The MA Advanced Professional Practice is a highly accessible, flexible programme of study suitable for professional staff from a variety of backgrounds including Health, Education, Social Care, Social Work, Early Years, Criminal Justice and professions allied to Health (such as Occupational Therapists). The programme offers stand-alone modules used for CPD as well as the opportunity to gain a full MA.

The MA Advanced Professional Practice enables you to work towards Master’s level qualifications by combining campus –based modules with short courses, work- based learning and other Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.

The MA consists of three phases:

Phase 1: Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice.
Phase 2: Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Practice.
Phase 3: MA in Advanced Professional Practice.
The first phase of the MA leads to a Postgraduate Certificate which is normally completed in one year, January to December Upon completion you have the choice of proceeding to the Postgraduate Diploma phase or taking a break from study. The full MA will take between three to seven years to complete, depending in how you choose to organise your studies. Alternatively, the programme structure enables you to exit after each phase with a professional award, should you wish.

Indicative modules
The Programme Co-ordinator will work with you to design your individual pathway through this programme. At the Postgraduate Certificate phase many of the modules provide vehicles for you to import and evidence CPD activity that you may have undertaken in the workplace , or learning from short courses. Once you have applied to the programme you will be allocated a Professional Mentor who will advise and support you in combining taught study with work-based learning.

The MA consists of three phases:

This innovative modular Masters programme offers practitioners the opportunity to gain Higher Education credit alongside their work in a range of core and elective modules. Modules can be taken at the University of Chichester and ‘imported’ from other accredited ‘M’ level courses. The MA Advanced Professional Practice is a unique and responsive programme, which allows practitioners to combine taught modules with verification, and accreditation of learning from work based activities and in-house training.

The MA Advanced Professional Practice can be aligned with the outcomes of learning and career development outlined in the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF)

The following distinctive features ensure that the programme is responsive to practitioner and employer need:

Verification of learning from work-based activities and in-house training

A key feature of the MA Advanced Professional Practice is the opportunity to import work- based projects and in-house training, allowing a greater degree of flexibility and fit with other CPD activity. This is achieved through the use of ‘Shell Modules’, which require students to evidence their attendance of training opportunities, or the time devoted to work-based projects. This evidence constitutes the module ‘content’. The module assignments then assess the outcomes of the CPD activity: how the activity has enhanced the effectiveness of the practitioner or contributed to service development.
A flexible response to accreditation of learning

University of Chichester regulations differ from those of many universities in allowing students to import up to 50% of academic credit from modules and courses completed at other Higher Education Institutions. The advantage of this facility is that students could, for example, complete a module from University A, a course at University B and combine these with further modules, or other forms of CPD, to build credit towards the MA. This approach to CPD accreditation affords practitioners and employers an unprecedented level of choice and flexibility.
Aligning in-house CPD programmes with an M level framework

The flexibilities afforded by the MA Advanced Professional Practice enable employers to deliver CPD Programmes, which also allow staff to gain ‘M’ level credits. This can be achieved through the University approval of CPD programmes delivered by employers, or by use of the shell modules to import in-house learning into the MA, Postgraduate Diploma, or Post Graduate Certificates.
Aligning University modules with in-house CPD strategies

The MA incorporates a number of modules which can be commissioned by employers and the content adapted to specific CPD requirements. This enables employers to address niche CPD interests or to incorporate agency-specific content in the module delivery. A recent example was the commissioning by a local authority of an off-the-shelf module, the content of which was then focused on the specific needs of the organisation’s Occupational Therapists.
Bespoke pathways

It is a challenge to find CPD programmes which accurately reflect the often individualised requirements of individuals or employers. The flexibilities afforded by the MA Advanced Professional Practice enable participants to pursue a truly bespoke and individualised pathway. This is particularly attractive to individuals who have complex or composite roles (for example manager and practitioner) which may not be fully addressed in the more restricted content of traditional programmes.
Blended learning

Our blended learning approach has developed with emerging technologies for enhanced communication. Our experience and research in learning and teaching have highlighted the need for a personalised approach for some learners. We understand the high levels of motivation required for independent study and many of our learners need the support of tutors and fellow students to retain their engagement with study. We offer named tutors who support students and can, where necessary, signpost them to other services, as well as a combination of traditional and emerging methods of study to enhance students’ engagement and experience.

Modules & Structure

The first two modules support you in meeting the requirements of the Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS). This allows you to become a practice educator for social work students on their first (PEPS stage1) and last placement (PEPS stage 2).

The next two modules focus on planning, implementing and evaluating a learning intervention and help you to develop your skills as a Practice Development Educator.

If you are going to work with NQSW as an ASYE mentor and assessor, module five is designed for you.

