This course has been running for more than forty years and is recognised as providing a good grounding for students interested in the management, engineering and planning of transport infrastructure. It takes students from a wide range of relevant backgrounds.
The emphasis of the course is on current methodology and practice to improve your employability with engineering and planning departments of local and central governments, passenger transport executives, and transport consultants.
This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.
Transport engineering modules relate to traffic engineering and transport systems design. Transport planning modules consider policy (such as reducing car dependency), travel demand forecasting and appraisal. If you have a civil engineering background you can elect to take an optional module in transport infrastructure design as an alternative to the extended modelling and appraisal work.
The course is supported by field surveys, seminars and studio work, allowing students to experience a range of relevant computer packages and methodological approaches.
You are also required to produce a dissertation with the close supervision of an expert academic member of staff.
This course may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The part-time course enables candidates who would not normally be able to obtain a year’s release from employment to also study in depth and is used by some employers as part of their formal graduate training programme.
The course combines formal lectures and seminars with extensive coursework including transport planning studio work, traffic survey projects, appraisal assignments and statistics tutorials. The teaching panel includes visiting specialists with expert knowledge of specific topics.
You will be exposed to a range of relevant transport software.
Part-time students study the taught modules over two years on a day-release basis (currently Thursdays)

Research in this Centre is focused into four main themes, aligned with the core elements of the civil engineering curriculum: Structural Engineering, Transport Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulics. The aerospace industry is at the forefront of modern engineering and manufacturing technology and there is an expanding need for highly skilled chartered Aerospace Engineers.
If you are looking to pursue a career in aerospace engineering this course will enable you to apply your skills and knowledge of engineering devices and associated components used in the production of civil and military aircraft, spacecraft and weapons systems.
This module has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. On graduation you be able to work towards Chartered Aerospace Engineer status which is an independent verification of your skills and demonstrates to your colleagues and employers your commitment and credentials as an engineering professional.
The course will be taught by a series of lectures, tutorials, computer workshops and laboratory activities.
Some modules will include a structured factory visit to illustrate the processes and techniques and to enable investigations to be conducted.
Engineers from the industry will contribute to the specialist areas of the syllabus as guest lecturers.
The coursework consists of one assignment, and two laboratory exercises.
Mechanical Lab – This lab is used to understand material behaviour under different loading conditions and contains a tensile test machine and static loading experiments – typical laboratory sessions would include tensile testing of materials and investigation into the bending and buckling behaviour of beams.
Aerodynamics Lab – Contains low speed and supersonic wind tunnels – typical laboratory experiments would include determining the aerodynamic properties of an aerofoil section and influence of wing sweep on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section.
Composite Material Lab – This lab contains wet lay-up and pre-preg facilities for fabrication of composite material test sections. The facility is particularly utilised for final year project work.
Control Dynamics Lab – Contains flight simulators (see details below) and programmable control experiments – typical laboratory sessions would include studying the effects of damping and short period oscillation analysis, forced vibration due to rotating imbalance, and understanding the design and performance of proportional and integral controllers.

Applied Computing focuses on the next generation of interactive systems that place humans at the focus of the technological development. Adopting a multidisciplinary real-world approach, students have to spend a substantial amount of time working in group projects to develop a variety of systems ranging from interactive online services to games and mobile applications, with a strong focus on innovation and design.
Artificial Intelligence focuses in various fields of AI, such as machine learning, machine vision, and data mining. This specialisation provides students with a solid theoretical understanding and practical skills on processing and analyzing digital data and the ability to create intelligent solutions to real world problems with modern AI techniques.
Computer Engineering focuses on both hardware and software aspects of computing with emphasis on embedded system development. In this specialisation, students also study signal processing and its applications, and work with projects on modern signal processors and embedded computers. The specialisation gives the students a good basis to work with Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

This Master’s programme is provided by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and students are strongly encouraged to work closely with research groups in the faculty that are international leaders in their fields. The Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) is renowned world-wide for its 35 years of expertise in computer vision research. The Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP) has created a unique research environment for Ubiquitous Computing including multitouch wall-sized displays, smartphone sensing middleware and sensor networks. Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) is a fusion of expertise from the fields of computer science and biology. During the studies the research groups provide students trainee and master’s thesis positions, with the possibility to continue as a doctoral student, and even as a post-doctoral researcher.
The programme will provide the graduates with sufficient skills to work in a wide variety of positions offered by research institutes and companies mainly operating in the field of information and communications technology (ICT). There are plenty of approachable staff and lecturers to seek advice if you are unsure. There is continuous mentoring while completing dissertations, with supervisors engaging well with students and aiding them in making it more manageable. You learn to develop a pragmatic public health philosophy for family healthcare and an evidence-based skill set applicable to the challenges of contemporary practice.
To meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, your studies consists of 50% practice and 50% theory (alongside 100% attendance). We structure the postgraduate diploma to reflect the important balance of the practice elements, which are designated practice days or work-based learning. A 10 week consolidated practice block (in semester 3) enables you to work independently while remaining under the supervision of a practice teacher. The theoretical elements involve a mix of learning approaches including self-directed study days.
Another key aspect of your studies is to develop an understanding of the levels of accountability and responsibility you take on in these roles. You learn how to ensure public protection is developed to deliver safe and effective health improvements to individuals, groups and communities.
There are many opportunities on the course to share learning from your peers and other disciplines from across the primary /community care teams and services that work with children, young people and families.
When you start to put what you have learnt into practice, you benefit from strong partnerships with health, education and local authority organisations in the region.
The modern and diverse placements you go on are designed to meet the changing needs of children, young people and families, and may include placement with social services, education and a variety of organisations from the voluntary sector – foster collaborations with those that work alongside health visitors and school nurses.
You also complete a research-based module which provides a building block for further study from the exit award of PgDip to MSc qualification. The learning from the research module equips you to use policy and research to underpin and develop innovative practice and gives you the skills to frame a research question, take empirical research and write up an academic dissertation. If you successfully complete the PgDip, you can at a later date (pending additional funding and study) undertake a 60 credit dissertation module and gain an MSc qualification.
