The Creative Practice MRes is a Masters level course based in the rich research culture of Westminster School of Media, Art and Design. Over one year full-time or two years part-time, you will develop and complete a major research project related to your creative practice, culminating in an exhibition presentation and a written reflection on your research.

The Creative Practice MRes is an ideal stepping stone to further practice based PhD research, as well as a unique opportunity to realise an ambitious creative project with the support of research-led practitioners across the field of the arts and media, as part of the internationally renowned Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM) – the UK’s top-rated general art and design research centre. REF results link to CREAM with a score of 45% 4*, 46% 3*, 9% 2* in the UKs most recent UKs’s official REF (Research Excellent Framework).

The course offers access to the excellent resources of Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design, including the research culture of the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM), our new Music Research Group and our internationally renowned Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI).

The course enables you to develop your practice and research skills in arts and media towards the completion of your research project, supported by expert supervision from eminent artists, theorists and designers, as part of CREAM’s extensive practice-based doctoral programme. You will work in close supervision with a researcher practitioner in your field of specialism, to assist you in the development of your individual research project.

You will have the opportunity to select and attend seminar programmes alongside CREAM’s doctorate students and MA students in a range of different art subjects relating to your interests. Our current range of research expertise includes photography, experimental and documentary moving image, digital art, curation, music and experimental sound, fashion and ceramics.

The MA by Creative Practice is designed for professional practitioners, recent graduates and professionals who wish to update and re-establish their own personal development. The MA is based on an individually negotiated programme of practice and research rather than a pre-arranged programme of teaching. There is a strong emphasis on supervised independent learning, personal responsibility, reflection and evaluation. It is a practical course for the practical student.

Study Details / Module Information

The programme consists of four taught modules, one of which is formally timetabled and the others taught through tutorial contact. You must complete 180 credits to graduate with the MA and each module will be assessed. Assessment methods will vary and may include written papers, practical outcomes such as exhibitions, performances and presentations, market research and other aspects of professional creative practice.

- Theoretical Research and Professional Practice (30 credits)
- Negotiated Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Autonomous Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Creative Practice Final Project (90 credits)

Assessment for Theoretical Research and Professional Practice takes the form of three 3000 word written assignments, other modules are assessed on practical outcomes, supporting contextual work, marketing strategies etc. Negotiated Creative Practice and the Creative Practice Final also include a viva voce.

All staff teaching on the MA by Creative Practice are professional practitioners in their respective disciplines and research interests reflect this. Recent publications include chapters in books such as Introduction to John Godber Plays 3 (London: Methuen, 2003); conference papers such as Interventionist Theatre: Theatre in Conflict Resolution (University of Leeds, Bretton Hall, 2004); Living Place Project and its Impact on Regeneration and The Application of CAD/CAM in the Production of Abstract Sculptural Form, presented at the 2005 International Design Conference, Yunlin University, Taiwan. Staff also have works in a wide range of public and private collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and exhibit at exhibitions including Collect at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Music compositions by members of staff have been performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Members of Fine Art and Design staff held a group exhibition Staff and Alumni ’08 as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, as well as having solo shows in Liverpool and beyond and taking part in international sculpture workshops. Throughout the year, Visiting Professors Joanna MacGregor and John Godber contribute to events within the Deanery, including the annual Cornerstone Festival.

Southampton Solent’s innovative and transmedia MA Critical Creative Practice programme focuses on individual student-centred learning and encourages critical creative practice across the creative spectrum, including art, design, fashion, photography, media arts and technology, helping to enhance employability and leaving you well-prepared to progress within your chosen creative field.

Taught by both creative industry professionals and academic practitioners, the course enables students to develop ideas and engage with the emerging material and digital cultures of the future, as well as the fast-changing demands of the creative industries and the associated changes to cultural production, consumption and interpretation.

The course structure is theory and practice based. The theoretical element consists of critical core units which reference visual culture, cultural theory, critical theory, art and design history, media culture, and material and digital culture. The interdisciplinary practice element relates to creative practice in the fields of art, design, fashion, photography, media arts and technology.

The integration of theory and practice is central to the course and learning is carefully structured through these interdependent units to develop a broad base of interrelated experiences, whilst also providing the opportunity to specialise through the professional practice unit and the choice of final dissertation or final project.

