Structure

You'll be supervised by a full-time member of staff, generally agreed during the preliminary discussions regarding your research with the ICCE Director.

The MPhil programme offers the opportunity for the student to continue their research to a PhD. PhD theses are up to a maximum of 100,000 words.

You should aim to complete and submit your thesis within the time-frame specified by Goldsmiths. This is normally three to four years for full-time students and four to six years for part-time.

A thesis for the award of MPhil may be submitted after two years of full-time or three years of part-time study. Registration can be changed from full-time to part-time status, and vice-versa, with the agreement of your supervisor. You'll be required to complete the appropriate form for change of status available from the Admissions Office or from the ICCE Administrator.

Research training programme

All students enrolled in the MPhil programme are initially required to attend a weekly seminar in research methodology conducted by the Goldsmiths Graduate School. These seminars are designed to bring together research students with diverse interests in a cooperative and stimulating environment.

Its objectives include training students for the Spring Review Week, written and oral presentations, preparation for upgrading procedures and publication of articles.

Assessment

Examination is by thesis and a viva.

How to apply

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. The choice of topic may be influenced by the current research in the department or the requirements of an external funding body.

If you wish to study on a part-time basis, you should also indicate how many hours a week you intend to devote to research, whether this will be at evenings or weekends, and for how many hours each day.

Your research proposal

Along with your application details, personal statement and academic reference, you should also upload a research proposal at the point of application.

This should be in the form of a clear, concise and coherent statement of the proposed area of research of at least five pages and no more than seven pages of A4 and should include:

1) A working title for your research project.

2) A clear statement about what you want to work on and why it is important, interesting, relevant and realistic. Detail your main research objectives; these could be articulated as hypotheses, propositions, research questions, or problems to solve. What difference do you think your research will make? Is your research achievable in the time allocated? (e.g. 3 years full‐time)

3) Some background knowledge and context of the area in which you wish to work, including key literature, key people, key research findings. Think about how your work links to the work of others in the same or related fields?

4) Some consideration of the methods/approach you might use. Describe how will you conduct your research? Will you use existing theories, new methods/approaches or develop new methods/approaches?

5) Some indication of the strategy and timetable for your research project and any research challenges you may face. What would be the main stages of your project and what would you be expecting to do in each year of your PhD?

6) A short list of the key references which support your research proposal. References should be listed in an appropriate convention (e.g. Harvard). Such references should be used throughout your research proposal to demonstrate that you have read and understood the work of others. Other relevant material that you are aware of, but not actually used in writing your proposal, can also be added as a bibliography.

The Theatre and Performance Pathway of the MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

Modules & Structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered in performing arts for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module I: Theories of the Culture Industry: work, creativity and precariousness- 30 credits
Module II: Creative Practice- 30 credits
Module III: Entrepreneurial Modelling- 30 credits

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production within one creative industry sector

You can choose from two strands for this module (i) College-Based and (ii) Internship.

(i) College-based

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline, although taking into account the cross-over with other areas – including Performing Arts (theatre and dance), Visual Arts, Music, Design, Media & Communications, Publishing and Computing. As well as studying producing companies, this would also include consideration of creative agencies relating to the above. The programme will start with the above areas but in this modular system can easily expand to include other subjects.

Computing offers Sector overview: Games and Interactive Entertainment Industries.

Design offers Sector overview consisting of: Component A – Design and Futuring, and Component B – Business and Design, or an industry placement.

Drama offers A Sector overview: Cultural Policy and Practice combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

Fashion offers Designing Fashion, taught by the Department of Design (subject to approval).

Media and Communications offers Either an industry placement, assessed by placement report, or an industry contextual module: Media Landscapes.

Music offers Sector overview of Music industries (a) combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

(ii) Internship

You will undertake an internship within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. The programme will also equip those who wish to work within organisations that develop the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses with the capacity to flourish in a variety of contexts.

Since the late 1990s governments and policy makers have increasingly recognised the importance of the contribution of culture to economic growth and other social benefits. Although culture is often associated with big firms and institutions most of the activity in the sector tends to be small scale. That is particularly true at the creative and enterprising phase of cultural processes. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of the creative phase is essential for people who wish to contribute to the production of culture, and
for the development of the cultural sector more generally. The course emphasises the importance of change and unpredictability
for the growth of the creative and cultural sector and locates that in broader social, economic and political processes.

