Programme overview

Providing clinical care in remote locations has its own unique challenges and requires specialist knowledge and skills. This flexible part-time eLearning programme is aimed at health professionals working internationally in remote and offshore locations. All teaching is online, with students and faculty internationally based, and students can choose to study individual modules as CPD or towards a Certificate or Diploma award. The Diploma programme includes a residential component towards the end of the students studies.

Programme aims

The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote, and in some instances potentially hazardous locations, the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in this environment using an evidence based approach. To this end, students taking this programme will expect to:

1) Acquire and apply theoretical knowledge underpinning effective evidence based clinical care in remote environments

2) Explain and incorporate into clinical care the effects of specific physical environments on the health and well-being of remote workers

Programme Structure

The programme is designed to be completed in the time frames indicated below; studied part time, with exit points as follows:

Stage 1, Postgraduate Certificate in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 18 months, maximum of 3 years

Stage 2, Postgraduate Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 3 years, maximum of 5 years

For both Certificate and Diploma, Module C01 must be taken first, the remainder can be taken in any order depending on module availability.

Certificate

Certificate Level – equivalent to 60 credits
Students wishing to exit the programme at certificate level must complete 6 modules in total:

-Module 1: Health and Wellbeing of the Remote Worker
-Module 10: Evidence and Research in Remote Medicine
-Three additional modules from the compulsory list below
-One module from the optional list below

Students who initially opt to study at certificate level have the option to continue studying to Diploma level after successful completion of the 6 modules.

Diploma

Diploma Level – equivalent to 120 credits
Students wishing to exit the programme at Diploma level must complete 12 modules in total:

-Ten compulsory modules
-Two modules from the optional list below

There is a compulsory two-day student residential at the end of the taught component in Edinburgh which all students must attend to be awarded the Diploma. This is not a requirement for Certificate students.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

It is possible for students to study individual modules as standalone CPDs each worth 100 hours of study. These modules are open to everyone who has a relevant health professional qualification, but who may not yet have enough work experience in the field to meet the entry criteria for the full Certificate or Diploma. Students are taught by the ROM Tutors and study alongside our Diploma and Certificate students.

DDRC CPD

Those only wishing to study the Dive Medicine Module just to meet DDRC acceptance conditions and gain CPD for their work can join the programme four times a year. Applications can be made via DDRC: http://www.ddrc.org/physiciancourses

Entry Requirements

Normally: an undergraduate health related degree or relevant health related professional qualification and current work experience in the Remote Medical Care area. If you don't meet these criteria you are welcome to contact us to discuss your application further as all applicants are individually reviewed with regard to their previous qualifications and experience and you may be able to join the programme. Those applicants whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of both spoken and written English. This should be equivalent to at least the level of post-secondary (high) school. Fees

The payment plan options for all new students joining the programme will be to either pay the programme fees in full (this option protects from further inflationary increases) or to pay per module (module fees are subject to inflationary increases each year). CPD students pay on a per module basis.

The fees for 2017 academic year are as follows:
Diploma Pre-Paid - £6,499
Certificate Pre-Paid - £3,250
Per module 2017 - £544

New students must select their payment plan at the outset and may not subsequently switch between plans.

Accreditation

A work-based coach, normally a clinical specialist from the NHS may be appointed as a second reader and ‘coach’ to comment critically on the clinical accuracy and relevance of your work.

Support the professional learning of others through leadership in education, supervision and reflective practice.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

Do you see yourself moving into a more experienced, advanced or strategic social work role? If so, Goldsmiths can support you in developing your professionalism by enhancing your skills, expanding your knowledge and reflecting on values. They offer a whole range of modules designed to further your capabilities in all domains of the PCF, but they focus especially on practice education and professional leadership. In addition, many of the modules are designed to further your knowledge and skills outlined in the Knowledge and Skills Statement for Practice Supervisors of Social Workers in Child and Family Social Work.

Normally, practitioners take individual modules of this programme and apply through the Continuous Professional Development Framework. If you want to achieve the MA or exit with a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma, and you are supported by your employer to do so, then you should apply to this programme. The MA/PGDip/PGCert in Advanced Social Work: Practice Education is ideal for qualified social workers. If you are a professional from another discipline please go to the MA/PGCert in Practice Education, which is aimed at other staff working in social welfare roles. Both programmes will enable you to extend and develop your existing competence and prepare for leadership and research in practice education. All modules, except the dissertation, can be taken as standalone MA-level CPD modules.