Students will also have the opportunity to take optional technician-supported introductory workshops which could include contemporary arts practice, photography, new media practice, 3D printing and laser cutting, material manipulation, performance, beauty and the body, film editing, and sound and image production. To complement their studies, students may be able to take part in international and European study exchange opportunities through the University's study abroad programmes.

The unique approach of this course can enhance employability, enabling students to progress into the workplace equipped with valuable critical thinking and practice-based skills required for working in the creative industries and forming innovative hybrid engagements.

The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full-time) or two year (part-time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full-time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work. MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame.

The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon prior experience and future aspirations.

Purpose

Dance Professional Practice is for experienced professionals in the fields of dance, performing arts or humanities, such as dancers, choreographers, academics, teachers and somatic practitioners.

Format

Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Career progression

All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Some graduates go on to work freelance, creating and performing their own work. Some graduates go on to become dance industry professionals, taking roles within arts management, and others go on to further study.

The Master of Creative Practice enables artists, designers, photographers, animators, educators, performers, directors and producers to develop expertise in practice-based creative research within Unitec’s Creative Industries cultural hub. 

Immerse yourself in an evolving environment of diverse creative practices including dance, theatre, music, film, new media, animation, visual art, craft, graphic design, product design, experience design and service design. Work on exciting and innovative projects in our art, design, photography, craft and media studios. Learn how to collaborate across disciplines, and facilitate or lead creative projects and teams. 

A typical first semester experience provides you with foundation knowledge in areas including: locating your creative practice within a wider body of knowledge, reading and thinking critically, experimenting with, and critiquing, approaches to collaborative and creative industry practice, and applying practice-based and qualitative research methods.

Negotiated studies courses give you the option of undertaking industry placements with leading creative organizations and agencies in Auckland, while supervised interdisciplinary studios provide possibilities for developing and enhancing practice based research skills. 

The remainder of your studies is the capstone project, which involves the conceptualization, proposal and implementation of creative research (90 or 120 credits), during which time you will be supervised and mentored by academic staff and/or industry professionals.

This flexible Masters is an opportunity to investigate and combine strategies for developing creative work – an inclusive and forward-thinking composition degree that acknowledges many different definitions of the term.

You will devise a coherent yet bespoke programme of study from an extensive list of options, and have the opportunity to uniquely blend practices from popular music, sound art, contemporary composition, ethnography and multi-media work. These modules help you engage with a variety of rigorous intellectual, critical and technical skills that will inform your work and culminate in a substantial creative project.

Depending on your module choices, you have access to the Electronic Music Studios (which offer advanced facilities for electro-acoustic composition, multichannel work and live/interactive performance) and the new Goldsmiths Music Studios (which offers a HD Pro-tools recording system and large format analogue desk). This programme offers two different work streams: Professional Development or Creative Labs.

The Professional Development work stream is designed for school teachers of creative subjects who want to update, extend and apply their existing academic, practical and creative skills. The focus is self-criticism and reflection skills, classroom and curriculum innovation, enhancing professional practice and career development. It consists of a 60 credit work-based review of learning that takes place primarily on site. This means that you engage and participate in critical reflection, design thinking workshops, regular community of practice group meetings, and produce a learning portfolio for formative and summative evaluation.

The Creative Labs work stream provides opportunities for practicing creatives such as artists, designers, photographers, animators, educators, performers, directors and producers to extend and apply their existing practical, creative and collaborative skills in interdisciplinary studio environments, with a focus on enhancing creative practice and career development/change. It consists of a 60 credit project course that takes place in Unitec’s photography, art, design, performance and media facilities and studios and/or in industry and community settings. Creative practitioners engage with staff and peers in studio critiques, and work towards an exhibition, publication or live event that contributes to the cultural life of the campus and city.

Areas of study incorporate a diverse range of perspectives, including theoretical and philosophical underpinning of arts practice, visual and body-based art, film making, writing, and somatic practice. Modules are designed to be conversant with one another, supporting an interdisciplinary approach to the development and articulation of your individual practice through studio exploration supported by reflective and theoretical study.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent project, allowing you to build on the ideas encountered in the taught programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. Our MMus programme is distinctive in its range of musicological, compositional and performance-based elements.

You will benefit from the diversity of our research strengths, numerous ensemble performance opportunities and expertise in a range of musical fields, including contemporary music for the concert hall, popular music, film music, opera, acoustic, electronic and computer-generated music.

