The MA in Creative Education recognises that teaching is an inherently creative activity and draws on the current contexts within which design, media, art and performance education operate. You'll be encouraged to reflect on the innovation and creativity of your subject area to inform your approaches to teaching and learning.

Acknowledging that the best teachers are also learners, you'll be taking a scholarly look at teaching and reflecting on the literature, practices and contexts of the creative curriculum. This course also addresses a need to develop informed professionalism to support the teaching and learning of an increasingly diverse student group.

Delivered in three distinct stages, this course aims to develop confident, professional teaching within a context of both creative and academic practices. The stages are:

- Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) creative contexts
- Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Education
- MA in Creative Education, research project

The Certificate stage (year 1) offers you a stand-alone qualification for teaching in higher education. The Diploma and Research stages (years 2 and 3) introduce pedagogic scholarship and educational research methods and provide opportunity for you to engage in a negotiated research project relevant to your own educational context and sector.

We anticipate that you'll achieve the Certificate stage within one year of study, the Diploma within two years and the Masters after three – though this may be negotiated within the maximum period of registration (six years).

Building professional experience

The MA in Creative Education allows you to reflect on your teaching practice and subject context, in order to explore this in relation to current thinking and research in learning and teaching. The course is founded on the dimensions of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education. It explores key areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values, and explores these within the context of the creative disciplines. The PGCHE offers a route to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Participants have the opportunity to engage with technical and digital innovations relevant to their subject teaching, as well as inform their approaches to teaching through an understanding of creative pedagogy.

How the course is taught

The PGCHE offers a taught model with sessions delivered weekly plus a week-long summer school in July.

The Diploma offers a blend of taught and online components, including three two-day taught events supported by a range of online activities and discussion.

During the Masters research stage, you'll be supported by both a supervisor and regular research forum meetings.

The course is further supported through the online platform, The Learning Space, which hosts course information, readings and resources to support your scholarship.

Course outline

The course comprises three stages across three years, though each stage may be taken as a stand-alone unit (depending on application criteria).

- The PGCHE comprises three modules of 20 credits each. Assessed through a series of assignments, you'll build a teaching portfolio evidencing the areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning.

- The Diploma comprises three 20-credit units intended to extend your professional engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning.

- The Masters research stage offers the opportunity to engage in a year-long negotiated 60-credit supervised research project into an aspect of teaching and/or learning in creative disciplines.

It is possible to take each stage of the MA in Creative Education as a separate entity, or to use each part to progress through the whole course and engage in a Masters-level education research project. This course is intended to support your professional development and encourage your independent expertise and your original value as educators. It focuses on developing individual creative habits and strategies to transfer these ideas within an educational context. You are encouraged to develop an individual line of inquiry of which you are supported through lectures, seminars and tutorials. There is an opportunity to undertake a placement in a relevant work place to gain new experiences and test out developing ideas and activities.

Studio space is provided and you are expected to develop and understand your own creative processes, advance your practice and to communicate ideas and transfer skills within educational or community settings.

Format

On MA Art and Design: Creative Education your independent studio practice is supported by live projects and work placements within your chosen educational field. The process of creatively engaging with others on placements should feed back in to your own studio practice and be contextualised through further workshops or engagement. This will enable you to test your ideas about and explore the methods, techniques and rationales within your work. The aim is to build specialist knowledge, stimulate further enquiry and contextual awareness, and develop new delivery methods of educational engagement through arts based methodologies.

Many teachers undertaking the course are doing so with the support of their employers who see the value of this Continuing Professional Development for the whole school and the individual’s career progression.

Freelance practitioners encounter the course as a means of professionalising their educational and teaching portfolio and peer networking opportunities.

Creative Education students traditionally study while in employment, so following graduation they don’t necessarily move to new workplaces. However, while on the course and after graduating, students tend to move into more senior positions and be involved in greater whole school development with a focus on implementation of creative practices across the curriculum.

Some teachers on leaving the course step out of formal education and become freelance practitioners working in galleries, prisons, youth centres, hospitals and schools. They are supported in establishing business practices and marketing their activities.

Artists leave the course as professional freelancers working in a variety of formal and non-formal workshop or residency settings. It has been developed by academics and creative economy practitioners at Kingston Business School to help you respond to emerging trends and opportunities to realise value in the creative economy.

The programme is designed for individuals who come from creative industries, or have graduated in another discipline, including engineering and humanities. Rather than putting pre-existing management and creative classes on a schedule to form a so-called “new” programme, Audencia and the GSA’s Institute of Design Innovation have jointly designed a customised programme of classes and projects that respond to emerging trends, circumstances and opportunities within the global creative economy.

