This degree is designed for graduates wishing to start, or further develop, careers in marketing. It explores the principles, theoretical concepts and practice of marketing within the context of business and management and will focus on developing academic and applied skills in Marketing including advertising, brand management and loyalty, customer service, public relations and market research.

The programme will also develop students’ knowledge and skills across a broader range of business and management subjects, including organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate and develop students’ ability to take a strategic overview of business and organisational issues.

An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training in the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in Marketing both the public and private sectors. We look at marketing at local, national and global levels developing skills in strategic analysis, problem-solving and decision making.

The programme will prepare students for a career in marketing or in business and management. Students may choose to undertake a dissertation in a business or marketing topic. The Bangor Business School has a Chartered Institute of Marketing student chapter which enables our students to become involved in real life issues and enjoy hands-on experience of Marketing.

Compulsory modules:

Research Methods
This module equips students with knowledge of intermediate and advanced research methods, which they will encounter in other modules and in their dissertations. The module also provides a basis in research methodology for those who may eventually wish to pursue research degrees.

Marketing Strategy
This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.

Management and Organisational Behaviour
This module provides an integrated analysis of management as an academic discipline, drawing on the work of classical and contemporary writers in the field, and as a practical strategic activity in a dynamic environment of continual change.

Corporate Strategy
This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

Human Resource Management
This module develops a critical awareness of the key human resource management issues that arise within organisations. You will examine the theory and practice of human resource management in a variety of organisational settings, including an international dimension.

Marketing Communications
This module will examine the processes by which integrated marketing communications (IMC) programs are planned, developed and executed as well as the influencing factors. Individual communication vehicles included in an Integrated Marketing Communications plan are also explored.

Relationship Marketing
This module builds on the fundamental concepts examined in the Marketing Strategy module by exploring Relationship Marketing theory and practice in a range of global environments and business contexts. Theoretical approaches, integrated with relationship marketing models and analytical tools will be used to develop managerial understanding and competence.

Management Research
This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

Finance for Managers
This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

What will I study?

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all our ‘Business with’ Masters pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis, developing your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of the theory and practice of international business. In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Marketing Management.

In the second semester you will build an understanding of the role of relationship marketing, and by doing so, recognise the importance of customer retention and the internal customer. You will also learn about the marketing processes within the context of a globalised world, with an understanding of the business implications. Throughout the course, you can develop an appreciation of the varying approaches to marketing for organisations working within a dynamic global environment and the effect these challenges place upon marketing planning in an international context.

You will also undertake a dissertation in a marketing context, supported by an academic supervisor with relevant expertise from this subject area.

There is also an internship opportunity for an additional fee of £595, payable to our internship provider. Alternatively, if you would like to include a work placement during your programme, this is included in our MSc Business with Marketing Management with Advanced Practice. The work placement may be paid or unpaid.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is taught using a range of methods, including: lectures, seminars, and workshops, where you will develop your understanding of today’s global businesses.

Assessments for this course are based on a mix of assignments, presentations and group work.

Careers and further study

Graduates on the programme have joined a wide range of businesses, including graduate training schemes. A significant number of graduates have gone back to work for a family business or even started up their own businesses.

Organisations and People: This module examines key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM). Global Financial Markets: This module provides an overview of financial markets and instruments in a global context, taking account of insights from portfolio theory concerning the relationship between risk and return, the diversification of risk, and the pricing of assets.

Portfolio Management: This module evaluates the development of investment strategies for bonds and equities, which are designed to achieve optimal risk-return outcomes. The module builds on the foundations provided in ‘Global Financial Markets’. Emphasis is placed on strategic and tactical asset allocation, and on the measurement and evaluation of the performance of a portfolio of investments.

International Financial Management: In this module the financial management of multinational companies and the influence of macroeconomic, fiscal, currency and political environments on business and financial decision making are examined in an international and global context.

