Taught completely online, our Cosmetic Medicine courses have been developed with the express purpose of promoting and enhancing the professional knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. The courses are designed to complement practice based Recognise Prior Learning (RPL) awards, which are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.

With Health Education England (HEE) adopting increasing regulatory requirements for aesthetic practice, individuals undertaking aesthetic procedures should have a formal postgraduate qualification. Therefore, these qualifications from our Cosmetic Medicine courses would be an important milestone in the healthcare practitioner's journey to be an aesthetic practitioner. Such qualifications are also regarded as integral by the individuals' regulatory authorities, such as the GDC, GMC and NMC.

The Postgraduate Diploma and MSc course is aimed at doctors, dentists and nurses with independent prescriber status. These roles are evolving with increasing demand amongst these specialists for a postgraduate qualification to help support their professional learning and clinical development.

Students may apply for the MSc in Cosmetic Medicine as a two year course, firstly by completing the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), followed by the MSc (60 credits).

Postgraduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine

The Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine course has been specifically designed to promote and enhance working professional’s knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. It is designed to complement separate practice based recognised prior learning (RPL) awards that are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.

The aims and aspired outcomes of the course upon completion are to:

  • Develop analytical and critical appraisal skills in both theory and research related to cosmetic medicine.
  • Demonstrate critical application of research to cosmetic medicine practice.
  • Professional decision making: incorporating evidence based rationale in a variety of diverse and complex situations related to cosmetic medicine.
  • To be able to apply advanced problem-solving skills in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the delivery and advancement of cosmetic medicine.
  • Demonstrate leadership of teams in multi-agency, multi-cultural and/or international contexts.
  • Demonstrate evaluation skills in the delivery of care to patients.

Applicants would typically be doctors, dentists or nurses with independent prescriber status.

These roles are evolving with increasing demand amongst these specialists for a postgraduate qualification to help support their professional learning and clinical development.

Course Structure

The online Cosmetic Medicine Diploma lasts one calendar year and is a part-time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks’ duration.

Assessment

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

Clinical case scenarios with case based discussion - 40%

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice.

Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales)

The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

  • Scientific writing
  • Levels of evidence
  • Harvard referencing
  • Reflective writing

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

Students are not required to attend the lectures however those who attend do benefit as they get a "jump start" to the course. Students who are not able to attend, should request a skype/telephone call to orientate them onto the course and are advised to review the lecture slides.

MSc in Cosmetic Medicine

The Cosmetic Medicine MSc has been specifically designed to promote and enhance working professional’s knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. It is designed to complement separate practice based recognised prior learning (RPL) awards that are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.

The Masters in Cosmetic Medicine provides a progression route for the Postgraduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine offered by the University.

The Cosmetic Medicine Masters of Science runs over 1 calendar year. Students undertake an initial 12 week online module to develop their skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies. Thereafter they are able to select a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional project.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Our UCLan healthcare professionals spend a significant part of their studies in the clinical setting, assessing patients in order to plan and deliver a range of safe and appropriate aesthetic medicine treatments. In a typical clinical session, students will inject botulinum toxins and dermal fillers, use laser and light based therapies, ‘recondition’ skin by chemical or physical rejuvenation. Advanced clinical sessions include interventions such as: thread lifts, carboxytherapy, platelet rich plasma, and skin resurfacing using laser and energy-based devices.

One element of the hands-on training that our UCLan students find critically important for their professional and personal development is the feedback and support provided by our clinical tutors. This evidence-based approach to aesthetic medicine builds the knowledge, confidence and competence we expect of our students.

Being an academic MSc programme, clinical knowledge and skills are developed and assessed throughout each year of study by a variety of formal examinations including; clinical OSCEs, case studies, oral presentations, reflective learning journals and portfolios.

An increasing number of healthcare professionals (HCPs) are now delivering aesthetic medicine interventions that treat a range of presenting conditions such as; photo damaged skin, vascular and pigmented lesions, lines and deep wrinkles, lax skin and facial volume loss.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility working on simulated similar systems. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though plenary lectures, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Our MSc Prosthodontics programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI). We offer MSc students 15 clinic placements in which we provide the patients at the UCLan Dental Clinic during their diploma programme.