Programme overview

The Creative Practice pathway of the MMus Music programme is designed for creative musicians who cannot easily separate performance and composition in their work, for example, musicians working in improvised music, singer-songwriters or those interested in live electronics.

You will take two compulsory research training modules, after which teaching and study progress from closely taught modules designed to secure and extend your technique to more autonomous, project-based learning opportunities.

Having completed the Postgraduate Diploma stage you will progress to Masters stage and submit a final portfolio of work. This portfolio will likely feature a combination of live performance and composition.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year.

Selection process

Potential applicants may make an appointment for an informal interview with the Programme Director if practicable. All applicants will be asked either to submit a sample of written work, a DVD of their performance, or samples of their compositional work, or to sit an audition depending on their chosen specialism.

Research

Our work achieves wide international circulation, both through established scholarly channels and, distinctively, through broadcast media (such as BBC TV, Channel 4, BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, and National Public Radio in the USA). School staff are much in demand for pre-concert talks at venues such as London’s South Bank and Barbican centres.

The research environment at Surrey is sustained by open discussion and debate, and through the regular airing of work-in- progress. Our work is strengthened by the ready input of our peers and research students at various stages allowing collective engagement to foster innovation.

Educational aims of the programme

The MMus (Creative Practice) programme aims to provide students with a high quality education in the creative, re-creative, technical, critical, vocational and academic areas of the subject. It aims to provide students with the necessary skills, techniques and methodologies to work at an advanced level with a critical awareness of the discipline.

The programme aims to reflect current developments within the theory and practice of music creation that combines performance and composition elements and, in so doing, to educate students so that they may work confidently and constructively within the musical culture of the present.

Programme structure

The programme is comprised of three core courses (Composition, Digital and Creative Skills, Individual Creative Practice, and Composition Portfolio) as well as a series of optional courses to allow you to tailor our own bespoke structure. Options will include:

There will also be opportunities to engage with interdisciplinary study, with courses available from other subjects within the School:

  • Making Time: performing and thinking temporalities in the creative arts (History of Art)

Core teaching will be delivered during semesters 1 and 2. Over the summer months you will complete the core Composition Portfolio, to be submitted at the end of August.

A variety of teaching methods will be used, including seminars, one-to-one tutorials, and project work. 

Career prospects

This programme prepares students for careers in composition as well as equipping students more generally with skills necessary for careers in cultural industries (eg. arts administration and management). Additionally, this programme provides the necessary foundation for pursuing further research in composition in the form of a PhD.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Practice enables artists, designers, photographers, animators, educators, performers, directors, producers and other creative thinkers to advance their professional careers within Unitec’s Creative Industries cultural hub.

• The third full-time year (or fifth and sixth years for part-time) comprises a dedicated programme of independent learning via practice-based activity supported by Principal Study lessons and academic supervision.
• You will develop an extended project, or series of projects, during the final third of your MFA studies which investigates particular aspects of creative musical practice in discussion with a dedicated supervisor. Your work will have the potential to yield a substantial area of research, and is likely to culminate in the form of performance(s), a lecture demonstration, or a mixed mode project.

The MA will also help you specialise in the areas of creative practice and contemporary writing in order to pave the way for doctoral study.

​Course Content​​

All of our modules are co​re and are delivered over one year full time or two years part time.

Term 1
- Researching Humanities
Researching Humanities will introduce you to research methods at MA level. The module provides a thorough breakdown of research methods across the fields of Creative Writing and English Literature. This module is taught across all of our MA Creative Writing and English Literature pathways and it is also a great opportunity for you to get to know your peers.

- Short Story Writing
Short Story Writing provides a thorough introduction to the short story. This is done through two distinct, but integrated, approaches: a critical analysis of the development of the short story, with particular focus on twentieth century and contemporary writing; and through the creative practice itself. Each week you'll be encouraged to explore key techniques and approaches in your own writing through writing workshops.

- New & Experimental Writing
In New and Experimental Writing you will encounter a range of transgressive texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Starting with the avant-garde, the module proceeds chronologically to the contemporary. We interrogate what it means to transgress aesthetic norms at various points in time and take into consideration historical and cultural context to consider whether there might be a connection between the challenging of literary and social standards. You will be able to approach these texts via a number of methodologies, including theoretical and creative.

Term 2
- Novel Writing
Novel Writing extends and deepens your engagement with fiction writing. The module provides you with a thorough introduction to the novel as a distinct fictional genre focussing on the contemporary. As well as examining key works, you'll also be working on your own creative practice. A key part of the module focuses on the preparation of your work for publication.

