The Master of Counselling at Monash provides a professional qualification and offers a combination of theory and professional experience, providing you with the knowledge and skills to begin a rewarding career as a counsellor.

The course is suited to people from a variety of professions, such as human resources, health, social welfare and education. It is taught by leading academics with extensive experience working as counsellors and psychologists.

The course draws on contemporary theories and approaches to counselling and psychotherapy and will develop your appreciation of the mental-health issues that arise across the lifespan.

You will examine the various forms of professional counselling, including online and distance counselling, child and adolescent counselling, and individual, couples and group counselling. You will also be introduced to the ethical and professional issues faced by counsellors. Creative approaches to counselling will be examined, including play therapy and art therapy. In addition, you will gain in-depth knowledge across a range of contemporary cognitive-behaviour therapies.

You will complete 300 hours of professional placement, where you have an opportunity to apply theory to practice under supervision in clinical settings. The placement includes 200 'contact' hours (e.g. face-to-face, telephone, group and online counselling) and 100 'non-contact' hours (e.g. observation, case notes, meetings, administration). You will also complete 50 hours of supervision (which are included in the non-contact hours) and participate in weekly online discussion groups and postings throughout the duration of the placement.

If you hold relevant qualifications from prior studies and/or relevant work experience, you may be eligible to receive up to one year of credit into this course, which reduces the duration.

Master of Counselling graduates work in a variety of fields, including careers counselling, education, child and family services, child-protection services, health policy, family counselling, health-services management and rehabilitation counselling.

This course is accredited in Australia by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Orientation to Counselling, Part B. Advanced foundations for counselling and Part C. Specialist counselling practice. All students complete Part C. Depending upon your prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part A and Part B.

PART A. Orientation to Counselling
These studies will provide an orientation to the field of counselling at advanced undergraduate level. They examine the major lifespan theories and counselling approaches and familiarise students with the professional side of counselling including the many different ways in which counselling is offered. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Advanced foundations for counselling
These studies will extend your foundational knowledge for the field of counselling. They focus on counselling practice around mental health and in working with young people.

PART C. Specialist counselling practice
These studies will advance your knowledge and skill development for counselling. They cover major approaches to counselling, provide training in counselling practice and address the ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession.

As part of this core study you will complete 300 hours of clinical placements, including a minimum of 200 hours of client contact.

Format

The diploma comprises three core units:

- Unit 1: Working through the therapeutic relationship and developing counselling skills: practicum and theory sessions
- Unit 2: Communication through images: the use of the creative arts in counselling and affective education

Unit 1

Three main areas will be explored:

- Counselling theory and psychology - including a detailed look at the main approaches to counselling children and adolescents, the theory of human development and motivation and the psychology of change.

- Working with the therapeutic relationship - where participants will explore the role of the relationship in therapeutic work and have an opportunity to develop relational qualities including the core processes. There will also be discussions of transference and counter-transference and the use of self.

- Counselling skills and their application - where participants will study and practise the skills of listening, reflecting, observation and attunement, questioning, summarising, communicating empathy and challenging, which will involve the use of a practicum (working on skills in the group).

The unit also covers the social and professional content of counselling, where the ethical and professional issues of working with children and in organisations will be explored, which involves an exploration of issues such as confidentiality and working with colleagues, other professionals and children’s networks.

Unit 2

This unit aims to work in an experiential way and to explore the following:

- the use of non-verbal methods in counselling and affective education (this is important because many participants will be working with students who are either young or unable to express themselves with ease verbally);
- the theory behind the use of play and arts media in counselling;
- the satisfactory expression of an experience through metaphor;
- exploring working with key emotional themes and feelings;
- the use of the creative arts in counselling and affective education in schools.

Practicum work will continue through the use of video with opportunity for peer review and tutor supervision

Unit 3

The final unit aims to provide an opportunity for participants to:

- develop an understanding and awareness of how they experience and behave in a group;
- increase their knowledge and understanding of the theory of group psychology and psychotherapy and the application of this to therapeutic group work with children.

It will be structured around four components:

- the theory of group and group processes;
- application in the workplace, which looks at ways of integrating knowledge and awareness of groups and group processes into the work setting;
- personal growth and awareness, in which activities will be used to engage participants in reflection on themselves and their communication;
- the personal development group, which offers participants the opportunity to develop self-awareness by sharing their thoughts and feelings with each other and the effect they have on each other.

This is an essential process for future counsellors as otherwise their own preconceptions, anxiety and distress may distort their attempts to help the client.

In addition participants are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of self-funded personal therapy during the course of the Postgraduate Diploma year.

Assessment

The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, smaller group seminars and individual supervisions.

