Our MSc Social Psychology programme looks at a range of topical social issues through the lens of social psychological theories. It is concerned with the scientific study of how we think about ourselves and other people, and how we influence and relate to one another.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

As an MSc Social Psychology student you will learn theories, methods, and empirical findings in the field of social psychology, which are relevant to current social issues.

These include: prejudice and discrimination; the relationship between moral judgement and emotions; the study of how individuals and groups interact to construct and maintain identities; and how these are related to social change and influence in contexts such as family systems and romantic dyads.

The programme aims to provide you with an awareness of the historical and philosophical background of social psychology, an in-depth knowledge of contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches and research findings, and the ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative research in the field.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

- Psychological research methods
You'll be introduced to a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods used by psychologists. You'll consider ethical principals and issues that surround experimental design. During lectures the conceptual backgrounds to research methodologies will be discussed. Seminars and workshops will allow you to put skills into practice using statistical software and SPSS.

- The psychology of learning and memory
You'll explore development from infancy to adulthood through three themes. Firstly, how we gather and process information from the world around us, covering perception and attention processes. Secondly, how we use this information to act in the world, highlighting the ways in which we learn from the information that we have gathered from our environment. Thirdly, how we remember what we have experienced, covering the cognitive and biological machinery underlying short-term and long-term memory structures and how our socio-cultural milieu influences these processes.

- The psychology of feelings
You'll explore the interdependence between feelings and human behaviour. You'll identify and describe how and why humans have feelings and identify the biological and evolutionary bases of feelings and emotional experience. You'll learn how developmental, personality and environmental factors affect feelings and emotions in the context of relationships with others.

- The psychology of behaviour with others
How and why we behave the way we do in the presence of other humans. The focus of this module is to understand what psychologists have contributed to understanding our social behaviours according to the real, imagined or implied presence of others.

- The psychology of thinking and communication
How we communicate with others, solve problems and make decisions. The module will help you understand the development of human communication, both cognitive and social. You'll learn what different psychologists think intelligence, how it develops and how it can be measured. You'll explore the internal and external influences on the development of reasoning and decision making.

- Empirical project (fast-track)
You'll design and implement a substantial piece of independent psychological research including a formal report. You'll be able to study an area of psychology that interests you and present your findings at an informal conference. You'll learn how to interpret research findings and place them within the relevant psychological literature

Employability

As most psychology graduates will go into a wide range of careers, there is no such thing as a traditional career path for graduates.

A majority of psychology graduates decide to pursue careers in other fields. However, psychology graduates leave with an almost unmatched range of transferable skills, from excellent written and analytical skills to an understanding of how people behave.

However if you do want to stay in psychology, then a graduate diploma – accredited by the British Psychological Society, together with an appropriate postgraduate qualification could lead you to a career as a Chartered Psychologist in clinical, forensic, educational or occupational psychology.

Personal Development Plan

We help you develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) where you'll monitor your progress and set study objectives and career goals. With guidance from your tutors you'll reflect on the skills learnt from your studies which will help you achieve the career you want in Psychology or a related field. Some of the items included in a PDP are a skills checklist and personal plan, CV and useful career information.

You'll be introduced to the PDP at the beginning of the courses and take part in various activities that introduce you to the many careers options in psychology. These include group work, careers talks and sessions, and one-to-one sessions with tutors.

A career in psychology

Everyday duties vary depending on the specialty – an occupational psychologist would work to maximise the performance from employees and increase job satisfaction at different organisations. A clinical psychologist works to make positive changes to their clients' lives and offer various forms of treatment.

Excellent communication and listening skills, as well as the ability to build effective working relationships are essential for Chartered Psychologists. Chartered psychologists in the NHS can earn £25,500-£34,000 a year, rising to £40,000+ with experience.

Career progression

Recent graduates from this course have gone onto roles such as Psychology Assistant, Social Worker and Sessional Worker.

Our Department of Psychology runs a voluntary work placement scheme to help students find and prepare for part-time voluntary work in areas related to psychology across a range of organisations.

