This course is flexible in that it offers several entry routes, choices for modular study and appropriate academic targets. Those who have already completed either the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent, if APL requested) or the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Simulation Studies, may enter at Postgraduate Diploma Level. These participants would then successfully complete a further three 20-credit optional modules to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (120 M level credits). Normally these modules would be completed part-time within one academic year.

Participants wishing to progress to Masters level must include Module MDM 10 ‘Research Methods & Critical Appraisal’ in their choice of three. A 16000-word Dissertation (as well as a 3000-word draft paper for publication) in the academic field of clinical education completes the Master of Science degree (180 M level credits). This would normally be completed in a further year, but some students with busy NHS jobs find it can take up to two years to complete.

For those who have not yet taken any ‘M Level’ postgraduate study in this area, the normal route would be to take at least two of the the ‘PG Cert Med Ed’ modules in year 1 (MDM 28/140), and then proceed with the PG Diploma/Masters routes in years 2 & 3, as described above.

Course Structure

The format of assessment throughout the course is varied: some modules are assessed by more traditional 3,000 word written assignments, centred on a topic relevant to the student’s own practice or in-depth analyses of specific case studies or significant educational events. Others feature the development of specific educational tools (e.g. on–line learning or simulation-based assessment), focussing on more practical aspects of clinical education. Students will also develop a personal educational portfolio of about 5,000 words using an appropriate national professional standards framework i.e. Health Education Academy (HEA) or Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).The Dissertation module involves a personal research project and is assessed by a 16,000 word thesis plus a draft paper for submission for publication in an appropriate academic journal.

The MSc in Public Health course has been designed within a multi-professional, modular framework that draws on a wide range of disciplines.

The course combines a set of four compulsory core modules (Principles and Practice of Public Health, Epidemiology, Essential Statistics in Health and Medical Research, and Research Methods and Critical Appraisal) with a range of optional modules (eg Health Protection, Nutrition in Public Health, International Health etc) which allows students to focus on areas relevant to their work and professional interests. The research dissertation module provides an excellent opportunity to integrate study-based learning with a work-based research project improving students' competencies and skills to enhance their long-term career in public health.

The course delivers a solid grounding in public health theory and practice to provide a mechanism for analysing and instituting change in practice and to support public health leadership and registration. This is particularly pertinent in a challenging time of change and the course addresses recent moves in responsibility for the delivery of public health programmes. It is aimed at doctors, academic clinical trainees and other researchers across a range of fields. Robust education and training is provided in quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis methods.

Synopsis of module content:

Basic terminology used in epidemiology and research studies such as prevalence, incidence, sensitivity, specificity, false positive and false negatives.
Interpreting graphical representation of epidemiological and statistical data such as Kaplan-Meier Curves, Forrest Plots and Meta-analyses.
Calculations used in the assessment of research data such as relative risk, absolute risk, number needed to treat.
Basic statistical tests and their applications including t-Tests, ANOVA, Chi-Square.
Methodologies as applied to rheumatology research.
Fundamentals of evidence-based practice and its application in the clinical setting.
Establishing patient registers and the value of disease-specific registers.
Research into educational principles for both health care practitioner and patient.
Understanding what may work for the patient as well as the educator.>

Module 2 - Professional Project or Independent Prescribing Module
Professional Project

Aim of the module:

To develop an ability to critically evaluate areas of professional practice.
To critically appraise specific areas of clinical, research and organisational practice.
To develop skills in independent research and study.
To develop skills relevant to scientific publications.
Synopsis of module content:

The module will depend on the creation of a piece of work based upon a specific clinically related project relevant to the student’s practice.

This project may comprise:

Literature review and appraisal of the evidence.
Audit of practice including organisational or clinical.
Review and implementation of evidence-based practice.
Qualitative or quantitative research (formal research involving human subjects is not anticipated).
Case(s)-based and quality of service review with critical appraisal.
Case report, review of literature and organisational assessment.
On completion of this module the student should be able to:

Produce an extensive piece of literature which may be suitable for peer-reviewed publication.
Demonstrate an ability to recognise and implement good practice.
Critically evaluate practice and suggest improvements or change.
Incorporated knowledge of the research process in developing services appropriately.