Applicants will be invited to an Advice day held at Greenbank Building at UCLan, where prospective students will be given an opportunity to talk to the Course Leader and tour the specialist facilities including the UCLan Dental Clinic where students will carry out their 15 clinical placements throughout their course in which we provide the patients.

Developed in partnership with expert practitioners and the leading professional associations in aesthetics, the competency based programme has been designed to fully meet the standards for practice identified by Health Education England (2014) Education for non-surgical cosmetic procedures (required by 2018 in order to practise aesthetics).

A flexible blended learning approach is used to deliver the programme allowing you to fit it around your work and make it accessible to those geographically distant to the University. The programme is a mixture of e-learning, face to face and practice based learning. The programme provides a 3 stage linked award which you access incrementally. Our MSc Skin Ageing and Aesthetic Medicine course is specifically designed for qualified medical or dental practitioners who want to develop their knowledge of cosmetic medicine.

This is an intensive part-time course encompassing the science of skin ageing and aesthetics, the application of evidence-based practice, and the clinical assessment and management of patients presenting with aesthetic problems.

You will be encouraged to develop a translational, professional approach to learning throughout the course, which can be applied to your future learning.

In addition, supervision and training is provided by national and international leaders (PDF, 1.9MB) working in aesthetic research, regulation and clinical practice. Teaching and learning

This course has been designed using established educational theory and practices to enhance student experience and learning.

The University of Manchester virtual learning environment (Blackboard) guides participants through unit content, assessment submission and programme information.

Our units use blended teaching methods aligned with learning outcomes and assessment. The course contains e-learning case work, small group work, interactive forums, clinical debriefs, and practical sessions with volunteer models. You will be taught in small ratios (1:5) to maximise opportunities for clinical learning.

We hold two face-to-face 5-day residential sessions during the first 24 months of course, one in each of the two first years. Both of these will be scheduled in the first semester and dates should be circulated in September. Attendance at the residential sessions is compulsory for all students.

An initial Induction Day is held in Manchester at the start of Year 1 and 3 to familiarise participants with the online e-learning software and library resources. Attendance at the Induction Day is also compulsory for all students.

This course is led by an experienced team of dermatology experts (PDF, 1.9MB).

Coursework and assessment

You will be required to pass group and written assignments for each unit. Those with a highly practical element will also include assessments of procedural skills.

The master's element of the course will be assessed through a written dissertation (12,000 words).

This advanced course is designed for qualified Plastic Surgeons who want to develop their medical knowledge, clinical competence and patient skills within the Cosmetic and Aesthetic fields. Our accredited course will develop the clinical knowledge and skills you’ll need to practice safe, efficacious ethical surgery. By the time you graduate you’ll have a thorough grasp of the key surgical techniques and the ability to apply them appropriately, in line with clinical needs, ethical considerations and patients’ wishes. The course will also train you to critically evaluate emerging research and to incorporate it into your practice, and to lead clinical, technical and service developments.

Our course combines a significant practice component with research studies and a major dissertation. You’ll be assessed on the below elements by:
1) 2 vivas examining the case studies presented and reports you submit from the course’s practice component
2) your portfolio containing a further 30 case studies, which must cover the 14 compulsory procedures
3) your log book detailing the cases you’ve undertaken
4 ) An essay of 6,000 words exploring professional decision making
Your Major Project, which is a 15,000- word report or research paper including critical discussions and reflections on how your findings apply to practice.

The Plastic Surgeons under instruction will observe, assist, be assisted and then operate independently but under the supervision of an experienced University appointed preceptor. They’ll care for their own private patients some of whom will be referred from their preceptor Surgeon. The Preceptor Surgeons are also members of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons.

