Theory and action-based learning

This programme is closely associated with the research carried out within the Institute of Management Research, where the focus is on research into relationship management, institutional dynamics, decision making and innovative management. You will become familiar with both the theoretical and practical aspects of your special subject. The programme combines a thorough training in methodology with action-based learning: you apply the theory you have learned to concrete cases and learn to develop appropriate solutions. Our staff are highly research active, bringing their cutting edge research into their teaching. The work of our research centres, the Centre for Progressive Leadership (CPL) and the Working Lives Research Institute (WLRI), along with our excellent libraries, including our specialist Trades Union Congress (TUC) Library, inform much of the work of your lecturers and tutors and thus support your course; you are welcome to participate in their activities too. Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to – and test – students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

Professional accreditation

Students gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and you can apply for professional upgrading with the Institute linked to your professional experience to achieve Chartered Membership or Fellowship following successful completion of your programme of study. MSc Management has specialist pathways in Human Resources, International, International Entrepreneurship, Financial Analysis and Marketing. All students enrolled on the programme complete common core subjects in general management during Semester one, with modules in Semester two which allow you to specialise in your chosen pathway.

Course content

This programme is specifically designed to provide pre-experience career preparation and post-experience career progression opportunities to those from any disciplinary background at first degree level with the aspiration to enter or progress more rapidly in their business or management careers.

The programme will build on your existing capabilities from your first discipline and develop your conceptual and theoretical understanding of business and management issues, problems and opportunities.

As well as developing your research and reflection skills at postgraduate level, you will be able to link theory and practice throughout each module which include a variety of study methods such as case studies, business simulations, the completion of an applied research project related to real ‘live’ business issues and in some cases by means of a work based learning component.

MSc Management aims to increase your employability and give graduates a competitive advantage in the graduate management and trainee management jobs market.

The School of Management is located in the Gateway Building on the North Haugh which is set in an open green space close to the beach, halls of residence, sports facilities and the town centre. The Gateway has state-of-the-art lecture and seminar facilities as well as an extensive private study area for students. In addition, there is a public café on the ground floor of the building with views of the famous Old Course golf course and the North Sea.

Teaching methods

The taught elements of the programmes are delivered through a mixture of core and option modules, with each of the first two semesters having approximately 12 hours per week of staff / student contact. We use a range of delivery methods, including lectures, small group tutorials, workshops and seminars. Our average lecture size is 30 students, however, in some cases there will be seminars of 15-18 students or larger lectures with up to 100 students, which would normally be augmented by small-group tutorials. There is also a weekly series of lectures and workshops for all students focusing on research methods and other topics to help prepare for the dissertation. In addition to scheduled classes, you will have the opportunity to participate in our Masters Extra (MX)
Programme, which includes guest lectures from academics and business executives, specific sessions to enhance your career development opportunities and a range of corporate visits.

Compulsory modules:

Marketing Strategy: This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.

Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

International Marketing: The globalization of companies is the involvement of customers, producers, suppliers, retailers and other stakeholders in the global marketing process. International marketing reflects the trend of companies selling products and services across national boundaries. This module provides an overview of contemporary international marketing issues and trends as well as the international marketing planning process. On completion, students will be conversant with the theories, instruments, realities, debates and recent developments in the field, and be capable of researching, devising and applying solutions to key decisions regarding international market entry strategies and the development and management of global brands.

Consumer Behaviour in a Global & Digital World: This module will introduce students to the main theories which purport to explain consumer behaviour from the perspective of gaining an understanding of the consumer as an individual as well as how consumers are influenced by their cultural environment. Given that the internet has become an essential part of modern day life this module will provide students with an understanding of how consumer behaviour is impacted as a result of changes in the way goods and services are marketed and sold online. This module also examines the critical issues and trends whereby the internet has changed consumer behaviour spanning across traditional/geographic boundaries.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

International Marketing Communication: This module examines the processes by which integrated marketing communications (IMC) programs are planned, developed and executed. Individual communication vehicles included in an Integrated Marketing Communication plan are explored.

We are concerned with formal and informal ways of organising a wide variety of ‘enterprises’: private, public and social. We explore issues of accountability and ethics as we study these enterprises, by pursuing a number of intellectual themes that guide our research and teaching. These include the ethics of corporate governance, the impacts of investment, organising for creative outcomes, the internal management of organisations and the interactions between organisations and society.

Our research guides and informs our teaching in the School where we encourage our students to engage critically with this subject matter and develop their skills in analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application.

Location

The School of Management is located in the Gateway Building on the North Haugh which is set in an open green space close to the beach, halls of residence, sports facilities and the town centre. The Gateway has state-of-the-art lecture and seminar facilities as well as an extensive private study area for students. In addition, there is a public café on the ground floor of the building with views of the famous Old Course golf course and the North Sea.

Teaching methods

The taught elements of the programmes are delivered through a mixture of core and option modules, with each of the first two semesters having approximately 12 hours per week of staff / student contact. What you will study

The MSc Leadership and Management will give you the opportunity to explore the behaviours and the role of leadership and how it may influence the individual, the team and the organisation. Theories of leadership will be discussed and applied to your own leadership practice and that of your organisation.

Organisational leadership themes relating to power, politics, ethics, gender and cross-cultural leadership will be considered.

Significant leadership and management processes will be studied such as creating an environment for constant change; understanding and moulding organisational culture; building trust and a high performance team culture; managing and leading complex networks, alliances and partnerships; and the contribution of Human Resource Management.

We will also explore new and cutting edge approaches to leading including critical studies that have questioned the nature and necessity of leadership in organisations.

- Coaching for Executive Leadership & Management
Coaching is increasingly being used in companies as a means of supporting enhanced performance either as a general management approach or through the use of a formal external coach. This module will build your skills in relation to the use of coaching as a management tool for enhancing goal-orientated performance.

- Dissertation
You will be required to undertake an in-depth piece of academic work where you will critically evaluate literature and apply this to an original piece of research normally within your place of work. This will be of significant value to your organisation.

Learning and teaching methods

Course delivery is highly flexible and includes a mixture of classroom and work based learning, so you can fit your career development around your work commitments. Throughout the course you will undertake a number of bespoke work related assignments and gain additional support through our personal mentor/work based mentor scheme.

You will also be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning by completing guided reading, individual and organisational analyses, and written assignments.

Delivery is normally by blended learning using 3 day weekend blocks over two weekends on a Saturday/Sunday.