This programme has been endorsed by TCSW as working to an agreed set of quality criteria and offers provision that meets the CPD learning needs of social workers.  

Modules & structure

Your first two modules will see you providing work-based learning and assessment for a recognised professional award, for example for social work students. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge in supporting and assessing learners. The modules will support you in meeting the requirements of the Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS). This allows you to become a practice educator for social work students on their first (PEPS stage 1) and last placement (PEPS stage 2). In your third and fourth modules, you’ll develop your practice education skills through designing, implementing and evaluating a practice learning intervention. If you successfully complete these four modules on one of the MA programmes you can leave at this stage with a Postgraduate Certificate in Practice Education.

In modules five to seven you’ll focus on developing the learning organisation. You’ll extend your skills and knowledge in developing professional leadership with individuals, teams and groups within and across organisations. The modules will focus on coaching, mentoring, supervision and reflective practice. If you are going to work with NQSW as an ASYE mentor and assessor, module five is designed for you. Professional leadership also involves developing the learning organisation through working not only with individuals but also with groups, whole organisations and in interagency practice. The last two modules specifically address these leadership skills and enhance your capabilities in working with teams and groups and in supporting workforce development through reflective practice and learning within and across organisations. If you successfully complete these modules on one of the MA programmes you can leave the programme at this stage with a Postgraduate Diploma.To gain your MA qualification, you’ll complete a dissertation on a topic related to practice education. You’ll develop your strategic leadership in the field through your research, which will normally take the form of an action research project. You may also choose a more conventional dissertation, through which you’ll play a leading role in how the recommendations arising from your literature review could be implemented. Throughout your dissertation, you’ll learn research methodologies, and receive individual supervision and mentoring to help you design your research or literature review.

We also offer CPD modules on interpersonal skills for direct work with adult service users and on the Care Act, including adult safeguarding.

The modules have an academic and professional component. They support you in learning from your work, your reading and your interaction with others and by developing practice, skills and values, always aiming to enhance the experience of students, service users and carers you are working with.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) (60 credits)

You will initially develop your specialist knowledge and clinical practice relating to midwifery, particularly in relation to leadership and management.

Recognising your key role in practice, these clinically-focused units of study will enable you to enhance practice and service delivery.

45 credits can be undertaken from a variety of optional course units to best suit your professional specialism.

15 credits will comprise one core unit on Developing Practice and Managing Change.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) (120 credits)

You will further explore and develop advanced clinical practice in midwifery by selecting further optional units from the portfolio of units available.

30 credits can be undertaken from a variety of optional course units to best suit your professional specialism.

30 credits comprising two compulsory course units - Research Design and Critical Appraisal and Evidence Synthesis - will also be taken.

Master of Science (MSc) (180 credits)

After successfully completing the 120 credits for the PGDip, you may be eligible to undertake a dissertation from a range of options:

  • research grant proposal;
  • full or adapted systematic review;
  • report-based dissertation.

Course unit details

You can study individual units as standalone short courses or build up units of study towards a PGCert or PGDip award, and undertake a dissertation to complete the MSc award. See the CPD units  page for more information.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) (60 credits)

You will initially develop your specialist knowledge and clinical practice relating to social work, particularly in relation to leadership and management.

Recognising your key role in practice, these clinically-focused units of study will enable you to enhance practice and service delivery.

45 credits can be undertaken from a variety of optional course units to best suit your professional specialism.

15 credits will comprise one core unit on Developing Practice and Managing Change.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) (120 credits)

You will further explore and develop advanced clinical practice in social work by selecting further optional units from the portfolio of units available.

30 credits can be undertaken from a variety of optional course units to best suit your professional specialism.

30 credits comprising two compulsory course units - Research Design and Critical Appraisal and Evidence Synthesis - will also be taken.

Master of Science (MSc) (180 credits)

After successfully completing the 120 credits for the PGDip, you may be eligible to undertake a dissertation from a range of options:

  • research grant proposal;
  • full or adapted systematic review;
  • report-based dissertation.