Teaching and learning

The Graduate Diploma consists of a coordinated programme of lectures and seminars. The curriculum covers core areas of psychology (cognitive, developmental, social, biological, individual differences psychology and historical/conceptual issues) in an integrative fashion with parallel training in research methods and statistics. The programme culminates in an independent research project (supervised by a member of staff), which can be linked to your interest, professional development and/or employment.

- Study hours
The course is offered on a full-time or part-time basis. The full-time programme takes 18 months, taking three modules each semester. The part-time programme takes three years, taking one or two modules each semester (three modules per year).

Year 1 class contact time is typically 12-15 hours per week plus individual tutorial and independent study.

- Part-time
Year 1 class contact time is typically 4-12 hours per week plus individual tutorial and independent study.

The programme offers a social-developmental psychology training that will advance the careers of anyone who's interested in the people professions – diverse careers related to education, work, health, government and non-profit organisations.

Humans have a fundamental ‘need to belong’ and form relationships. Positive relationships lead to higher well-being, personal development and well-functioning societies, whereas a lack or dysfunctional relationships lead to poor psychological well-being, unhealthy development and conflict or violence within society.

The programme will teach you about the different psychological approaches to studying social relations in children, adolescents and adults, drawing from different areas of study within psychology (eg social and personality psychology, developmental psychology, educational psychology, clinical psychology, social neuroscience).

These approaches are relevant to anyone interested in understanding social relations between individuals (ie families and friendships) and social groups within a variety of settings (eg schools, the workplace, social movements). The MSc Social Work is an accelerated programme for applicants who already have a first degree and want to embark on a career in social work; the course will fully prepare you for a professional career in the statutory or voluntary social care field.

This Masters degree runs in close partnership with local social care agencies and local authorities based in inner and outer London boroughs. Department research and industry highlights

Course content and structure

The MSc in Social Work is a two-year course that runs over two academic years, and is based at Royal Holloway’s Egham campus. The course is full time and students are expected to attend from 9am - 5pm, both in College and while on placement. The course integrates theory, research, policy and practice in social work, and the academic and practice programmes run concurrently.

- Course structure and organisation
In the first year you'll attend College four days a week during the first term. In the second term you are on placement (70 days) from Monday to Thursday and in College on Fridays. The placement continues in the third term. There are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College.

In year two you'll attend College on Mondays and Tuesdays and are on placement (100 days) the rest of the time. Again there are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College. Social Policy for Social Workers: gain an understanding of social policy issues related to social work.

Human behaviour in the social environment: gain knowledge about psychology in relation to working with service users.

Child observations: develop observation skills that are relevant to social work with all service user groups.

Theories and knowledge for Social Work practice: gain knowledge of theories and approaches used to understand how to work with service users.

Law for Social Work: learn about law relating to working with services users.

Critical Social Work: issues relating to working with service users and about different service user groups e.g. adult and child safeguarding, assessments, working with asylum seekers, substance misuse, working with resistant service users.

FUNDING

Funding is now linked to continuation funding for a PhD – that is, successful applicants to the Economic and Social Research Council will be given a grant for the MSc year and then further support (subject to satisfactory progress) to enable them to undertake a PhD.

Occasionally students receive financial support from industry through sponsorship. This would involve students undertaking a piece of research for their dissertation which would be of interest and value to industry or commerce, in return for which they will be given a grant by the commissioning company.

In the past, this sponsorship has ranged from £500 to £6,000. This is mutually beneficial to both the student and sponsor, and allows the student to undertake a ‘real’ piece of research that has practical or policy implications, whilst receiving a sum of money to assist with fees and subsistence costs.

ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY AT SURREY

The School of Psychology at the University of Surrey was the first in the world to establish an MSc in Environmental Psychology, in 1973. Since then there have been well over 250 graduates of the programme from over 25 countries worldwide.

It remains one of a few such postgraduate programmes in the world and the only one in the UK.

The MSc Environmental Psychology programme is part of a larger modular programme, thereby providing a flexible teaching and learning structure. The School of Psychology has a reputation for developing professional and innovative programmes reflecting contemporary societal concerns and employment opportunities.