Each term, written work is submitted and formative feedback is provided. Informally, feedback will also be provided through regular supervisions (three times a term). At the end of each term, supervisors are required to provide a report on student progress which can be viewed by the student through CGSRS.

Assessment

- Thesis: Up to 20,000 words
- Essay 1: 6,000-6,500 words.
- Essay 2: 6,000-6,500 words.

Students wishing to continue from the MPhil in Education to PhD are required to achieve:

This multidisciplinary course aims to promote an advanced level of knowledge and understanding underpinning practice in the area of Counselling with Children Young People and their families.

Course content

This exciting course supports students in developing skills and theoretical knowledge of counselling with children, young people and their families. It is designed for individuals with a significant interest in counselling work with children, who may be practitioners from health, social or voluntary services who work in some capacity with children and young people, or who may be graduates of psychology and other cognate disciplines, social and behavioural sciences, education, health, social care and related fields.

The course is taught by experienced counsellors and therapists with a varied background, supported by some practitioners from allied professions (e.g. psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatric nursing, law and psychiatry).

Students of Counselling with Children and Young People can graduate with either a Postgraduate Diploma or an MSc.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Conference

The CAHMS Conference at the University of Northampton is a three day conference, and you have the option of either volunteering for a couple of hours and attending for free, or pay (last year it was about £15 per day) to cover the cost of lunches and printed materials.

Methods of Learning

Lectures, workshops, one-to-one, private study, online activities, group work, role play.

Schedule

Formal teaching takes place and on one to two full days per week for full-time students and on one full day per week in the first year and one full day approximately every other week in the second year for part-time students.

In addition, there is a three day taught intensive session for all students three times per year (first year only). In addition to this, students will be expected to attend one-to-one tutorials at least twice per trimester.

Assessments

The assessment strategy is designed to include a broad range of assessment methods, in order to ensure that students have the maximum opportunity to demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes for the programme. These include: essays, case studies, self-reflective log books, critical reviews, video recorded role plays and oral presentations. There are no examinations.

The Research Methods and Dissertation module supports the students in completing a supervised but original and independently undertaken research and it is assessed through a 12,000 to 15,000 word dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

-The MSc promotes an advanced theoretical understanding of Counselling with Children and Young People, integrating opportunities to develop practical and professional counselling skills.
-The programme equips students with a working knowledge of child development, psychological difficulties in children and young people in their contexts and counselling based skills for working with them and their carers within an an eco-systemic perspective integrating Systemic Family Therapy, CBT, and Creative therapies.
-This is developed through roleplays, small group process and other skill oriented taught sessions. Supervised placement in a counselling context is mandatory to the enhancement of skills.
-In addition, opportunities for students are structured into the programme to engage in personal development, self-awareness, reflective practice and to benefit from the supervisory relationship. Our CAMH conference (see highlight video below) is an excellent example of extra opportunities available as part of the course.
-Our experienced course team includes specific expertise in CBT, systemic family therapy, Creative therapies, Play therapy and Gestalt approaches, who are able to teach students and integrated approach to counselling with children and young people.

Careers

As a professional master programme, the MSc CCYP leads to a counselling qualification and opens a range of employment possibilities up for its graduates (e.g. private practice, educational and healthcare institutions, community and youth work services, third sector organizations, residential facilities). Graduates may take the MSc as a stepping stone towards further postgraduate study (e.g. Clinical Doctorate).

For students with a first degree in psychology (which is Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) accredited) further postgraduate training opportunities will include doctoral training on British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited courses in Counselling Psychology. Graduates of the programme will be able to work as a counsellor in a range of settings such as healthcare and educational institutions, residential facilities and community and youth work agencies.

For students with a professional background (such as teaching, nursing and social work) the programme will strengthen your skills and competencies and allow you to develop a strong specialism in children’s mental health. You will have the skills to appropriately position yourself as a counsellor and will have a good critical and in-depth understanding of professional practices when working with children, young people, families, parents and carers.

Work Experience - A supervised placement practice of a minimum of 100 hours is compulsory.

On-course requirements

To count towards a professional body accreditation, such as UKCP or BACP, the course require students to undertake a supervised placement practice of a minimum of 100 hours and a minimum 40 hours of personal therapy with an approved and BACP or UKCP accredited counsellor or therapist. A student membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a professional indemnity insurance and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check are also mandatory. All participants are expected to attend regularly and to complete a related assignment to the satisfaction of the course tutor. The course takes an integrative approach, which means elements from different theories are brought together to make a coherent whole. There is an emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and the relational processes involved in using counselling skills with children and young people.

Consideration is be given to specific areas including:

- counselling in schools and other settings;
- safeguarding and child protection;
- working with diversity;
- practical and ethical issues;
- working with parents and adults around the child;
- students' own work settings.

