The MA Creative and Cultural Industries Management course offers a practical and vocational approach to working in this rapidly developing sector. Enhanced programme flexibility enables you to select a culture sector specialism to suit your interests, which you will take alongside caption: Hadrians Wallcore cultural and creative industries management modules.

The four specialisms available are Music, Festivals and Events; Arts and Media; Cultural Heritage and Museums; and Galleries and Visual Arts. Options are selected during the course Induction phase.

Throughout the duration of your studies you will be encouraged to develop your own research skills to advance your understanding of the complex contexts and debates of the cultural and creative industries, and how these practices apply from a range of theoretical perspectives.

Cultural & Creative Industries is a unique interdisciplinary programme that draws on studies in cultural theories, cultural history, digital culture, management, geography, cultural policy, gender and fashion and makes use of London arts and cultural links with Tate Modern, Southbank Centre and the British Film Institute. Leads to careers in major cultural and creative organisations and smaller creative businesses.

- Course purpose -

Provides a critical understanding of the cultural and creative industries for graduates seeking a career in the arts or creative industries or for professionals wishing to enhance their existing knowledge and career prospects. Can also prepare students for doctoral research in culture, media and creative industries. Meanwhile, it is important to know that we are not a media, communications or journalism studies programme. This module will address the interrelationships between creative media industries and a variety of contemporary social and cultural phenomena in the context of globalisation.

- Practice as research and development: Project initiation
You'll be expected to initiate the research and development of a coherent and critically informed piece of work.

- Creative industries placement
You'll apply your academic learning at postgraduate level within a practical context. This will usually be a work experience placement within the cultural industries.

Semester 2:
- Researching the media industries
This module will provide you with the research skills required to engage in meaningful graduate level research in the cultural and creative industries. The module will focus on two aspects of study: the theories and methods of media research and the social, media, cultural and policy contexts of research.The module will prepare you for the final research paper.

- Research paper
The Research Paper is the summative element of the MA degree. The Research Paper gives you the opportunity to conduct original research in an area of your degree or field of interest.

- Practice as research and development: Project production

Placements

The course offers you the opportunity to take part in significant work experience placements in London, the UK or possibly abroad. Both the preparation for the placement, which we guide you through, and the placement itself are assessed modules as part of the course. Our positioning in Central London, and our developed industry links means that we are exceptionally placed for students taking part on the placements.

Working with an individual experienced mentor on a project is also an alternative to the traditional placement.

Past placements include: Royal National Theatre Archive, Golley Slater Marketing, Siblings Together Charity, Saatchi Gallery.

Teaching and learning

The course offers one-to-one supervisions in three modules.There are regular additional support events, such as visits to galleries and performance viewings. The course now boasts a new shared production office, which allows to you to work on projects collaboratively in an environment similar to that which you could expect after graduation.

As digitisation transforms the media industries, from music streaming to on-demand TV, there has been an increasing recognition of the economic and cultural value of art, museums, video games and 'heritage'. This programme offers the unique opportunity to critically analyse these developments in a fully global context, across the full range of School of Arts courses in Media, Music and Art and Archaeology.

Course detail

Students can tailor their studies to focus on particular regions, art forms or themes, choosing from the wide array of courses that reflect the unique regional focus available at SOAS, and gain access to world-leading experts on the music, culture and traditions of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Alongside critical analysis and regional expertise students can choose from a number of practical hands-on courses, in sound recording, podcasting and broadcasting, that will enable them to enhance their skill-set.

This course has been designed for those seeking to work in some capacity in the creative and cultural sector - either as an artist or producer, or in cultural policy, development or analysis. It also suits anyone looking to establish a research profile in Global Creative and Cultural Industries.

You will have access to a wealth of study resources including the SOAS Library, one of the world's most important academic libraries, attracting scholars from across the globe.

Format and assessment

The MA has a core component comprising two half-unit courses, the first (‘Analytical Approaches to the Global Creative and Cultural Industries’) taken by all students, and the second allowing students to develop their expertise in a ‘pathway’, chosen from:

• ‘The Music Business’
• ‘Asia and Africa on Display: Objects, Exhibitions and Transculturation’
• ‘Studies in Global Media and Post-National Communication’
• ‘Global Film Industries’.

