As digitisation transforms the media industries, from music streaming to on-demand TV, there has been an increasing recognition of the economic and cultural value of art, museums, video games and 'heritage'. This programme offers the unique opportunity to critically analyse these developments in a fully global context, across the full range of School of Arts courses in Media, Music and Art and Archaeology.

Alongside critical analysis and global expertise, you will benefit from practical hands-on experience in film production, sound recording, podcasting and broadcasting that will enable you to enhance your skill-set, in preparation for a career in the creative and cultural sector or for PhD level research.

Course detail

Students can tailor their studies to focus on particular regions, art forms or themes, choosing from the wide array of courses that reflect the unique regional focus available at SOAS, and gain access to world-leading experts on the music, culture and traditions of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Alongside critical analysis and regional expertise students can choose from a number of practical hands-on courses, in sound recording, podcasting and broadcasting, that will enable them to enhance their skill-set.

This course has been designed for those seeking to work in some capacity in the creative and cultural sector - either as an artist or producer, or in cultural policy, development or analysis. It also suits anyone looking to establish a research profile in Global Creative and Cultural Industries.

You will have access to a wealth of study resources including the SOAS Library, one of the world's most important academic libraries, attracting scholars from across the globe.

Format and assessment

The MA has a core component comprising two half-unit courses, the first (‘Analytical Approaches to the Global Creative and Cultural Industries’) taken by all students, and the second allowing students to develop their expertise in a ‘pathway’, chosen from:

• ‘The Music Business’
• ‘Asia and Africa on Display: Objects, Exhibitions and Transculturation’
• ‘Studies in Global Media and Post-National Communication’
• ‘Global Film Industries’.

Practical/skills courses can then be chosen in multimedia (film/editing), sound recording, and digital and broadcasting communications; while optional, one of these will be required if a student elects to take the optional half-unit course ‘Directed Study in Industry’ but lacks appropriate skills training on entry.

‘Directed Study in Industry’ allows students to undertake an internship with an institution, organisation or enterprise.

Additional regional and theoretical courses are available from existing School of Arts and other SOAS MA/MMus programmes.

The Dissertation will be on a topic relating to the creative and cultural industries. It may either be on a theoretical topic or develop from the ‘pathway’ chosen by the student, and it has the option to incorporate multimedia materials.

Suitability

Students will likely fall into two types:

• The first group will typically be interested in pursuing careers as practitioners, managers, consultants, policy advisers and entrepreneurs in the creative and cultural industries in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Such students will typically take advantage of the potentials to hone practical/core skills, to develop their knowledge base about creative and cultural industries in a global context, and to maximise the ‘Directed Study in Industry’ opportunity.

• The second group will typically be more concerned with developing academic research in the creative and cultural sectors, and the intersections between industry, cultural policy and international development. Such students will most likely concentrate their programme of study on the regional and theoretical courses available.

The MA, then, is suitable for those seeking employment as practitioners, managers, consultants, policy advisers and entrepreneurs in the creative and cultural industries, and for those who aspire to a Research degree.

This Pre-Masters programme is aimed at postgraduate students who are considering undertaking an MA in subjects related to the cultural and creative industries, but need a year to develop or consolidate their language skills in academic English.

You'll also have the opportunity to study some background theory, and to familiarise yourself both with ways of working in British academic culture and in the standards required at Masters degree level.

Guaranteed progression

Half of the programme is made up of English for Academic Purposes modules, concentrating on different areas of language development, made up of:

Credits and levels of learning

An undergraduate honours degree is made up of 360 credits – 120 at Level 4, 120 at Level 5 and 120 at Level 6. If you are a full-time student, you will usually take Level 4 modules in the first year, Level 5 in the second, and Level 6 modules in your final year. A standard module is worth 30 credits. Some programmes also contain 15-credit half modules or can be made up of higher-value parts, such as a dissertation or a Major Project.