International Strategic Management+: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

Marketing Financial Services+ : This module surveys the tools of modern financial services marketing, focussing on the key methods of financial services marketing in the acquisition of customers and sale and distribution of financial services. The module progresses considering consumer behaviour, the changing customer demands, consumer heuristics and biases and ways in which financial services marketing has succeeded and failed.

Islamic Finance: This module provides an insight into topical issues relating to Islamic financial instruments and related risk management issues. The first part of the module examines issues relating to financial contracting, instruments and various intermediation issues. The second part focuses on the role of the capital market in providing Islamic financing, and highlights financial engineering and risk management features of this type of business.

Financial Modelling: This module develops a combined theoretical and practical approach to mathematical modelling for specialists in finance. The module emphasises numerical methods and other analytic approaches to financial modelling.

Financial Institutions Strategic Management: This module examines the main theoretical and practical issues concerning banking business. You will develop a critical awareness of the theory of the banking firm, the motives for international banking, and regulatory and structural issues impacting on bank behaviour.

Financial Crises and Bank Regulation: This module examines why banks and financial markets are inherently vulnerable to crises, and analyses the role of policy makers and institutions. The roles of monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, corporate governance and ratings agencies in mitigating or exacerbating crises are considered.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

Islamic Banking*: This module provides an insight into the key features of Islamic banking business. The first part of the course outlines the theoretical foundations and development of Islamic banking practices. In particular, the main characteristics of various types of Islamic banking products are discussed. The second part of the course examines the operational features of Islamic banks, focusing on their performance and how they compete with conventional interest-based banks. To further enhance your employability, we offer the opportunity to undertake a master’s consultancy project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. You’ll work in a small group, typically no more than five people, and tackle a live project from a host organisation under the mentorship of a member of our academic team. The project can be an excellent vehicle for you to relate theory to practice while developing transferable skills.

Your Future

The programme aims to provide a high quality, vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives and other professionals in marketing management.

In addition to subject-specific knowledge, the programmes aim to develop generic management skills necessary to be effective in todays’ challenging business environment.

The programme has a business management orientation related to marketing management and draws upon a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse this business function.

What will I study?

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all our ‘Business with’ Masters pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis, developing your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of the theory and practice of international business. In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Marketing Management.

In the second semester you will build an understanding of the role of relationship marketing, and by doing so, recognise the importance of customer retention and the internal customer. You will also learn about the marketing processes within the context of a globalised world, with an understanding of the business implications. Throughout the course, you can develop an appreciation of the varying approaches to marketing for organisations working within a dynamic global environment and the effect these challenges place upon marketing planning in an international context.

Following your second semester, you will undertake the Advanced Practice element of this programme which consists of either an internship or an applied group consultancy project where you will work with a real organisation on a live business problem. You will benefit from valuable work experience and develop key business insights.

For those completing an internship, you will also undertake a dissertation in a marketing context, supported by an academic supervisor with relevant expertise from this subject area. You will be able to draw upon your learnings and experience from your internship for this. For those not undertaking an internship, you will complete your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

This stage of your programme offers you the opportunity to secure a 12-15 week internship or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, both an excellent way to put your learning in to practice.

This stage of your course takes place between your second and final semester and is one semester (15 weeks) in duration.

The full duration of your programme depends on your start date:
-September start dates: your programme will last up to 22 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.
-January start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in September.
-May start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in May. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in January.

Internships

If you undertake an internship as part of this stage, it may be paid or unpaid, and will last 12-15 weeks. The internship can be sourced by students or the University. We will support you in the application process and equip you with the necessary internship application and selection skills (e.g. CV writing, interview techniques etc). All internships will be approved by the University to ensure that they offer you an appropriate learning experience and working environment. During your internship, you will be allocated an internship tutor who will visit you during your internship and support you in completing the internship assessment.

The module is assessed by a reflective portfolio which is focused on your development via this employment opportunity.

