Our Managing in the Creative Economy MA programme bridges the gap between creativity and business. This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. It has been developed by academics and creative economy practitioners at Kingston Business School to help you respond to emerging trends and opportunities to realise value in the creative economy.

The programme is designed for individuals who come from creative industries, or have graduated in another discipline, including engineering and humanities. You will need a strong motivation to look beyond the traditional boundaries of your discipline, a readiness to participate in a start-up, and a willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary and experiential environment. You will work with students from all over the world and from different creative sectors. This diversity challenges you to think differently and exposes you to differing perspectives on creativity and business.

The programme now has nine generations of graduates and an active alumni network. Our graduates work in a range of creative and leadership positions ranging from freelance work in the creative sector, through to business ownership and employment in large innovative companies in the creative economy.

The creative industries are outpacing traditional industries both in the UK and the rest of the world. In the UK, the creative industries represent 5.2 per cent of the UK economy and provide 1.9 million jobs (DCMS, 2016). With the growth of the creative industries, the creative economy has grown at a rate faster than the whole of the UK economy, and was worth £133.3billion in 2014, accounting for 8.2 per cent of the UK economy (DCMS, 2016).

An increasing number of countries has now placed the creative industries at the heart of their economic development. This creates opportunities for professionals who understand the critical success factors for commercialising creativity, and are equipped with the mix of creative and business knowledge and skills.

What will you study?

This unique business degree programme enables you to combine specific creative practice and skills with a rigorous business education customised for the creative industries. By the end of the programme, you will be equipped with an in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills required to successfully realise value in the creative economy context.

You will also explore the process of collaborative creativity and examine what it takes to successfully develop ideas into innovative products, service and processes. The core of the programme is a real-life business experience; working in a team, you will start and run your own creative industries business in the supportive and risk-free environment provided by Kingston Business School. Our entrepreneurship experts will guide you through the process of designing and running your own creative business, which will help you develop your creative, managerial and entrepreneurial skills.

Assessment

Assessments are innovative and include a mix of individual and group project work and formal assessments, including essays, case studies, reports and presentations, role-play, games and simulations, plus the final Personal Research Project (maximum 15,000 words). This programme offers a number of pathways:

It's an ideal Masters if you want to develop a business in one of these fields, or in new areas of the creative industries. All students bring a business idea to the programme to use as a live case study. 

The Masters is taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

This programme is designed to allow you to continue to innovate, but also to provide the requisite business/entrepreneurial skills and attributes to commercialise your creative and cultural practices and/or knowledge.

You’ll be able to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these. Through the programme you will develop techniques to move your creative and critical thinking to entrepreneurial thinking.

This programme has an exit route at Postgraduate Diploma level.

You will be expected to research the global issues related to the use of creative technologies and investigate current factors such as migration of content across different networks and platforms, emerging interactive technologies within Audio/Video (including VR) and the convergence of fields and disciplines within multiple creative industries.

Course work is based on establishing your own focused question and then developing a project that aims at challenging conventions in the use of creative technologies. Teaching & Learning

he MSc Creative Technologies places emphasis on the setting and completion of personal learning aims through the creation and realisation of a research project which has been informed by considered research, critical understanding and reflective learning. The MA in Creative Technologies course is designed to give you the opportunity to research and develop the commercial, technical and conceptual skills needed to succeed as a professional in your chosen area of expertise within the global creative industries.

As a result, the course will further your knowledge while at the same time pushing the boundaries of the possibilities in creating products to an industry standard. You are encouraged to be innovative and imaginative in the use of technology when generating creative solutions. The course promotes a multidisciplinary culture and working environment and students are encouraged to look at collaboration and cross-fertilisation of ideas.

Course work is based on establishing your own focused question and then developing a project that aims at challenging conventions in the use of creative technologies. This project should be a ‘live’ project negotiated with a tutor and industry practitioner that reflects real-life, audience facing, creative technology challenges. You will produce your own project plan, identifying how you wish to use creative technologies in developing your own practice, ultimately impacting your potential career in the creative industries.

The MA in Creative Technologies will provide you with the opportunity to:

Industry Week

Linking the three modules is Confetti’s annual Industry Week. Taking place in March each year, it will form the basis for you to present your work to date as part of this event and gather important feedback from industry specialists in order to inform future work and development.

Our heavyweights have included the likes of award-winning filmmakers Nick Broomfield, Shane Meadows, Aardman Animations – the Oscar winning creators of Shaun the Sheep, TV’s Stacey Dooley, Rockstar Games, Playstation, as well as some of the most respected names in the music industry – from Radio 1’s Andy Rogers and Mistajam to Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis and Professor Green.

