PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The traditional owner/operator model that has historically dominated the hotel sector has radically transformed in recent years. Meaning that a singular hotel may be owned, leased, managed and branded by separate parties.

This split between ownership and operations has resulted in a growing chasm of expertise between the owner and the operator of a hotel.

Our MSc in Hotel Investment and Asset Management will equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to bridge this gap and address the current and emerging “real world” challenges that face the hotel sector.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme takes a broad view of tourism and provides an opportunity to explore issues and problems relevant to a wide range of situations and aspects likely to be faced by tourism managers and other relevant professionals.

It gives an opportunity to develop academic skills and knowledge. At the same time it maintains a practical focus on the rapidly developing tourism industry. Its intensive but generalist approach aims to prepare students for a wide range of possible careers in travel and tourism.

It is designed to provide an appropriate base for employment opportunities in official tourism organisations, in transport, hotels, tour operating and travel agency companies, in government and other organisations where knowledge of tourism is important.

The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities, and takes an integrated approach to the relationships between the various components of the programme.

The programme also provides students with opportunities to work directly with industry partners through not only guest lectures, but also on a real tourism project through the Applied Dissertation initiative and during fieldtrips.

This is a two-year programme designed for postgraduates who wish to become social work practitioners. The initial qualification for social work is generic, preparing you to work in a range of settings and with a wide range of user groups. The curriculum framework, based on the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF), ensures the development of specific skills, common to all kinds of social work intervention.

You will get experience of working with two different service user groups in two different practice settings.

The academic and practice curriculum, associated learning outcomes and the award of MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work will enable you to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as ready and safe to practice social work. On successful completion, you will be able to enter employment as newly qualified social workers with a range of statutory and voluntary agencies and service user groups. At the end of the programme, you will have your own Professional Development Portfolio, which you can take forward into your Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE), which is the next step for a newly qualified social worker.

The MA in Social Work will:

Choose this part-time course if you wish to develop your expertise in approaches to caring for patients in emergency, acute and critical conditions. This course will enable you to adopt an evidence based approach to planning and delivering care.

The core unit, Principles of Emergency, Acute and Critical Care, takes a systems based approach and deals with contemporary practice related issues, including patient safety, quality of care and end-of-life care considerations.

The optional unit allows you to develop specialist knowledge, in either adult trauma care, burn care, pain management or leadership. Alternatively, you can complete the PgCert by undertaking the NMC approved course, Nurse and Midwife Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (V300) in order to extend the scope of your practice.

Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow you to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice.

The core unit, Principles of Emergency, Acute and Critical Care has three summative assessment points. The first is a 1000 word annotated bibliography critique from 5 articles/research papers related to the management of emergency, acute or critical, which accounts for 10% of your overall unit grade. The second is an unseen examination using short answer question to assess the taught element of the unit. This accounts for 30% of your overall unit grade. The third assessment is a case study, where you are required to reflect upon and challenge the care provided in light of current evidence and to inform future practice. This accounts for 60% of your overall unit grade.

Your choice of optional unit will determine the assessment tasks you undertake. These include unseen written examinations, case studies and portfolios of practice.

Assessment is supported in a range of ways including: comprehensive assessment briefs; use of formative assessment techniques (which are embedded within summative assessment tasks); through use of exemplar answers (including those previously submitted by students where possible); through rehearsing approaches to assessment tasks during contact sessions; through scheduled tutorials which focus on academic literacies including literature search, critique and referencing skills. You will receive feedback on submitted work within 15 working days and can discuss their work in scheduled tutorials and/or office time. You will also able to access central support services designed to support the development of study skills and academic writing.

Assessment is by coursework essays of 4,000 words and the dissertation of 8-10,000 words.