The key aims of the MA are to deliver a qualification that:

- explains the contribution of the cultural and creative sectors to innovation, enterprise and employment;
- develops practical skills for the development of ideas into cultural and creative projects, enterprises and businesses;
- investigates the challenges and issues affecting the cultural and creative sector at an individual, national and global level;
- critically examines the political, economic and social dimensions of the cultural and creative sectors and
- provides an opportunity for students to collaborate with each other and with academic staff, and to connect with cultural and creative professionals from across the public and private sectors.

The course is designed for students who wish to develop and combine practical and intellectual skills at masters level. It will enable you to work individually and in small groups and require you to take initiative and responsibility for your individual development. The course is delivered by staff with both practical and research interests in the creative and cultural sector, including digital media production, theatre and performance, costume design, radio, popular music, contemporary art, culture industry and economy, cultural policy and management. It is supported by guest staff from both the public and private sector to provide the additional benefit of experience and insight.

The MA will particularly interest those who wish to develop careers in the cultural and creative sectors. A degree or background
that is related to the creative and cultural sector is relevant to be considered for admission but we welcome applications from graduates from other disciplines who can demonstrate that they have the relevant experience and motivation.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching combines lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects and covers a broad range of topics informed by research and a creative approach to problems. Performance is assessed through a variety of methods including essays, reports, presentations, portfolios and a dissertation or project. The final dissertation or project is designed to develop individual interest and curiosity. Class sizes will be around 15 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Normally course modules require eight hours contact time per week. In most instances this will be delivered across two days full-time, one day part-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies

Course staff have a range of formal and informal relationships with individuals and organisations across the culture and creative sector who contribute advice, support and teaching.

It is designed to develop your critical and analytical skills and your understanding of the ways in which policy trends, emerging business models and new working practices are combining to reshape the sector.

Programme structure

The taught element of this programme consists of six core courses, totalling 100 credits, and a slot in semester 2 in which you can take 1 or 2 course/s of your choice (totalling 20 credits). This structure allows you to develop key sector management skills and knowledge, while also providing space to tailor the programme to suit your interests and ambitions. You can choose two 10 credit options from a range offered by the Adam Smith Business School, strengthening the management component of your degree. Alternatively you can select an approved 20 credit option from another subject area.

The teaching on the two largest core courses, Creative Industries and Cultural Policy (semester 1) and Contemporary Cultural Production (semester 2) is supported by a series of regular guest lectures, in which we invite practitioners, policy makers and key influencers from across the creative sector to share their perspectives.

Assessment is based primarily on individual written essays and assignments but also involves presentation. You will undertake academic research essays and report writing tailored to an industry brief, ensuring you develop a range of writing skills relevant to both academic and professional contexts.

In the summer period (April to August), you will complete a research dissertation (worth 60 credits) that will enable you to develop, investigate and present a substantial and original project of personal interest. The academic team within the Centre for Cultural Policy Research have extensive experience of conducting empirical studies within the creative sector, and are thus able to support a wide range of industry and policy related topics and research approaches.

Overview

Half of the programme is made up of English for Academic Purposes modules, concentrating on different areas of language development, made up of:

UNESCO

aims to impart the necessary competencies and skills in the conservation and promotion of World Heritage Sites and in the conceptualization of sustainable projects designed around a wide spectrum of cultural activities in the fields of natural and cultural heritage, creative industries, museums and tourism. It explores the economic, social, institutional and legal considerations that govern the categories of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
It also emphasis strategic management competencies for the preservation and promotion of these sites as well as monitoring the efficacy and adequacy of site management plans and associated cultural projects.

The Master has a strong international faculty including Professor Walter Santagata from University of Turin, Professor David Throsby from Macquarie University, Professor Allen Scott from UCLA, Professor Andy Pratt from Kings College, Professor
Françoise Benhamou from University Paris III, Professor Xavier Greffe from University Paris I-Sorbonne, and Professor Helmut Anheier from Heidelberg University. Officials from UNESCO, the World Bank and the ILO also teach on the Master.

CURRICULUM OF THE MASTER

The Master is divided into three major learning cycles. The first cycle consists of distance learning modules supported by a tutoring service. The second cycle is a face-to-face learning period that will be held in Turin, Italy, at the International Training Centre of the ILO. The third cycle is a research and study period during which the students may attend internships and are expected to finalize their final projects.

MODULE 1- Distance learning.

