Our course enables you to meet the growing need for increased knowledge in cross-cultural communication. You will receive communication-focused training and develop expertise in cross-cultural communication. The course covers understanding how cultures and human behaviour reflexively interconnect.

Changing social conditions and circumstances require new ways of dealing with people, and fresh ways of interacting and communicating with people of other cultures.

There is an urgent need to improve our knowledge and understanding of the processes and issues involved in cross-cultural communication, and to discover how such knowledge can be effectively applied in everyday experiences.

What this means in practice is that we need to develop our knowledge of why and how communication 'works' and how and why it sometimes does not 'work'.

The course answers questions including how cultural background impacts upon successful communication and how language, thought, and behaviour are interrelated.

The Cross-Cultural Communication (CCC) MA is relevant if you wish to study communication, language and culture. It will also suit anyone intending to work, or are already working, in international and cross-cultural environments where communication is an essential aspect of that work, as for example:

The course is theoretically, practically and research oriented, and allows selection of one of six specialist pathways.

We have an international student cohort, with up to 35 countries represented. Through the research portfolio, you are equipped with the analytical and theoretical skills required to understand and analyse communication in a wide range of settings. You learn about research in communication and cross-cultural communication from a range of perspectives, including:

The Applied Linguistics Pathway is a specialism on the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. Objectives

The MSc in Cross Cultural Marketing & Negotiation is designed to allow students who wish to prepare for their future international careers, to acquire the theoretical knowledge and skills required to take up key positions in Marketing and/or Sales Management, both in France and abroad. In addition to courses given by international experts, students get to learn from exchanging with other participants, as the cohort welcomes applicants from the whole world (15 different nationalities on average). The programme is also a unique opportunity to extend their professional networks, thanks to Business Challenges and Junior Consulting Projects, where they develop closer ties among themselves. EM Normandie is located in Normandy, a region in North-West France, with a coastline opening on the English Channel. There is easy access by motorway or rail to nearby Paris, and several day and night ferries to England.

The Campus in Caen is located in the heart of a Science Park ( Technopole de Caen-Normandie - Plateau Nord), in the middle of the Université de Caen Campus II. Near the downtown area, the School is connected to the city centre by bus and tram.

A major university town, Caen has a beautiful historical inner city, only 30 minutes away from the D-day Landing Beaches.

What you'll learn

You’ll critically examine issues related to cross-cultural business behaviour, cultural dimensions, the key role of language, critical cultural awareness, and training for intercultural sensitivity.

You’ll discuss the works of major intercultural researchers and the critiques they have received in order to contribute to a more widening debate of intercultural theory and research.

This course gives you grounding in the global economic environment and the opportunity to specialise in an area of business. You’ll also study an in-depth introduction to research methodology, appropriate to undertaking research at this level.

With an international outlook, MSc Intercultural Business Communication attracts students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. By the end of the course, you’ll have a systematic understanding of intercultural business communication and competing theories of culture and communication.

Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to – and test – students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.
