Our Digital Creative Media MSc is aimed at building students’ knowledge and expertise in a range of digital creative media topics to help them understand, design and develop creative media applications that are growing in popularity, including smart phone applications. 

You will develop your digital and creative skills across a variety of media platforms to use in many sectors. Students will also benefit from experience in 3D creative media and studio environments first-hand, all of which will provide a unique opportunity to engage with advanced research motivated problems in the exciting topics related to digital creative media.

During this full-time MA Cultural Management you'll work creatively in a department that offers one of London's richest portfolios of arts and humanities courses, appealing to a range of students who wish to develop their expertise in fields including visual and performing arts, advertising, architecture, crafts,design, fashion, film, publishing, TV and radio, and video games.

The course will develop your understanding of the practice and management of the creative and cultural industries, as well as the political, economic and cultural contexts in which these industries operate. You'll develop your skills and critical understanding of the cultural and creative media sector, and the management of cultural organisations in a wide variety of contexts including drama, creative writing, visual arts curation, festival and theatre management. You'll also have hands-on experience of producing or managing a project.

Year 1 class contact time is typically 8 hours per week plus individual tutorial plus independent study.

Teaching and learning

The course offers one-to-one supervisions in three modules.There are regular additional support events, such as visits to galleries and performance viewings. The course now boasts a new shared production office, which allows to you to work on projects collaboratively in an environment similar to that which you could expect after graduation.

Placements

The course offers you the opportunity to take part in significant work experience placements in London, the UK or possibly abroad. Both the preparation for the placement, which we guide you through, and the placement itself are assessed modules as part of the course. Our positioning in Central London, and our developed industry links means that we are exceptionally placed for students taking part on the placements.

Working with an individual experienced mentor on a project is also an alternative to the traditional placement.

Past placements include: Royal National Theatre Archive, Golley Slater Marketing, Saatchi Gallery.

The gallery is a home for visual art and a unique part of the University's heritage. Opened in 2012, the Borough Road Gallery contains valuable and significant works of Post War British Art in a public collection, produced by the celebrated artist and teacher David Bomberg (1890-1957).

Learning, teaching and assessment within the programme has been designed to develop specialist knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to your professional practice in creative media, as well as to enable you to develop academic and transferable skills that will support your creative practice. Your knowledge, skills and approaches will be developed through a variety of learning strategies, including lectures, written assignments, group work, seminars, practical work, and tutorial support.

The technical team run regular workshops in the use of resources, such as cameras and studios, to offer you the opportunity to acquire new skills. Please note that we do not teach software applications: you are expected already to have such knowledge relevant to your arena of practice.

On offer is our state of the art Digital Arts Centre with a dedicated MA Room with Macintosh computers running industry standard digital media software, and smaller studio spaces for digital media experimentation, research, production and development work. There is a 48 track digital sound recording studio, a digital video production studio with full lighting rig, blue screen technology and multi-camera studio facilities, as well as digital video editing facilities and web servers. We also have animation rostrums and a printmaking and ceramics studio.

In the environment of these facilities, you will be taught by a dedicated team of tutors who have considerable industry experience, and supported by an excellent technical team who can offer advice on practical applications.

Assessment is through coursework. This will usually be a practical project supported by a written reflective account of your concepts, research and critical approach.

The recent growth in new media management has seen a rise in and demand for skilled creative media management professionals, who are not only confident in deploying media technologies and platforms but also in management practices, methods and experience to drive forward the latest media advances.

Your studies are based in our modern media labs in the Department of Media Arts and Communication. Many of our academic staff bring industry experience to their teaching. The course also includes a regular programme of industry speakers and client based projects, as well as a foundation for those wishing to move into media management roles within organisations, recognise existing skills and knowledge through a formal qualification, or start their own media business.

The course is made up of eight taught modules, plus a major linked project where you could work with or within an organisation. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the in demand skills and experience of the creative media industry. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.

Students will gain an understanding of how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. The course uses industry-standard software and hardware tools such as Adobe and Apple software in well-equipped media studios and associated lab facilities. The course is designed to develop business awareness, entrepreneurial skills, management confidence and a portfolio of industry experience through client based media projects, industry networking and digital media industry insight.

You study a range of modules designed to prepare you for real world challenges. CMS bring professionals and department heads into the classroom, and provides students with access to the UK film industry’s most valuable knowledge base – its staff.

Develop a range of production management skills

At DMU, these skills include scriptwriting, lighting and cinematography, image processing, directing and post production. At CMS you will focus on pitching, budgeting, production development, and fine skills. You will also gain core business expertise, such as an understanding of research and development, and wider careers planning.

Learning off campus at CMS

The second semester of your learning will take place in the Creative Media Skills centre. While there, you will manage the development of a production and receive masterclasses on a range of fine skills from the CMS team and respected professionals actively working in the film industry.

During the first semester, you will work at DMU. This semester involves developing core skills in storytelling, screenwriting, directing, producing, image processing, sound recording and other camera based skills. You will take four, 15 credit modules during semester one:

You will be taught by DMU’s team of production experts and filmmakers in our studio space, and you will begin the process of developing a major project, and specialising in a production role. 

During the second semester, you will work in the Creative Media Skills centre. Here you will finesse your skills in a more diverse range of areas, including Production management & Coordination, Pitching, Assistant Directing, Production Management, Script Supervision, Hair, Makeup, Costume, Art Department; Working with Actors and Working in Teams. You will also enter pre-production under the guidance of our expert staff. At Creative Media Skills, you will take two, 30 credit modules, which cover these various areas: 

  • Pre-Production and Development
  • Fine skills

During this semester you will be expected to pitch film ideas to a panel of industry experts. The best will be selected as the major projects, which will become your focus in the third semester. During the third semester you will work more independently at DMU to manage and deliver your final film project, with an accompanying reflective commentary. This project will demonstrate the skills and knowledge developed on the course, and will form the basis of your professional portfolio. You also have the option of taking an academic dissertation.