The MSc in Cultural Studies and Entrepreneurship is a collaboration between the Department of Cultural Studies and the Nottingham University Business School. Its aims are to provide students with a critical understanding of cultural studies, its principles and practices, and with the skills to explore various models for the development of creative enterprises. Students aquire an understanding of the importance of the culture industry and market analysis while developing an ability to carry out financial analysis of a cultural enterprise. They become fluent in the financial, marketing and managerial aspects of the culture industry and gain knowledge of leading edge culture industry fields. They come to appreciate the interrelationships that exist between fundamental research and its practical application, and acquire the critical, analytical, technological and business background to enable them to make a significant contribution to today's cultural and creative sector of the economy.

The full-time MSc in Cultural Studies and Entrepreneurship lasts 12 months and is divided into two semesters, and a summer period, with students taking two modules per semester. A research project is then completed over the summer and submitted in September. Part-time students complete the programme within 24–36 months. Our MA in Global Culture and Creativity will enable you to develop research analysis on the 21st century cultural industries and creative economy, based on cultural diversity and individual creativity.

Whilst culture industry, cultural production and consumption, creative economy and creative class are used as core theories, the programme incorporates wider literature and cultural models to contextualise theories. In addition, practical learning experiences are designed to enhance your learning experience. The optional modules available will further enhance your research skills and employability in global arts, cultural sectors and beyond.

The MA in Global Culture and Creativity sits within the School of Modern Languages at Cardiff University, which offers a wealth of global research and teaching resource, and provides forefront 21st century research discourse of cultural industries and the creative economy.

Distinctive features

There are four distinctive features of this programme:

  • Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teaching and learning: This programme bridges research and teaching fields between arts humanities and social sciences, as well as building the link between global literature texts and global cultural products.
  • Area studies set in a global context: This programme introduces wide area studies into individual subject learning, such as publishing houses, museums, theatres, digital media and others. You will have the rare opportunity to compare the making of texts and cultural products in different cultural settings, through individual and collaborative creativity across the globe.
  • Global arts institutions: This programme provides the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, as well as benefiting from guest speakers from private and public cultural industries. This will help you conceptualise research theories and develop research questions, as well as to establish valuable networks at the earliest opportunity.
  • Linguistic skills: You will have the opportunity to study optional modules from across our Undergraduate translation and languages portfolios. (Please note, these modules will not be credit bearing)

Learning and assessment

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, presentations, blogs, portfolios, tutorials and seminars. Lectures take a range of forms but generally provide a broad structure for each subject, introduce key concepts and convey relevant up-to-date information. You will also have access to recorded versions of some lectures.

In tutorials and seminars you will have the opportunity to discuss particular themes or topics, to consolidate and get feedback on individual learning and to develop skills in oral presentation. Communication skills are developed in tutorials, where you will make individual contributions to group study, for example by summarising a particular reading or debate for the group.

You will also participate in a range of small group work, including table top exercises. Participation in diverse learning activities, such as small-group discussions, debates, oral presentations, independent research tasks and written assignments will develop intellectual and presentation skills. This interaction is intended to build personal and professional networks in preparation for future careers.

Where possible, field trips from one of the three themed lectures/seminars will take place at appropriate cultural industrial venues and relevant industry staff will be invited to give talks.

How will I be supported?

Throughout the programme, subject tutors will provide a first point of contact if you have any academic queries. You will also be allocated a personal tutor who will help you to reflect on your performance and offer advice.

A range of other staff are available to provide further support, including the admin support team, specialist librarians and a Disability and Diversity Officer who ensures that reasonable adjustments are made for students with disabilities.

Study skills sessions will be made available, including an essay writing workshop and support for planning and executing a dissertation where, working closely with a supervisor, you will be guided through research design, fieldwork practices, ethical clearance considerations and the writing stage.

All modules within the Programme make extensive use of the University’s Virtual Learning Environment, Learning Central, where you can access discussion forums and find course materials including recordings of lectures, links to related materials and multiple-choice tests.

The programme convenor will also provide help with career planning (in conjunction with the University’s Careers Service).

For the internship, two members of the School’s professional services staff are delegated to provide the support.