Practical/skills courses can then be chosen in multimedia (film/editing), sound recording, and digital and broadcasting communications; while optional, one of these will be required if a student elects to take the optional half-unit course ‘Directed Study in Industry’ but lacks appropriate skills training on entry.

‘Directed Study in Industry’ allows students to undertake an internship with an institution, organisation or enterprise.

Additional regional and theoretical courses are available from existing School of Arts and other SOAS MA/MMus programmes.

The Dissertation will be on a topic relating to the creative and cultural industries. It may either be on a theoretical topic or develop from the ‘pathway’ chosen by the student, and it has the option to incorporate multimedia materials.

Suitability

Students will likely fall into two types:

• The first group will typically be interested in pursuing careers as practitioners, managers, consultants, policy advisers and entrepreneurs in the creative and cultural industries in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Such students will typically take advantage of the potentials to hone practical/core skills, to develop their knowledge base about creative and cultural industries in a global context, and to maximise the ‘Directed Study in Industry’ opportunity.

• The second group will typically be more concerned with developing academic research in the creative and cultural sectors, and the intersections between industry, cultural policy and international development. Such students will most likely concentrate their programme of study on the regional and theoretical courses available.

The MA, then, is suitable for those seeking employment as practitioners, managers, consultants, policy advisers and entrepreneurs in the creative and cultural industries, and for those who aspire to a Research degree.

Programme structure

The taught element of this programme consists of six core courses, totalling 100 credits, and a slot in semester 2 in which you can take 1 or 2 course/s of your choice (totalling 20 credits). This structure allows you to develop key sector management skills and knowledge, while also providing space to tailor the programme to suit your interests and ambitions. You can choose two 10 credit options from a range offered by the Adam Smith Business School, strengthening the management component of your degree. Alternatively you can select an approved 20 credit option from another subject area.

The teaching on the two largest core courses, Creative Industries and Cultural Policy (semester 1) and Contemporary Cultural Production (semester 2) is supported by a series of regular guest lectures, in which we invite practitioners, policy makers and key influencers from across the creative sector to share their perspectives.

Assessment is based primarily on individual written essays and assignments but also involves presentation. You will undertake academic research essays and report writing tailored to an industry brief, ensuring you develop a range of writing skills relevant to both academic and professional contexts.

In the summer period (April to August), you will complete a research dissertation (worth 60 credits) that will enable you to develop, investigate and present a substantial and original project of personal interest. The academic team within the Centre for Cultural Policy Research have extensive experience of conducting empirical studies within the creative sector, and are thus able to support a wide range of industry and policy related topics and research approaches.

The Fashion Pathway of the MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

(ii) Internship

You will undertake an internship within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of your particular pathway.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You'll be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You'll also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. The creative industries is a dynamic and complex field that changes rapidly due to globalisation and the continuous development of new and exciting technologies. At Radboud University we look at many areas of the creative industry, such as:

- Fashion: Fashion is a commercial, creative and cultural industry producing material objects like textile and garments, but also more conceptual products like trends, and beauty ideals. The glamour of fashion may lure us, but it is one of the most polluting industries. Currently, the field is characterized by incredible speed, rapid turnover, and high waste. In the future, can the fashion industry retain its glamour while becoming more sustainable?

- Media: The contemporary mediascape is dominated by global conglomerates with companies in various industries, such as film studios, sports and news channels, and game developers, to name a few. As a result, the industry has transformed into a cultural economy where only six ‘media giants', including Disney and Time Warner, control 90% of everything we read, watch and listen to. We will look at how the industry shapes both the form and the content of contemporary media productions.

- Tourism: The rise of mass tourism in the second part of the nineteenth century has been called the most important migratory movement in the history of mankind. We will study how art and culture are used to stimulate the tourist industry, and discuss the role of artists in the phenomenon. We examine renowned artists, as well as behind-the-scenes designers of sites, and tourists themselves.

- Education: Creativity and the so-called ‘21st Century Skills' in education are critical for contemporary post-industrial societies. Individuals are also becoming more driven to expand their cultural intellect; a factor that is sometimes used to promote educational goods and services. For examples, museums are becoming more interactive to help visitors understand the content better.

Structure

You'll be supervised by a full-time member of staff, generally agreed during the preliminary discussions regarding your research with the ICCE Director.