Teaching & Learning

The MA Creative Technologies places emphasis on the setting and completion of personal learning aims through the creation and realisation of a research project which has been informed by considered research, critical understanding and reflective learning. Confetti promotes a multidisciplinary culture and working environment and students are encouraged to engage in collaboration and cross fertilisation of ideas. Students on these courses will be from a BSc or BA route and both MSc and MA students will be taught together.

The course is supported by Confetti Media Group businesses and external industry partners and practitioners who will work with you to enhance your professional ambitions and learning experiences in areas including entrepreneurship, freelance working, funding, professional networking and collaboration.

As a postgraduate student you will be taught through seminars, group discussions, workshops and both group and individual tutorials with your supervisor and the wider course team. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in the field of creative technologies and by guest industry practitioners.

The following teaching and learning methods are used within the course:

  • Research Workshops – a series of tutor-led workshops that aim to introduce you to the research processes, industry practices, current debates, issues and theories associated with the creative industries.
  • Group Tutorials – working with your tutor, industry contacts and your peers you will further explore and extend your understanding of the subject. Group tutorials will give you the opportunity to negotiate your research ideas, receive feedback on your work in progress and to support you in managing your project and meeting milestones effectively. You will be expected to record, reflect on and use this feedback and your own insights.
  • Individual Tutorials – regular tutorials will allow you to discuss your development on the course alongside specific discussion with your project supervisor
  • Professional Journals – throughout the course you will complete a reflective record of your learning and professional development of your research project which follows industry processes of research, development and production
  • Technical Portfolios – in each module you will be supported in producing a portfolio of work demonstrating the development of your research project.
  • Technology and IT Skills Workshops – you will work individually and in small groups to apply your subject knowledge provided to real life industry situations. These may take place in IT suites, TV studios, recording studios or workshop spaces

Programme overview

This unique programme is aimed at creative producers and directors and those who train and work with actors and performers to develop and direct their skills.

The programme offers three specialist pathways, including choreography and movement direction, directing, musical theatre creation, and you will also have the opportunity to develop a specialist practice within your chosen pathway.

The programme is primarily designed for graduates in drama, theatre and dance from universities and conservatoires, but will also appeal to those who have established themselves professionally and wish to refresh their skills and perspectives and take on leadership, coaching, creative or directing roles.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time over two academic years. It consists of eight taught modules and an Advanced Creative Practice module.

Students enter the MA Creative Practices and Direction to a specified pathway, personally supervised by their pathway leader, an expert in the subject area.

Pathways

Movement Direction and Choreography pathway

Students on this pathway follow and practically investigate a number of techniques and ideas dealing with onstage physicality.

The focus is also on the development of movement language, through the investigation of the ideas and practices of seminal dance-based ideas (Laban, Bausch, Cunningham, Fosse, Graham, Horton, etc.) and methods for working with music and sound.

Directing pathway

This programme is a practice-led pathway incorporating methodologies and techniques that focus on approaches to theatre directing, dramaturgy, collaboration with other practitioners.

Musical Theatre Creation pathway

This pathway is designed for those who wish to study writing, and creative roles specifically in Musical Theatre. These might be as a director, choreographer, composer, librettist, musical director or creative producer.

Educational aims of the programme

  • Provide advanced study and practice in creative leadership and direction in theatre-making and/or the training of theatre artists, specific to the pathway chosen
  • Equip students for employment in the theatre industry and/or related performing arts industries as specialist practitioners in one of the following areas:
  1. Directing
  2. Movement Direction and Choreography
  3. Musical Theatre Creation
  • Provide students with integrated practical and theoretical knowledge of specialist creative and/or pedagogic practices relevant to their chosen pathway; contemporary technical and scholarly contexts; and industry-specific contexts

Facilities, equipment and academic support

The School of Arts facilities include the 200-seat theatre in the Ivy Arts Centre, dark and light studios, digital creation stations and editing facilities, scenic, props and costume workshops, and interconnected sound recording and music facilities.

Teaching and workshop activity takes place largely in GSA’s dedicated rehearsal rooms, performance studios and design workshops. Lectures, presentations and seminars will occur in rooms across campus.

The University Library contains the majority of set texts, key journals, scripts, play texts and video materials necessary for the programme. Students have access to extensive facilities through the virtual learning environment, SurreyLearn, and IT Services.

Additional support is available in the Learning Resource Centre in the University Library.

Equipment is provided on a project-by-project basis according to the nature of the work in hand and the parameters of the project, which are negotiated with the tutor.

Facilities and equipment for production work will be booked by students according to specific project briefings and advertised resource parameters.