This course will equip you to develop your career in private practice as a specialist aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgeon. For six months during the course you’ll receive one-to-one supervision from a qualified consultant aesthetic plastic surgeon who is a registered member of UKAAPS. During this time you’ll observe them at work and carry out procedures under their expert supervision. This will provide the basis for much of your written work on the course. Our course is accredited by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

On successful completion of this programme, you will be awarded a Master of Surgery which entitles you to use MCh after your name. MCh is an abbreviation of Magister Chirurgiae, the Latin for Master of Surgery. Master of Surgery, rather than MCh, will appear on your certificate.

COURSE SUMMARY

Following completion of the Human Genome Project, the pharmaceutical industry is preparing for a revolution in cancer and inherited disorder therapies. This course is training a new generation of bioscientists to meet challenges at the interface between biology and chemistry, and to apply pharmaceutical and analytical knowledge directly to improve quality of life.

The course develops a broad knowledge and conceptual base in the field of drug design and discovery, with an emphasis on new developments and advances in drug identification, understanding drug pharmacology and novel therapeutics, and appreciating how these topics interact with bioscience businesses and enterprise.

This programme is designed to enable you to gain systematic knowledge and critical awareness of current problems and new insights regarding the analysis of biomolecules. There is particular reference to drug design and discovery, along with a comprehensive and critical understanding of applied techniques and their current application in research in the field of biomolecule analysis and drug design.

This course is aimed at students who wish to acquire the specialised skills needed to design drugs for the 21st century. It is ideal for anyone with primarily either a chemistry or biochemistry based undergraduate degree wishing to broaden their knowledge base. The part-time route is well suited to those who already work in industry as it is possible to carry out research projects within the place of work. Prospective students must be committed to developing their skills and knowledge for a career in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.

TEACHING

Teaching is through:

  • Lectures to provide thorough grounding in the techniques of biomolecule characterisation and drug design.
  • Practical sessions and workshops to demonstrate techniques and methods used in biomolecule characterisation and drug design, and provide a structured opportunity for you to practice techniques and methods in analytical biosciences and drug design.
  • Guided reading that will recommend texts, key articles and other materials in advance of, or following, lecture classes.  
  • The research project which will enable you to practice the application of appropriate, and selected, bioscientific techniques in an academic or industrial context, and demonstrate research methodologies and skills appropriate to and valuable with biomolecule characterisation and drug design. During your research project You will be supervised by expert staff who are actively engaged in international research programmes.

ASSESSMENT

There are eight taught 15 credit modules each of which have only one assessment (100%). Each exam is 2 hours.

EMPLOYABILITY

Although particularly relevant to those looking for a career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, this course will also equip you for a career in research, teaching and many other professions including cosmetic science, animal health, food science, medical laboratory research, patent law, scientific journalism and health and safety.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

Research projects may be carried out at other institutions (recently Universities in Bremen or France and the Paterson Institute, UK). We also invite visiting lecturers to share their expertise on the subject areas.

This course is ideally suited to dentists who already have an established dental practice and want to study an evidence-based approach to aesthetic treatment. Our programme director, Dr Subir Banerji, has helped many dental graduates, both nationally and internationally, to achieve their postgraduate goals, broadening their horizons and delivery of dental care.

  • You will explore all aspects of smile design, from non-invasive to full coverage techniques involving a range of aesthetic materials.

Intensive face-to-face training blocks

Delivered primarily online, the course also provides 19 days of intensive teaching and practical training in London. Our expert tutors will give you guidance on complex dental procedures at our specialist postgraduate teaching centre, LonDEC, situated at our Waterloo Campus, which offers state-of-the-art dental training facilities. These blocks are an invaluable way to consolidate learning and progress to the final year. 

Teaching

You will be taught mostly online through King's E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. This gives you the freedom to study without interrupting your work and personal life, and to put your skills directly into practice. Our students participate in online tutorials and discussion groups, interacting with expert tutors and their fellow students. Face-to-face lectures and hands-on training take place in blocks in the first two years. Students are required to undertake and build a reflective log of clinical work in their own general practice. 

