The MSc Marketing gives you a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice. With live case-studies, consultancy projects and skills workshops, we encourage an innovative and creative approach to your learning. You will combine theory and practice to develop the key transferable skills that employers are looking for. If you begin your course in September you have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project. By gaining this professional experience you will be well prepared for your future career.

We aim to and give you a wealth of knowledge in marketing management so you gain an understanding of:

  • customer behaviours and expectations, and the variety of channels used to interact with customers
  • analysing marketing data
  • devising marketing strategy for global brands and organisations.

We help you develop the decision-making skills and rationale to devise marketing plans and communications. With a range of specialist modules to choose from you can develop an area of marketing expertise, giving you even further career options.

Course content

You will study six compulsory modules and a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you will choose two optional modules and then you can complete either a dissertation or client project, or if you start the course in September, you also have the opportunity to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role. If you choose not to take a work placement, the course lasts 12 months. If you start in September and take the work placement the course lasts 17 months. You will also have the opportunity to study for and sit the professional certificate exam from the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM) in addition to gaining exemptions from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) diploma, thus enhancing your professional profile.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Accreditation

This course is dual accredited by CMI – a CMI accreditation means you have the option to graduate with your degree and gain a professional CMI qualification (Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership) and there’s no extra study involved. This accreditation is not only a hallmark of excellence, but also provides you with benefits. Approach to assessment

Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

It explores the principles, theoretical concepts and practice of marketing within the context of business and management and will focus on developing academic and applied skills in Marketing including advertising, brand management and loyalty, customer service, public relations and market research.

Compulsory modules:

Marketing Strategy: This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.

Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

International Marketing: The globalization of companies is the involvement of customers, producers, suppliers, retailers and other stakeholders in the global marketing process. International marketing reflects the trend of companies selling products and services across national boundaries. This module provides an overview of contemporary international marketing issues and trends as well as the international marketing planning process. On completion, students will be conversant with the theories, instruments, realities, debates and recent developments in the field, and be capable of researching, devising and applying solutions to key decisions regarding international market entry strategies and the development and management of global brands.

Consumer Behaviour in a Global & Digital World: This module will introduce students to the main theories which purport to explain consumer behaviour from the perspective of gaining an understanding of the consumer as an individual as well as how consumers are influenced by their cultural environment. Given that the internet has become an essential part of modern day life this module will provide students with an understanding of how consumer behaviour is impacted as a result of changes in the way goods and services are marketed and sold online. This module also examines the critical issues and trends whereby the internet has changed consumer behaviour spanning across traditional/geographic boundaries.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

International Marketing Communication: This module examines the processes by which integrated marketing communications (IMC) programs are planned, developed and executed. Individual communication vehicles included in an Integrated Marketing Communication plan are explored.

Public Sector Management: This module identifies the distinctive characteristics of the public sector in a competitive market-driven environment. One year, full time over three trimesters.

In addition to attending lectures and seminars (around 10-12 hours a week) you will be expected to spend significant time (25 or more hours a week) engaged in preparing for classes and additional self-directed study as well as participating in the support programme.

Assessments

An innovative range of individual and group based assessments are used involving the preparation of essays, marketing plans, case study analyses, portfolios and presentations as well as the dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials

To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.

Summer School

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.

Goodman is currently the only business school in Ontario to offer a combined MBA and CPA program.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post-event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. While you are encouraged to work in teams to enhance your own and collective learning, group work is only summatively assessed in two compulsory modules.

You will learn the craft and skills required by analytic consultants, and which employers look for but often find lacking. It will cover process aspects of analytics projects, as well as skills in client interaction, problem structuring and data elicitation (with individuals and/or groups, and with hard/soft data), presenting data-driven analyses, report writing, and developing simple bespoke decision support systems.

The Marketing programme includes an all-important approach to management decision-making as well as a set of business functions. Marketing is indispensable in top management's choices of served markets, competitors, and business portfolios. Customers are central to marketing, which to a large extent involves making promises to customers and then meeting the expectations thus created. This is accomplished through the firm's own value creation activities, but also through support for the value creation process of customers, channel members and other stakeholders. These activities and processes are often international in scope, which is reflected in the content of the different courses in various ways. The international aspect of the marketing programme is also evident in the international faculty and study body, as well as in the possibility to study abroad for a semester.

Thus, the marketing programme prepares you for a wide range of international management careers within the private and public sectors including:

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES
In the first semester four prerequisite courses offer you an advanced insight into the theories of social sciences that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of marketing problems.

The Marketing Research course gives you a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical studies that can support decisions in the marketing policy areas. The course will cover major research tasks and methods including the construction of questionnaires, scale development, observational methods, response models and choice models.

The Marketing in Context course enable students to identify and analyse the stakeholders, flows and interactions, which are impacted by and which impacts on particular changes in the boundary conditions of a marketing system. Also, you will be able to analyse macro-marketing environments and marketing systems in order to develop strategies, which further the aims of the focal stakeholders, whether these are private companies, governmental and/or non-governmental organisation.

Economics of Strategy
This course studies how firms create a competitive advantage and maintain it, and analyses strategic choices regarding the boundaries of the firm, the incentive mechanisms and the organisational structure that will best serve their strategies.

The Economic Psychology covers the fundamentals of human behaviour in economic contexts, from a social cognition perspective as well as from a judgment and decision-making perspective. The course applies fundamental theories and methods to key areas in marketing, including consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, marketing management, pricing, communication, innovation, and relationship marketing.

SPECIALISATION COURSES
The second semester comprises the following compulsory specialisation courses

Marketing Communication discusses the role of communication as well as of how the integration of several communication tools may support to achievement of the overall goal of the firm’s communication strategy.

Pricing Strategy provides an introduction to the firm’s pricing problem and provides practical techniques to understanding price setting in the context of the firm’s customers, costs and competition.

Innovation Management focuses on understanding the challenges, mechanisms and approaches for the management of innovation.

Managing Marketing Channels and Networks presents the concepts and analytical tools needed to design, build and manage distribution channels and networks.

Customer Relationship Management provides an insight into the theoretical and conceptual foundations of CRM, how CRM can enhance organisational performance and the role of measuring and managing customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and customer profitability.

Marketing Management and Strategy ends the semester by focusing on marketing management from a strategic perspective, combining and linking all policy areas to decision-making at top management level.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
