The MA by Creative Practice is designed for professional practitioners, recent graduates and professionals who wish to update and re-establish their own personal development. The MA is based on an individually negotiated programme of practice and research rather than a pre-arranged programme of teaching. There is a strong emphasis on supervised independent learning, personal responsibility, reflection and evaluation. It is a practical course for the practical student.

Study Details / Module Information

The programme consists of four taught modules, one of which is formally timetabled and the others taught through tutorial contact. You must complete 180 credits to graduate with the MA and each module will be assessed. Assessment methods will vary and may include written papers, practical outcomes such as exhibitions, performances and presentations, market research and other aspects of professional creative practice.

- Theoretical Research and Professional Practice (30 credits)
- Negotiated Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Autonomous Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Creative Practice Final Project (90 credits)

Assessment for Theoretical Research and Professional Practice takes the form of three 3000 word written assignments, other modules are assessed on practical outcomes, supporting contextual work, marketing strategies etc. Negotiated Creative Practice and the Creative Practice Final also include a viva voce.

All staff teaching on the MA by Creative Practice are professional practitioners in their respective disciplines and research interests reflect this. Recent publications include chapters in books such as Introduction to John Godber Plays 3 (London: Methuen, 2003); conference papers such as Interventionist Theatre: Theatre in Conflict Resolution (University of Leeds, Bretton Hall, 2004); Living Place Project and its Impact on Regeneration and The Application of CAD/CAM in the Production of Abstract Sculptural Form, presented at the 2005 International Design Conference, Yunlin University, Taiwan. Staff also have works in a wide range of public and private collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and exhibit at exhibitions including Collect at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Music compositions by members of staff have been performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Members of Fine Art and Design staff held a group exhibition Staff and Alumni ’08 as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, as well as having solo shows in Liverpool and beyond and taking part in international sculpture workshops. Throughout the year, Visiting Professors Joanna MacGregor and John Godber contribute to events within the Deanery, including the annual Cornerstone Festival.

The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full-time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work.

MFA applicants should be able to demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth that an extended time frame can afford.

The choice between engaging in an MA or MFA programme of study will depend upon your prior experience and future aspirations.

We offer two routes of study through the MA and MFA:

Purpose

The Transdisciplinary focus is ideal for recent graduates of dance, performing arts or humanities, and dance professionals who want to develop and promote their creative ‘voice’ within a safe and supportive environment.

Format

The Transdisciplinary focus offers the opportunity to build your own dance Master's programme. With its open format and broad range of modules, you can specialise in areas of interest, develop your skills, and experience new insights through engagement in practice based research, including collaborative projects. Areas of study incorporate a diverse range of perspectives, including theoretical and philosophical underpinning of arts practice, visual and body-based art, film making, writing, and somatic practice. Modules are designed to be conversant with one another, supporting an interdisciplinary approach to the development and articulation of your individual practice through studio exploration supported by reflective and theoretical study.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent project, allowing you to build on the ideas encountered in the taught programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Career progression

Graduates use their creative research to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. Career progression

All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. The Master of Music in Composition and Creative Practice is designed to enable students to develop their compositional practice in a dynamic, rigorous and supportive creative environment. It aims to provide training in a range of approaches, introducing tools and techniques relevant to today’s music making, and encouraging exploration, innovation and experimentation.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The Creative Practice pathway of the MMus Music programme is designed for creative musicians who cannot easily separate performance and composition in their work, for example, musicians working in improvised music, singer-songwriters or those interested in live electronics.

You will take two compulsory research training modules, after which teaching and study progress from closely taught modules designed to secure and extend your technique to more autonomous, project-based learning opportunities.

Having completed the Postgraduate Diploma stage you will progress to Masters stage and submit a final portfolio of work. This portfolio will likely feature a combination of live performance and composition.

SELECTION PROCESS

Potential applicants may make an appointment for an informal interview with the Programme Director if practicable. All applicants will be asked either to submit a sample of written work, a DVD of their performance, or samples of their compositional work, or to sit an audition depending on their chosen specialism.

RESEARCH

Our work achieves wide international circulation, both through established scholarly channels and, distinctively, through broadcast media (such as BBC TV, Channel 4, BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, and National Public Radio in the USA). School staff are much in demand for pre-concert talks at venues such as London’s South Bank and Barbican centres.