There is a focus on working therapeutically with the arts and with play. This includes practical sessions making and working with art images, sand tray work, as well as exploring the value of therapeutic story work. The course is taught through an active learning approach that centres on experiential work. Overview

The MSc Integrative Psychotherapy, leading to professional registration with UKCP in Psychotherapy or Psychotherapeutic Counselling, is suitable if you are a graduate and wish to achieve professional registration in psychotherapy or psychotherapeutic counselling. UKCP operates separate registers for practitioners who work with young people and adults, and successful completion of this programme leads to entry onto either of these specialist registers. A 60 credit Graduate Certificate in Integrative Counselling Skills is also available to enable you to develop your clinical skills in psychotherapy, and provides a bridge to the MSc programme for applicants without prior clinical qualifications.

What does the course cover?

Programme content is based on the professional requirements for either child or adult practitioners, but both specialisms also share certain common components. To meet UKCP accreditation requirements, you will develop a portfolio to evidence your skills and learning throughout the programme. This portfolio will form the basis of your registration with UKCP, via Newman’s professional accrediting partner, the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy. In line with professional requirements governing training duration, students with no previous clinical experience could qualify as psychotherapeutic counsellors after 3 years of study and as psychotherapists after 4 years, subject to completion of all course components. Training components include clinical placements, supervision, personal therapy, and mental health placements.

Assessment

Modules will be assessed via a variety of methods including traditional essays, case presentations, personal reflections, journals, and psychotherapy session recordings. The programme as a whole will be assessed via portfolio, based on professionally specified learning outcomes. The final academic component will be a research dissertation.

• UKCP is the key accrediting body in psychotherapy in the UK. Both Child and Adult routes lead to professional registration. The Child programme is one of a small number nationally, and the only programme in the Midlands that leads to professional registration with UKCP in Child Psychotherapy and Counselling.
• The programme offers a unique combination of academic and professional qualifications. These include two ‘interim’ awards - Graduate Certificate in Integrative Counselling Studies (level 6) and a PG Cert in Integrative Psychotherapy Studies (level 7), as well as four academic awards leading to professional accreditation, namely: ◦ PG Dip in Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counselling (adult) (level 7) – leading to professional registration on the adult register as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

What you will study

- Module 1: Counselling Children and Young People: Contexts and Practice Settings (30 Credits)

This module positions counselling services and practice settings within the wider network of provision and encourages you to examine and understand the policies and aims of the settings in which you work as well as to work, in partnership with other professionals and with parents.

It encourages you to examine the ethical issues and dilemmas which face those working with this client group as well as the issues of diversity and equality within their settings. It addresses those important areas of safe, ethical practice and encourages you to find a balance between a children’s rights perspective and child protection.

The module incorporates a practice placement and invites you to use this practice learning to address all the necessary practice issues, including those of assessment and evaluation of service.

- Module 2: Working Therapeutically with Children and Young People (30 Credits)

This module has an explicit focus on the skills and knowledge necessary to create a framework within which to counsel children and young people. It provides a sound base in the theories of child development and attachment which affect the child and adolescent’s emotional and cognitive growth, and also examines the social and personal issues which are common to many young people seeking help. It explores the ways in which many mental health problems manifest themselves in young people and equips you with the necessary creative tools with which to address these issues and to connect with young people with diverse needs.

Students may choose to exit the course or continue to complete the
MA Counselling Children and Young People course by studying a research Dissertation.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

This course will enable you to become part of a new generation of professionals working within schools and other formal and informal youth settings.

On completion of the Masters, there may also be opportunities for you to progress into further study via a PhD route on application, both at the University of South Wales and other UK Universities.

Assessment methods

The diploma is assessed through a combination of essays and skills practice as well as through a supervisor’s report on practice based learning and a portfolio of reflective practice.

Genetic counsellors are health care professionals with specialized graduate training in the areas of medical genetics and counselling. Genetic counsellors usually work as members of a healthcare team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. Genetic counsellors work in a wide variety of settings, these include: general genetics, prenatal care and family planning, pediatrics, oncology, cardiology, neurology, laboratories, research, education, public health settings, and corporate environments. GENERAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Department of Medical Genetics, through Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) at the University of British Columbia, offers a unique two year graduate program leading to an MSc degree in Genetic Counselling. The program has full accreditation status by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Students, upon graduating, will be eligible to apply for “Active Candidate” status for both the ABGC and the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) certification exams.

Six students are accepted into the Program each year to begin their studies in September. Genetic counsellors, geneticists, other healthcare professionals and UBC faculty members instruct and supervise students during their course of study.

The program balances strong academic grounding, direct clinical experiences and independent research to prepare graduates for the dynamic field of genetic counselling.