Every aspect of the programme combines learning in business and management with creative processes and people. Designing today:

Designing Today will help you develop a critical appreciation of the role of design practice and of designers as drivers of social, economic and organisational change. Your final project will be an exhibition. Topics include:

- Exploring service design and organisational design tools and methods
- Seeing social interaction as value creation
- Considering the contemporary role of designers in the area of management: industrial, experience and knowledge economies
- Understanding design not simply as the manufacture of industrial artefacts, but as an activity that creates value

Designing research:

Within Designing Research, you’ll develop an understanding of user-centred design as an ethnographic and engagement-led process of iterative development built upon collaborative working practices and creative refinement and resolution that responds to a variety of contexts. You’ll be evaluated via a project process journal and reflective writing. Components include:

- Formulating design enquiries (open-ended, empirically validated and discursive) that create the possibility of new knowledge and innovative practices or behaviours
- Methods: critical observation, ethnography, STEP analysis, future casting
- Participation in InDI’s two-week International Winter School to gain international, multi-disciplinary teaching and learning experience and develop a personal and professional network of practitioners, researchers and scholars

From idea to application:

From Idea to Application will help you internalise design practice as the material manifestation and evolution of value propositions. You’ll move from collaborative concept generation to product proposal, refinement and validation as understood across a variety of value regimes: manufacture and supply chain, branding and communication, user experience, etc.

The focus will be on the blend of industrial and digital artefacts, experience of use and the cognitive and narrative dimensions of innovative products and their collaborative production.

You’ll be evaluated through a project presentation and exhibition.

International winter school:

Led by the Institute of Design Innovation, the Winter School is an exemplar of our progressive teaching style and offers a method of research and learning that is both bespoke and distinct. The Winter School brings together international students and academics to fashion a new role for design in the exploration of a contemporary challenge during an intense two-week period.

Leading design academics and students from Köln International School of Design (KISD) and Copenhagen’s KADK (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation) will join students and academics of the GSA, Audencia and other institutions from around the globe, forming an international network of diverse disciplines.

This component of the course offers a unique opportunity to examine current issues in a transcultural environment at the GSA’s stunning new campus in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Research and teaching carried out during the Winter School benefit organisations and communities as well as students.

Your project is the culmination of your programme experience and the most ambitious expression of your individual motivation, creativity and ability to deliver. All of our modules are co​re and are delivered over one year full time or two years part time.

Term 1
- Researching Humanities
Researching Humanities will introduce you to research methods at MA level. The module provides a thorough breakdown of research methods across the fields of Creative Writing and English Literature. This module is taught across all of our MA Creative Writing and English Literature pathways and it is also a great opportunity for you to get to know your peers.

- Short Story Writing
Short Story Writing provides a thorough introduction to the short story. This is done through two distinct, but integrated, approaches: a critical analysis of the development of the short story, with particular focus on twentieth century and contemporary writing; and through the creative practice itself. Each week you'll be encouraged to explore key techniques and approaches in your own writing through writing workshops.

- New & Experimental Writing
In New and Experimental Writing you will encounter a range of transgressive texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Starting with the avant-garde, the module proceeds chronologically to the contemporary. We interrogate what it means to transgress aesthetic norms at various points in time and take into consideration historical and cultural context to consider whether there might be a connection between the challenging of literary and social standards. You will be able to approach these texts via a number of methodologies, including theoretical and creative.

Term 2
- Novel Writing
Novel Writing extends and deepens your engagement with fiction writing. The module provides you with a thorough introduction to the novel as a distinct fictional genre focussing on the contemporary. As well as examining key works, you'll also be working on your own creative practice. A key part of the module focuses on the preparation of your work for publication.

- Writing the City
In Writing the City you'll explore representations of urban space through set texts and in your own creative writing. In this module you’ll examine texts that explore the urban in literary fiction, particularly throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

- Critical Practice
Critical Practice prepares you for your dissertation through which you'll be able to submit a substantial body of creative work along with a contextualising critical commentary.

- Dissertation
The Dissertation module is your opportunity to create a portfolio of writing, such as a collection of short stories or an excerpt of a novel that you are working on. The creative work will be accompanied by a critical reflection in which you contextualise your writing within a critical framework and with reference to other texts.

Learning & Teaching​

​Most modules are taught through group workshops and seminars. Some modules will also include individual tutorials and the dissertation module is delivered entirely through one-to-one tutorials with your supervisor.

In workshops and seminars full use is made of University technology and course materials will be delivered and stored through our Virtual Learning Environment. It will be possible for you to access the Virtual Learning Environment remotely and you will be encouraged to do so.