Consultancy project

The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation, working on consultancy-based projects on real business scenarios.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. The Master of Science (M.S.) in Management is offered by the Department of Management in the Jennings A. Jones College of Business. This program, with three concentrations, offers students planning, communication, and ethical decision-making skills through experiential learning in which they will find themselves in the trenches of the real-world work environment. Each concentration—Organizational Leadership, Social Innovation and Not-for-Profit Management, and Supply Chain Management—includes a capstone project in which students will partner with an organization in the industry or non-profit sector.

Course overview
The programme comprises an induction where you will meet fellow MBA course members, acquire an overview of the course and the study facilities offered by Brighton Business School. The course is split into three phases of study, which are divided into two modules each. Students complete module reports for their phase 3 assessments.

Students are now offered the opportunity to study the part-time MBA form the cohort as a two and a half year MBA with the flexibility to choose modules between the generic and Public Service Management routes in order to build an MBA which meets the individual’s preference of focus and modes. Electives will also be offered to both phase 2 and phase 3 students.

Syllabus
Phase 1
Phase 1 begins with a research methods workshop and literature review. The emphasis is on developing analytical and critical capability. Divided into two modules, it provides a sound foundation of management skills and knowledge:

• Quantitative methods workshop
• Managing business processes
• Accounting.

Phase 2
During phase 2 students have the opportunity to attend a research methods workshop, business research methods and a two-day consultancy skills workshop. This phase concentrates on providing students with an understanding of the major management areas. It introduces the disciplines which underpin strategic thinking in organisations:

Strategic Planning and Marketing (30 credits)

Phase 3
The final phase focuses on strengthening students’ strategic thinking and planning abilities:

Elective study (20 credits)
• This module offers the opportunity to explore a management topic of particular interest (eg employment law, consultancy, ebusiness, supply chain management, international marketing

Though at first glance, this may sound easy, it is of course a challenging task. Furthermore, it is not enough just to be a good planner, it is also important to understand how various business processes must be in place in order to support a well functioning supply chain.

The programme provides you with an in-depth knowledge about

- Methods for planning and controlling flows of goods and information in a supply chain. This includes a solid understanding of how to develop the necessary IT based tools.
- How to design a strategy for Supply Chain Management.

The courses of the programme will provide you with analytical skills that enable you to appraise, systematically structure and analyse the possible solutions to complex logistical problems. The teaching form of the programme encourages student participation and this in combination with the final thesis work will provide you with self-management and communication skills.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Prerequisite courses
In the first semester you follow the prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme.

In Research Methods in Logistics you are introduced to the research traditions in the field of logistics, in particular how Operations Research can and should be used.

In Advanced Excel you will get beyond basic Excel knowledge as you will also be introduced to simulation by use of Crystal Ball and to Visual Basic programming.

In Simulation: Modelling and Analysis you will be acquainted with the discrete event simulation methodology and how this can be applied for solving logistical problems.

In Optimisation Methods you acquire basic knowledge about how to model and solve optimisation problems.

In Production Planning and Control you get knowledge about the methodologies that are the foundation of the production planning modules in any ERP system.

Supply Chain Management: Strategy and Design will focus on high-level supply chain strategies and concepts but also provide you with an understanding of the role quantitative models play for doing a supply chain analysis.

Specialisation courses
In the second semester you follow the specialisation courses of the programme.

In Demand Management the students learn tools for forecasting and learn to understand the relationship between forecasts and planning within the company.

In Global Sourcing Strategic focus is on business relations between buyers and sellers on the industrial market. The students will learn to analyse this relationship and to develop well-founded possible solutions for complex problems within the subject area.

In Inventory Control the students get a solid understanding of issues about allocation and dimensioning of inventories in a supply chain.

Distribution and Transportation will be focused on how to solve practical logistical problems within the fields of transportation and Distribution Planning.

Supply Chain Performance Management deals with how decision making units in a supply chain can track their strategic focus while controlling that operations are lean and agile. Essential elements are the roles of key performance indicators (KPIs) and score card tools , as well as the links to issues in management accounting and financial performance measurement.

In Project Management with Accounting Perspectives the student will learn about the qualitative as well as the quantitative issues regarding the management of projects.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and in this way get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