Independent Prescribing Module

Aim of the module:

This module aims to prepare students, both academically and practically, for the role of independent prescribing. The module also meets the registration criteria for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Synopsis of module content:

Consultation, decision-making and therapy, including referral.
Influences on, and psychology of, prescribing.
Prescribing in a team context.
Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity.
Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to nurse prescribing.
Legal, policy and ethical aspects.
Professional accountability and responsibility.
On completion of this module the student should:

Describe the responsibility that the role of independent prescriber entails (and demonstrate and awareness of their own limitations and work within the limits of professional competence).
Apply and evaluate patient assessment skills (inc. clinical assessment, history taking) and consultative skills with patient/clients, clients, parents and carers in the context of prescribing/informing diagnosis.
Critically appraise and apply knowledge of drug actions, use sources of information/advice and decision support systems in prescribing practice to support prescribing decisions/informing diagnosis.
Explain and apply the relevant legislation to the practice of nurse/midwife prescribing and practice within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility.

Teaching Methods

Module 1 - Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal

MSc teaching methods for this module are similar to the PG Diploma course modules, however, it is run over 12 weeks.

Module 2 - Professional Project

To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course however much of the work is self-directed.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded on the student's journal by the student.

The MRes is organised by the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells & Regeneration (CHDSCR) which undertakes fundamental research into early development and stem cells, together with applied translational research targeting the NHS and patient benefit.

Through research projects totalling 32 weeks, you will develop a broad range of laboratory skills and work in different research environments. You will be supervised by internationally recognised academic researchers. In addition to providing broader training in scientific research, the course will develop your transferable skills including time and project management, public speaking, critical appraisal and scientific writing, thus aiding employability for a variety of careers.

What does this MRes provide?

During the one year, full time programme that commences in September/October, MRes students undertake taught modules in Research Skills in Biomedical Sciences, Stem Cells, Development & Regenerative Medicine, and Advanced Scientific Skills. What will you learn in the modules?

i) Stem Cells, Development & Regenerative Medicine module
Students are introduced to core concepts through a series of facilitator-led workshops focussing on key research publications. Students critically appraise primary research papers and develop the skills required to understand, critique and interpret research findings. Integral to these workshops is the requirement for students to present their thoughts and participate in group discussions with both their peers and academic facilitators.

ii) Research Skills in Biomedical Sciences (RSBS) module
A combination of taught and practical sessions are used to introduce students to the core concepts underlying statistical analysis and study design that support students in handling their own data and critically appraising data published by others.

iii) Advanced Scientific Skills module
A series of taught and practical sessions introduce students to additional core concepts used in Biomedical Sciences such as the analysis and critical appraisal of large data sets. In addition, key principles required to relay research to both a scientific and lay audience are introduced. Students write both a scientific and lay abstract for a published primary paper and give a research presentation suitable for a lay audience. Thus, students develop the skills required to communicate their research to both scientists and non-specialists.

iv) Research Project modules
In the two research projects, students are introduced to a range of laboratory skills gaining valuable practical experience of research methodology, experimental design, data interpretation, viva voce, scientific writing, oral and poster presentations.

What teaching and learning methods will be used?

A variety of methods are used including lectures, research seminars, small group discussions, journal club presentations, analysis of large data sets and in depth research projects which incorporate the evaluation and presentation of research findings within the field of stem cell biology. A range of summative and formative assessment methods are used to assess student performance. These include oral presentation, poster presentation, written assignments/critical review, viva voce, laboratory proficiency, analysis of large datasets, lay/scientific abstracts and preparation of a research proposal.

What are the entry requirements for this MRes?

The minimum classification normally expected for a degree entrant is at least a second class upper division (1st or 2:1) in Biological/Biomedical Sciences or a closely related subject from any approved University.

