Summary

This course is designed for people who have prior dance experience and professional or volunteering experience with people in need, and would like to practise as a dance movement psychotherapist.

Dance movement psychotherapy is a relational process in which a client and therapist engage in an empathetic creative process using body movement and dance to assist the integration of emotional, cognitive, physical, social and spiritual aspects of self. We believe that focusing on the creative potential of individuals in a relationship creates a sound ethical basis for psychotherapeutic work.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as a dance movement psychotherapist. All graduating students are eligible to apply for registration with the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy (ADMP UK). Graduates often create their own positions; facilitating dance movement psychotherapy sessions within settings including: social services; special needs; schools; psychiatry; probationary and rehabilitation units; forensic psychiatry.

The course offers opportunities for you to explore and expand movement preferences, ways of interacting with others, belief systems, prejudices and values. Emphasis is placed on development of your own style as a dance movement psychotherapist. You also have the opportunity to perform and exhibit your ongoing work in a yearly Arts Therapies exhibition.

The MA in DMP benefits from cutting edge research conducted through the Centre for Arts Therapies Research (CATR) and this feeds directly into teaching. The programme ethos emphasises a critical consideration of different descriptions and explanations of bodies, human systems and therapeutic practices in different places and times. In the context of an individual student's experiences, beliefs, values and different 'cultures', our teaching actively promotes a participatory ethic, self-reflexive practices and the ability for critical reflection on: creative processes, intersubjectivity and the construction of social and power differentials, in learning and in psychotherapy.

Content

The uniquely interdisciplinary MA course in Dance Movement Psychotherapy integrates theoretical, experiential and clinical learning, preparing students to practice as dance movement psychotherapists. Cutting edge research cascades into teaching emphasising the social, biological and psychological construction of the moving body and meaning-making. Students are encouraged to develop a self-reflexive practice and the ability for critical reflection on creative processes.

Key areas of study include Contemporary DMP and psychotherapeutic theories, Feminist embodied reflexivity, clinical placement and supervision (for one-two days a week), dance movement improvisation skills and interventions, embodied performance practice, experiential anatomy for clinical practice, human development, movement and growth, Laban Movement Analysis and video observation.

Embodied practice and working with attention to the art of dance is placed at the centre of the programme. Drawing from Feminist, Psychoanalytical, Phenomenological and Systemic frameworks, the training emphasises the creative role of curiosity and a 'not knowing' position, a respect for difference, and appreciation of the effects that mutual influences have in all relationships.

Explore the place of dance in society from the perspectives of those involved as dancers, dance makers, teachers and audience members. By studying these perspectives, you will learn how different people around the world understand dance and how dance influences their value systems.

MA Dance Anthropology investigates dance from a non-Eurocentric perspective, placing the practices and values of the dancers into sociocultural and comparative understanding. At the heart of the programme is a focus upon ethnographic perspectives in dance to gain firsthand experience of different cultural approaches to dance practice. You will interpret your findings from the field in light of contemporary debates in dance anthropology.

The course is of particular interest to those who wish to study non-Western, folk, social or ritual dance practices, but the approach can be applied to ballet or Western theatre dance, too. This course provides a way to contextualise dance practice and deepen your understanding of dance and specific practices that helps define our humanity.

The Department is home to the internationally-recognised Centre for Dance Research, which foregrounds the research of dance as cultural and artistic expression as theatre performance and beyond. Through seminars, forums and conferences involving staff and international invited guests, the centre supports a compelling research culture.

The learning and teaching methods on the MA Dance Anthropology programme are designed to provide a range of opportunities for students to be introduced to new ideas and topics, to enhance understanding and to hone critical thinking and research skills.

You will take the compulsory research methods module Ways of Knowing and one compulsory programme core module. There is flexibility built into the programme for you to take modules that suit your interests.

In Ways of Knowing, a module shared with students of all dance postgraduate taught programmes, you will be introduced to research methods, including ethnography, dance analysis and practice-as-research.

In Anthropology of Dance, you will be introduced to the multifaceted history of the anthropology of dance so that you experience what ethnographic fieldwork is all about.

Assessment

Achievement of the Diploma in Dance Studies requires you to pass 120 credits as detailed above. Each component you select will be assessed separately, some by coursework assessment, others by written or practical assignments.

As a condition of acceptance onto the Trinity Laban Diploma in Dance Studies, overseas students are required to register for the ATCL Performance Arts (Contemporary Dance) qualification accredited by Trinity College London (TCL). This will require you to go through a registration process at the commencement of the academic year, and an assessment day at the end of your programme. Entry for this additional qualification is also open to, but optional, for UK/EU students.

Careers

There are a range of possibilities, depending at what stage in their training / career people enter the programme. GDDS graduates work as independent artists, performers, choreographers and teachers. The programme may lead to further dance training or study at Masters level.

Trinity Laban is the only institution where intensive, conservatoire-level art form training sits alongside applied study in community dance. The programme has four key strands:

• Artistic development. Progress your dance skills and artistic practice in a world-class conservatoire with first-class teachers and facilities

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

Our programmes explore interdisciplinary elements of dance science, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning and somatics. They explore the scientific issues underlying dance performance, technical training, and dancer health and injury prevention, looking at ways to optimise the body's performance, improve training techniques and enhance performer potential. The programmes examine the qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice, introducing elements from a range of scientific disciplines and applying them to a dance context.