Academic support is provided by way of ongoing contact with the programme director and module leaders, group briefings and feedback, individual tutorials, and mentoring.

The programme makes use of a peer feedback system designed to provide a useful and supportive account of areas of strength and effectiveness, along with areas for improvement.

You are encouraged to identify personal learning and creative objectives that can be pursued in alignment with group project work.

Research

The School of Arts includes study in dance, digital arts, film, music, sound and theatre, with research activity in all areas, often with significant interdisciplinary connections.

With an integrated approach that comprises documentation, analysis and performance, Surrey’s agenda for research aims to engage critically with the past and present, while rigorously articulating new frameworks for understanding and practising the arts and culture in the twenty-first century.

This is the first course of its kind here in the UK and is building on growing interest in social pedagogy. The course links to the successful BA Hons in Social Pedagogy, Advocacy and Participation which is run here at UCLan and has excellent student feedback.

It has been co-produced and will be co-taught by ThemPra, the leading organisation supporting development of social pedagogical practice in the UK. It meets the professional standards of practice as set out by the Social Pedagogue Professional Association.

Links with European partner organisations that use social pedagogy in practice as well as universities that run social pedagogy programmes of study.

The course is taught using experiential teaching techniques and is taught in a fun and creative way. All activities are transferrable into practice and students are encouraged to develop creative practice in their direct work.

Our course offers a social pedagogical perspective to leadership, enabling managers and senior practitioners in leadership roles to apply its principles, theories and philosophy to assist people to develop a culture of care and support within organisations and communities. Social pedagogical leadership also enables professionals to influence decisions and develop, support and sustain positive change using inclusive and empowering practice in working with disadvantaged groups.

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process.

INDUSTRY LINKS

Social Pedagogy Professional Association (SPPA) which is the UK’s only membership organization and the professional home and centre of excellence for social pedagogy, its theory and practice. SPPA holds the Standards for Occupational Proficiency in Social Pedagogy and the Standards of Education and Training in Social Pedagogy. They It also facilitates communities of practice which are spaces where people can learn from each other, supporting the development of Social Pedagogy in the UK. We are working alongside our partners in SPPA and ThemPra to ensure our course development reflects best practice in this emerging field and the MA course meets the Standards of Education and Training in Social Pedagogy.

The majority of lectures are members of the SPPA.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

This programme adopts an innovative approach in its teaching and learning methods. It is based on the premise that significant learning is acquired by doing, and that learning involves the whole person participating in learning activities. To achieve this the course uses a range of experiential learning methods including applied theatre, creative writing, reflective exercises, practical and creative workshops, as well as lectures and self-directed study. This delivery plan provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply their understanding of social pedagogy, leadership, theory, values and approaches.

Teaching will draw on interactive and experiential learning through practical activities that let students experience the challenges around leadership and enable the group to apply their learning and reflect on their own value base. Through the use of interactive activities, role play, case studies and sharing practice examples students will be encourage to discuss and apply theory.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Due to current government agenda and policy there is continued change within the social care/work arena aimed at transforming the workforce both in children and adult services. The ability of managers to support change and development has been highlighted as an important part of their role, as well as having the skills to support staff through change process. Supporting staff to work within limited resources whilst also providing high standards of care is also another key feature within the sector, and social pedagogy has been identified as helping support staff to reach this aim.

Social pedagogical leadership will also provide meaningful insight and the skills and knowledge needed for you to design self-managing structures with flat hierarchies, to galvanise your employees’ motivation and commitment to a deeper purpose and recognise them as human beings rather than a brain or pair of hands.

OPPORTUNITIES

We are hoping to attract international students on to this programme, the benefit of this will be the opportunity for collaborative learning as well as discussions on social pedagogical practice in different countries.

Some of the course team are also involved in a European project focused on social pedagogy across Europe. Again these links will be used within the course with opportunities to enhance learning and will include guest speakers, on-line video session and field/study trips.

Students will also have the opportunity to attend the Social Pedagogy Development network that is run by ThemPra once a year. As well as the annual SPPA conference and webinars hosted by them.

Graduates will be able to apply for management positions within a wide range of social work/care, education and health settings.

There are also potential routes into research and PhD and Professional Doctorial studies.

The Computing (games and entertainment) Pathway of the MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

This programme allows you to develop the business/entrepreneurial skills and attributes to commercialise on your creative and cultural practices and/or knowledge.

The Design Pathway of the MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

Modules & structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and Design Pathway students choose options in design for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production 

Either: Business of Design 30 Credits

OR Work Placement 30 Credits

You will undertake a work placement within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio

The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You'll be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You'll also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.
