify evidence of your achievements on a regular basis and develop and implement improvement plans.
Students use an e-portfolio to record their achievements and this is reviewed throughout the course. An action plan is used to support professional development during placements and makes up a significant part of the improvement planning process.
At the end of the course, the e-portfolio provides evidence that you have met the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.
Ofsted identify our approach to training in schools as a key strength of this course, with an excellent balance between university tuition and school-based training.
You will spend a minimum of 120 days on school-based activities, with your training shared between the university and the partner school.
Your school-based training will include observing teachers, working with individual pupils and groups of pupils, team teaching and independent teaching. Your training will also entail completing specific subject tasks and developing your knowledge of school policy and effective practices.
You will maintain a professional training portfolio and be supported to review your work critically and analytically as well as to set appropriately challenging targets. We will also develop an action plan with you to identify strengths, development needs and actions, so that your practice is continually developing.
School Direct is an alternative route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the University of Brighton is working with a number of schools to deliver this programme across a range of secondary subjects as well as in the primary phase.
To train as a teacher through the School Direct programme you need to apply directly to a school for a School Direct training place, with schools advertising their vacancies on the UCAS Teacher Training website. The University of Brighton supports School Direct through providing training and assessment opportunities at the request of participating schools.

Our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Secondary Education provides a high standard of training for those preparing to take up a teaching post in the secondary school sector. The course complies with the statutory guidance from the National College for Teaching and Leadership for Initial Teacher Training courses.
The aim of the dance course is to develop thoughtful teachers who can respond effectively to the learning needs of young people in school by providing a balanced dance and physical education programme. We also want to inspire a generation to become physically literate and active by providing well prepared, high quality dance experiences for all students. As a trainee you will learn how to teach dance to pupils in the 11-16 age range within the secondary age phase, with additional primary and post-16 enhancements. You will learn how to develop skills, knowledge and understanding for teaching dance through a combination of university-led and school-led training.
This course is designed to meet the NCTL Teaching Standards which assesses all trainees working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
This postgraduate qualification offers 60 Masters-level credits that can be used towards our Masters degrees in the field of education.
This Dance route sits within an exciting range of Secondary Education subjects we offer within the Institute of Education.
This is NOT an appropriate training course for applicants who wish to teach in Primary schools or Post Compulsory Education establishments.
Over the one year course, you will undertake learning at University and other educational settings. You will spend 120 days divided between at least two different school placements across the 11-16 age range within the Secondary age phase.
Your University tutor team is available to assist you throughout your training, supporting development of reflection. Every effort is made to ensure that high-quality school placements are provided to you, facilitating learning through observing, co-teaching and being observed by experienced teachers in the classroom.
All course modules provide examples of good practice in pedagogy which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style - you will be expected to actively participate in your own learning and development.
Teaching on the course comprises a variety of methodologies that will prepare you for life in the classroom including teacher-led discussions, pupil-led exploration, peer-group discovery, problem based learning, e-learning and the provision of individual targets.

The PGCE course takes place over 180 days, and 120 of those days are spent in a school. You will have one school attachment during the autumn term and another (in a different school) in the spring/summer terms.
One of our strengths is that we have a vast network of high quality partnership schools in which to place you for the extended school placements. We ensure that you receive high quality school-based training by selecting schools with highly trained mentors and a proven track record of excellent trainee outcomes. We will also take other factors into consideration when placing you, such as your geographical location and transportation, to provide you with the best possible experience in a convenient and suitable setting.
The University-led elements of the course take place at our Walsall Campus. Our PGCE starts in early September and ends in June, and it is an intensive academic and professional training course that effectively prepares you for your first teaching post and beyond.
The course comprises of a two day professional placement in mixed subject groups, two extended school placements in your subject specialism and two periods of University-based teaching – September to October and January to February. The programme also includes a short Primary school placement and additional opportunities for a range of enhancements to your course; for example, experience of teaching pupils with special educational needs, teaching pupils at post-16 level or teaching pupils for whom English is an additional language.
Successful completion of the PGCE Secondary Education course leads to recommendation to NCTL for qualified teacher status (QTS) and will then allow you to take up a teaching post within a secondary school.
In secondary schools you could be considered for a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR), which may comprise any of the following:
Later, you could progress to a senior leadership position such as a deputy or assistant head and head teacher - at which point you will have overall responsibility for the leadership and management of a school and the education its students receive.
Following successful completion of this award, you could also use your 60 Masters-level credits towards any of our Masters degrees in the field of education which can be continued within your NQT year.
If you’re working in the creative industries and want to progress to management level, or seeking a career in a artistic and cultural organisation, Cultural and Arts Management at Winchester is excellent preparation. The course develops your understanding of the relationship between the business process and the creative process, and examines wide-ranging topics such as implications of cultural policy and agendas of social inclusion and sustainability.
All our assignment topics are individually tailored to make sure they are a great match for your specific own areas of interest – from music to painting, dance to millinery, theatre to ceramics. You take part in weekly seminars, discussions, projects, visits, group and one-to-one tutorials, and directed and self-directed study, and develop your IT skills in areas such as website design and project management. Assessment is through coursework only, using a variety of formats similar to those used professionally in the industry. They include business plans, reports, audits and portfolios. Teaching takes place in the evenings, so you can study while working or completing an internship.
Some modules concentrate on the internal environment of artistic and cultural organisations (for example, examining issues of marketing, finance and strategy) while others focus on the external environment – the context in which artistic and cultural organisations operate, for example with reference to national policies and global trends. You finish with a professional project – an independent piece of work on a topic of your choice. this could involve organising an exhibition or a tour, starting a small company or implementing a marketing campaign.

We have strong links with the events community and are founders of the Events Hub, an informal and friendly community where practitioners come together to share experiences and ideas.
The placement option offers you an additional opportunity to develop your practical skills, either in the UK or abroad. We help you gain a placement by running employability workshops and have dedicated placement team to support you. Placement opportunities exist in organisations such as • the Ritz-Carlton Hotel • Martins Food Ltd • Gleneagles Hotel and Resort • Wanlin Dance School • the World Duty Free Group.
The course is based on the following principles

The events industry is an increasingly competitive marketplace. This makes a postgraduate qualification a valuable asset for employees as it demonstrates their ability and specialised skills and knowledge.
Opportunities for industry-qualified professionals are extensive in private, voluntary or government organisations. These range from large multinationals to small family businesses and public authorities.
There are excellent career opportunities in organisations including • conference and exhibition centres • hotels • events agencies • government agencies • associations and other third sector organisations • corporate businesses.
You can also continue with further study by completing a PhD or Doctorate in Business Administration.