Year Two (MFA Only)

The second year of MFA Dance Science consists of the Extended Project module, and is characterised by self-directed research, experimentation, and reflection in the creation of a substantial and thoroughly researched piece of work. The MFA programme may only be taken full-time.

Career progression

Graduate destinations are testament to the integrity and quality of the Dance Science programmes. Year on year, graduates are successful at obtaining employment within the field as researchers, lecturers, consultants and dance science advocates, with several graduates now leading similar postgraduate programmes at other HE institutions.

This programme provides you with a broad understanding of the theories and practices of dance movement therapy necessary for safe and effective clinical work, and enables you to practise as a dance movement therapist.

This programme is accredited by the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy.

Your learning will be underpinned by the principles and practices of psychodynamic psychotherapy within the social, political and multicultural context of mental health care and educational settings. Study is informed by contemporary dance practice, Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and somatic bodywork.

Through theoretical studies, movement observation studies, dance practice workshops, clinical work and experiential learning, you integrate cognitive understanding and practical experience with a developing awareness of self and other.

The nature of the therapeutic relationship is explored in depth through movement and dance and you have the opportunity to put your learning into practice through at least 90 days of supervised placements. This gives you the opportunity to relate your practical experience to your theoretical studies.

You'll be encouraged to develop your own dance/movement practice and to situate your work in relation to your development as a therapist, to contemporary dance and movement practice. You're required to be in personal therapy throughout the programme.

On graduation you are eligible to become a registered professional member of the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy (ADMP UK).

The MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy programme is made up of 240 credits and provides you with a broad understanding of the theories and practices of Dance Movement Psychotherapy necessary for safe and effective clinical work as a Dance Movement Psychotherapist.

It aims to enhance your self-knowledge and interpersonal relationships and to promote your psychodynamic understanding of individuals, groups and society; working with questions of difference, equality and diversity.

Your learning is underpinned by the principles and practices of psychodynamic psychotherapy within the social, political and multicultural context of mental health care and educational settings, and informed by contemporary dance practice and Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). On successful completion of the MA you will be able to apply to the Association of Dance Movement Psychotherapists UK for registration.

The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full-time) or two year (part-time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full-time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work. MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame.

The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon prior experience and future aspirations.

Purpose

Dance Professional Practice is for experienced professionals in the fields of dance, performing arts or humanities, such as dancers, choreographers, academics, teachers and somatic practitioners.

Format

Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Career progression

All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Some graduates go on to work freelance, creating and performing their own work. Some graduates go on to become dance industry professionals, taking roles within arts management, and others go on to further study.

There is a range of summative assessments used on the course. Written assessments include writing lab reports and journal articles, assessing your research design, analytical and written communication skills. The MA Dance Masters by Research enables students to develop their own research interests and, supported by tutors design a programme of dance research that addresses specific areas of interest, as an example, projects might explore areas such as; Dance and Postmodernism, Community Dance Practice, Dance in Education, Popular Dance, Site-Specific Dance Practices, Dance and technology, Dance Film, Dance and Interdisciplinary Arts Practices, Dance History, Dance and Politics.

Guest lecturers on the MA include scholars, practitioners and curators all working in innovative areas of dance research.

Our facilities

Our dance facilities include four superb dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre and a 110-seat studio theatre. In addition, there is a newly refurbished large gymnasium space together with two new sprung-floor spaces in the new academic building. Our students will use the facilities within our dance technical team to enhance their understanding of scenography, sound and cameras, and the editing suites to support their choreography and creative practice situated in the Learning and Information Zone of the library. 

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At the Bishop Otter campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support. We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. Independent Research Project module:

Your research skills will be facilitated through the formulation and realisation of a self-directed research project in broadly based dance practices, which underpin the MA programme. You will be expected to contextualise your work in the light of contemporary developments in dance research.

Dissertation module:

The Dissertation emphasises independent research where you select an area of investigation with the advice of tutors. This may arise from earlier modules studied on the degree. The research may focus on performance practice, professional practice (i.e. teaching and community dance practices) applied critical, historical or epistemological issues.

Optional modules

In addition to the two core modules, students are required to select two optional modules, these normally include options such as; Artist as Producer, Pedagogical Skills, Body in Site, Dance Writing and Criticism, Performing Politics.

Assessment for this programme employs various methods chosen as the most appropriate for demonstrating achievement of the learning outcomes for each module. Transitions Dance Company has gained an international reputation for the technical excellence of its dancers and the originality of the work it performs. This programme will give you the opportunity to work with outstanding international choreographers, culminating in an international tour. In the past, choreographers have included Rui Horta, Liz Aggis, Della Davidson, Yolande Snaith, Lea Anderson, Mark Murphy, Jamie Watton, Jasmin Vardimon and Jan De Schynkel.

As a member of Transitions Dance Company, you will work within a professional company environment, taking daily advanced level classes in both contemporary dance and classical ballet. These will be supported by classes in fitness and somatic techniques. You will work with professional performers and dance educators, rehearse repertory pieces, and actively engage with professional choreographers in the creation of new works. The company tours nationally and internationally, giving you a professional performance experience in a diverse and challenging repertory.

This challenging experience will help you grow into a performer who will contribute effectively and creatively to the profession, not only as a practitioner but as an articulate advocate for performance and performance practice.
