Your international study visit to a European organisation gives you the opportunity to develop your international perspective.

Flexible study

Core modules will give you thorough knowledge in each key business discipline. You will then have the opportunity to tailor your MBA through a choice of specialisms and option modules.

Our full-time MBA take a year to complete (typically three sessions per week over one year) but it can also be studied in blocks, or on a part-time basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

Writing & Producing Comedy commences in January each year. Students are taught by the renowned comedy producer and writer BILL DARE supported by guest sessions from the people responsible for some of the UK’s most iconic UK shows including Peep Show, Father Ted, Have I Got News for You, Spitting Image, Horrible Histories and Green Wing.

The course is part-time (one evening a week and occasional Saturdays) over eighteen months and is delivered in central London. You will be expected to spend at least 8 hours a week working on assignments for the course. You will leave the course with a portfolio of material developed during the course, this could include a ten-minute taster tape of an idea you have developed, or a full script and some sketches and one-liners.

Why Study GIS?

The benefits of GIS are increasingly recognised within government, business, education and the voluntary sector, and the applications of geospatial data technologies are steadily growing. Using GIS, it is possible to combine data from a broad range of sources and in a variety of formats, such as paper and digital maps, routinely collected administrative data, censuses and population surveys, satellite imagery, aerial photography, GPS tracking and surveys, LiDAR and crowd-sourcing. The uses of GIS are very diverse, and include mapping, spatial analysis, planning and decision-making within a wide range of disciplines and sectors – common examples include environmental management and conservation, resource management, emergency service planning and humanitarian assistance, health care provision, land use planning and urban development, the utilities, transport, geo-demographics, mineral extraction and retail analysis. Increasing uptake of GIS and associated techniques and technologies means that there is a growing demand for qualified personnel who have the skills to manage spatial data effectively. Strong industry links help ensure that our course is relevant to the needs of employers.

Course Summary

The course is designed to help people gain understanding and experience of GIS concepts, functionality and applications. Content focuses on the representation, acquisition, management, manipulation and analysis of spatial data. It also includes modules on remote sensing, spatial databases, web-GIS and GIS in the commercial environment. Additional optional modules include GIS work experience, spatial analysis and modelling, GIS for environmental management, and Customising GIS.

In addition to acquiring substantial theoretical knowledge of the subject, you will gain extensive practical experience using a variety of software, focusing primarily on ArcGIS but also including ERDAS Imagine, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MySQL, OpenLayers, Geoserver, QGIS, Excel, SPSS and a number of GIS extensions and plug-ins. One of the core modules provides experience of web-based programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, whilst an optional module in customising GIS applications introduces Esri’s ModelBuilder and the Python programming language.

After successfully completing the PgDip modules, you may transfer to the Masters part of the programme. This requires the completion of a substantial independent research project, written in the form of a research journal article (which may, with agreement of your supervisor, be submitted for publication).

As part of the course resources, you will be provided with a free copy of ArcGIS, the remote sensing package ERDAS Imagine, and the data analysis package SPSS.

Work placement / study abroad

Gaining experience in the workplace and being able to apply academic learning within that context is very beneficial for students preparing to enter the workplace, so we offer the option of undertaking a GIS Work Experience module to full-time students. This entails working within an organisation for 2.5 days per week over a six-week period. Placements (which are unpaid) may be in the public sector, private companies, charities or education. Students who take this module find it extremely helpful for both their professional and personal development and refer particularly to benefits such as broadening their technical skills, gaining experience of team-working and of independent problem-solving, improved confidence and of learning about the geospatial industry and employment through exposure to real-world applications of GIS.

Part-time students who are in GI-related employment may opt to undertake the GIS Workplace Project.

Career options

GIS and geospatial technologies underpin a rapidly growing, multi-billion dollar industry, and are becoming increasingly mainstream within both the public and private sectors, resulting in a need for graduates who have a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Graduates of this course have secured employment in a variety of GIS-related roles worldwide, in GIS positions including technicians, analysts, scientists, surveyors, data specialists, mapping officers, consultants, project managers, development, sales and marketing, customer support, GIS training, lecturing and research (including funded PhD projects). The breadth of potential uses of GIS ensures a great diversity of job opportunities; for example, our graduates have found employment with mapping agencies, GIS and SatNav companies, environmental consultancies, ecological and marine resource management and environmental agencies, renewable energy companies, forestry, fisheries, town planning departments, heritage agencies, health and emergency services, housing authorities, local government, aid agencies, countryside recreation, rural development, retail analysis, utilities and infrastructure, Further and Higher Education, mining and mineral exploitation and the oil industry, among others. Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course progresses you towards Chartered Manager status – the highest level that can be achieved in the management profession.