As well as core modules in Social, Developmental, Biological and Cognitive Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics that will give you a BPS-recognised Psychology degree, you will take a series of specialist Child Development modules in years one, two and three that will give you a chance to study children’s thoughts, emotions and behaviour in great detail. You will be able to do a work placement in a child-centred setting, and you will complete an original research study under the supervision of an active developmental researcher. If you want to see how children play or how they interact with their carers or peers, you will have access to our purpose-built Child Observation Suite. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You’ll be taught by academics that produce first-class research, which has an impact not just in academia but in our working and everyday lives. Much of our psychological research was rated as ‘internationally excellent’ and ‘world-leading’ in the last research assessment exercise.

Year 1 is assessed by coursework and Multiple Choice Question exams; Year 2 through coursework, MCQ and essay exams; Year 3 through coursework or essay exams and the project. Percentage of coursework to exams is roughly 50/50.

OPPORTUNITIES

You can get involved in the research carried out by our staff, both as a participant and as a researcher, and not just through your classes and final year projects - there are paid research student internships and part-time research assistant positions available. You can also take part in conference talks, research publications and research grants - our current students regularly publish themselves, or become members of the editorial panel of ‘Diffusion’, UCLan’s own undergraduate research journal.

Some of our graduates pursue a career in psychology by undertaking postgraduate training to become professional psychologists, including our BPS-accredited Master’s programmes. However, UCLan graduates are valued more broadly, and others utilise the skills that our degree encourages to take graduate-level positions in a range of organisations, including the Police, Prison Service, NHS, social and community services, health authorities and in the pharmaceutical industry, and in education and training.

FURTHER INFORMATION

All our Psychology degrees share a common first year, with the opportunity to start specialising from Year 2. You can choose BSc routes in (i) Developmental Psychology, (ii) Forensic Psychology, (iii) Health Psychology, (iv) Neuropsychology, (v) Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling and (vi) Psychology and Criminology.

The Psychology syllabus is informed by the professional body, the British Psychological Society (BPS). All core modules are completed by Year 2, after which you can choose your specialism and, if you like, progress straight onto a Master's degree, which can provide stage 1 of your training towards becoming a professional psychologist.

In Year 1 you will attend lectures, seminars, workshops and labs. You will take part in Psychology practicals and develop your skills in statistical analysis and report-writing. Lectures are delivered to large groups, but other classes contain about thirty students. These small groups allow you to develop your understanding of psychology and to practise your communication skills. You should get to know your fellow group members, and learn to use your Academic Advisor as a source of academic advice.

In Year 2, you will study core areas of psychology in more depth, including Social and Developmental Psychology, Cognitive and Physiological Psychology, and Psychological Research Methods. You will continue to develop your skills in psychological research and report-writing but work in smaller groups, and take a role in designing your own studies.

In Year 3, you will complete a double module research project on a Developmental topic. This can be the most exciting part of your degree because it lets you investigate a subject in which you have a particular interest, supported by one-to-one discussions with your supervisor. The rest of Year 3 is made up of a mixture of specialist and general modules including two core Developmental Psychology and Educational Psychology modules.

Degree information

The programme draws together theory, research and therapeutic thinking from a range of perspectives, including clinical and cognitive psychology, systemic thinking, psychoanalysis and neuroscience. In a workshop setting, students develop competencies in engagement, assessment and evaluation, and practical skills necessary for therapeutic work with children and families. These are then put into practice during the clinical placement.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research portfolio which may include both a developmental and a clinical focus, such as the evaluation and understanding of clinical and therapeutic services for children and young people. This culminates in a dissertation made up of an 8,000-word journal paper, a poster and oral exam.

Teaching and learning
In year one students attend weekly lectures complemented by small group seminars. Modules focusing on clinical skills are classroom based. In year two, as well as taking further modules, students move into a 2-3 days per week placement in a child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) setting, supervised by an experienced clinician. Assessment is by a mixture of course work, examinations and the dissertation.

Careers

Since the MSc was established in 2011 graduates have gone on to work with children and families in various therapeutic settings, or to undertake further doctoral-level clinical training, such as clinical psychology, child psychotherapy, or counselling psychology. Some of our graduates also pursue research careers, including PhD study.

Employability
Completing this MSc will help you develop several core clinical competencies and provide direct supervised experience of work in a child and adolescent mental health service, placing you in a very strong position to proceed to a full clinical training, such as in clinical psychology or child psychotherapy.

Its key organising principle is that understanding children requires the study of how their relations with others - peers, older and younger children, parents, teachers and other adults - inform their practices, identities and world views.

Through an examination of ethnographic cases from the around the world (including the UK), participants will learn about the different ways in which childhood and youth are understood and conceptualised, along with the different educational forms and processes through which cultural knowledge is transmitted and acquired, and how culture impacts upon these processes.