Environmental psychology researchers have always enjoyed collaboration with other disciplines.

Current and recent research collaborations include an EPSRC funded research project on energy technologies in homes (REDUCE) with colleagues of environmental sciences (CES) and communications technology (CCSR), a DEFRA/ESRC-funded research programme on lifestyles in transition (SLRG) and a major ESRC funded research program on sustainable lifestyles (RESOLVE: research on lifestyles, values and the environment) both with colleagues from sociology, economics and environmental sciences.

We have long-established links with national and international academic institutions including the Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde, the Centre for Transport Studies at the University of West England and the Department of Psychology at Bath University.

RESEARCH

The Environmental Psychology Research Group (EPRG), of which students on the MSc in Environmental Psychology are automatically members, has been undertaking research for more than 30 years and has gained an international reputation.

Research undertaken by the EPRG is both ‘fundamental’ (that is, contributing to the development of the discipline and our understanding ofpsychological processes) and ‘applied and policy-oriented’.

Both government and business are concerned with effective policy development and delivery, and it is increasingly recognised that these can only be successfully achieved by informed evidence.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Recent graduates have progressed into careers in central and local government, undertaking policy-oriented research on a variety of environment behaviour (E-B) issues. Many of our graduates have become practice consultants, using their E-B research skills.

This could be a specialist E-B practice or an architecture, planning, design or engineering practice where graduates with a sensitivity to people-environment issues and a training in E-B research can provide an important and unique set of skills and expertise.

Those who have a background in architecture, landscape architecture, planning or design often return to their profession, but with an enhanced range of skills.

For part two of the Master’s programme students will complete their own research dissertation and submit a written thesis alongside a professional presentation of their research.

Social Research Methods Course Structure

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars, group-project work and individual study. All Social Research Methods students are assigned a Personal Tutor and Dissertation Supervisor appropriate to their chosen area of study.

The Social Research Methods course is made up of six 20-credit modules (Part 1) and a 60-credit dissertation (Part 2).

Our MSc Psychology is an advanced fast-track conversion course for students with an undergraduate degree in a subject other than psychology, or for those whose undergraduate Psychology degree was not accredited by the British Psychological Society.

This course combines the award of a Masters with eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society. The GBC is the minimum academic qualification required to work as a professional psychologist, so passing our course demonstrates that you have studied and acquired an advanced understanding in Masters-level study in psychology. Course structure

We provide you with specialised knowledge of a range of theoretical and practical approaches to developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology, including an understanding of how research in developmental psychology can inform policy and practice across educational, health, forensic and clinical professional practice (eg research on language and reading development, social and emotional development).

You study four compulsory modules and two option modules. The compulsory modules are Advanced Statistics and Methodology (SP801), Advanced Topics in Cognitive Development (SP581), Advanced Topics in Developmental Psychopathology (SP854) and a supervised empirical or theoretical dissertation (SP998).

Assessment

The programme includes lecture, workshop, and seminar-based teaching, as well as practical demonstrations of modern methods for studying child development (eg behavioural techniques, eye-tracking, electroencephalography), and an individually supervised empirical research project. Assessment is mainly by coursework assignment (4000-6000-word essays), examination (for the Advanced Statistics and Methodology, and the Advanced Topics in Developmental Psychopathology modules only), plus the dissertation.

Careers

Our Developmental Psychology MSc graduates commonly go into the fields of health, teaching, or further education. Many of our graduates take up roles as assistant psychologists in the NHS with a view to becoming a professional clinical psychologist, or pursue doctoral study and academic careers at higher education institutions. Because the MSc Developmental Psychology programme is taught by academics and professionals, it offers students wide opportunities to pursue a variety of careers.

The programmes we offer help you to develop general critical, analytic, and problem-solving skills that can be applied in a wide range of settings. Masters degrees prepare you for entering a professional area, whether this is as a chartered psychologist, academic research (e.g. PhD study) or elsewhere. The MSc will train you to apply your thinking to examine the theories and practices that make up the professional knowledge in Psychology.

