Course Overview

The MA Heritage Tourism programme is available as a full or part time campus based programme as well as a part-time online programme. In part one of the programme students will study a number of modules which will enable them to gain a systematic understanding of the nature of heritage within the context of tourism development, marketing and management.

Heritage specific modules will engage them in discussion about the nature and meaning of heritage, representations and interpretation of heritage and issues such as authenticity and bias. Additionally, students will also develop an understanding of management principles and marketing applied to the heritage tourism context and will engage in critical thinking about contemporary global issues which form the backdrop to the discipline.

In part two of the programme, students can elect to undertake a dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal. Exit awards also include Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

Occupational hygienists are employed in a wide range of industries, including the petrochemical industry, manufacturing, mining, aero-industry, service sectors and the health sector. Many hygienists are also actively involved in research in a range of related fields. Currently, there is significant demand from large multinational companies, and there is a worldwide shortage of trained occupational hygienists.

This programme covers all aspects of occupational hygiene, and any student registered on it will be expected to complete a dissertation based on an occupational hygiene topic. A student on this programme may apply for research funding from the British Occupational Hygiene Society to cover costs associated with his or her research project.

On completion of the three core modules, plus the requisite 360 teaching hours, the nurse or midwife can record this study as meeting the standards for the qualified teacher and therefore register the qualification with the NMC.

The Biomedical Engineering group has a high international research standing with expertise in medical instrumentation, signal processing, biomaterials, tissue engineering, advanced design in minimally invasive surgery and rehabilitation engineering.

We have an informal partnership with SciencesPo Law, a leading law school in Paris where many courses are taught in English by prestigious faculty members and visiting professors. Students of the Queen Mary Paris LLM will be allowed to participate in certain selected courses and seminars of SciencesPo Law School, and vice versa. Assessment and core teaching for LLM students will still be provided by Queen Mary.

Programme structure

The LLM in Paris programme has two start dates, January (Spring Term), and September (Autumn Term), and can be taken on a full or part-time basis. As a rule, students who enrol on the programme on a full-time basis are expected to complete within one year and those who enrol part-time are expected to complete in two years. In exceptional circumstances, part-time students can complete the programme in up to four years.


The taught elements of modules are generally taught in the evening or as intensive blocks over five days.

Assessment

A variety of assessment strategies will be used. Taught modules are usually assessed by unseen written examinations, but in certain cases other assessment methods may be used, such as in class presentations, take home assignments, a combination of short essays and written examination or assessment entirely based on course essays. This is in addition to the compulsory dissertation or 7,500 word essay.

The Critical Thinking and Writing in Law Programme

Students will also benefit from English language support, as writing within a specific discipline at postgraduate level is a skill that needs acquiring. The Critical Thinking and Writing in Law Programme has designed a series of tailor-made hands-on workshops and online support that will allow students to deepen their understanding of the learning strategies required at postgraduate study, and which will help them improve their research and writing skills, and provide them with the confidence necessary to successfully meet the requirements and demands of the LLM. The Master of Environment and Management (MEM) program is a graduate degree of interdisciplinary study in either the Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc) designed to enhance strategic decision making in the environmental field. The program emphasizes teamwork and focuses on technical, policy, and system and sustainability issues to prepare students to become environmental professionals who are effective leaders and managers. This is a two year program made up of 3 three-week on-campus residencies (mandatory) combined with online learning.

Who It's For

Those from all levels of government, business, industry, consulting and non-governmental organizations who want to gain skills and credentials as leaders and managers to advance their current career or launch a new one. Students will pursue either a Master of Arts or Master of Science based on individual academic history and work experience.

Delivery Model

The Master of Arts/Master of Science in Environment and Management program consists of ten courses (seven on campus and three distance online through Internet technologies) and completion of a graduate thesis.

Distance courses are delivered through the innovative use of web-based technologies. Participants will draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments.

Normally, students will take one distance course at a time, for a period of 10 - 12 weeks. Each distance course will require an average time commitment of 10 - 20 hours per week.

Students should expect to work hard during the residency period. The typical classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Homework, readings, and team meetings are done outside of these hours. There will be some activities in the evenings, as well as during the typical workday. In addition to the educational activities there are planned recreational events.

In general, the student will have secured the necessary approvals to enter the program from their employer. In most cases the employer will, therefore, be the sponsor and will provide the student with the support and mentorship necessary to complete the program. In some cases, the sponsor may not be the employer of a student, but may be an organization interested in supporting the direction and receiving the results of the thesis.

There are many variations of the sponsor-student relationship, and this can be discussed with the Program Academic Lead to find a mutually-supported solution. The sponsor should be prepared to take "ownership" of the graduate's thesis project as a credible and defensible work which will clearly reflect the student’s own values, concepts and creativity, and which will have been subject to peer review.

The thesis topic should be of specific interest to the sponsor and in general, to qualify as suitable thesis project material, the topic must fall clearly into categories such as: a scientific study of a particular environmental issue or procedure; a detailed and scientifically-based case study of the environmental issues central to a particular area or resource industry; or, an evaluation of the social, political, economic, or legal implications of particular environmental policies, regulations, and practices.

Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:

A one-year Graduate Diploma in Conflict and Analysis Management is also offered.

Delivery Model

Online Learning
The majority of this program is experienced through online learning. Online courses enable you to meet the demands of work and family while studying. Using our web-based learning platform, you will access your reading materials, complete individual and group assignments, and engage with the rest of your classmates and instructors; online from anywhere. Each online course will be nine weeks in length, with a two-week break between courses.

Residency
During the course of your two-year program, you will attend two, two-week on-campus residencies. Here you’ll interact face-to-face with your instructors, cohort and team. You’ll have set class hours as well as homework and meetings outside of class hours, making this an intensive and rewarding time.

Completion Options

During the first year of study, all students will take the same set of courses. During the second year, students can select from the following options:

Thesis Track
Students taking the thesis track will be required to take a second research course during their second residency.

Course-Based Track
Students taking the course-based track will be able to continue their studies online during the second year, choosing from a suite of electives designed to appeal to students in all three Humanitarian Studies’ graduate programs.

Course-Based Track with Internship
Within the course-based track, students may choose to take a 6-credit internship. Students who choose an internship will gain field experience. This experiential learning will help students apply their theoretical knowledge by demonstrating their ability in a real-world setting, and documenting their experiences.

As conflict can occur in many arenas – within community, government, corporations, civil society, and international settings – our graduates are prepared to lead change within the fields of labour relations, community development, environmental management, international NGOs, and many other settings.

Flexible Admission

Normally 10 years of work experience, with a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in a leadership or management position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All flexible admission applicants will normally be required to take "Academic Writing and Critical Thinking" and obtain a minimum B+ (77%).

The program explores the theoretical foundations of disaster and emergency management as a growing field of practice and study. The program emphasizes an integrated and holistic approach to disaster and emergency management built on the understanding that disasters are more than hazards, and are products of the inter-relationship and mutual construction of the environmental, social, economic, and political spheres.
