This MSc Software Engineering has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and rigour associated with the internationally recognised discipline of software engineering as defined by amongst others, the IEEE as: the systematic design and development of software products and the management of the software process.

The course is designed to concentrate on the core software engineering skills of a methodical, rigorous quality driven, managed approach to software development: whether it is through a practical understanding of Agile Software Development, to a certifiable standard; or working with the industry leading SAP software to engineer large scale system design or integration. Throughout the award the emphasis is on real-world skills blended with research driven teaching.

The Doctor in Education is a taught programme that comprises of eight structured modules and a substantial research thesis component. The D.Ed. is aimed at educational and related professionals who wish to study at a doctoral level. The intention is to prepare professionals to meet the challenge of working in a changing educational landscape at various levels (classroom based, management and leadership, policy making) and across different sectors. The programme will enable students to develop firstly their critical understanding of a range of contemporary issues and secondly, their capabilities in undertaking research. More specifically the D.Ed. aims to

Enhance and deepen professional knowledge and understanding of domain specific educational issues;
Develop expertise in and a critical understanding of, the nature, design and undertaking of empirical and nonempirical research;
Produce an original study that demonstrates the ability to conceptualise, design and undertake educational research;
Enable students to work autonomously as well as collaboratively in professional or equivalent environments and;
Make an original contribution to knowledge.
The majority of modules will be presented during the first three years of the programme - three of which are devoted to critically exploring a range of cognate contemporary issues in education from a multidisciplinary perspective within Irish, European and global contexts. A further three modules are dedicated to research methodology, with an additional two advanced modules offered in the fourth year of the programme. Assessment for six of the eight modules is through individual written assignments of between 5,000-5,500 words each. The thesis (which will not be more than 80,000 words in length), will act as the focal point of the programme and can be seen as a development of a student’s critical understanding of the taught modules and an opportunity to explore in substantial depth an area of their own practice. Teaching will mainly be seminar based and will usually take place at weekends and early evenings.

Entry to the programme will be restricted to students who have already completed or are about to complete a masters level qualification. Serious and equal consideration will be given to those applicants who may not hold a master level qualification, but nonetheless demonstrate through other means the potential to undertake doctoral level study. This course in Periodontology focuses on the management of periodontal conditions and the planning and execution of oral Implant therapy. The course includes didactic and clinical components and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. Students will be instructed in clinical periodontics and Implant Dentistry with emphasis on the scientific basis for treatment. The course has been developed with the intent that it should be recognised for speciality training by the Dental Council of Ireland under the auspices of the relevant advisory committee of the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry. Students will undertake a research project leading to a thesis. The course leads to the award of Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.Ch.Dent). Publication of clinical and research work is encouraged. The course is currently accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology.

This course has been designed to provide those who work in the broad area of the public and human service professions an opportunity to study part-time for a doctorate in one of three fields of professional activity – education, law, or social sciences.

Within the context of research, students will be expected to develop their understanding of particular subjects pertinent to their own research projects as an integral element of the enquiry process rather than being taught particular subjects within the course. Students are expected to gain further knowledge of subjects pertinent to their research through guided reading and discussion.

What will I study?

Students will undertake the following modules comprising six stages of their research project for the award of a professional doctorate in their chosen field. There are no optional modules.

Module one: Introduction: Research questions, aims and initial review of the literature (20 credits at D level).
Module two: Identity and Epistemology: Towards an understanding of literatures and conceptual frameworks (100 credits at D level).
Module three: Designing and using mixed methods in research concerning one of the three areas of professional activity (education, law and social professions) (60 credits at D level).
Module four: Designing and using mixed methods to complement the research in the preceding module concerning one of the three areas of professional activity (education, law and social professions) (60 credits at D level).
Module five: Thesis: Critical Reflection and Reflexivity (120 credits at D level).

Students who successfully complete the first four modules and who wish to terminate their studies will normally be eligible for an MPhil award. The final module, comprising a thesis and critical reflections on reflexive changes in knowledge derived from the student’s own study will be examined by viva voce examination.

The professional doctorate in Education involves students in two formal elements of activity: workshops and supervision of their own research projects.

Workshops

You will attend three to four two-day workshops, in Nottingham (Clifton campus and City site), in each of the first three years of your study. These are co-taught with the Legal Practice and Social Practice courses, and deal with topics that are generically relevant to research at doctorate level. Each workshop or group of workshops is linked to a specific stage in the project.

How will I be assessed?

Six formal documents that are presented as logical stages of the whole research project. Discussions concerning the development of research and group presentations with individual evaluation of the group.

We use diagnostic and formative feedback to support students in their ability to recognise strengths and weaknesses in their own research, and to negotiate targets for developing their study. All summative assessment is used to establish the level of achievement at the end of each module.

To obtain a doctorate in Education (Ed. D.) students must pass each stage of the course (360 credits at D level). The research is concluded with a viva voce examination based on their thesis and critical reflections and reflexivity regarding changes in knowledge and/or methodology and/or the self, mediated by the process of research.

To obtain an M.Phil. students must pass all four modules normally presented in the first two years of the course (240 credits at D level).

