Our Digital Creative Media MSc is aimed at building students’ knowledge and expertise in a range of digital creative media topics to help them understand, design and develop creative media applications that are growing in popularity, including smart phone applications.
You will develop your digital and creative skills across a variety of media platforms to use in many sectors. The MA Creative Media Arts: Data and Innovation is designed to respond directly to your needs as someone with the ambition to build a career in one of the growth sectors in the UK: the creative and cultural industries. The course is delivered in the context of Bournemouth University’s world renowned Faculty of Media & Communication, known for its contacts at the heart of the media industry. Over the last 20 years, the UK has become a leading hub for the production of major fiction films, and UK trained specialists are some of the most respected in the world. You will gain production management skills by working with experienced film industry personnel and senior academic staff.
The content of the course has been developed in partnership with Creative Media Skills, meaning you can be assured that what you are learning is directly relevant to current industry practice. Throughout the course your time will be divided between campus at DMU in Leicester, and the CMS centre in Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire with one semester being taught at each location, and a third semester of guided independent study based at DMU.
During the course, you will be given the opportunity to pursue specialisation in a range of areas, including production design, art direction, directing, assistant directing, cinematography, hair and makeup, prosthetics and production management. You will be expected to work collaboratively in developing and realising a production by taking on a head of department role, which will be allocated by tutors.

During the first semester, you will work at DMU. This semester involves developing core skills in storytelling, screenwriting, directing, producing, image processing, sound recording and other camera based skills. You will take four, 15 credit modules during semester one:
You will be taught by DMU’s team of production experts and filmmakers in our multi-million pound Creative Technology Studios, and you will begin the process of developing a major project, and specialising in a production role.
During the second semester, you will work in the Creative Media Skills centre. Here you will finesse your skills in a more diverse range of areas, including production management and coordination, pitching, assistant directing, production management, script supervision, hair, make-up, costume, art department; working with actors and working in teams. You will also enter pre-production under the guidance of our expert staff. At Creative Media Skills, you will take two, 30 credit modules, which cover these various areas:
During this semester you will be expected to pitch film ideas to a panel of industry experts. The best of which will be selected as the major projects, which will become your focus in the third semester.
During the third semester you will work more independently at DMU to manage and deliver your final film project, with an accompanying reflective commentary. This project will demonstrate the skills and knowledge developed on the course, and will form the basis of your professional portfolio. You also have the option of taking an academic dissertation.
In addition to the major project, assessments take the form of practical coursework, written reports and presentations.
The recent growth in new media management has seen a rise in and demand for skilled creative media management professionals, who are not only confident in deploying media technologies and platforms but also in management practices, methods and experience to drive forward the latest media advances.
Your studies are based in our modern media labs in the Department of Media Arts and Communication. Many of our academic staff bring industry experience to their teaching. The course also includes a regular programme of industry speakers and client based projects, as well as a foundation for those wishing to move into media management roles within organisations, recognise existing skills and knowledge through a formal qualification, or start their own media business.
The course is made up of eight taught modules, plus a major linked project where you could work with or within an organisation. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the in demand skills and experience of the creative media industry. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.
Students will gain an understanding of how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. The course uses industry-standard software and hardware tools such as Adobe and Apple software in well-equipped media studios and associated lab facilities. The course is designed to develop business awareness, entrepreneurial skills, management confidence and a portfolio of industry experience through client based media projects, industry networking and digital media industry insight.
You study a range of modules designed to prepare you for real world challenges. The course has been designed in conjunction with industry professionals and aims to give you real world experience through working on live client briefs. You also work with the award winning Venture Matrix to enhance your employability and enterprise skills. Assessment is based primarily on individual project work, as well as team based projects and presentations. These projects allow students to access industry, network and build a portfolio of client based work.
Work based learning is also encouraged as part of the degree. Module teams will support students who wish to apply their studies directly to the work place. The Digital Media Management Project module in particular allows students to work with or within organisations on projects to enhance a company or organisation.
A number of industry days and events are also held on campus and within the Sheffield Cultural Industries Quarter where students can take part in workshops, talks, and exhibitions held by creative media industry representatives, professionals, and companies/ organisations. These activities give a window to the world of work and opportunities that lie ahead. They provide students with direct access to industry and exposure to opportunities within the industry.