To have knowledge is a good thing – but to spread it is even more rewarding. During this period, you will be asked to increase societal awareness of the possibilities within the creative economy. Designing today:

Designing Today will help you develop a critical appreciation of the role of design practice and of designers as drivers of social, economic and organisational change. Your final project will be an exhibition. Topics include:

- Exploring service design and organisational design tools and methods
- Seeing social interaction as value creation
- Considering the contemporary role of designers in the area of management: industrial, experience and knowledge economies
- Understanding design not simply as the manufacture of industrial artefacts, but as an activity that creates value

Designing research:

Within Designing Research, you’ll develop an understanding of user-centred design as an ethnographic and engagement-led process of iterative development built upon collaborative working practices and creative refinement and resolution that responds to a variety of contexts. You’ll be evaluated via a project process journal and reflective writing. Components include:

- Formulating design enquiries (open-ended, empirically validated and discursive) that create the possibility of new knowledge and innovative practices or behaviours
- Methods: critical observation, ethnography, STEP analysis, future casting

From idea to application:

From Idea to Application will help you internalise design practice as the material manifestation and evolution of value propositions. You’ll move from collaborative concept generation to product proposal, refinement and validation as understood across a variety of value regimes: manufacture and supply chain, branding and communication, user experience, etc.

The focus will be on the blend of industrial and digital artefacts, experience of use and the cognitive and narrative dimensions of innovative products and their collaborative production.

You’ll be evaluated through a project presentation and exhibition.

International winter school:

Led by the Institute of Design Innovation, the Winter School is an exemplar of our progressive teaching style and offers a method of research and learning that is both bespoke and distinct. The Winter School brings together international students and academics to fashion a new role for design in the exploration of a contemporary challenge during an intense two-week period.

Leading design academics and students from Köln International School of Design (KISD) and Copenhagen’s KADK (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation) will join students and academics of the GSA, Audencia and other institutions from around the globe, forming an international network of diverse disciplines.

This component of the course offers a unique opportunity to examine current issues in a transcultural environment at the GSA’s stunning new campus in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Research and teaching carried out during the Winter School benefit organisations and communities as well as students.

Your project is the culmination of your programme experience and the most ambitious expression of your individual motivation, creativity and ability to deliver. Course content

Core modules in Semester One will lay the foundations of theprogramme. You’ll explore different theoretical approaches to understand therelationships between culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship, learning aboutcultural industries and how public policy impacts on cultural development.

To help you focus your studies in the areas that suit yourinterests and career plans, you’ll choose one of two optional modules whichallow you to specialise in either the relationship between culture and place ormanagement and leadership in the arts and cultural industries.

You’ll then choose another optional module to complement orbroaden your studies. You could focus on topics such as audience engagement orcultural policy, or you may be able to gain experience of consultancy workingin teams to complete a brief for an external organisation. If you select theCreative Work module, you could spend two weeks on a placement in a culturalorganisation as the basis of a small-scale research project.

Theoretical and analytical depth is coupled with an emphasis on the realities of contemporary cultural production, in order to deliver both a rigorous academic experience and a foundation for a career in the sector.

Programme structure

The taught element of this programme consists of six core courses, totalling 100 credits, and a slot in semester 2 in which you can take 1 or 2 course/s of your choice (totalling 20 credits). This structure allows you to develop key sector management skills and knowledge, while also providing space to tailor the programme to suit your interests and ambitions. You can choose two 10 credit options from a range offered by the Adam Smith Business School, strengthening the management component of your degree. Alternatively you can select an approved 20 credit option from another subject area. 

The teaching on the two largest core courses, Creative Industries and Cultural Policy (semester 1) and Contemporary Cultural Production (semester 2) is supported by a series of regular guest lectures, in which we invite practitioners, policy makers and key influencers from across the creative sector to share their perspectives.

Assessment is based primarily on individual written essays and assignments but also involves presentation. You will undertake academic research essays and report writing tailored to an industry brief, ensuring you develop a range of writing skills relevant to both academic and professional contexts.

In the summer period (April to August), you will complete a research dissertation (worth 60 credits) that will enable you to develop, investigate and present a substantial and original project of personal interest. The academic team within the Centre for Cultural Policy Research have extensive experience of conducting empirical studies within the creative sector, and are thus able to support a wide range of industry and policy related topics and research approaches.