Qualifications from non-UK institutions must be of an equivalent standard to those of UK Universities. Before commencing the course, non-UK applicants should obtain an overall IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

Participants gain an understanding of public health issues and the various roles of all the professionals involved in both the statutory and non-statutory sectors.

Course structure
Integrated within the university's health and social science graduate programme, the courses utilise a variety of teaching and learning techniques, including drawing on the work experience of participants. It provides valuable cross-disciplinary experience through common modules shared with other courses in the scheme. Most courses are delivered intensively over one week.

Areas of study
Study includes the techniques required to undertake epidemiological studies, approaches to environmental impact on health matters, mechanisms of partnership working, and wider issues relating to the health of the population.

There are three core modules - Public Health: Meeting the Challenges, Research Methods and Critical Appraisal, and Epidemiology. Each module requires three separate full-time working weeks.

This two-year course draws on the expertise of six European universities at the forefront of public health education: Andalusian School of Public Health (Granada, Spain – for Spanish speaking students), Jagiellonian University of Krakow (Poland), Maastricht University (Netherlands), National School of Public Health (Rennes, France), University of Rennes (France), University of Sheffield (UK).

In the first year, you’ll receive basic training in public health. You’ll study in Sheffield or in Granada, Spain. In the second year, you’ll specialise in an area of public health practice in the Netherlands, Spain, Poland or France. The aims of the MRes Medical Research are to:
• Provide robust education on research to compliment and support research exposure and experience for academically gifted medical and dental trainees, and research registrars;
• Develop independent researchers of the future, able to compete for a Research Training Fellowship leading to a PhD and further postdoctoral research;
• Contribute to the NHS drive to develop the vibrant academic community essential for first class healthcare.

Academic Clinical Fellows at Brighton and Sussex Medical School will be automatically accepted on the course. Applications from other NHS research registrars, doctors in the pharmaceutical industry, and others employed in a setting where medical research is a core function of their day-to-day activity will also be considered. In order to maintain the high research degree completion rate of BSMS, non-ACF applicants will only be accepted if they can demonstrate: an ongoing research programme in which they are currently involved; award of a research grant; or employer support for a locally-funded research project intended for publication.

Course structure and content
The course requires 80 taught credits and a 100 credit research dissertation.

The taught modules (20 credits each) are:
• Research Methods and Critical Appraisal
• Epidemiology
• Essential Statistics for Health and Medical Research.
It is recommended that the final taught module be Evidence-Based Practice; alternatively, students may take any module from those offered by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex, with the approval of the Course Leader.

The dissertation (100 credits) requires a 16-20,000 word research dissertation which includes literature review, background, methodology, project management and governance, ethics, methods, results and discussion chapters. In addition, students are required to undertake a viva on their project, identify an appropriate journal for publication of their work and produce an article in the correct format to submit.

Students on the programme experience lectures, large and small group discussion and individual tutorials. To ensure that students are able to put their learning into context, each is employed in a setting where research forms a significant part of their activity. Students are encouraged to bring work-based difficulties and experiences to the group work to enhance the relevance of the content to day-to-day clinical and research activity.

Staff provide direction within the lectures and seminars with much learner autonomy evident in the group work and assessment. Learning is supported further by the use of StudentCentral and the usual visual aids and handouts. Students are expected to support their learning by the use and critical appraisal of primary sources of information.

Group work on the statistical module gives hands-on experience of working with, analysing and reporting data on computers as well as interpretation of worked examples from published and/or local research. Workshops on research ethics and governance are provided to support students through regulatory processes effectively.

Learning beyond the classroom comprises scientific, clinical and research reading as well as practical development and application of research skills. Students are expected to develop further academic, transferable, communication skills through robust scientific writing, presentations and written reports. Engagement with a research project at a very early stage is mandatory to ensure that autonomy in the whole research process of project management and governance can be learnt. Students are also given the opportunity to learn through teaching/facilitating on their chosen topic, particularly if research focuses on education.