If you are a non-radiotherapy graduate who would like to become a registered therapeutic radiographer, this postgraduate course in radiotherapy and oncology will prepare you to become one. By graduating from this course, you are allowed to register for this role through the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

By qualifying in this area you are able to respond to the increasing demand for therapeutic radiographers in the health service. Medical, technological and professional advances in radiotherapy mean the role of the therapeutic radiographer is ever changing.

Your on-campus training is based at the £13 million purpose-built Robert Winston Building. Here you use the state-of-the-art virtual environment for radiotherapy training (VERT). It creates a life-size 3D replica of a clinical environment. We also have 20 networked eclipse planning computers and 10 image review licences with specialist staff on hand to teach you radiotherapy planning and image matching. We are one of the only universities outside of the USA that can offer these facilities.

You get real insights into all aspects of radiography with our professionally approved teaching programme. You learn from a lecturing team who are all qualified radiographers involved in research at a national level.

In addition to this expertise, we invite guest lecturers to teach that are leaders in their field. You also meet and hear from ex-patients who share their experiences of treatment.

To begin with, your studies focus on the theoretical knowledge you need for your clinical experience. We encourage you to question and analyse, not simply accept the theory wholesale. You also learn to look at the complete picture from the view of the patient, healthcare team and associated scientific principles.

You gradually learn to apply theory to practice and tailor treatment to each patient by accurately targeting high dose radiation beams and sparing surrounding normal tissues.

Your studies enable you to develop and adapt your clinical expertise through reflective practice. You learn to analyse and evaluate your experience as you gain and develop new skills and competencies and to look for areas that need changing.

The course is designed in response to recent government initiatives to modernise healthcare education, increase recruitment into the health service and improve cancer care services.

Course Content

The Clinical Pharmacy programme can be completed via the following flexible pathways to accumulate academic credits at Masters Level:
- CPD Plus+ – register for individual short courses of 10 credits. You can register on a number of occasions in any academic year. Completing 6 CPD Plus+ courses will provide the postgraduate Certificate award and 12 courses the Diploma award.

- CPD Plus+ Open Learn – provides opportunity to negotiate some or all of the content and learning outcomes to meet your specific needs (available as 10, 15 and 30-credit modules)

- Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 9 months and you’ll complete your choice of 6 of the optional modules from our CPD Plus+ portfolio.

- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 21 months and in the first year you will complete the 6 modules as described for the Certificate and an additional 6 modules of your choice in Year 2.

- Professional MSc – Building on the Diploma course students study a further three modules: Research Methods (15 credits), Advanced Practice Development (15 credits) and Independent Learning Project (30 credits)

Teaching & Assessment

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. The Programme is also supported by our network of experienced, practising hospital pharmacists who fulfil the roles of clinical co-ordinators and tutors. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact. You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used.

All of the modules contain Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice.

An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments , Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%. The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

Additional Costs

For all programmes you will need regular access to a computer, email and the internet. However apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for our postgraduate programmes.

So, in these austere times, can we really accept to carry hidden costs and lose value through unethical behaviour perpetrated against us? At the School of Management we have decided to take a stand and teach what most business schools still do not teach... defence against the commercial dark side.

Properly combating fraud and corruption is still an elusive goal. Time and again we see people and apparently well-managed organisations subjected to major embarrassment, financial penalties or even bankruptcy as the result of inappropriate actions and failings by 'trusted' individuals. This course will help you to learn how to address the challenge; how you can ensure that you actively defend yourself and your organisation against the very real threats we would rather not see?

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Demystify fraud and corruption (what it is, who does it and why, what it costs us).

Many candidates for leadership roles feel that they have the personal characteristics and skills necessary to be a great leader. What, then, can be done to address our negative experience of leaders and what can each of us do to ensure we perform leadership roles to the best of our ability? This course run by our School of Management aims to address these points.

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Explore how leadership theory and leadership studies have developed over the last century, describing various views on leadership styles, the styles themselves and how they might or should vary.
-Critique what we know about power, influence, motivation and the way in which leadership is constructed between leaders and followers.
