This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. It has been developed by academics and creative economy practitioners at Kingston Business School to help you respond to emerging trends and opportunities to realise value in the creative economy.

The programme is designed for individuals who come from creative industries, or have graduated in another discipline, including engineering and humanities. You will need a strong motivation to look beyond the traditional boundaries of your discipline, a readiness to participate in a start-up, and a willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary and experiential environment. You will work with students from all over the world and from different creative sectors. This diversity challenges you to think differently and exposes you to differing perspectives on creativity and business.

The programme now has nine generations of graduates and an active alumni network. Our graduates work in a range of creative and leadership positions ranging from freelance work in the creative sector, through to business ownership and employment in large innovative companies in the creative economy.

The creative industries are outpacing traditional industries both in the UK and the rest of the world. In the UK, the creative industries represent 5.2 per cent of the UK economy and provide 1.9 million jobs (DCMS, 2016). With the growth of the creative industries, the creative economy has grown at a rate faster than the whole of the UK economy, and was worth £133.3billion in 2014, accounting for 8.2 per cent of the UK economy (DCMS, 2016).

An increasing number of countries has now placed the creative industries at the heart of their economic development. This creates opportunities for professionals who understand the critical success factors for commercialising creativity, and are equipped with the mix of creative and business knowledge and skills.

What will you study?

This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. By the end of the programme, you will be equipped with an in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills required to successfully realise value in the creative economy context.

You will specialise and become closely involved in the practice of a specific creative industry through engagement with a real business in the creative sector. This will be the opportunity to experience practical work and realise value in a chosen creative industry:

You will also explore the process of collaborative creativity and examine what it takes to successfully develop ideas into innovative products, service and processes. The core of the programme is a real-life business experience; working in a team, you will start and run your own creative industries business in the supportive and risk-free environment provided by Kingston Business School. Our entrepreneurship experts will guide you through the process of designing and running your own creative business, which will help you develop your creative, managerial and entrepreneurial skills.

Assessment

Assessments are innovative and include a mix of individual and group project work and formal assessments, including essays, case studies, reports and presentations, role-play, games and simulations, plus the final Personal Research Project (maximum 15,000 words). Structure

You'll be supervised by a full-time member of staff, generally agreed during the preliminary discussions regarding your research with the ICCE Director.

The MPhil programme offers the opportunity for the student to continue their research to a PhD. PhD theses are up to a maximum of 100,000 words.

You should aim to complete and submit your thesis within the time-frame specified by Goldsmiths. This is normally three to four years for full-time students and four to six years for part-time.

A thesis for the award of MPhil may be submitted after two years of full-time or three years of part-time study. Registration can be changed from full-time to part-time status, and vice-versa, with the agreement of your supervisor. You'll be required to complete the appropriate form for change of status available from the Admissions Office or from the ICCE Administrator.

Research training programme

All students enrolled in the MPhil programme are initially required to attend a weekly seminar in research methodology conducted by the Goldsmiths Graduate School. These seminars are designed to bring together research students with diverse interests in a cooperative and stimulating environment.

Its objectives include training students for the Spring Review Week, written and oral presentations, preparation for upgrading procedures and publication of articles.

Assessment

Examination is by thesis and a viva.

How to apply

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. The choice of topic may be influenced by the current research in the department or the requirements of an external funding body.

If you wish to study on a part-time basis, you should also indicate how many hours a week you intend to devote to research, whether this will be at evenings or weekends, and for how many hours each day.

Your research proposal

Along with your application details, personal statement and academic reference, you should also upload a research proposal at the point of application.

This should be in the form of a clear, concise and coherent statement of the proposed area of research of at least five pages and no more than seven pages of A4 and should include:

1) A working title for your research project.

2) A clear statement about what you want to work on and why it is important, interesting, relevant and realistic. Detail your main research objectives; these could be articulated as hypotheses, propositions, research questions, or problems to solve. What difference do you think your research will make? Is your research achievable in the time allocated? (e.g. 3 years full‐time)

3) Some background knowledge and context of the area in which you wish to work, including key literature, key people, key research findings. Think about how your work links to the work of others in the same or related fields?

4) Some consideration of the methods/approach you might use. Describe how will you conduct your research? Will you use existing theories, new methods/approaches or develop new methods/approaches?

5) Some indication of the strategy and timetable for your research project and any research challenges you may face. What would be the main stages of your project and what would you be expecting to do in each year of your PhD?

6) A short list of the key references which support your research proposal. References should be listed in an appropriate convention (e.g. Harvard). Such references should be used throughout your research proposal to demonstrate that you have read and understood the work of others. Other relevant material that you are aware of, but not actually used in writing your proposal, can also be added as a bibliography.