- Writing the City
In Writing the City you'll explore representations of urban space through set texts and in your own creative writing. In this module you’ll examine texts that explore the urban in literary fiction, particularly throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

- Critical Practice
Critical Practice prepares you for your dissertation through which you'll be able to submit a substantial body of creative work along with a contextualising critical commentary.

- Dissertation
The Dissertation module is your opportunity to create a portfolio of writing, such as a collection of short stories or an excerpt of a novel that you are working on. The creative work will be accompanied by a critical reflection in which you contextualise your writing within a critical framework and with reference to other texts.

Learning & Teaching​

​Most modules are taught through group workshops and seminars. Some modules will also include individual tutorials and the dissertation module is delivered entirely through one-to-one tutorials with your supervisor.

In workshops and seminars full use is made of University technology and course materials will be delivered and stored through our Virtual Learning Environment. It will be possible for you to access the Virtual Learning Environment remotely and you will be encouraged to do so.

Most modules are 20 or 30 credits although we also have a 10 credit module and the dissertation is worth 60 credits. In a 10 credit module you will receive 11 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 89 hours of independent study. In a 20 credit module you will receive 22 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 178 hours of independent study. In a 30 credit module you will receive 33 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 267 hours of independent study. The 60 credit dissertation is mainly conducted with independent study. You will receive 6 hours of tutorial supervision (this includes supervisors looking over your work) and you will be expected to conduct 594 hours of independent study.

Each student is appointed a personal tutor who will be available for academic advice, pastoral support and personal development planning. Tutors also have weekly office hours.

A critical but supportive environment is achieved through a combination of workshops, research seminars and e-learning. You will be introduced to the practicalities of preparing and submitting your work for publication.

Assessment

We have a variety of approaches to assessment across the programme depending upon the module. All creative practice modules (Short Story Writing, Novel Writing, Dissertation) are assessed through portfolios of creative work and accompanying critical essays in which you are required to reflect on your creative practice and to contextualise your work with reference to other texts. These modules also include class-based formative peer-assessment in the form of writing workshops. These do not count towards your final grade but the sessions do help you grow and reflect as a critical and creative writer.

In some modules (New and Experimental Writing, Writing the City) you can choose your method of assessment (creative portfolio and critical essay, or essay, or reflection, for example).

In the introductory Researching the Humanities module you will be ask to produce a visual representation of a chosen research method, in the form of a poster. In other modules, such as Writing the City, you will be asked to post your work to a reflective blog.

Modules also make use of Virtual Learning Environments for assessments and you may be asked to view material online and then to respond to it.

You will receive tutor support in class and through our VLE in order to prepare you for each assessment point. We also have library facilities online and at campus.

Employability & Careers​

Many of our students use the course to generate and hone their own writing for publication. Our creative practice modules are designed with eventual publication in mind. For example, in our Novel Writing module you will be taught how to write a synopsis for submission to an agent or publisher. Several of our students have had publication success (see below).

The MA is also a great choice for those wishing to enhance their employment and professional opportunities in editorial and publishing careers. The programme is suitable for those who would like to become teachers of creative writing or who are already teachers. For example, teachers of English at ‘A’ Level and GCSE often find the course suitable for professional development purposes, providing them with skills to enhance their teaching of creative writing within their current curricula or skilling them up to deliver the new Creative Writing ‘A’ Level.

Our MA is appropriate for those who would like careers in community-based education and practice. The course also prepares you for further study at PhD level at Cardiff Metropolitan University and beyond.

This degree will encourage you to develop the valuable transferable skills of autonomy, effective collaboration, self-direction, organisation, initiative and adaptability that are highly regarded in the workplace.

Recent student publishing successes:
Barbara A Stensland (MA Creative Writing) writes a blog about living with MS that has recently been published as a book, Stumbling in Flats (2015). It has been shortlisted for The International Rubery Book Award 2015.

Emre Karatoprak (MA Creative Writing) had his first novel published on Amazon, Türbülans (2013).

Alex Sambrook (MA Creative Writing) had a short story shortlisted in the prestigious Bridport Short Story Competition (2012).

Stacey Taylor, (MA English & Creative Writing), won the It Started With a Kiss competition run by Authonomy in November 2011 with a 416 word flash fiction.