In all these modules you will develop your capabilities in relation to teaching, mentoring, supporting and assessing of Social Work students, social care staff, qualified Social Workers and other allied professionals.

Professional leadership also involves developing the learning organisation through working not only with individuals but also with groups, whole organisations and in interagency practice.

The last two modules specifically address these leadership skills and enhance your capabilities in working with teams and groups and in supporting workforce development through reflective practice and learning within and across organisations.

If you want to further develop your leadership in social work education and research capabilities and evidence informed practice skills you can apply to the MA and conduct your own research.

We also offer CPD modules on interpersonal skills for direct work with adult service users and on the Care Act, including adult safeguarding.

The modules have an academic and professional component. They support you in learning from your work, your reading and your interaction with others and by developing practice, skills and values, always aiming to enhance the experience of students, service users and carers you are working with.

Other entry requirements

You should have obtained initial competence in teaching and assessing the practice of professional students and mentoring and supporting students or colleagues. You should be working or intending to take up employment (usually in a paid, but exceptionally in a voluntary capacity) in a setting that will enable you to demonstrate competence in practice education at the required level. If you already hold the Practice Teaching Award or another equivalent qualification, or have MA level credits, you can apply for accreditation of prior accredited learning.

What support can I expect?

Once you have started with the module you will receive a handbook for the CPD modules. This handbook lists all the relevant dates (see chapter on curriculum). In the handbook you can also find all the relevant information on your module(s), including module outlines, learning outcomes, assessment requirements, reading lists, additional support available to practice educators with a learning disability, etc. In addition, we offer an induction workshop, where you will be supported with your enrolment, receive information on the virtual learning environment (VLE) and be given an induction to the library. In relation to your assessment we are running portfolio preparation workshops for some modules and are also offering sessions on how to upload your portfolio. You are entitled to 1 hour individual tutorial time per 60 credits, or 30 minutes, if you are doing 30 credits. Tutorials can either be face to face, phone or via email.

Rethinking Child Development is an 8 session online CPD course designed to challenge practitioners to extend their understanding and knowledge of child development. It aims to support practitioners to reflect on established views and explore new directions and understanding in this important field.

As well as exploring existing and more contemporary views of child development, the course will also explore holistic development, resilience and well-being and development through play and brain development.

Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to receive a fully subsidised CPD course from Glyndwr University.

As we launch our programme of Childhood Studies online CPD courses, a unique opportunity has arisen to offer the first 20 credit, level 4 course, free of charge to practitioners in the children’s workforce.

Course Content

The course is divided in to two sets of 4 sessions with an assessment after each set. The sessions are as follows:

Understanding the Child and Childhood - In this session we examine how thinking about childhood and children in society influences thinking and practice regarding child development.

Dominant Theories of Child Development - In this session we examine how theory has influenced current thinking and practice regarding child development and why ‘Developmentalism’ has become the dominant view.

Alternative Theories of Child Development - In this session we start to examine the alternative theories and ways of thinking about child development so we can challenge practice and better understand the role of the child in their own development.

Next Steps in Child Development - The final session in this section asks ‘where next?’ Where is our understanding of child development going and how will this influence practice?

Understanding Holistic Development - In the second section of the course we start to look at key themes regarding child development. In the first session we examine what it means to view development holistically and how this fits with the dominant view of ‘Developmentalism’.

Understanding the Role of Resilience and Well-being - In the second session we examine the role that resilience and well-being play in children’s development as we acknowledge children as being active participants.

Understanding Development through Play - In the third session we examine the role of play in supporting children’s development.

Understanding Brain Development - In the final session we examine current knowledge regarding brain development and how this impacts understanding of child development and what this could mean in practice.

How Will I Study?

At Glyndwr University we use an interactive online learning environment called Moodle. You will have 24/7 access to Moodle for the duration of the course so you can study at a time convenient to you.

You will have support from an experienced tutor whilst studying online. They will work with you on Moodle and you can make contact through Moodle messaging, chat forums, e-mail and telephone.

You will study the content online through reading, watching videos, listening to podcasts and by using discussion forums to share your ideas and experiences with the tutor and other students.

To complete the course you would be expected to study for approximately 4 hours per week with some additional time for reading and completing assignments.