Dr Sarah Ralph is a lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies, and her expertise lies in the realm of empirical methods and approaches to the study of production cultures, media audiences and reception.

Dr Ibrahim Seaga Shaw has a background as a reporter, editor, sub editor and correspondent in Sierra Leone, France and the UK, and brings real-life issues to the classroom.

Dr Gabriel Moreno practiced journalism for 13 years, including as a general and financial news correspondent with Reuters news agency in Mexico City. He was awarded a PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication from Westminster University and is currently involved in research projects involving new media and migration, and social media and environmental communication. He became a fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy in December 2015.

Teaching And Assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of theory and practice, including taught sessions, field trips, lectures, seminars and group assignments.

You’ll discover the theories and issues informing real-work examples within a range of media and cultural industries and then put these to use in workshop activities which reinforce the links between theory and practice. You will be encouraged to develop your communication skills by taking an active part in seminars.

The dissertation module provides an opportunity for you to put learning into practice by designing, executing and writing up an original piece of research on a topic negotiated between you and your dissertation supervisor.

You will have the opportunity to go on at least one industry visit and hear from professionals working in a local media organisation. Previous visits have included to sites which represent successful local cultural regeneration such as BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts and Sage, Gateshead.

During this full-time MA Cultural Management you'll work creatively in a department that offers one of London's richest portfolios of arts and humanities courses, appealing to a range of students who wish to develop their expertise in fields including visual and performing arts, advertising, architecture, crafts,design, fashion, film, publishing, TV and radio, and video games.

The course will develop your understanding of the practice and management of the creative and cultural industries, as well as the political, economic and cultural contexts in which these industries operate. You'll develop your skills and critical understanding of the cultural and creative media sector, and the management of cultural organisations in a wide variety of contexts including drama, creative writing, visual arts curation, festival and theatre management. You'll also have hands-on experience of producing or managing a project.

If you want to develop your career in arts, media and cultural organisations then this course is for you. In addition to being taught by a highly experienced and qualified team you will also benefit greatly from the internship element of the course. This mix of practical experience, combined with academic rigour will provide you with a set of applied and transferable skills - critical analysis, problem solving, and research techniques – as well as specific knowledge related to the International cultural and media sector.

Timetable

Year 1 class contact time is typically 8 hours per week plus individual tutorial plus independent study.

Teaching and learning

The course offers one-to-one supervisions in three modules.There are regular additional support events, such as visits to galleries and performance viewings. The course now boasts a new shared production office, which allows to you to work on projects collaboratively in an environment similar to that which you could expect after graduation.

Placements

The course offers you the opportunity to take part in significant work experience placements in London, the UK or possibly abroad. Both the preparation for the placement, which we guide you through, and the placement itself are assessed modules as part of the course. Our positioning in Central London, and our developed industry links means that we are exceptionally placed for students taking part on the placements.

Working with an individual experienced mentor on a project is also an alternative to the traditional placement.

Past placements include: Royal National Theatre Archive, Golley Slater Marketing, Saatchi Gallery.

Facilities

Borough Road Gallery

The gallery is a home for visual art and a unique part of the University's heritage. Opened in 2012, the Borough Road Gallery contains valuable and significant works of Post War British Art in a public collection, produced by the celebrated artist and teacher David Bomberg (1890-1957).

Arts, music and cultural events in London

The University couldn't be better located being only a 10-15 minute walk from the Southbank Centre, National Theatre, BFI IMAX, Tate Modern, Royal Festival Hall, The Old Vic Theatre, The Young Vic and therefore the best of London's plays, performances, exhibitions and screenings.

Professional links

In the department we have had recent guest lecturers from the Association of British Orchestras, British Youth Opera, Donmar Warehouse , The Wireless Theatre Company and the National Maritime Museum. In addition many of our modules are taught by practicing professionals from the arts and media.

The Department is also host to the Heritage Lottery Funded, Borough Road Gallery. Students on this course will have the opportunity to take the internships in the gallery and work with the curator to deliver a programme of outreach and interpretation of the collection.
