The Cultural Events Management MSc is tailored to meet the needs of the dynamic and expanding industry of cultural events and festivals. You will explore the connections between culture and business/ management, while applying theory, key skills and knowledge to practical experience in the industry. At the heart of the course is a synergy of arts, culture, and management theory and practice, which ensures that you will deepen your understanding of, and competence in, developing and managing cultural and/or commercial events.

You will have an excellent learning experience combined with intensive study and research options with key professionals in the field, such as the British Arts Festivals Association, Festival Republic, Glastonbudget, Spark Children's Art Festival and many more. You will also work with teaching staff at the cutting edge of research and new ideas in the field, as well as helping to organise and run our annual week-long festival, Cultural Exchanges.

You will receive one-to-one tutorial support, participate in lively workshops, seminars and lectures, and have the opportunity to research individual festivals and events. Contact time is nine hours per week. Assessment methods include essays, portfolios,
presentations, proposals, reports, and a dissertation. The course also provides encounters with a wide range of professionals in the events field through the various guest lectures and study workshops.

DMU is linked to festivals and events across Europe through its membership of the European Festivals Research Project. It is also linked to the annual Leicester Comedy Festival, which started as a DMU student project in 1993. The Cultural Events Management staff run their own Cultural Exchanges festival and the team are involved in research on festivals from music festivals such as Latitude and Summer Sundae Weekender, which creates opportunities for your own research projects and work placements. One major feature of the MSc is that staff offer modules within their research specialisations, giving you the opportunity to be at the cutting edge of new discoveries and developments within the field.

Within the UK alone it is estimated that there may be up to 25,000 festivals and events with a strong cultural dimension. When one adds to that the increasing number of commercial events, it is clear that there is a substantial market for our graduates in the UK and globally. Many people employed in the festivals sector travel from one festival to another on three-four month contracts. Over and above that, there are of course major sporting events such as the Olympics, or the commercial expos which all provide employment opportunities.

The programme recognises that International events are increasingly important within a globalizing world, reflecting the increasing levels of interconnectedness and levels of social consciousness of the world as a single place Mega sporting and cultural events also have an increased political saliency to a wide variety of governmental and non-governmental actors across the world. In this sense, contemporary sporting and cultural events are significant elements of a globalised politic, ‘influencing and being influenced by politics and foreign policy’. International events are therefore inseparable from politics, international relations and diplomacy (public or cultural). They are also now accepted as an important element in nations’ soft power offensives, to the point that securing a positive impact on the nation’s image (or brand) or international prestige has moved from being a welcome consequence to a significant justification for investing in hosting sports mega-events. This particular emphasis on Cultural Diplomacy and its historical and contemporary application in the public sector, private sector and civil society, provides students with expertise in three distinct academic fields, thus with an academic and practical advantage in the European and Global Arena.

In addition to required coursework, the program includes educational & cultural events, conferences, professional trainings, tours, visits and meetings with foreign officials, which are further incorporated into the curriculum. Students will meet with leading experts working in international organizations, embassies, and academic institutions, and will engage with specialists in the areas of International Relations & Economics, Business, Communication, Politics, Human Rights, Culture, Peace Building, Multilateral Diplomacy, Conflict Resolution, and Development.

The program provides students with practical experience for both academic and professional development, preparing students for careers in diverse fields, such as international relations, the humanities, politics, and culture, foreign policy and international economics. On a practical level, the international environment of the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies offers students a unique opportunity to interact with leading experts and academics at a wide variety of international organizations and research centers. This exceptional learning environment leads to original research and independent study opportunities. Program Curriculum
The program consists of 90 ECTS credits in total and has duration of two trimesters, and a Thesis to be submitted towards the completion of the program. The first trimester of the program is hosted by the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley and the second trimester is hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin. This unique structure of the program provides the students with the advantage of learning in 2 different major European cities and thus the opportunity to gain academic, professional and personal experience from living in different cultures. Furthermore, the program’s structure provides a unique opportunity to benefit from the study environment in both an international non-governmental organization and a traditional public University.

The program follows the conventional university structure of a one year academic program divided into two trimesters, where Students are offered elective courses to accompany mandatory courses, a professional development experience and the final thesis.

Financials
The tuition cost is 9,000 Euros for the full program. The fees cover only the tuition fees, and do not include housing or any other living costs and related expenses.

MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise acknowledges the need for multi-skilled individuals who can both generate the ideas for original arts and cultural events, and provide leadership for the teams that realise them. The course enables responses to new forms of creative practice, and changing global conditions.

Content

MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise acknowledges that we are living in a fast-changing, globalised world, which presents a great number of opportunities and challenges for cultural innovation. This Masters programme takes these changing conditions as a starting point to engage you in developing new knowledge and skills in order to manage cultural projects in the UK and around the world.

The course has been developed specifically in response to an increasing need for multi-skilled individuals who can both generate the ideas for original arts and cultural events, and provide leadership for the teams that realise them. These individuals will be dynamic, responsive, fluent in public and private sectors, and have the ability to collaborate and develop networks.

Structure

Option 1: 90 weeks over 2 years

This means that to achieve the Masters qualification your learning is timetabled across 90 weeks over two full calendar years. To achieve the PG Cert takes 30 weeks’ study, over a nine-month period, and for the PG Dip, it takes 60 weeks’ study, over an 18-month period. Both PG Cert and PG Dip are offered as an exit award only.

Option 2: Up to 5 years

In this mode, individual units can be undertaken over a maximum five-year registration period. Unit one is compulsory and must be taken as the initial unit. Units two to six can be taken in any order thereafter. Unit seven can be undertaken only when units one to six have been passed.

In either mode, the MA award is based solely on the achievement in unit seven.

Course units

Unit 1: Researching Arts and Cultural Enterprise, in which you are introduced to key concepts of cultural production as well as the research, writing, analysis and evaluation skills essential for postgraduate study. You begin to work together as a group, learning to negotiate, agree ground rules, communicate and share ideas and, importantly, learn how to approach and resolve difficulty and conflict.

Unit 2: Practice, Policy and Markets engages you in the macro analysis of the realm of cultural and artistic production and dissemination. It enables you to develop an understanding of cultural production in both the commercial and the public realms.

Unit 3: Contexts – Local and Global Challenges looks at the impact of contemporary values and discourses on the future. It interrogates globalisation as a challenge as well as an opportunity, and facilitates an understanding of enterprise in uncertain contexts.

Unit 4: Arts Entrepreneurship explores the ways in which creativity, innovation, problem solving and entrepreneurship intersect. It employs real-world examples to enable you to think about business model innovation, new markets, new experiences and services, new ways of communication and new organisational models.

Unit 5: Business Models and Finance is the core business unit of the course. It introduces you to the basics of general business processes and developing strategies around short and longer-term challenges. Teaching includes theoretical approaches, and case-study-based learning.

Unit 6: Focus: Social Impact and Innovation engages with the overarching principles of social responsibility, ethical behaviours, social innovation and theories of socially-engaged practices, and challenges you to form an understanding of how cultural events and activities can support engagement with innovation and innovative practices.

Unit 7: Dissertation or live personal project is the final, Masters-specific 60-credit unit, which enables you to reflect critically on theories and critical skills encountered previously in the course, while proposing new approaches to cultural production, in a self-directed dissertation or major personal project. The dissertation is an individual academic study, based on models and theories discussed throughout the course; the live project puts strategies of cultural production into practice. This unit culminates in you working together to organise an online exhibition of your work.

Providing a sound theoretical underpinning of the cultural, political, ethical and economic aspects of international events management, this course offers you the practical and strategic understanding required to run international events effectively.

Guest speakers from industry regularly share their knowledge and insights through a series of lectures, case studies and field trips, which keeps the course contemporary and industry focused. You will also be invited to bring your own cultural experience and understandings to the course, making it attractive to home and non-EU students.

You will gain a thorough grounding in key aspects of international events management. This course is suitable if you want to enter the events profession as a manager or if you have events experience and want to enhance your event knowledge in an international context either in the UK or overseas.

For Students from outside the EU who want to improve their English and academic skills we offer a combined masters course with the MSc International Events Management. If you have an IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5 you can study for two semesters before starting your postgraduate degree. Teaching and Learning

This course is delivered full and part-time. The full-time course is taught over two days per week and if started in September takes twelve months to complete. If you choose to start in January, the course will take eighteen months due to the summer break.

The course requires a great deal of independent learning and study. The course is approximately equivalent to a working week requiring approximately 38 hours study in total, including contact time. However this is only a rough guide and will vary according to the academic workload and the students preferred work mode.

Part-time the course is taught one day per week over a two year period. There is some flexibility with part-time delivery and may have the option to expand or shorten your studies in particular circumstances.

The teaching methods used are diverse and include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practical exercises and online learning materials. Some modules adopt a blended learning approach using online materials and face-to-face delivery.

This part-time Masters course is designed to give you a career advantage in the tourism and events sectors. Our course blends a social science approach with the development of job-related skills that are needed by, for example, events managers, festival coordinators and exhibition organisers.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will study theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is a core module in ‘Events Management Studies’ and an optional module with a focus on work-based learning. We organise a number of field trips and company visits to put your learning into a real-world context. You can negotiate the topic of your Masters project to reflect your personal interests and career aspirations.

The University of Sunderland is a member of the Institute of Hospitality's Education Membership Scheme. It includes a board room as well as bookable areas to hold meetings and to meet with staff and visitors from outside the University.

University Library Services
The St Peter’s Library is excellent for tourism and there’s a full-time librarian who is dedicated to the Business and Tourism sections.
Further resources are available at the main Murray Library, which has a total of over 430,000 books with many more available through the inter-library loan service. You will benefit from a wide range of journals and periodicals, many of them in an online format. The University spends around £1 million every year on new books and resources.

IT provision
When it comes to IT provision you can take your pick from hundreds of PCs as well as Apple Macs in the David Goldman Informatics Centre and St Peter’s Library. There are also free WiFi zones throughout the campus. If you have any problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.

This programme takes an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary culture and cultural theory.

Adopting transcultural perspectives, we encourage investigations into the questions of identity and representation; the urban realm as a site of intense cultural production; and instructive tensions between spatial, textual, visual and material forms that both shape and are shaped by cultural contexts, specific practices, various image and media technologies and theoretical debates.

In engaging with the complexities of visual knowledge and the technological mediations of images, texts and objects, the programme encourages critical reflections and research methodologies in which image and visual practice contribute to the research corpus and serve as critical tools of investigation.

In exploring social and political conditions in which cultural expressions take place, especially the local and global processes of transformation and contestation, the programme offers a unique focus on the diverse manifestations of material cultures and cultural landscapes.

Multidisciplinary and critical comparative approaches are key facets of the discipline of cultural studies and we welcome students coming from varied academic backgrounds and cultural traditions.

Programme structure

The programme combines seminar and tutorial work with group discussions, class presentations, essays and longer research projects (dissertations).

Both core courses and some option courses employ innovative pedagogies that encourage critical and theoretical reflection through engagement with visual production, visual essays and multimedia presentations.

Option courses are drawn from architecture, history of art and other Schools within the wider University.

Working at the intersections of cultural studies, humanities and creative practice, the course asks you to consider where and how culture happens. With visits to cultural organisations, lectures from practitioners and a focus on practices of writing, curating and presentation, this MRes is ideal for students interested in taking an active role in cultural production and intellectual enquiry.

The programme is taught by academics from across the School of Arts and is designed to prepare you to undertake MPhil or PhD study in arts and humanities, including practice-led approaches to research and development of approaches to cultural production beyond academia. Digital editing
There are 70 workstations with state-of-the-art HD Edit systems, including Final Cut Pro, Avid and Media Composer. There is also a digital audio postproduction area with four voiceover booths.

Radio studios
We have five radio studios including a transmission suite for Spark FM, our student-run community radio station. It broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a target audience of 15-24 year olds.

The goals of team building activities is to help participants know each other and create a collaborative atmosphere in class. Moreover, these activities will introduce participants to Milano and its cultural assets. Team building will include:

Core Courses

The goals of basic courses is to reinforce competences related to the two souls of the Master Program: Humanities and Management. The courses provide training for skills in art history and in their management and they will give participants the op- portunity to align their competencies and exchange knowledge.

● Art History: seminars, lectures and visits to provide participants with fundamentals of visual arts history

● History of Performing Arts: seminars and lectures to share fundamentals about film, theatre and music history.

Internship

To complete the Master in Arts Management, participants are required to carry out a three-months internship in a cultural institutions or company in one of the above mentioned fields. They will have the chance to be included in the Master Curricu- lum Vitae book, that will be transmitted to the major institutions and organizations in Italy and abroad.

An international learning experience

Located in the unique city of Milan which contributes to a valuable international perspective. This glowing city allows students to merge the learning experience with the cultural atmosphere of the city. Students will have the opportunity to practice their knowledge through field projects and internships even beyond the classroom.

Trained faculty

A national and international academic and professional faculty using teaching methods that foster an interactive and hands-on approach to issues of cultural heritage management.

Scholarships

All scholarships are assigned on a merit basis and will be mostly given to students who apply by the priority deadline. Some scholarships may also target specific geographic regions.

Objectives

The MSc in Cross Cultural Marketing & Negotiation is designed to allow students who wish to prepare for their future international careers, to acquire the theoretical knowledge and skills required to take up key positions in Marketing and/or Sales Management, both in France and abroad. In addition to courses given by international experts, students get to learn from exchanging with other participants, as the cohort welcomes applicants from the whole world (15 different nationalities on average). The programme is also a unique opportunity to extend their professional networks, thanks to Business Challenges and Junior Consulting Projects, where they develop closer ties among themselves. Finally, with the active support of companies such as GEODIS, Société Générale or TV5 Monde, CCM&N students hone their competencies to become as attractive propositions as possible for the employment market.

Professionalisation -

- One 5-week Junior Consulting Project: Marketing or Cross-cultural Communication. JCPs (‘Missions') proposed and validated by the Programme staff (Pédagogie HEC Entrepreneurs),
- One 2-week Challenge: Negotiation or Cross-cultural Marketing,
- One 6-month work placement/ internship.

Lectures are given by EMN full-time PhD faculty, by external lecturers from various nationalities, and by professional adjuncts from the Marketing, Sales, and Purchasing, International Business, Négotiation, Webmarketing and Cross-cultural Management industries.

Campus Location -
EM Normandie is located in Normandy, a region in North-West France, with a coastline opening on the English Channel. There is easy access by motorway or rail to nearby Paris, and several day and night ferries to England.

The Campus in Caen is located in the heart of a Science Park ( Technopole de Caen-Normandie - Plateau Nord), in the middle of the Université de Caen Campus II. Near the downtown area, the School is connected to the city centre by bus and tram.

A major university town, Caen has a beautiful historical inner city, only 30 minutes away from the D-day Landing Beaches.

Caen is also N° 1 (jointly with Grenoble) in the ‘Student Life' category which includes categories such as "Going Out", "Culture" and "Sports. International Candidates

International Applicants (who require a visa) must send their applications by June 13th 2016 at the latest. Application files will be accepted as from September 2015.

If you are admitted, you will be requested to send in a first down payment of € 1,000 (which will be deducted from the total tuition fee) in order to secure your place in the programme.