Completion of your final project takes place throughout the summer after teaching finishes. You submit your project in October and receive your MSc award in December.

Our accredited Management MSc programme will prepare you for a wide range of careers in management. Our International Management MSc is designed to develop your knowledge in global and multi-cultural management.

This specialism also includes an extended period of international study at one of our international partner institutions in Europe or the USA. You also have the option of enhancing your existing language skills by studying in French, German or Italian through our European partners.

This course is part of our Management MSc programme. All students complete the same core modules covering the major functions of management until the end of term two, at which point you will be able to tailor the course to your individual strengths and career aspirations through option modules, the option of an additional semester to study abroad, a specialism in one of five areas or a continuation of a more generalist route with our Management MSc.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to an MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, form late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

Course structure

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. Throughout your dissertation, you will receive support from a supervisor who will help to guide you in your research.

Course structure

The course is composed of three phases:

Phase 1 - teaches the core subjects of finance, economics and research methods
Phase 2 - introduces specialist modules in finance and banking
Phase 3 - is the dissertation that draws together the learning from the whole of the programme, allowing you to develop your research skills and capacity for critical analysis while creating a specialisation in a particular field of finance and banking

Completion of your final project (dissertation) takes place throughout the summer after teaching finishes. You submit your project in October and receive your MSc award in December.

Dissertation

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a dissertation relating to finance and investment.

The dissertation will be 10,000–15,000 words long. It will address a financial markets problem which will require you to undertake research leading to implementable recommendations based on sound analysis and judgment.

Alternatively, you may wish to carry out a more theoretical dissertation relating to a financial markets topic of personal interest. You will receive help from your appointed dissertation supervisor who will monitor and support your progress. The dissertation is submitted in October.

Real-time trading room

As part of your course you will have access to modern computing facilities and specialist computing packages, for students on the Market-making and Investment Strategies module this includes access to our real-time trading room, fed by up-to-the-minute data from Reuters.

One of a handful of such facilities across the UK, our trading room sessions are supervised by guest traders and provide you with the opportunity to apply your skills to real markets and real data, and make use of simulation software to recreate the pressure of a trading floor.

We also invite guest traders to discuss curriculum topics, pass on their trading experience and supervise trading sessions.

Course structure

The course is flexible so you can choose to study via a combination of evening classes and weekly blocks, depending on your specific needs. Part-time study allows you to apply the tools, theories and techniques learned during the course to your workplace, bringing an immediate benefit to your organisation.

It is possible to complete the course in two years, but most students spread the workload over three years. Should your circumstances change, you may suspend your studies and restart at a later date. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

Syllabus

You can start your part-time MBA in January or September, sharing core modules with managers from all our MBA specialisms. Once you have completed your first core modules you can choose to specialise in Leadership, Knowledge and Innovation Management or Public Service Management.

You can also choose from a host of optional modules which will allow you to specialise in the areas of management you are most interested in. Most MBA modules can be studied in the evening or in weekly blocks.

International study visit

Your international study-visit to a European organisation would take place in the autumn or spring term and gives you the opportunity to develop your international perspective.

You will experience live case studies and meet senior managers while engaging institutions such as Belfast City Council (Belfast, Northern Ireland), Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (Epernay, France) and European Commission (Brussels, Belgium).

Flexible study

Core modules will give you thorough knowledge in each key business discipline. You will then have the opportunity to tailor your MBA through a choice of specialisms and option modules.

Our part-time MBA typically takes one day per week over two to three years, or on a block basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

Part-time students can choose the order in which they study their modules – to benefit their organisation’s specific needs.

Masters project

You will initiate, plan and carry out a project of strategic importance to your organisation. The design and interpretation of the project should draw on a sound knowledge of strategic and change management disciplines.

The project will prepare you for new and challenging situations of strategic relevance to your organisation. It will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to initiate and lead new developments, Additionally, it will enhance your ability to comprehend and integrate cross functional and sectoral issues, while drawing on sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable public service environments.

You will be allocated a supervisor to guide you through the project.

Through this course, you will build a broad portfolio of writing and research skills by combining academic and professional writing projects. We cover the history and theory of popular cinema in the US (classical and contemporary Hollywood), Europe and East Asia (especially Japanese cinema). Through modules on story development and research methods you will sharpen your writing skills in preparation for your dissertation project.