FOCUS ON CONTEMPORARY SECURITY

Focusing on insecurity in the contemporary world, you will examine the nature of strategy and how it relates to both policy and action in a fast-evolving and volatile international system. This is a world where questions are being asked of traditional institutions and levers of state-craft. There is a pressing need for creative, disciplined thinkers able to turn their ideas into action.

The MA considers threats to national, international and human security, ranging from interstate conflicts to more diverse contemporary security challenges, such as terrorism, organised crime, resource denial and cyber security. You will investigate the drivers of instability, such as competition for resources in an age of increasing demand and financial austerity and look in detail at how the instruments of strategy, such as diplomacy and strategic communications, might be more effectively integrated.
You will learn how to design and manage strategic responses to crises, considering how decisions are made and the causes and consequences of miscalculation. This is not a war studies degree, but you will become familiar with the various forms of violent conflict, and learn through case studies, how the consequences are managed and, ideally, resolved.

STRATEGY IN ACTION

The way we teach this programme is unique. During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Innovation, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship program. Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY : A METHOD OF SELF MANAGEMENT BY THE STUDENTS

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. The course merges practical skills, with leading academic research surrounding areas such as business, marketing, consumer behaviour, branding and fashion theory – giving a solid platform for graduates to move into the industry or progress in their chosen career path.

MA Fashion Retail is designed to accommodate a range of student backgrounds, from those already within employment looking to add to their existing skills, to design graduates looking to expand their knowledge of branding and retail strategy, or even those seeking a change in career. What you will study

Students will benefit from an immersion into the contemporary fashion industry, with modules addressing both the creative skills and theoretical application necessary. The course will combine a creative focus with the acquisition of technical skills and professional expertise via experiential learning and the strategical application towards live and industry simulated briefs.

Selection of Modules include:

- Academic and Professional Practice for Fashion
This module is design to cater to students individual learning needs, whether that be focused on research into the fashion industry or towards research and academic skills required for Masters level study. Students will consider their own personal experience and future career aspirations along with a focus on creative digital visualisation skills and industry standard software.

- Fashion Retail Interactions
This module will explore the landscape of fashion retail to encourage students to engage with contextual understanding, looking into areas such as consumer behaviour, sales management, visual merchandising, buying, multi-channel retailing and marketing communication. Students can choose an area of specialism to produce a visual research book, demonstrating their skills in research and analysis.

- Fashion Retail Space and Place
This module will encourage innovative thinking as students question what retail is and what it could be in the future. Students will use industry standard 3D visualisation software to design their own retail space that will be focused on a specific market and consumer base, considering the store environment, use of multi-platform integration across all levels of fashion retail.

- Fashion Brand Design and Communication
This module will critically explore the nature of branding, with both theoretical understanding and creative and practical application. Students will be encouraged to select an existing fashion brand or retailer, researching fully utilising both primary and secondary research methods, before proposing an opportunity for re-branding or re-positioning of the brand. Students will utilise create software to produce promotional materials relating to their ‘new’ brand concept. This module is designed to run as a live brief with a brand.

- Strategic Fashion Retail Innovation
Students will be asked to think globally, exploring the impact of wider factors on the design of fashion retail strategies for innovation. Students will consider a consumer group in a specific marketplace and produce a strategy for international expansion. This strategy will be accompanied by creative promotional material to enhance students research and analytical skills, as well as their visual communication.

The final semester of the degree will include a 60-credit project, which will develop through one of the above modules. The final major project enables students to focus on their area of expertise, designing their own major project brief (with help from lecturers) that will showcase their advance fashion retail knowledge and design skills. Students will be guided on an appropriate project, before working with tutors to create an outcome that can be used as a discussion point in future interviews or exhibitions. Alternatively, students can choose an extended work placement, or reflection on their own work practice, to utilise work placed learning into their MA Fashion Retail.

Common Modules:
The Faculty understands the importance of a strong grounding in research knowledge and skills, enterprise and innovation as part of a balanced postgraduate education.

We also recognise that each student has different requirements of their postgraduate experience.

You can choose to study one of the following three, 20 credit common modules. Each of these has a different focus, enabling you to select the module that will be most beneficial to you.

- Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship
This module aims to develop your knowledge of the methods to identify, develop and manage enterprise and innovation in the creative sector. It will then help you apply this to your own entrepreneurial project.

- Research and Practice in the Creative and Cultural Industries
The focus of this module is on the development of research knowledge and skills, while also encouraging critical engagement with approaches to creative practice. You will also explore ideas, debates and issues in the creative and cultural industries.

- Research Paradigms
This module focuses on research paradigms and their theoretical underpinnings. It also looks at key conceptual tools drawn from a wide range of subject areas relevant to postgraduate research in the creative industries.