What is collaborative media?

Digital media of today are characterised by participation and cooperation; media are wholly collaborative, in terms of both production and consumption – and this is what is meant by the term ‘collaborative media.’

What will I learn?

The one-year master’s programme in Media and Communication Studies – Culture, Collaborative Media, and Cultural Industries – will equip you with advanced knowledge of digital media. The programme is oriented towards practical approaches to the field. You will work creatively and in an explorative fashion with different types of media while you learn to approach them from a critical perspective.

During the programme you will develop three primary skill sets: the ability to analyse and strategically approach media and its impact on society; the capability to work with media and communication both methodologically and systematically; the knowledge required to produce media texts, both individually and collaboratively. Compared to bachelor-level degrees, this advanced programme has a clear focus on the development of strategic expertise, a skill crucial for those intending to pursue a professional career in media and communication. During the year, you will furthermore obtain an in-depth knowledge of the workings of the creative industries.

The programme is developed alongside and conducted in collaboration with Media Evolution, a media cluster with over 350 member companies based in Malmö. This facilitates a crossover between the academic and professional worlds and allows you as a student to develop skills in both areas throughout your studies. Throughout the duration of the programme you will get the chance to meet a number of international guest lecturers from universities all across the world, further adding to the global relevance of the programme.

The first and second semester

The first semester focuses on examining key themes in communication studies and on how the creative industries of today are operated. During the second semester you will learn more about the possibilities with collaborative media. The year ends with a (one-year, 15 credits) master's thesis.

The pedagogical approach

The programme, which is web-based and full-time, makes education available to students globally and offers a unique blend of distance and campus based learning. The seminars are compulsory, and you can either attend in Malmö or online. This approach makes it possible for international students to enrol in the programme without having to relocate, leading to a diverse and intercultural student body that increases the opportunities for students to form transnational networks and to benefit from international lecturers.

The programme is hosted on an online platform through which communication between students and lecturers takes place and where student projects are uploaded. As the main theme of the programme is collaborative media, this pedagogical approach leaves room for experimentation, and students are encouraged to use collaborative media during this process.

What can I do with my degree?

After graduating, you will have the qualifications necessary to work in media and communication. The skill set and knowledge you develop during your studies are valuable to the fast-growing creative indutries. Companies, government, and organisations are other possible employers as they become increasingly dependent on communication and media in their business. The MA in Digital Media has been redefining media theory and practice since 2004. Our students become proficient in:

The Digital Media, Culture and Society MA is an innovative programme that stays responsive to key developments in contemporary digital media, culture and society.

It engages with some of the most exciting and pressing cultural and social issues of our time, such as activism, big data, the cultural and creative economy, everyday life, future cities, social wellbeing and identity.

It covers key theoretical debates in media and cultural studies and draws from local, national and global contexts to help you develop the critical and methodological skills that are necessary for researching the role of digital technologies in culture and society. 

You will be taught by leading academics in visual communication, social media, smart technologies and media production for social change. Our knowledge-exchange activities engage us with diverse businesses, communities and policy actors including media, publishers, digital companies, community groups and NGOs, which will allow you to make professional contacts during your studies.

The course offers flexible modes of study through online distance or campus learning – full-time or part-time – with entry points in September and February. There are also opportunities to complete shorter programmes at both certificate and diploma level.

Distance learning

Students can complete the Digital Media, Culture and Society MA in online distance mode, either through part-time of full-time study. Distance learners follow the same weekly syllabus as on-campus students and engage online on a continuous basis with the teaching staff and their peers.

Each module has a guide that contains detailed information about the module content, readings and assessments, as well as clear instructions on how to engage with it. The University of Brighton’s student intranet system, studentcentral, is used to teach and deliver the modules.

If you are a distance learner, each module sees you: reading the module guide and collected readings to grasp the shape, content and pathway through the teaching material; participating in asynchronous online discussion boards to engage with the weekly topics; and conducting independent research and background reading to support all parts of your module study in preparation for the assessment.

Module tutors facilitate discussion and offer guidance throughout.

Provisions

  • Seminar discussions are facilitated in a number of ways to enable distance learners to participate. These include live video conferencing, online chat rooms and discussion forums.
  • Masterclasses, lectures and on-campus seminars are video or audio recorded and uploaded for students to access online on studentcentral within 48 hours of the class. A range of seminars will also be streamed live online.
  • All weekly readings are electronically accessible online via the studentcentral reading list.
  • All assignments are submitted electronically via studentcentral (with the exception of physical artefacts, which are submitted via postal system).
  • One-to-one tutorials are conducted either online either using video conferencing or via a telephone conversation.

Careers and employability

Creative media is both a description of what we do and an instruction for future practice. We take the best elements of media education, creative industries, communication/media studies and literacy theory and offer students a suite of modules that can be customised to fit career goals, family and working patterns, and personal interests. 

Graduates of the MA will be able to:

  • demonstrate a range of analytical, critical, collaborative practice and professional skills relevant to the digital media sector.
  • understand how cultural, social and economic differences operate in mediated environments, and how they are changing with new media technologies.
  • use a range of research methods and work within diverse disciplinary and professional paradigms. 

Previous students include PhD candidates at Salford and Brighton, a lecturer at the University of Sussex, a journalist and presenter at the Chongqing Broadcasting Group, an employee in the public diplomacy division at NATO, the founder of Australia's Swarn Conference, a project manager at Agile Impact Group, and a creative producer at the International Symposium of Electronic Art.