Most modules are 20 or 30 credits although we also have a 10 credit module and the dissertation is worth 60 credits. In a 10 credit module you will receive 11 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 89 hours of independent study. In a 20 credit module you will receive 22 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 178 hours of independent study. In a 30 credit module you will receive 33 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 267 hours of independent study. The 60 credit dissertation is mainly conducted with independent study. ​MA English Literature & Creative Writing is a rewarding taught degree, combining the study of English Literature with the theoretical and practical component of fiction writing.

The MA is taught by published writers and researchers. The course is aimed to support you while you develop and hone your critical and creative writing skills, particularly in the field of fiction. You can take our MA for professional development purposes, in order to enhance your career and to increase your likelihood of publication. The MA will also help you specialise in the areas of creative practice as well as contemporary and historical literature in relation to place and space in order to pave the way for doctoral study.

We have expertise across a number of fields and our academic community is vibrant and dynamic with strong industry links.

The English Literature part of the degree analyses historic and contemporary textual representations of place, theorising cultural practices of location and space. The Creative Writing modules are specifically designed to develop you as a writer of fiction.

One of the great strengths of the programme is its flexibility. MA English Literature and Creative Writing can be studied either full or part time. Modules can be taken individually, allowing you to control the pace and depth of your postgraduate study. Programme delivery is enhanced by the university’s commitment to e-learning​.

Course Content​​

All of our modules are core and are delivered over one year full time or two years part time.
Term 1
- Researching Humanities
Researching Humanities will introduce you to research methods at MA level. The module provides a thorough breakdown of research methods across the fields of Creative Writing and English Literature. This module is taught across all of our MA Creative Writing and English Literature pathways and it is also a great opportunity for you to get to know your peers.

- Short Story Writing
Short Story Writing provides a thorough introduction to the short story. This is done through two distinct, but integrated, approaches: a critical analysis of the development of the short story, with particular focus on twentieth century and contemporary writing; and through the creative practice itself. Each week you'll be encouraged to explore key techniques and approaches in your own writing through writing workshops.

- Literature and Landscapes
In Literature and Landscapes, you’ll examine artistic and literary representations of landscape, and engage with the complex social, cultural and aesthetic factors that contribute to the formation of identity. The module provides a comparative foundation from which you’ll consider representations of the urban encountered in Writing the City.

Term 2
- Novel Writing
Novel Writing extends and deepens your engagement with fiction writing. The module provides you with a thorough introduction to the novel as a distinct fictional genre focussing on the contemporary. As well as examining key works, you'll also be working on your own creative practice. A key part of the module focuses on the preparation of your work for publication.

- Writing the City
In Writing the City you'll explore representations of urban space through set texts and in your own creative writing. In this module you’ll examine texts that explore the urban in literary fiction, particularly throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

- Critical Practice
Critical Practice prepares you for your dissertation through which you'll be able to submit a substantial body of creative work along with a contextualising critical commentary.

- Dissertation
The Dissertation module is your opportunity to create a portfolio of writing, such as a collection of short stories or an excerpt of a novel that you are working on. The creative work will be accompanied by a critical reflection in which you contextualise your writing within a critical framework and with reference to other texts.

Learning & Teaching​

​Most modules are taught through group workshops and seminars. Some modules will also include individual tutorials and the dissertation module is delivered entirely through one-to-one tutorials with your supervisor.

In workshops and seminars full use is made of University technology and course materials will be delivered and stored through our Virtual Learning Environment. It will be possible for you to access the Virtual Learning Environment remotely and you will be encouraged to do so.

Most modules are 20 or 30 credits although we also have a 10-credit module and the dissertation is worth 60 credits.

In a 10-credit module you will receive 11 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 89 hours of independent study. In a 20-credit module you will receive 22 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 178 hours of independent study. In a 30-credit module you will receive 33 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 267 hours of independent study. The 60-credit dissertation is mainly conducted with independent study. Our MA Education: Post-compulsory Education programme offers you the opportunity to learn about and develop your knowledge of current issues from a wide range of perspectives on education and to focus your study towards your particular interest in Post-compulsory Education.

The Year One modules introduce you to the skills you need for Master’s level study and you will develop in-depth knowledge of a range of approaches and methods through which education is investigated. In Year Two there is a choice to adopt a local, national or global perspective. You might choose to study global changes and effects on education or contemporary educational issues and changes at national level, or you might have a specific ‘local’ issue you want to study. This ‘local’ issue might be something relevant to you and your employer if you are employed in a work setting, or it might be some aspect of your special interest in Post-compulsory Education that you choose to examine in more depth. In Year Three you will study the Dissertation/Major Project and the focus for this study will be on Post-compulsory Education. You will have a specific tutor who will supervise this work.

Format

We have designed the MA programmes to support you to engage proactively in education from a theoretical or practical approach, or a combination of the two.

