Developed in conjunction with Deloitte UK, our Cyber Security MSc provides you with knowledge of the very latest cyber security principles, practices, tools and techniques. The programme is provisionally certified by GCHQ, taught by a team of specialist staff in purpose-built cyber security computer laboratories. The involvement of the Industrial Advisory Group (Airbus, BT, Deloitte UK and Rolls-Royce) in designing the course and supporting its delivery and development ensures the teaching remains current and supportive of the real challenges cyber security specialists face in the rapidly changing cyber domain. You will gain a holistic perspective of cyber security, including the underpinning technology of the cyber domain and the role of linguistics, psychology and sociology in dealing with new cyber challenges. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. A strong emphasis is given to real world problems. Assessment is by a combination of coursework, projects and laboratory-based assessments.

The time allocated to study is around 30 hours per week, carried out in block teaching.
The course teams within the Cyber Security Centre have unrivalled expertise in cyber security. The team includes former Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) of large telecommunications companies, internet banks and cloud service providers, an ex vice president of one of the largest cyber security companies in the world, information assurance specialists with extensive experience working in various UK defence organisations, leading digital forensics experts and respected government advisors. Several of the team are regular media commentators on forensics and security. Professional input throughout the course will come from Deloitte and their cyber security professionals.
The Cyber Security Laboratories are among the best equipped facilities of this type in the UK. Developed in consultation with leaders in the industry, they are designed to meet the highest forensics and security standards.
The laboratories contain 65 high-spec, specially customised PCs configured with multiple operating systems, virtualisation and removable hard drives, as well as specialised servers, wired and wireless networking equipment and a wide variety of other hardware and software components.
The laboratories are also the base for our Cyber Security Centre (CSC), a multidisciplinary group of academics and industry experts who focus on a wide variety of cyber security and digital forensics issues. Their mission is to provide the full benefits to all of a safe, secure and resilient cyberspace.

This programme has been carefully developed for students who are interested in gaining advanced knowledge of psychological theory as this relates to social and political issues and the potential for such knowledge to generate progressive social change. The degree programme will equip you to engage critically and analytically with these issues and help you to develop novel ways of thinking about yourself, those around you and society at large. The theoretical and applied nature of this programme will offer you the opportunity to study how psychology helps interpret some of the most pressing social and political issues facing human society in
the 21stCentury and how it can contribute to tackling some of them.
In addition to your taught components, you will have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation project on a topic of your choice under the direct supervision of a member of staff. You will be able to use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches.
A further unique feature of this degree programme is that it involves you in the design and implementation of an Action Research Projectthat is aimed at bringing a tangible, positive change on or off campus in collaboration with your fellow students and under the supervision of your Module Leader.

The course is of one year duration for full time and two years for part-time.

Unlike other courses which focus on offender assessment and rehabilitation, this new course will examine the theoretical and investigative aspects of forensic psychology, tracking the criminal justice process from the crime scene to the court room. It is an exceptionally hands-on, practical course, using our unique on-campus Crime Scene Training Centre together with Psychology Testing Suites with the latest eye-tracking and face-processing equipment.
As well as the underlying theories regarding the psychology of investigations and considering areas such as how face processing can assist identification of individuals, you will explore different offence types - sexual offending, murder and violent crime, group offending (including terrorism, hooliganism and rioting), and different forms of cyber-crime (e.g. hacktivism and on-line sexual abuse).
You’ll be expected to investigate and scrutinise violent mocked-up crime scenes to provide written and verbal evidence, learning how to present expert witness testimony in a mock court.
You will evaluate victims, witnesses, suspects and offenders, environment, geography and time, working with practitioners who create fieldwork, case studies and exercises based on their real experiences.
Guest speakers sharing their knowledge will be an integral feature of the course, as will Terri Cole, the course leader's own experiences as a Behavioural Investigative Adviser and Serious Crime Analyst. Terri worked for a number of years with police forces providing offender profiling, crime scene assessment and offence linkage advice in relation to serious sexual offences and murder. She brings her expertise and experience together to focus on crime scene behaviour and how psychology can assist investigations on this new course.
Our MSc Cyberpsychology degree will provide you with the opportunity to develop the relevant academic and professional skills to commence a successful career in cyberpsychology, the psychological study of the Internet and digital technologies.
The course is designed for both psychology graduates and graduates of other related disciplines, for example media or IT. It may be of interest if you are seeking to pursue a career in cyberpsychology, either in any organisation that uses any form of cyberpsychology (i.e. has a web-presence) or in research or academia.
Students will gain invaluable first-hand practical experience through completion of eight weeks of work-based learning as a cyberpsychologist in a cyber-industry or other professional workplace. You will also benefit from careers advice and mentoring throughout the course.
This degree is available as both a full-time and a part-time option.

You’ll develop your knowledge of cyberpsychology theory and practice, and explore the ethical, cultural, political and legal issues arising in cyberpsychological practice and research. You'll be assigned a personal tutor who will provide pastoral and academic support throughout your studies. A tutorial group will be held on a bi-weekly basis, where you'll be given the opportunity to reflect on practice and experiences on the course, and to provide a place for interaction and exchange with your fellow students.
The eight-week work-based learning opportunity within the Applied Psychology of Digital Technologies module will provide you with invaluable experience working as a cyberpsychologist in a cyber-industry or other professional workplace. You’ll gain first-hand experience engaging with cyberactivities and will be able to apply relevant research and theory to your experiences. Examples of the type of company where you might work include: the gaming industry, online dating/social networking companies, a cybersecurity/filtering software company, academia, healthcare settings, research and education.

The Master of Security and Crime Science is the first of its kind in New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, lead by the New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science (NZISCS). The Institute is the primary research partner for the New Zealand Police, and a partner at the Evidence Based Policing Centre in Wellington. Papers and research topics will be delivered by world-leading researchers in psychology, statistics, artificial intelligence including machine learning, cyber security, political science, economics, management, law, education, Māori and indigenous development, and demographic research.
In collaboration with the New Zealand Police, students and researchers investigated drug abuse intervention, developed software to help police monitor offenders on bail, invented new methods to research burglary offences, researched sex abuse attitudes amongst school age children, and optimised traffic patrolling.