The introductory distance learning phase of the course lasts 10 weeks and is tutor-assisted. It includes two foundation modules on Cultural Heritage and Economic Development and the World Heritage System and Heritage Management.

MODULE 2- Culture and Economic Development

This module will introduce the participants to the following topics:
• The value chain of cultural and natural sites;
• Cultural capital and the theory of sustainable development;
• The role of culture in local development;
• Cultural and natural districts, property rights and sustainable economic development;
• Governance and cultural policies in cultural/creative industries;
• Micro enterprises, local entrepreneurship and micro fi nance;
• Gender-related economics; International organizations and cultural projects;
• Culture and natural resources as a strategic engines for local development.

MODULE 3 - Project Management in the Cultural Field

This module is intended to upgrade participants’ competences in the disciplines of project cycle design and management. . Ample opportunity will be given to the participants to practice the development of the project logical framework and project appraisal techniques. The role of international development agencies in promoting cultural initiatives will be explored, including their respective procurement guidelines and project supervision procedures.

MODULE 4 - Cultural Sectors and Creative Industries

This module investigates the main cultural sectors that come into play in cultural policies, namely:
• Management of museums;
• monuments and archaeological sites;
• Performing arts;
• Creative and Cultural industries;
• Economics of cultural tourism;
• National Parks and Protected areas.
Particular attention will be devoted to the role of International Agencies that deal with cultural programmes including the presentation of the relevant UNESCO Conventions

Careers:

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, such as music, media, theatre, design, or computer games, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. The programme will also equip those who wish to work within organisations that develop the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses with the capacity to flourish in a variety of contexts.

Skills:

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Entrance requirements:

You should normally have an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in design, architecture, art, computing, engineering, education, social sciences or any other discipline that has a demonstrable relationship to design and/or research. Applicants with relevant work experience will also be considered. You must demonstrate in your written application and in interview that you have a capacity for creative and cultural entrepreneurship, and that you are able to meet the intellectual demands of the programme. Your application will not be considered unless it includes a design portfolio which should be uploaded electronically as part of your main application.

This innovative programme explores how arts and creative enterprises work in theory and practice, as well as the impact they can have on individuals and communities.

You’ll gain an understanding of the policy contexts of creative work, analyse and apply theories of art and culture and examine the cultural industries that comprise the arts, including theatre, performance, dance, opera, crafts, and museums.

Then you’ll choose from optional modules to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans, such as arts management or culture and place, and investigate topics like audience engagement and cultural policy. You may even have the chance to undertake a placement or a consultancy project for an external cultural organisation.

You’ll be taught by leading researchers in a city with a diverse cultural landscape. Whether you’ve already started your career or see yourself moving into the sector, this programme will give you the knowledge and skills to support your ambitions.

The degree is also available to study part-time over 24 months. The part-time MA may be of special interest to those who are working in related fields as part of their career development.

Course Content

Core modules in Semester One will lay the foundations of the programme. You’ll explore different theoretical approaches to understand the relationships between culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship, learning about cultural industries and how public policy impacts on cultural development.

To help you focus your studies in the areas that suit your interests and career plans, you’ll choose one of two optional modules which allow you to specialise in either the relationship between culture and place or management and leadership in the arts and cultural industries.

You’ll then choose another optional module to complement or broaden your studies. You could focus on topics such as audience engagement or cultural policy, or you may be able to gain experience of consultancy working in teams to complete a brief for an external organisation. If you select the Creative Work module, you could spend two weeks on a placement in a cultural organisation as the basis of a small-scale research project.

The MSc in Cultural Studies and Entrepreneurship is a collaboration between the Department of Cultural Studies and the Nottingham University Business School. Its aims are to provide students with a critical understanding of cultural studies, its principles and practices, and with the skills to explore various models for the development of creative enterprises. Students aquire an understanding of the importance of the culture industry and market analysis while developing an ability to carry out financial analysis of a cultural enterprise. They become fluent in the financial, marketing and managerial aspects of the culture industry and gain knowledge of leading edge culture industry fields. They come to appreciate the interrelationships that exist between fundamental research and its practical application, and acquire the critical, analytical, technological and business background to enable them to make a significant contribution to today's cultural and creative sector of the economy.