The MPhil programme offers the opportunity for the student to continue their research to a PhD. PhD theses are up to a maximum of 100,000 words.

You should aim to complete and submit your thesis within the time-frame specified by Goldsmiths. This is normally three to four years for full-time students and four to six years for part-time.

A thesis for the award of MPhil may be submitted after two years of full-time or three years of part-time study. Registration can be changed from full-time to part-time status, and vice-versa, with the agreement of your supervisor. You'll be required to complete the appropriate form for change of status available from the Admissions Office or from the ICCE Administrator.

Research training programme

All students enrolled in the MPhil programme are initially required to attend a weekly seminar in research methodology conducted by the Goldsmiths Graduate School. These seminars are designed to bring together research students with diverse interests in a cooperative and stimulating environment.

Its objectives include training students for the Spring Review Week, written and oral presentations, preparation for upgrading procedures and publication of articles.

Assessment

Examination is by thesis and a viva.

How to apply

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. The choice of topic may be influenced by the current research in the department or the requirements of an external funding body.

If you wish to study on a part-time basis, you should also indicate how many hours a week you intend to devote to research, whether this will be at evenings or weekends, and for how many hours each day.

Your research proposal

Along with your application details, personal statement and academic reference, you should also upload a research proposal at the point of application.

This should be in the form of a clear, concise and coherent statement of the proposed area of research of at least five pages and no more than seven pages of A4 and should include:

1) A working title for your research project.

2) A clear statement about what you want to work on and why it is important, interesting, relevant and realistic. Detail your main research objectives; these could be articulated as hypotheses, propositions, research questions, or problems to solve. What difference do you think your research will make? Is your research achievable in the time allocated? (e.g. 3 years full‐time)

3) Some background knowledge and context of the area in which you wish to work, including key literature, key people, key research findings. Think about how your work links to the work of others in the same or related fields?

4) Some consideration of the methods/approach you might use. Describe how will you conduct your research? Will you use existing theories, new methods/approaches or develop new methods/approaches?

5) Some indication of the strategy and timetable for your research project and any research challenges you may face. What would be the main stages of your project and what would you be expecting to do in each year of your PhD?

6) A short list of the key references which support your research proposal. References should be listed in an appropriate convention (e.g. Harvard). Such references should be used throughout your research proposal to demonstrate that you have read and understood the work of others. Other relevant material that you are aware of, but not actually used in writing your proposal, can also be added as a bibliography.

There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. The Media and Communications Pathway of the MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

Modules & Structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered in media for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module I: Theories of the Culture Industry: work, creativity and precariousness- 30 credits
Module II: Creative Practice- 30 credits
Module III: Entrepreneurial Modelling- 30 credits

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production within one creative industry sector

You can choose from two strands for this module (i) College-Based and (ii) Internship.

(i) College-based

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline, although taking into account the cross-over with other areas – including Performing Arts (theatre and dance), Visual Arts, Music, Design, Media & Communications, Publishing and Computing. As well as studying producing companies, this would also include consideration of creative agencies relating to the above. The programme will start with the above areas but in this modular system can easily expand to include other subjects.

Computing offers Sector overview: Games and Interactive Entertainment Industries.

Design offers Sector overview consisting of: Component A – Design and Futuring, and Component B – Business and Design, or an industry placement.

Drama offers A Sector overview: Cultural Policy and Practice combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

Fashion offers Designing Fashion, taught by the Department of Design (subject to approval).

Media and Communications offers Either an industry placement, assessed by placement report, or an industry contextual module: Media Landscapes.

Music offers Sector overview of Music industries (a) combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

(ii) Internship

The creative industries and cultural sector are continuing to grow at a rapid rate. In the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE) we specialise in preparing our students to understand, manage and innovate in these fascinating areas.

Entrance requirements:

You should normally have an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in design, architecture, art, computing, engineering, education, social sciences or any other discipline that has a demonstrable relationship to design and/or research. Applicants with relevant work experience will also be considered. You must demonstrate in your written application and in interview that you have a capacity for creative and cultural entrepreneurship, and that you are able to meet the intellectual demands of the programme. Your application will not be considered unless it includes a design portfolio which should be uploaded electronically as part of your main application.

If your first language is not English you need a minimum score of 7.0 in IELTS (including 7.0 in the written element) or equivalent.
