Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology ground-breaking programme open to both dental technicians and dentists. Teaches clinical and technical aspects of facial prostheses; ocular prostheses; orbital and skull cranioplasties and obturators. - Course purpose -

Ground breaking programme open to both dental technicians and dentists. For both overseas and UK applicants the programme provides training to a specialist level in maxillofacial and craniofacial technology.

- Course format and assessment -

Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, as follows:

- Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of maxillofacial and craniofacial technology, usually assessed by written examination;

- One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, a clinical/technical log and an oral examination;

- One research module, involving the submission of a research project report including a literature review, with an oral defence of the research.

What you will study

The MSc will be taught full-time over one year (September to August). Exams on the taught element of the programme will be held at the end of semester one. Essays and assignments will also contribute to the final mark, and the dissertation will be assessed through the production of a thesis and a viva exam.

The MSc Oral Biology is aimed at dental or science graduates who are either early in their careers or wish to establish themselves as oral biologists within dental schools. Oral Biology is a recognised discipline in many dental schools worldwide. Degree information

Year One provides students with the basic knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches some of the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting. Year Two encourages more advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance. Year Three consolidates the learning to date and provides the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of seven core modules (120 credits), and a research project/dissertation (60 credits). The PG Diploma consists of seven core modules (120 credits); two years part-time. The PG Certificate consists of four core modules (60 credits); one year part-time. The first cohort of students on the Paediatric Dentistry MSc are due to graduate in 2016, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available.

However, destinations of recent graduates of the institute’s Paediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate (which this new programme supersedes) include: specialist registrar; senior dental officer, community dentistry; and clinical lead for dental salaried services.

Employability
As well as enhancing your clinical skills, this programme also supports the development of transferable skills such as the use of electronic resources, giving presentations and academic writing.

This is the only blended learning MSc programme to provide further training in paediatric dentistry, designed to support working dentists. Why study Anatomy & Advanced Forensic Anthropology at Dundee?

Forensic anthropology is the analysis of human remains for the medico-legal purpose of establishing identity. The discipline has adopted a pivotal role in UK and International investigations in cases of inter-personal violence and homicide, repatriation, mass disasters and war crimes.

Recent mass fatality incidents have highlighted the requirement for national and international disaster victim identification (DVI) capability, and cemented the forensic anthropologist’s role as a significant component within the multi-disciplinary response facility.

Traditionally the forensic anthropologist has dealt with human skeletal remains resulting from unexplained deaths; this professional definition is unrealistically restrictive given the multi-disciplinary nature of the demands of human identification in the twenty-first century. In particular there is a significant requirement for anatomically-trained forensic anthropologists who are competent in dealing with both soft and hard tissues in order to fulfil the requirements of DVI deployment.

Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification

This course is taught within the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identfication (CAHID) and is located in the Medical Sciences Institute at the University of Dundee, Scotland.

The aim of this programme is to provide training in anatomically-based forensic anthropology, and specifically to provide advanced training in musculoskeletal anatomy, juvenile osteology, comparative forensic osteology and DVI training.

What you will study

Course Structure:
This is a one year full time taught Masters programme in which all modules are compulsory. The research dissertation can be in the form of original laboratory research in an area pertinent to anatomy and forensic anthropology.

Human Gross Anatomy (Semesters 1 & 2):
Provides the opportunity to conduct whole body dissection, with particular emphasis on functional and musculoskeletal anatomy
Exposure to human form and function with direct relevance to the identification process
Only institution in the UK offering the opportunity to dissect cadavers which have been embalmed using the Thiel soft-fix method, which provides life-like preservation of the soft tissues.

Developmental Juvenile Osteology (Semester 1):

Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) training (Semesters 1 & 2):
Provides a thorough understanding of the DVI process in the UK and abroad
Developed by experienced practitioners, it is based on the National DVI Training course for the UK DVI team
Delivers a robust theoretical underpinning for anyone undertaking DVI work on a practical basis.

MSc Research Project (Semester 3):

How you will be taught

Teaching will take place in Cairo, Egypt using the facilities of the ASCDE.
The programme will run concurrently with a complementary 3 year programme in clinical orthodontic skills which will be delivered and assessed by ASCDE.

How you will be assessed

The course will be taught by a combination of classroom based teaching in Cairo (lectures, seminars, tutorials and discussion groups) which will take place throughout the
year. It is planned to deliver intensive face-to-face teaching sessions each month throughout the year. Between these teaching sessions students will complete course work;
this self-directed learning will be reviewed and assessed at the following face-to-face sessions.
One-on-one supervision of the dissertation will be by a single tutor.

This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

The application deadline is 30th June 2017. Once we have received applications by the deadline the first selection process will begin. We reserve the right to receive further application after the deadline and make decisions on those applications in July/August subject to places being available.

You will have access to a range of facilities including: medical and dental libraries located at the Royal London and at Barts hospitals, as well as the Mile End library.

Postgraduate Dental students will have access to the Dental Clinical Skills Laboratory based in the Garrod building at the Whitechapel Site.