Course format and assessment

60% per cent of each module will be assessed through exams and 40% through assignments, with the exception of the Case Reports modulewhich is assessed through a clinical log book and the Final Report module, which is a 10,000-word written assignment.

The MSc Clinical Dermatology is aimed at practitioners wanting to undertake further specialist training and develop career aspirations in dermatology and skin integrity. Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, hair, nails, and associated disorders. This postgraduate course offers a structured educational programme in dermatology but does not focus on cosmetic dermatology. It has an emphasis on clinical skills as well as the scientific, evidence base underpinning contemporary dermatology practice. At the end of the programme, students will feel confident treating and managing patients with a wide variety of skin conditions.

Course Content

Teaching focuses on the principles of managing skin conditions in patients of all ages. Topics covered include: the burden of skin disease, diagnostic techniques, skin histopathology, disorders of skin and mucous membranes, environmental and lifestyle factors, immunology and biology, cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, inflammatory skin conditions, microbiology of the skin, pigmented skin diseases, skin cancer, surgical intervention, psychological impact of skin disease, patient education and optimal service delivery.

Core skills for specialist practice will be developed including decision making and problem solving skills, leadership and communication skills, information retrieval, critical analysis and application of evidence based practice, audit and research methods and an ability to support and influence service improvement amongst others.

A practical skills theme runs throughout the programme. This is supported by significant clinical teaching and assessment. Overseas students are offered the opportunity to visit a local Dermatology Unit to observe clinical practice in a NHS setting and experience a series of specialist clinic observations.

The MSc Clinical Dermatology tailors knowledge, skills & assessment to the needs of NHS employers and the global healthcare sector to provide a highly relevant curriculum that facilitates the development of specialist practitioners and increases student’s employability.

The course is designed to provide clinicians with a better understanding of core clinical dermatology and skin integrity. Course structure and content

In the first 2 semesters the course focuses on 2 key areas of biotechnology: industrial fermentation (manufacturing processes, feedstock pretreatment, fermentation, and the biorefining of low cost feedstocks to high value products) and plant biotechnology (synthetic biology, gene editing, precision genome modification, transformation technologies, up and down gene regulation and silencing, and gene stacking). In addition you will receive practical training in state of the art molecular and analytical bioscience techniques and technologies, and learn of marine, food and health biotechnology, and how the sustainable use of bio-resources and bioscience can help meet the needs of the growing human population. All course modules are delivered by academics and professional practitioners at the forefront of activity in the field.

In the final semester you will work on your own research project with your dissertation supervisor. This could be a project of your own design and will focus on an aspect of biotechnology that you found particularly interesting; it may even be something that you want to develop as a business idea in the future. During your dissertation project you will use the knowledge and the skills that you gained during the first 2 semesters. Your dissertation project will give you an opportunity to become an expert in your topic and to develop research skills that will prepare you for your future career in biotechnology. Your tutor will mentor you in hypothesis driven experimental design, train you in analytical techniques e.g. gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, fermentation, product isolation, biomass processing, analysis of complex experimental data, and the formation of robust conclusions. There is great demand nationally and internationally for skilled graduates in Biotechnology, indeed the UK Biotechnology and Biological research Council (BBSRC) have made ‘Bioenergy and Biotechnology’ a strategic priority for science funding. The purpose of the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies (two years, 120 CFU) is to endow students with a sound scientific knowledge for modern pharmaceutical research and health biotechnologies.

The organization and the needs of the research in the pharmaceutical field have changed dramatically in recent years. Modern research in both academic and industrial setting is intensely devoted to the study and development of biopharmaceuticals, including the development of biologics and monoclonal antibodies of new conception. Currently, the pharmaceutical scientist requires a thorough education and expertise in molecular biology, genetics, recombinant DNA techniques and bioinformatics, with a solid background in chemistry, pharmacology and advanced pharmaceutical technology. The professionals working in pharmaceutical R&D and production must possess a sound interdisciplinary knowledge, including the specific technical and regulatory issues dedicated to the research, development and monitoring of innovative drugs and biosimilars.