The one-year master’s programme in Media and Communication Studies – Culture, Collaborative Media, and Cultural Industries – will equip you with advanced knowledge of digital media. You will work creatively and in an explorative fashion with different types of media while you learn to approach them from a critical perspective.
During the programme you will develop three primary skill sets: the ability to analyse and strategically approach media and its impact on society; the capability to work with media and communication both methodologically and systematically; the knowledge required to produce media texts, both individually and collaboratively. The programme is developed alongside and conducted in collaboration with Media Evolution, a media cluster with over 350 member companies based in Malmö. The programme, which is web-based and full-time, makes education available to students globally and offers a unique blend of distance and campus based learning. The seminars are compulsory, and you can either attend in Malmö or online. This Master's is organised in the environment of the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and its Centre for Social Media Research. CAMRI is a world-leading research centre that studies the role of media and communication in society. It has become known as the Westminster school of critical media and communication research. The Social Media, Culture and Society MA will benefit those seeking to develop their understanding of contemporary communication and its social, political and cultural contexts. This degree will be of particular interest to those who plan to work in the creative industries, as well as those already working in this field. Social Media, Culture and Society MA will also be of interest to students working in non-profit sectors, including NGOs and advocacy groups. The degree will help those seeking a competitive edge in a careers market that values high-level skills in communication, research and critical thinking.
The course also provides an excellent preparation for those wishing to continue their studies to PhD level. Around 10% of graduates of the course are now undertaking PhDs. Others work in the social media start-up scene in London, or work as journalists and in a range of industries and non-profit sectors.
Our Managing in the Creative Economy MA programme bridges the gap between creativity and business. This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. It has been developed by academics and creative economy practitioners at Kingston Business School to help you respond to emerging trends and opportunities to realise value in the creative economy.
The programme is designed for individuals who come from creative industries, or have graduated in another discipline, including engineering and humanities. You will need a strong motivation to look beyond the traditional boundaries of your discipline, a readiness to participate in a start-up, and a willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary and experiential environment. You will work with students from all over the world and from different creative sectors. This diversity challenges you to think differently and exposes you to differing perspectives on creativity and business.
The programme now has nine generations of graduates and an active alumni network. Our graduates work in a range of creative and leadership positions ranging from freelance work in the creative sector, through to business ownership and employment in large innovative companies in the creative economy.
The creative industries are outpacing traditional industries both in the UK and the rest of the world. In the UK, the creative industries represent 5.2 per cent of the UK economy and provide 1.9 million jobs (DCMS, 2016). With the growth of the creative industries, the creative economy has grown at a rate faster than the whole of the UK economy, and was worth £133.3billion in 2014, accounting for 8.2 per cent of the UK economy (DCMS, 2016).
An increasing number of countries has now placed the creative industries at the heart of their economic development. This creates opportunities for professionals who understand the critical success factors for commercialising creativity, and are equipped with the mix of creative and business knowledge and skills.
This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. By the end of the programme, you will be equipped with an in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills required to successfully realise value in the creative economy context.
You will specialise and become closely involved in the practice of a specific creative industry through engagement with a real business in the creative sector. This will be the opportunity to experience practical work and realise value in a chosen creative industry:

You will also explore the process of collaborative creativity and examine what it takes to successfully develop ideas into innovative products, service and processes. The core of the programme is a real-life business experience; working in a team, you will start and run your own creative industries business in the supportive and risk-free environment provided by Kingston Business School. Our entrepreneurship experts will guide you through the process of designing and running your own creative business, which will help you develop your creative, managerial and entrepreneurial skills.
Assessments are innovative and include a mix of individual and group project work and formal assessments, including essays, case studies, reports and presentations, role-play, games and simulations, plus the final Personal Research Project (maximum 15,000 words). You will study in a supportive environment where regular feedback is provided by both academics and professionals.

-Experience regular visits from industry experts and entrepreneurs, field trips to entrepreneurial businesses and events such as Frieze Art Fair that connect the creative industry to the local community and enable you to build a valuable network.