Overview

Course Aims

Keele’s Pg Clinical Pharmacy Programme aims to:
- Build on your existing knowledge of disease states, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics to enable you to apply this in a clinical setting

- Equip you to assess drug therapy for effectiveness, safety, compatibility, patient acceptability and cost, and use this information to make effective interventions and develop and document pharmaceutical care plans

- Encourage you to develop an understanding of the principles of pharmaceutical care and problem-solving approach to clinical practice

- Provide you with a wider view of health care and equip you with sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to develop and extend your professional role

- Increase your confidence in your ability to contribute to patient care as part of the multidisciplinary health care team

- Provide you with a structured learning programme that will help you apply your knowledge and skills in daily practice

- Encourage you to develop a reflective approach to your clinical pharmacy practice

- Encourage you to develop the self-discipline of private study and self-directed learning that will be continued beyond Keele’s Programme in your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as an independent learner

In addition, you will develop valuable practical skills including written and oral communication, and the ability to design a project, collect, analyse and interpret data.

Course Content

The Clinical Pharmacy programme can be completed via the following flexible pathways to accumulate academic credits at Masters Level:
- CPD Plus+ – register for individual short courses of 10 credits. You can register on a number of occasions in any academic year. Completing 6 CPD Plus+ courses will provide the postgraduate Certificate award and 12 courses the Diploma award.

- CPD Plus+ Open Learn – provides opportunity to negotiate some or all of the content and learning outcomes to meet your specific needs (available as 10, 15 and 30-credit modules)

- Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 9 months and you’ll complete your choice of 6 of the optional modules from our CPD Plus+ portfolio.

- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 21 months and in the first year you will complete the 6 modules as described for the Certificate and an additional 6 modules of your choice in Year 2.

- Professional MSc – Building on the Diploma course students study a further three modules: Research Methods (15 credits), Advanced Practice Development (15 credits) and Independent Learning Project (30 credits)

Teaching & Assessment

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. The Programme is also supported by our network of experienced, practising hospital pharmacists who fulfil the roles of clinical co-ordinators and tutors. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact. You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used.

All of the modules contain Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice.

An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments , Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%. The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

Additional Costs

For all programmes you will need regular access to a computer, email and the internet. However apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for our postgraduate programmes.

This course enables you to practice as a pipeline engineer. The oil and gas industry help to specify the curriculum so we meet their requirements in high-pressure offshore and onshore pipelines.

You will gain: an understanding of the key steps in a pipeline's lifecycle: design, construction, installation, asset management, maintenance and dismantling; experience from specialists in pipeline operation; the ability to develop a thesis through selection of appropriate experimental, computer simulation or data analysis procedures; skills in identifying, designing and applying laboratory tests to solve pipeline engineering problems; knowledge in applying appropriate mathematical models in the simulation of pipeline engineering problems.

Teaching consists of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and personal supervision covering a variety of topics in pipeline engineering. The degree is taught using a mix of academic staff from the School of Marine Science and Technology as well as visiting lecturers and experts from industry.

You will choose an individual dissertation project. This may be a critical review and/or computational or experimental project using our world leading testing facilities. You also benefit from participating in projects sponsored directly by industry partners whenever they are available.

Most organisations have their fair share of fraud and corruption, and it affects all of us. As we know, what comes out in the press is the sharp tip of the iceberg. So, in these austere times, can we really accept to carry hidden costs and lose value through unethical behaviour perpetrated against us? At the School of Management we have decided to take a stand and teach what most business schools still do not teach... defence against the commercial dark side.

Properly combating fraud and corruption is still an elusive goal. Time and again we see people and apparently well-managed organisations subjected to major embarrassment, financial penalties or even bankruptcy as the result of inappropriate actions and failings by 'trusted' individuals. This course will help you to learn how to address the challenge; how you can ensure that you actively defend yourself and your organisation against the very real threats we would rather not see?

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Demystify fraud and corruption (what it is, who does it and why, what it costs us).

Aspiring leaders often look to role models for guidance, but for many, due to the weak examples available to them in their workplace or wider society, leadership remains an illusory concept. Unfortunately all too often we are left to wonder where have all the good leaders gone?

Many candidates for leadership roles feel that they have the personal characteristics and skills necessary to be a great leader. What, then, can be done to address our negative experience of leaders and what can each of us do to ensure we perform leadership roles to the best of our ability? This course run by our School of Management aims to address these points.

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Explore how leadership theory and leadership studies have developed over the last century, describing various views on leadership styles, the styles themselves and how they might or should vary.
-Critique what we know about power, influence, motivation and the way in which leadership is constructed between leaders and followers.
-Demonstrate the importance of vision in the leadership process and how leadership differs at strategic (or senior) organisational levels when compared with team leadership at the coal face of an organisation.

The purpose of this module is to enable students to understand the hierarchy of risk reduction measures and the options for risk reduction in the project lifecycle. Students will be introduced to the concept of ALARP and how to demonstrate that risk has been reduced to ALARP levels.

Assessment is in the form of an essay combined with activities (e.g. exercises, discussions, etc.).