We include creative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment and you are supported by a team of tutors who are active researchers. We have designed the programme to enable you to study with others who are interested in a wide range of educational issues; for example people working in primary, secondary, post-compulsory or higher education; libraries and archive professionals; people working in museum education; people with mentor roles; Early Years teachers, play workers or Children’s Centre managers.

The course engages you with current issues and debates in education, enabling you to gain critical awareness and understanding and to develop new insights. You will engage in research and advanced scholarship in the discipline and will develop as a self-directed, independent learner who is able to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively.

Dissertation: Post-compulsory Education

This module is the culmination of the MA Education. It engages students in a substantial piece of research focused on a topic that is relevant to an educational context and manageable within the time and credit constraints of a Master’s dissertation. The focus and nature of the investigation will be agreed with your supervisor for example it could be an investigation into the use of the ‘flipped classroom’ approach to teaching and learning in undergraduate study.

Major Project: Post-compulsory Education

This module is the culmination of the MA Education. It engages students in a substantial piece of research investigation and artefact development on a topic relevant to an educational context and manageable within the time and credit constraints of a Master’s dissertation. The focus, nature of the investigation and intended output will be negotiated and agreed with your supervisor. For example the written component could be an investigation into a self-review tool you have designed to support student self-assessment including a dissemination strategy you have developed, which may include a poster presenting your findings and good practice guidelines you have developed to enhance future practice in the setting.

Our Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Arts Education is for staff in Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) institutions who have either completed the Graduate Certificate in Creative Arts Education, or who have more than three years' full-time or equivalent teaching experience.

The course is registered at our Epsom campus but sessions take place alternately at UCA Epsom and UCA Rochester.

To apply for this course you must be working in a teaching or supporting learning context for a minimum of one day a week across the year. However, if you've successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Creative Arts Education while undertaking a one day per week voluntary (unpaid) teaching placement with an appropriate course, you may be able to continue on this basis - subject to the approval of the Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Arts Education course leader and relevant subject course leader or department manager.

The course is delivered between September and April on alternate Wednesdays (10am - 5pm) at our Epsom and Rochester campuses in rotation.

Careers

Creative practices are at the core of all professional fields where people are engaged in learning. This includes those working as teachers and lecturers in schools, colleges and universities, but also those working in the arts, health, social care, justice, heritage, sport and leisure and organisations in the public, private and third sector.

Why Study Creative Practices in Education with us?

Having a direct link between practice and theory between the arts, education and the professions is an innovative element of the course. Staffing is combined across academic faculties, providing you with the opportunity to enhance your subject knowledge. The interdisciplinary elements of the course will allow you to draw on expertise in participatory drama and performance, fine art, dance, music, sport and PE and organisational learning within a professional context.

What will I learn?

You will have the opportunity to pursue practical individual projects, in which you will study the creative process and how work might be documented for dissemination and use in future professional contexts. This may include artistic practice, but also artful inquiry, encouraging investigation and research into an emerging field of work and study.

Your creative practice would not be limited to traditional arts subjects – for example, a humanities teacher or rugby coach could enhance their practice through creative engagement.

How will I be taught?

Workshops, seminars, lectures and specialist facilities across our faculties encourage the exploration of ideas, in a wide variety of practice-based disciplines.

Modules focus on the professional and theoretical contexts of process and/or performance of: drama, fine art, dance, music, and sport and PE, including research methods; they also encourage an interrogation of personal and peer practice. The modules mostly run as weekend schools on Friday evening and all day Saturday.
Contact hours are two hours on Fridays and six and a half hours on Saturdays.

How will I be assessed?

The MA in Creative Practices in Education defines assessment as a process that appraises an individual’s knowledge, understanding, abilities or skills. The course assesses not only academic skills but also other skills and competencies, including developing advanced skills as creative practitioners, performers, performance makers and visual artists.

The range of assessment approaches includes a combination of practical and written assessments. Assessment methods across the MA have been selected to enable students to develop their knowledge and skills of creative professional practice using an appropriate critical and analytical framework within which to situate and evaluate their own concepts and creative and professional practice.

The MA Education (Additional Learning Needs) has two pathways. There are generic SEN/ALN modules or, candidates may elect to study the specific British Dyslexia Association accredited modules to achieve the Approved Teacher Status (ATS) and then the Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA) awards.

The MA Education has been designed to meet the requirements of the Welsh Government’s priorities for education and caters for a wide range of professionals who are involved in delivering education in a variety of organisations and related settings. Partners involved in the design of this programme included: local authorities; FE colleges; voluntary and community organisations, nurse educators; headteachers; teachers and current students.

Whatever setting you come from, you will be challenged to extend your thinking about the subjects you select, deepen your understanding of the content and theoretical foundations of the area and, be encouraged to reflect critically upon how this will impact on your practice. All assignments will be context related to enable you to implement many of the ideas discussed and to evaluate their success.