The Paediatric Dentistry Training Programme prepares the student both didactically and clinically to manage the child patient (0-16 years) at specialist level in a variety of settings (clinic, hospital, private practice). Clinical experience is provided under consultant supervision in the Dublin Dental University Hospital and in two Paediatric Hospitals. The volume and variety of patients includes healthy children, children with traumatic injuries, children with challenging behaviour, medically compromised children, children with dental anomalies/ syndromes etc. Treatment is provided under local anaesthesia, relative analgesia or general anaesthesia. Interdisciplinary care is co-ordinated with the other specialty programmes. The programme has six modules. Prosthodontics: Course Director Professor Brian O'Connell

This programme prepares the student for the clinical practice of prosthodontics at specialist level and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. Students will thoroughly explore the prosthodontic literature and become competent in the clinical/laboratory aspects of fixed and removable prosthodontics, including dental implantology. Students will learn how to diagnose, plan and execute high quality prosthodontic treatment for a range of patients. They will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art materials and equipment, including CAD-CAM restorations, computer-aided implant placement and fully adjustable articulators. The course explores the use of high strength ceramics and high-aesthetic situations. The Prosthodontic programme works closely with periodontics, especially in treatment planning for implant patients. In addition, students attend multidisciplinary clinics for the treatment of dental trauma, developmental disorders (including hypodontia) and cancer surgery defects.

Taught classes as well as counselling skills training, supervision and reflective practice modules emphasises the application of current psychological knowledge informed by empirical research in the work of the counselling psychologist. The students are facilitated to be aware of current research findings and to incorporate them into their clinical practice. In the first year the course offers academic and practical skills training in counselling psychology and related research. After the first few weeks of concentrated, full time coursework and personal development work, 2 full days per week are spent on placement and 2-3 days in classes. The D.Couns.Psych. offers a wide range of course approved placement options in community, health, mental health, education and private practice settings, as well as welcoming new student recommended sites, particularly for those students residing outside the greater Dublin area. At least 3 different placements are required during the 3 years of the course. The second year involves further training in counselling theories and practice, and students conduct a research dissertation related to counselling psychology, initiated during the summer before entering second year.

Personal development work, including individual therapy, is required throughout the 3 years. The third year includes small group supervision, reflective practice, and advanced counselling and psychotherapy theory and its application. However, the main focus will be on research. A research project resulting in the doctoral dissertation is carried throughout the three years. Courses are taught and supervision provided by both core staff and other practitioners from varied theoretical orientations. Humanistic theory underlies the course. Psychodynamic and systemic perspectives are also emphasised, and training in cognitive behavioural approaches is provided. Practical placements continue through the summer and always follow the placement site's calendar, not that of College. Guidelines for all aspects of the course are provided. All components of the course must be passed i.e., practical, academic; research, and personal development, as well as members of the Court of Examiners recommending the student as suitable to receiving the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology degree.

Graduates of this course are skilled to conduct mental health assessments and therapy with individuals, couples and groups across the lifespan. Typically, they start to specialise during their studies and further develop their skills after the course. They are employed by Health Service Executive, e.g. the National Counselling Service, Refugee and Asylum Seekers Service, Autism Services; Voluntary agencies, e.g. St. John of God's Services, Brothers of Charity Services, National Association for the Deaf; third level student counselling services; private practice; research settings; and multiple other locations.

MFD or equivalent is a requirement for entry on this course. Experience in a hospital setting and in oral surgery is advisable. Publications in peer review journals are an advantage. The emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of Oral Surgery (dentoalveolar surgery, implants, intra-oral soft tissue surgery and bone grafting). There are strong links with Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and other dental specialties, especially Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Special Needs Dentistry. There is a very strong component of Conscious Dental Sedation and students undertake the ACLS Course. Oral Surgery is a recognised Dental Speciality in Ireland. There are strict criteria for entry on the Oral Surgery Specialist Register in Ireland and advice on this is available on the Dental Council website.

Within the three years, the course provides an intensive and systematic programme of training, equipping each student to meet the challenges facing clinical psychology and to make a unique contribution to the Irish Health Services. The course is structured so that the academic teaching typically takes place in term time for one and a half days per week. In addition, each placement is preceded by a teaching block of approximately four weeks duration. Students complete six clinical placements during the course, each of approximately five months duration, providing knowledge, skills and experience to work with as wide a range of clients as possible. Research training is continuous across the programme.

Course requirements include continuous clinical assessment, examinations and a research portfolio combining reports of clinical activity, small and large scale research projects and demonstrating research competency across a range of methodologies. Progress on the course is assessed by an end-of-year review which each student must pass. Research interests of staff include attachment theory, developmental psychopathology, health psychology, research methods, forensic psychology, risk perception, quality of life perception and applied behaviour analysis. cStudents of the course are employed by an approved health care provider and graduates are required to complete an additional three-year contract of employment with their sponsoring service provider.

Learning, teaching & assessment

You will take part in interactive seminars, discussion and simulation exercises, as well as undertaking group project work. There are also opportunities for individual research and guided study. MA students are a fundamental part of the intellectual life of the Politics and International Relations study group. All students on MA programmes take part in the regular series of guest lectures and research seminars on issues of contemporary political relevance as well as taking part in the conferences and events organised and hosted by the Aston Centre for Europe and by the study group. All students have the opportunity to take part in a week long study trip to visit the EU institutions and related organisation in Brussels.

All students are allocated a personal tutor at the start of their studies; this member of academic staff can offer individual study advice and guidance and is there to help support your studies.

Assessments on the MA programme take a wide variety of forms, ranging from essays and examinations through to policy reports, briefings and campaign portfolios.

Career prospects

All of our MA Programmes equip students with the knowledge and analytical and transferable skills to pursue further postgraduate research or a successful career in the public and private sector. The careers pursued by our students vary greatly, but typical careers include:
