Structure

You'll be supervised by a full-time member of staff, generally agreed during the preliminary discussions regarding your research with the ICCE Director.

The MPhil programme offers the opportunity for the student to continue their research to a PhD. PhD theses are up to a maximum of 100,000 words.

You should aim to complete and submit your thesis within the time-frame specified by Goldsmiths. This is normally three to four years for full-time students and four to six years for part-time.

A thesis for the award of MPhil may be submitted after two years of full-time or three years of part-time study. Registration can be changed from full-time to part-time status, and vice-versa, with the agreement of your supervisor. You'll be required to complete the appropriate form for change of status available from the Admissions Office or from the ICCE Administrator.

Research training programme

All students enrolled in the MPhil programme are initially required to attend a weekly seminar in research methodology conducted by the Goldsmiths Graduate School. These seminars are designed to bring together research students with diverse interests in a cooperative and stimulating environment.

Its objectives include training students for the Spring Review Week, written and oral presentations, preparation for upgrading procedures and publication of articles.

Assessment

Examination is by thesis and a viva.

How to apply

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. The choice of topic may be influenced by the current research in the department or the requirements of an external funding body.

If you wish to study on a part-time basis, you should also indicate how many hours a week you intend to devote to research, whether this will be at evenings or weekends, and for how many hours each day.

Your research proposal

Along with your application details, personal statement and academic reference, you should also upload a research proposal at the point of application.

This should be in the form of a clear, concise and coherent statement of the proposed area of research of at least five pages and no more than seven pages of A4 and should include:

1) A working title for your research project.

2) A clear statement about what you want to work on and why it is important, interesting, relevant and realistic. Detail your main research objectives; these could be articulated as hypotheses, propositions, research questions, or problems to solve. What difference do you think your research will make? Is your research achievable in the time allocated? (e.g. 3 years full‐time)

3) Some background knowledge and context of the area in which you wish to work, including key literature, key people, key research findings. Think about how your work links to the work of others in the same or related fields?

4) Some consideration of the methods/approach you might use. Describe how will you conduct your research? Will you use existing theories, new methods/approaches or develop new methods/approaches?

5) Some indication of the strategy and timetable for your research project and any research challenges you may face. What would be the main stages of your project and what would you be expecting to do in each year of your PhD?

6) A short list of the key references which support your research proposal. References should be listed in an appropriate convention (e.g. Harvard). Such references should be used throughout your research proposal to demonstrate that you have read and understood the work of others. Other relevant material that you are aware of, but not actually used in writing your proposal, can also be added as a bibliography.

When preparing a research proposal it is useful to have a good awareness of the whole of the MPhil process. Goldsmiths' Professor Les Back has a series of podcasts on the topic that can be very helpful. These are all available on our podcasts page.

What you study:

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component. You will have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions. All students take 'Theories of the Culture Industry: Work, Creativity and Precariousness' and 'Entrepreneurial Modelling', and your chosen pathway will determine the 'Creative Practice' course and 'Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production' course that you take. In order to enable collaborative learning amongst those seeking to develop creative and cultural businesses and those already within them, we intend wherever possible to teach all students together, irrespective of the particular route on which you are registered.

Entrance requirements:

You should normally have an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in design, architecture, art, computing, engineering, education, social sciences or any other discipline that has a demonstrable relationship to design and/or research. Applicants with relevant work experience will also be considered. You must demonstrate in your written application and in interview that you have a capacity for creative and cultural entrepreneurship, and that you are able to meet the intellectual demands of the programme. Your application will not be considered unless it includes a design portfolio which should be uploaded electronically as part of your main application.

If your first language is not English you need a minimum score of 7.0 in IELTS (including 7.0 in the written element) or equivalent.

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production within one creative industry sector

You can choose from two strands for this module (i) College-Based and (ii) Internship.

(i) College-based

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline, although taking into account the cross-over with other areas – including Performing Arts (theatre and dance), Visual Arts, Music, Design, Media & Communications, Publishing and Computing. As well as studying producing companies, this would also include consideration of creative agencies relating to the above. The programme will start with the above areas but in this modular system can easily expand to include other subjects.

Computing offers Sector overview: Games and Interactive Entertainment Industries.

Design offers Sector overview consisting of: Component A – Design and Futuring, and Component B – Business and Design, or an industry placement.

Drama offers A Sector overview: Cultural Policy and Practice combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

Fashion offers Designing Fashion, taught by the Department of Design (subject to approval).

Media and Communications offers Either an industry placement, assessed by placement report, or an industry contextual module: Media Landscapes.

Music offers Sector overview of Music industries (a) combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

(ii) Internship

You will undertake an internship within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered in media for modules II and IV.

Module I: Theories of the Culture Industry: work, creativity and precariousness- 30 credits

(i) College-based

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline, although taking into account the cross-over with other areas – including Performing Arts (theatre and dance), Visual Arts, Music, Design, Media & Communications, Publishing and Computing. As well as studying producing companies, this would also include consideration of creative agencies relating to the above. The programme will start with the above areas but in this modular system can easily expand to include other subjects.

Computing offers Sector overview: Games and Interactive Entertainment Industries.

Design offers Sector overview consisting of: Component A – Design and Futuring, and Component B – Business and Design, or an industry placement.

Drama offers A Sector overview: Cultural Policy and Practice combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

Fashion offers Designing Fashion, taught by the Department of Design (subject to approval).

Media and Communications offers Either an industry placement, assessed by placement report, or an industry contextual module: Media Landscapes.

Music offers Sector overview of Music industries (a) combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

(ii) Internship

You will undertake an internship within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, such as computing (games and entertainment), to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'.

The programme will also equip those who wish to work within organisations that develop the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses with the capacity to flourish in a variety of contexts.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

The Fashion Pathway of the MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

During their training in Paris, students benefit from the experience of specialists from many sectors of the industry (public policy-makers in culture & tourism, retail travel sales directors & operators, managers of operations, public relations managers of touristic groups, sales directors, cultural heritage managers, CEO of private foundations & heritage organizations, prestigious hotel & restaurant managers, hospitality, tourism, cultural, directors of trusts for heritage preservation).

Workshops, lectures, visits to tourism sites and study trips within France provide students with hands-on experience and networking possibilities.

Students will hone the cultural and commercial skills required for developing and managing historical and cultural sites.

Structure

The academic year is made up of 3 trimesters:

2 trimesters of classes (September-December/ January-March) and one trimester of professional experience in the form of an internship (April-June).

During the last two terms, students will work on an individual professional project that they will present in front of a jury in validation of their diploma “Titre I”: Cultural Project Manager, accredited by the French State.

Group coaching sessions are organized to accompany students in the development of this professional project. The Academic year consists of 500 hours of classes over a 24-week period and a 3 month internship.

1st Term: Cultural Entrepreneurship, Marketing Tourism/Heritage Products, Strategic Management, Business Development Strategies, Implementing seasonal touristic programs, Targeting your audience, , Coaching sessions.

Overview

Half of the programme is made up of English for Academic Purposes modules, concentrating on different areas of language development, made up of:

Two further modules consider interdisciplinary themes and integrate academic content with language and study skills development. These modules provide a useful background for students in European intellectual approaches and some key theories of relevance to a range of academic disciplines.

You will study three modules on the programme over two days.

You choose one 'Shared Module', and then you take the Management and Professional modules which are broken up into Business Planning for Arts Organisations and an Internship.

The Shared Modules will allow you to continue to develop your understanding of a creative practice, or a specialist area of management. This module, therefore, comprises studies in one area of creative practice eg. Music, Theatre and Performance, Visual Arts, Entrepreneurship, or Cultural Diplomacy. (For some modules it will be necessary for a student to have a background in the area they wish to study as they are primarily concerned with the discipline rather than its administration/management – for example in music).

Summer term

Taught one day a week, you will have lectures and seminars that cover contemporary arts management issues such as: copyright and performing rights; touring; cultural leadership and diplomacy; and further develops some areas introduced earlier in the year, such as arts and tourism. During the term there are also timetabled sessions for individual tutorials relating to your dissertation.

UNESCO

aims to impart the necessary competencies and skills in the conservation and promotion of World Heritage Sites and in the conceptualization of sustainable projects designed around a wide spectrum of cultural activities in the fields of natural and cultural heritage, creative industries, museums and tourism. It explores the economic, social, institutional and legal considerations that govern the categories of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
It also emphasis strategic management competencies for the preservation and promotion of these sites as well as monitoring the efficacy and adequacy of site management plans and associated cultural projects.

The Master has a strong international faculty including Professor Walter Santagata from University of Turin, Professor David Throsby from Macquarie University, Professor Allen Scott from UCLA, Professor Andy Pratt from Kings College, Professor
Françoise Benhamou from University Paris III, Professor Xavier Greffe from University Paris I-Sorbonne, and Professor Helmut Anheier from Heidelberg University. Officials from UNESCO, the World Bank and the ILO also teach on the Master.

CURRICULUM OF THE MASTER

The Master is divided into three major learning cycles. The first cycle consists of distance learning modules supported by a tutoring service. The second cycle is a face-to-face learning period that will be held in Turin, Italy, at the International Training Centre of the ILO. The third cycle is a research and study period during which the students may attend internships and are expected to finalize their final projects.

MODULE 1- Distance learning.

The introductory distance learning phase of the course lasts 10 weeks and is tutor-assisted. It includes two foundation modules on Cultural Heritage and Economic Development and the World Heritage System and Heritage Management.

MODULE 2- Culture and Economic Development

This module will introduce the participants to the following topics:
• The value chain of cultural and natural sites;
• Cultural capital and the theory of sustainable development;
• The role of culture in local development;
• Cultural and natural districts, property rights and sustainable economic development;
• Governance and cultural policies in cultural/creative industries;
• Micro enterprises, local entrepreneurship and micro fi nance;
• Gender-related economics; International organizations and cultural projects;
• Culture and natural resources as a strategic engines for local development.

MODULE 3 - Project Management in the Cultural Field

This module is intended to upgrade participants’ competences in the disciplines of project cycle design and management. . Ample opportunity will be given to the participants to practice the development of the project logical framework and project appraisal techniques. The role of international development agencies in promoting cultural initiatives will be explored, including their respective procurement guidelines and project supervision procedures.

MODULE 4 - Cultural Sectors and Creative Industries

This module investigates the main cultural sectors that come into play in cultural policies, namely:
• Management of museums;
• monuments and archaeological sites;
• Performing arts;
• Creative and Cultural industries;
• Economics of cultural tourism;
• National Parks and Protected areas.
Particular attention will be devoted to the role of International Agencies that deal with cultural programmes including the presentation of the relevant UNESCO Conventions

MODULE 5 - Tools for Strategic Planning and Evaluation

This module explores the tools needed for planning, management and evaluation of cultural resources, focusing on:
• Management Tools.
• Strategic Assessment and Monitoring.

MODULE 6 – Home research and study

This dynamic MSc course is designed to equip you with a specialist and in-depth understanding of entrepreneurship. The course draws upon the highest level of theory and practice in this field and builds on the extensive research and teaching expertise of academics within the School of Management.

Our units in specialist entrepreneurship subjects are designed specifically for their relevance to contemporary entrepreneurship research, policy and practice. Our course is further enriched by the knowledge and expertise shared by our visiting speakers which include entrepreneurs running successful and in some cases highly innovative SMEs and large corporate organizations.

We aim to provide you with some of the key skills and knowledge required to develop your own projects, whether it be starting a new organization or developing an entrepreneurial project within an existing organization, in the public, private or voluntary sectors.

Course content and structure

You will study six core and two elective courses over the first two terms. In the summer term you will complete a dissertation analysing an issue pertaining to the field of entrepreneurship in depth.

Core course units:
- Introduction to Entrepreneurship
This course will develop awareness and understanding of various aspects of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ventures with reference to both theoretical underpinnings and applied and public policy measures. The themes which are covered include:
- economic approaches to entrepreneurship
- sociological & psychological approaches
- habitual entrepreneurs
- family firms
- outcomes: enterprise barriers, growth & performance

- Business Opportunities, Ideas and Planning
The aim of this course is to introduce you to the basic theories and practices related to business planning and the entrepreneurial start-up process. Particular, emphasis is given to:
- the discovery of business opportunities
- the development and assessment of business ideas
- the formation of founding teams, and the preparation of a business plan

- Corporate Entrepreneurship
In this module you will learn to critically evaluate corporate entrepreneurship, exploring the strategic and organisational models behind new venturing, innovation and strategic renewal.
In doing so, examine both large and small company perspectives in the management of new business opportunities.

- Entrepreneurial Finance
This course offers a blend of applied finance with appropriate theoretical underpinnings. More specifically there is a strong emphasis upon the following:
- entrepreneurial value creation, understanding financial statements and value techniques
- the range of sources of finance available
- increasing awareness of the various Government initiatives to assist SMEs and enterprise

- Entrepreneurial Marketing
You will cover key topics in marketing with a concentration on perspectives of small organisations with limited resources, and entrepreneurial organisations as follows:
- selling & negotiating
- market analysis & customer segmentation
- consumer behaviour
- creativity & innovation
- leveraging limited marketing resources
- customer relationship management
- brand building

- Dissertation Preparation and Research Methods
This unit will help you prepare for your dissertaiton. You will:Recognise and critically evaluate approaches to management research and the assumptions upon which they are based will:
- equip you to make justified choices as to appropriate quantitative/qualitative research methods for data collection and subsequent analysis
- be able to conduct research; evaluate primary and secondary data sources in a systematic and critically reflective manner
- evaluate potential limitations to research investigation and applications and develop a coherent and appropriate research proposal, recognising the ethical implications of research investigations and their impact upon findings.

- Dissertation
The dissertation provides an excellent opportunity to analyse an issue pertaining to the field of entrepreneurship in depth and is written over the summer months. By the end of the dissertation, you will be able to plan and manage a project, define aims and objectives, identify appropriate data sources and collection methods, be aware of and deal with potential pitfalls, execute a dissertation plan, and construct an effective argument.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- a systematic understanding of current issues in entrepreneurship, informed by the forefront of the discipline and area of professional practice

- an in-depth and critical understanding of the entrepreneur, the entrepreneurial process, and the entrepreneurial event itself

- the ability to evaluate critically the relevant academic literature and gain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts in entrepreneurship research

- the ability to evaluate opportunities for developing new and innovative projects and an awareness of the different forms of support available to entrepreneurs

- an increased ability to shape business ideas and structure them into a plan of action

- an appreciation of the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders and their impact on shaping the entrepreneurial process

- transferable organizational skills including working to deadlines, prioritising and delegating tasks, organising meetings and work time.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework (individual and group projects), examinations and a dissertation.

Employability & career opportunities

Our graduates are highly employable and, in recent years, have entered many different entrepreneurship-related areas. Graduates may find employment in existing businesses – i.e. large/multinational organisations (e.g. in product development/research) or in small-to-medium sized organisations (e.g. in business planning, growth, and operations/strategic management); they may create new businesses; they may work in areas pertaining to business support and advice (business planning and incubation, financing, skills training, firm internationalisation); in entrepreneurship policy (promoting innovation and enterprise development); or in entrepreneurship research and education.