This is a creative, project-based course focusing on the dynamic between creativity, technology and business awareness. The course develops the critical and creative, and technical and professional skills necessary to advance practice and stimulate innovation in the fashion industry.

As an MA Fashion student, you will explore the boundaries of creative fashion design and develop your digital skills utilising a range of prototyping technologies. The course will challenge you to re-examine the underpinning methodologies and ways of working that characterise creative practice in fashion. You will be encouraged to challenge the boundaries of traditional fashion design, practice and manufacture, and explore the creative opportunities offered by technology and new ways of working.

Course structure

1. Technology issues – Within the technology issues unit students will engage with 3 to 5 week project cycles that will enable them to explore ideas and build on skills in interdisciplinary, cross disciplinary and individually negotiated projects. These units are structured to encourage students to engage collaboratively with fellow students.

2. Business and innovation – Taught during the term before the Final Major Project Unit, this unit helps students develop an understanding of business and innovative practices in the creative industries. It challenges and supports fashion design students in turning their ideas and skills into viable, innovative market propositions and business plans.

3. Research process – This unit supports students in gaining the research skills needed for the development of students' individual projects. Concept and prototyping – Allows students to further develop their skills, focusing on their chosen specialist area within fashion and pursue a single line of inquiry, idea or theory embedded in fashion and research and develop the concept.

4. Major project – For the Major Project, students will develop and manage an individual programme of enquiry and creative development in fashion culminating in the realisation of a final collection, fully informed by professional and industrial contexts and multi-disciplinary perspectives.

Simultaneously, entrepreneurial opportunities have never before been as great and diverse as now. For executives to operate effectively in this promising yet risky economic environment, they need to be equipped with a broad range of knowledge, techniques, and skills. Tomorrow's leading executives will have to combine know-how in the areas of strategy, innovation, organization and change management, and have profound knowledge of how to manage and control business from a financial perspective. They will need analytic and creative skills, to think and act as entrepreneurs.

Purpose

The Master in Strategy, Innovation, and Management Control offers a profound education to develop these necessary skills. The international oriented program combines theory, practice, and social and intercultural skills and bridges the gap between strategic management and entreupreneurship.

Format

Selected students have the possibility to gain a double degree at one of 4 renowned partner universities. All SIMC students can spend a semester at one of WU's 120 partner universities for graduate students.

The flexible structure of the program does not only allow students to study abroad but also makes it possible to individualize their acquired qualification. Therefore, students choose 4 electives from a broad range of 5 different areas.

First Year

In the first semester foundation courses provide the basis for an in-depth understanding of how companies develop corporate and business strategies (strategy development) and how they can translate their strategies into employee action (strategy implementation). The second semester is dedicated to the contextualization and integration of the program's core subjects. You are provided with the opportunity to apply and deepen the knowledge gained from the introductory courses in a comprehensive way.

Second year

Building on this solid foundation you have the opportunity to specialize by choosing four out of numerous electives and start to prepare and write your master theses. In addition, a business project is organized in cooperation with our corporate partners which offers the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real life problems or a garage course is offered which allows you to develop your own start-up idea.

The program's flexible structure allows you to spend one or two semesters of your second year of studies at one of our prestigious partner universities. For selected students we provide the opportunity to join a double degree program.

Apply your imagination by framing an original and personal research project and question existing assumptions and boundaries in one or more of the creative disciplines. Investigate your ideas through a series of real-world interventions and obtain feedback from end-users and key practitioners.

Content

MA Applied Imagination in the Creative Industries is of the Culture and Enterprise programme. Our learning and teaching approaches are based on the methodologies of peer learning, reflective practice and action research. Many postgraduate courses around the world make use of these techniques, but MA Applied Imagination in the Creative Industries places them at the very heart of its learning strategy.

We utilize a two-step strategy to enable you to develop and apply new creative knowledge.

Unit One: Imagination

During Unit One, you work in groups or teams, learning from each other, and forming genuine communities of practice where knowledge, skills and understanding are shared in an environment which closely resembles professional creative practice. The varied cultural, educational and professional backgrounds of our students accelerate the development and interaction of these communities.

Unit Two: Application

Unit Two further develops your grasp of reflective practice – the ability to evaluate and learn from your own experience, and to apply the understanding gained from such reflection to the future development of a project. Reflection is further honed through discussion with peers, tutors and external experts, as well as through the use of a diary or reflective journal. The planning and development of a major action research project – achieved by making planned interventions in the outside world – strengthens students’ contacts within, and understanding of, the creative industry of their concern.

Your Unit Two project becomes an individual creative journey. For each student the journey is unique in its scope and ambition, but should have the potential to place you at the heart of contemporary practice and debate within your chosen field of interest.