The research environment at Surrey is sustained by open discussion and debate, and through the regular airing of work-in- progress. Our work is strengthened by the ready input of our peers and research students at various stages allowing collective engagement to foster innovation.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The MMus (Creative Practice) programme aims to provide students with a high quality education in the creative, re-creative, technical, critical, vocational and academic areas of the subject. It aims to provide students with the necessary skills, techniques and methodologies to work at an advanced level with a critical awareness of the discipline.

The programme aims to reflect current developments within the theory and practice of music creation that combines performance and composition elements and, in so doing, to educate students so that they may work confidently and constructively within the musical culture of the present.

The programme aims to offer the necessary preparation for students wishing to undertake doctoral level study in practice-based areas.

The MMus programme accords with Goldsmiths’ declared aims to work beyond the boundaries of preconceptions, provide freedom to experiment, encourage individuality and nurture talent. It is designed with careful consideration of the opportunities, challenges and intellectual demands presented by careers in music and the creative industries in general, such as professional performance, composition, film/TV composition, sound design, teaching, broadcasting and arts administration. The MMus is closely linked with the department’s research strategy, and the wide-ranging research and practice-based activities of academic staff.

The programme addresses the evolving challenges presented in creating music, sound art and technology, and/or concert performances. You develop systematic, critical and technical approaches to practice and research, exploring, as appropriate, contemporary or historical understandings of creative practice and musical performance. You investigate and appraise the contextual and technical basis of artistic and musical aims, helping you formulate an independent and original approach to your own work as a composer and/or performer. The programme explores the complex interrelationships between music and other disciplines, between theory and creative expression, and between composition, musical realisation and reception. It references a diverse range of music, focussing as appropriate upon contemporary and historical Western art music, popular music, the music of other cultures, and computer music.

Programme Structure and Requirements:
Each Master’s degree is awarded after the accumulation of 180 CAT (Credit and Transfer) points. You must take four modules (30 CATs each) and the portfolio or recital option (60 CATs) designated for your pathway. Each pathway comprises: 1. Core modules. 2. Options. 3. Portfolio or Recital. The specialism of your portfolio/recital should be closely allied to the specific programme outcomes of your pathway and its core modules, and agreed with the relevant pathway coordinator. The options provide you with a choice of modules most relevant to your chosen pathway. You will receive advice from the department at interview and/or enrolment about your choices. The MA Performing Arts: Creative Practice and Leadership develops your capacity to create and lead projects in the performing arts.

From Shakespeare to hip hop theatre and dance, you are encouraged to engage with and reconceptualise classical, avant-garde, contemporary and global practices into distinct and innovative practical work.

You will enhance your understanding of the exciting and varied approaches to work in this key sector of the creative industries, while also considering the specific challenges that face emerging leaders in this field.

Reflecting upon your own artistic viewpoint you will explore the role of the arts in today’s complex societies and the implications from your practise.

• Study with the University’s team of performing arts professionals, visiting artists and facilities that include a professionally theatre.
• Engage with lecturers who draw on their research into, and experience of, creative practices to facilitate your reflections upon the role of performing arts today to refine your own artistic vision.

Assessment of practice mirrors professional working environments and expectations as far as possible, and tests skills and abilities as a means of enhancing and preparing you for the demands of future employment.

Assessments are designed to help you acquire professionally equivalent skills and abilities, while also promoting and testing your independent critical thinking to develop you as a reflective and articulate artist and researcher as well as an independent and confident future leader.Methods of assessment typify expectations of postgraduate study in advanced performance and include: public and in-studio performances, presentations, oral examinations, literature reviews, essays, and portfolio.

This range and diversity of testing offers opportunities for you, and for the staff team, to explore your relative strengths and weaknesses, and to respond positively to individual challenges through a supportive and personalised learning environment.

Careers

You will be equipped to develop and promote projects and to apply for opportunities in the performing arts suited to your particular skills and abilities. Depending upon your choice of electives these may include:

• Performer: independent/freelance performer Interdisciplinary Performance Practitioner: collaborative and interdisciplinary performance work, self-generated performance-based practice

• Choreographer: independent dance maker/artist, choreographer to specific brief and/or group/project, collaborative artist in interdisciplinary projects

• Director/Theatre maker: independent theatre director and theatre maker

• Educator: lecturer/teacher/leader in a range of formal HE, FE and schools context, in addition to freelance work in wider community and professional environments

• Independent Portfolio Worker in the Creative Industries: consultant and researcher

Previous graduates from the University of Bedfordshire courses currenl work as directors of their own companies, entertaininers, workshop leaders and lecturers.