Course Overview

The MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship is delivered on the UWTSD London campus and at Tileyard Studios, King’s Cross, London. Tileyard Studios is the largest professional music community in Europe featuring 82 recording studios, 110 entertainment businesses and the new Tileyard Education Centre.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, held at Tileyard Studios in partnership with Notting Hill Music and sponsors, an unrivalled masterclass series, a one-to-one electronic mentoring program, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of industry-centric events held on site at Tileyard Studios.

The MSc in Creative Technologies and Enterprise (CTE) is designed for people who have a grounding in computing and business skills (whether through study or experience), and are seeking to develop their creative and research abilities in order to adapt to the digital economy or prepare themselves for future research in this field. Future industries depend upon people who are equipped with creative ideas, entrepreneurial skills and technological knowledge. This course will prepare you for a rapidly-changing global digital economy in which your ability to adapt on-the-fly and make creative contributions will be your major resource.

The course has been planned with enterprise partners and offers opportunities for national and international placements throughout. It makes use of Bath Spa University’s close links with Hartham Park, with its superb digital infrastructure and many linked businesses.

The course is connected to the Integrated Master’s in Creative Technologies and Enterprise, which is a four-year programme from Bachelors level through to full Master’s. This ‘stand-alone’ Master’s has a number of features in common with that course, but also some differences, such as the expectation of prior computing and business experience, and the presence of research as a particular feature of the programme.

Underpinning your skills and knowledge will be a solid grounding in entrepreneurship, project management, software programming, and creative thinking. Through a series of creative projects you will have the opportunity to work with commercial and industrial partners to advance your understanding and experience the sector.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course will typically include national and international placements, giving you the opportunity to develop your existing skills in whatever sector of the digital and creative industries to which you may currently be committed. You will be undertaking self-devised individual or collaborative creative projects. There will be a considerable degree of autonomy associated with these projects, but they will all be the subject of prior negotiation with academic staff and industrial partners.

You will be taught research methods and undertake your own research project. Research in CTE is inherently transdisciplinary, which creates particular challenges when considering appropriate methodologies. The course will explore these fully, looking at quantitative and qualitative methods, action research and other creative methods.

You will seek to understand, through both practice and theory, the nature of both “creativity” and “innovation”. These are crucial concepts whose definition is the subject if much discussion and research. The course sets out to explore them so that you will be able to apply the knowledge that results in the professional domain. This aspect of the course is characterised by a shared sense of discovery as we work towards a full realisation.

You will encounter emerging technologies that will place you at the cutting-edge of developments in the digital economy. You will also build a solid base of research skills and methods that will provide you with the means to contribute to Research and Development or to develop your own research projects.

MODULES

Emerging Technologies: 30 credits
This module aims to develop students' knowledge of, and to provide hands-on practical engagement with, emerging creative technologies. These include cutting-edge developments in hardware, software and communications as appropriate. Significant input to the module is provided by enterprise partners working in creative technology research and development. Assessment is by critical analysis and seminar presentation.

Research Methods: 30 credits
This module provides a grounding in research methods for creative technologies projects, including the dynamics of creativity, offering students methodologies and techniques to support and develop their learning throughout their course of study. The module will cover literature reviews, creative practice research methodologies and practice-led research, as well as critical and scholarly approaches to analysis, quantitative and qualitative approaches including laboratory evaluation, surveys, case studies and action research. Students will be given techniques in methods of collaborative and cooperative working as well as systems of the development of creative ideas and research. Assessment is by critical commentary and group presentation.

Specialist Option: 30 credits
This provides an opportunity to select a module from a portfolio offered across Bath Spa University at this level.

Research Project: 30 credits
This module will give students a practical understanding of the different methods of undertaking, disseminating, and presenting research projects in creative technologies, as well as practical experience in presenting their research to an audience. The module also aims to encourage students to think about how their own creative technologies work is best communicated to a range of different audiences, ranging from academics, industry specialists and the general public. The module will consist of a series of taught lectures followed by tutorial support, while students will work towards an assessed presentation of their own research.

Industry Showcase (Major Project): 60 credits
This module aims to develop students’ individual and collaborative creative abilities in the digital economy. The module comprises a number of negotiated projects that are normally collaborative and may be undertaken locally or internationally as industrial placements or internships, which will result in a major industry showcase event. Assessment is by contribution to the showcase, portfolio of work and personal journal. There is a larger 90 credit major project which is only available in special circumstances, where students have already acquired the requisite skills and knowledge contained in one of the taught modules.