You will build on these practices to become, not only an independent researcher. Rather than just working within the key issues or debates in Psychology, you will be expected to examine the edges and boundaries of Psychology and understand how knowledge is constructed.

The flexible nature of the course also allows you to study an elective module in an applied area of your choice. All classes and activities will be done online and in your own time with the exception of a two hour weekly online workshop. The precise timing of the workshop will be negotiated with the student co-hort upon course commencement.

The modules will focus on Applied Psychology; using knowledge of psychology to understand real-world problems and create changes in areas such as education, the workplace, mental health and psychological well-being, counselling, physical health and illness, behaviour change, forensic and legal settings, sport and exercise, and social problems such as prejudice and discrimination.

Format

You will experience a supportive and structured learning experience, with access to a comprehensive online library of psychology resources delivered via the University's virtual learning environment CampusMoodle and plenty of opportunity to interact with tutors and other students. All classes and activities will be done online and in your own time with the exception of fortnightly online workshops.

Learning will involve online lectures, interactive discussion forums and virtual classroom sessions.

You will also receive one-to-one support from a specialist supervisor when you begin your empirical research project.

Assessment

Assessment methods include written coursework in the form of essays and reports, empirical research projects and a range of online activities.

Social work is a regulated profession. As a social work student you will be expected to register with the GSCC, the social work profession's regulator, and adhere to the standards set out in the Code of Practice for Social Workers.
As well as regulating individual social workers and students, the GSCC also regulate the performance of social work courses, the reports of which are published on their website, so you can check to see how each university is performing.

Course structure
Year 1 introduces core skills, theories and approaches for social work practice in its inter-professional context and fosters a critical understanding of key law, policy and human growth across the lifespan. Year 2 focuses on more complex and accountable practice together with the development of more specialised skills and knowledge. There is also a focus on research in social work and the critical use of evidence to underpin own practice.
Learning in practice is supported by periods of study at the university, by directed study (with a range of learning materials) and by small group practice tutorials facilitated by social work-qualified university staff.
Students are required by the General Social Care Council (GSCC) to spend at least 200 days engaged in practice learning. Each student will experience at least two practice settings, statutory social work tasks involving legal interventions and provide services to at least two user groups.

During your research, you are supported by a panel including a main and secondary supervisor. Your supervisors are individually selected for you based on their compatibility with your research interests. Typically, you meet with your supervisors more frequently at the initial stages of research than during the phases of data collection and analysis.

You receive training in research-specific and broader ‘transferable’ skills, including academic writing, career management and presentation skills. You also have the opportunity to train for an advanced teaching qualification (ATAP). The Advanced Statistics and Methodology module from our taught MSc programme is available for doctoral students that have not already completed an advanced statistics and methods course.

This BPS-accredited conversion course is designed for graduates who wish to pursue a career in psychology but need to acquire the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS). You do not need to have studied psychology to be eligible for this programme. However, you should note that it is an intensive course and requires hard work and independent study outside the contact hours – full-time study IS full-time. We welcome applications from graduates with upper second class degrees who have either completed a degree in another subject or who have insufficient psychology in their degree to be eligible for GBC.

Course content

You will take modules at Masters level in core areas of psychology, as specified by the BPS. You will also take one option module in psychology from a selection available within the department. We offer a work experience in psychology module as an option for those who would like to gain valuable experience in the work place. The content of the curriculum of the MSc covers the core areas of psychology stipulated by the BPS for GBC. This consists of Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, History and Philosophy of Psychology, Individual Differences, Empirical Project, Psychobiology, Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods, and Social Psychology. In all of the modules there is a strong emphasis on critical evaluation of theory and practice.

Associated careers

Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist. It is the prerequisite for progression to Postgraduate professional training in psychology and subsequent registration as a Chartered Psychologist working in any of the fields of professional psychology – including clinical, counselling, educational, occupational, and health psychology. It is a requirement for Masters and Doctorate courses in Psychology that lead to professional qualifications such as Doctorates in counselling, Clinical and Educational Psychology, and Masters courses in Organisational/Occupational Psychology.
