Students will learn to analyze trends in technology, derive insights from data, design content management strategies, and execute plans across paid, owned and earned media. Students will also learn how to develop and evaluate digital marketing strategies to maximize customer engagement and create meaningful interactions in support of business growth.

Included are experiential learning opportunities with a marketer, a retailer or an agency serving clients, allowing students to improve their leadership, entrepreneurial, organizational, project management and teamwork skills, while effectively applying learning in a real-world environment. As part of the course work, students are eligible to earn industry certifications such as Google AdWords, Google Analytics and Facebook Blueprint. The MSc International Events Marketing welcomes students new to marketing and events and those with some events and marketing experience who wish to specialise or broaden their expertise. Working closely with our Research Centre for International Tourism and Events Management, you will explore recent research and the challenges within the sector to help develop your potential to become a leader within the events sector.

You will gain a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice and its relevance and application within an events context. With live case-studies, simulations and skills workshops we encourage an innovative and creative approach to your learning. 

We place emphasis on theory and practice and the development of core employability skills. You have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project.

You will gain a wealth of knowledge in events marketing including:

  • contemporary issues, challenges and research in the events sector

You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of events marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Researchers within the Centre for International Tourism and Events Management Research or investigating contemporary issues related to the sector, which are shared through our teaching. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Specialist facilities

We're investing over £30m to create modern teaching and learning facilities and creating a new home at Headington for the Business School.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post-event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. While you are encouraged to work in teams to enhance your own and collective learning, group work is only summatively assessed in two compulsory modules.

Field trips

An optional Business in Practice Study Trip is offered to students in the form of a non-credit bearing module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies. 

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. During the second year you’ll spend a whole semester studying in another country. We organise exchanges with universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas, allowing you to take your international experience to another level. You’ll deepen your understanding of relevant topics and there may also be studies related to the language and culture of the host region. On your return you’ll complete your dissertation or consultancy project.

The main assessment method will be via individual assignments and business reports where you’ll be expected to take a deep and critical approach and demonstrate your ability to think widely about the issues presented.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.

You will have the option to undertake a Masters’ consultancy project as an alternative to the dissertation, which will be discussed during the course.

A residential weekend takes place in Semester 2.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by assignments, two per module. It is a requirement of the course to attend and contribute to the residential weekend.

As part of the ever evolving curriculum, all lecturers on the course strive to ensure that assignments are relevant and innovative, firmly linking them to the needs of you and your potential employers. As part of your studies, you'll take part in a weekend residential where you'll engage in various activities that have practical and theoretical use. As part of your learning you'll undertake an improvement project directly linked to your work. This project is guided by a lead management expert. These activities link across the entire curriculum.

Modules are assessed using two types of assessment: Formative and Summative;

Formative assessment is any process whereby we concern ourselves with the process of learning and academic progress in order to assist development and knowledge acquisition, but without conferring a formal mark.Throughout the course there are various formative mechanisms, including group-work activity, learning diaries, action learning sets and the day to day advice and support from tutors and colleagues.

Summative assessment refers to the formalised marking of work, through examinations and the assessment of assignments. Although it is ultimately the summative assessments which confer a result, we intend that the formative processes should enhance the prospects of that result, and its meaning. Present students tell us that this shared engagement with learning has added considerably to their knowledge and confidence.

Teaching and learning

You'll be supported throughout your studies and have access to lecturers for 1-2-1 meetings and guidance. There is an active use of LSBU's Virtual Learning Environment, where all lectures and seminar activities are made available, along with other support materials, such as articles and reference materials. You'll be able to discuss any concerns they have during lecture and seminar sessions and will be encouraged to seek assistance and further clarification on topics and/or assignments.

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

To further enhance your employability, we offer the opportunity to undertake a master’s consultancy project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. You’ll work in a small group, typically no more than five people, and tackle a live project from a host organisation under the mentorship of a member of our academic team. The project can be an excellent vehicle for you to relate theory to practice while developing transferable skills.

Your Future

Our graduates typically go into graduate positions with multinational companies or smaller businesses with operations and supply chains in several countries. Some graduates have gone on to work in their family business.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

The international business specialisation, in the Master of Business Program, enables students to study subjects in Global Business, International Trade, International Financial Management, Regional Studies and International Human Resource Management. Delivery

The Diploma programme is part-time and will normally extend over a period of 18 months. It involves a combination of short courses, distance learning and work-based assignments and projects. The programme is delivered via block release and learning methods are tailored to participants' needs. The MSc element of the programme is delivered over a period of 12 months and involves a series of taught sessions covering research methods and project design.

Teaching And Assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops combining theory with case studies and examples. Guest lectures from visiting professionals will support your learning and industry practitioners will set live project briefs and offer personal feedback.
