On this course, case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice. You will learn about the major functions of management and their integration.

All students on our Management MSc programme complete the same core modules covering the major functions of management until the end of term two, at which point you will be able to tailor the course to your individual strengths and career aspirations through option modules, the option of an additional semester to study abroad, a specialism in one of five areas or a continuation of a more generalist route with our Management MSc.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course progresses you towards Chartered Manager status – the highest level that can be achieved in the management profession.

You will also be eligible for membership of the Institute of Directors, the longest running organisation for professional leaders in the UK. Membership provides you with access to the resources and the opportunity to network with leaders and executives.

The Management (Innovation) MSc will prepare you for careers in management consultancy, change management and some areas of functional management, for example in high-tech companies or the public sector.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). The management of the various activities associated with the practice of HRM, namely recruitment and selection, training and development, reward management employment law, equality and diversity will also be examined.

The course will also explore the nature of the organisation, the strategy and structure of multinational firms in different sectors (such as manufacturing, transport and professional services) will be analysed in cross-national settings in order to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments.

Structure

This course is taught from September to June and you will study a range of both compulsory core modules and a range of options. Following on from the taught stage you will undertake a project with support from their supervisor.

The Autumn Semester consists of three core modules, plus ONE optional module.

During the Spring Semester, you will undertake two core modules, plus TWO optional modules.

International Human Resource Management Project:

Upon successful completion of the taught modules you will undertake the International Human Resource Management Project.

The purpose of the project is to provide you with the opportunity to test the applicability of your new learning while under close supervision. It introduces you to the methodology of research, the systematic analysis of ideas, the problems of data collection and the presentation of ideas in a clear way. A further aim is to enable you to apply the knowledge, understanding, methodologies and skills learnt in the taught modules to individual independent research under academic supervision.

It also requires reflection on the implications for professional practice from an ethical, professional and continuous professional development standpoint.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

The School of Management is located in the Gateway Building on the North Haugh which is set in an open green space close to the beach, halls of residence, sports facilities and the town centre. The Gateway has state-of-the-art lecture and seminar facilities as well as an extensive private study area for students. In addition, there is a public café on the ground floor of the building with views of the famous Old Course golf course and the North Sea.

Teaching methods

The taught elements of the programmes are delivered through a mixture of core and option modules, with each of the first two semesters having approximately 12 hours per week of staff / student contact. We use a range of delivery methods, including lectures, small group tutorials, workshops and seminars. Our average lecture size is 30 students, however, in some cases there will be seminars of 15-18 students or larger lectures with up to 100 students, which would normally be augmented by small-group tutorials. There is also a weekly series of lectures and workshops for all students focusing on research methods and other topics to help prepare for the dissertation. In addition to scheduled classes, you will have the opportunity to participate in our Masters Extra (MX)
Programme, which includes guest lectures from academics and business executives, specific sessions to enhance your career development opportunities and a range of corporate visits.
