This exciting and innovative, part-time aesthetic medicine programme, presents the best available clinical evidence in non-surgical cosmetic interventions (NSCI), and combines it with clinical skills developed through experience and practice. This approach offers existing and aspiring aesthetic medicine practitioners an evidence-based programme of study in a growth specialism, that fully meets the qualification requirements recommended by Health Education England (Nov 2015).

One unique aspect of the UCLan aesthetic medicine programme is that not only do students learn about the latest research, products and technologies from leading clinicians, scientists and academics, but they also treat patients in a clinical facility, under the expert guidance and supervision of our clinical tutors. This unique evidence-based aesthetic medicine programme will prepare you to work safely and independently in an increasingly competitive sector, and one that will be more tightly regulated in the future.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The three-year, part-time programme is delivered via blending learning, with a combination of face-to-face tutor led sessions, clinical hands-on sessions and self-directed learning, using the UCLan virtual learning platform (Blackboard).

You will be expected to attend up to 20 study/assessment days per academic year. Face-to-face and clinical sessions will be split between the excellent teaching facilities at the UCLan Preston Campus, and a CQC registered cosmetic aesthetic clinic (Discover Laser) in Burnley, Lancashire.

An emphasis on small-group teaching and training, gives you maximum contact with tutors and clinicians, with the benefit of academic support and clinical supervision at all stages of the programme.

The clinical hands-on sessions undertaken in the first and second year of study, prepare you to become a highly effective aesthetic medicine practitioner, and will develop the critical thinking skills required to undertake the third year dissertation.

Our UCLan healthcare professionals spend a significant part of their studies in the clinical setting, assessing patients in order to plan and deliver a range of safe and appropriate aesthetic medicine treatments. In a typical clinical session, students will inject botulinum toxins and dermal fillers, use laser and light based therapies, ‘recondition’ skin by chemical or physical rejuvenation. Advanced clinical sessions include interventions such as: thread lifts, carboxytherapy, platelet rich plasma, and skin resurfacing using laser and energy-based devices.

One element of the hands-on training that our UCLan students find critically important for their professional and personal development is the feedback and support provided by our clinical tutors. This evidence-based approach to aesthetic medicine builds the knowledge, confidence and competence we expect of our students.

Being an academic MSc programme, clinical knowledge and skills are developed and assessed throughout each year of study by a variety of formal examinations including; clinical OSCEs, case studies, oral presentations, reflective learning journals and portfolios.

An increasing number of healthcare professionals (HCPs) are now delivering aesthetic medicine interventions that treat a range of presenting conditions such as; photo damaged skin, vascular and pigmented lesions, lines and deep wrinkles, lax skin and facial volume loss.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility working on simulated similar systems. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though plenary lectures, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 12 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.

Our MSc Prosthodontics programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI). This programme focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

We offer MSc students 15 clinic placements in which we provide the patients at the UCLan Dental Clinic during their diploma programme.

Applicants will be invited to an Advice day held at Greenbank Building at UCLan, where prospective students will be given an opportunity to talk to the Course Leader and tour the specialist facilities including the UCLan Dental Clinic where students will carry out their 15 clinical placements throughout their course in which we provide the patients.

Completion of this programme of study provides 60 allowable credits towards the FGDP (UK) Career Pathway (Clinical); 30 allowable credits towards the Career Pathway (Other).

This innovative new part time programme is available to existing and aspiring cosmetic practitioners who already hold professional registration as nurses, doctors or dentists. Developed in partnership with expert practitioners and the leading professional associations in aesthetics, the competency based programme has been designed to fully meet the standards for practice identified by Health Education England (2014) Education for non-surgical cosmetic procedures (required by 2018 in order to practise aesthetics).

A flexible blended learning approach is used to deliver the programme allowing you to fit it around your work and make it accessible to those geographically distant to the University. The programme is a mixture of e-learning, face to face and practice based learning. The practice based learning will assessed by expert aesthetic practitioners holding a recognised mentoring qualification.

The programme provides a 3 stage linked award which you access incrementally. The first stage (Post Grad Cert) focuses on the assessment of your proficiency to provide safe person-centred care to meet the HEE standards, enabling you to practice autonomously as an aesthetic practitioner offering botulinum toxin and non-permanent dermal fillers, demonstrating your “licence” to practice. Teaching and learning

The programme structure has been designed using established educational theory and practices to enhance student experience and learning.

The University of Manchester virtual learning environment (Blackboard) guides participants through module content, assessment submission and programme information.

Modules utilise blended teaching methods aligned with learning outcomes and assessment. The course contains e- learning case work, small group work, interactive forums, clinical debriefs, and practical sessions with volunteer models. Students are taught in small ratios (1:5) to maximise opportunities for clinical learning.

We hold two face-to-face 6-day residential sessions during the first 24 months of programme, one in each of the two first years. Both of these will be scheduled in the second semester and dates should be circulated in September. Attendance in at the residential sessions is compulsory for all students.

An initial Induction Day is held in Manchester at the start of the first academic year to familiarise participants with the on-line e-learning software and library resources. Attendance at the Induction Day is also compulsory for all students.

Coursework and assessment

You will be required to pass group and written assignments for each module. Those with a highly practical element will also include assessments of procedural skills.

This advanced course is designed for qualified Plastic Surgeons who want to develop their medical knowledge, clinical competence and patient skills within the Cosmetic and Aesthetic fields. Our accredited course will develop the clinical knowledge and skills you’ll need to practice safe, efficacious ethical surgery. By the time you graduate you’ll have a thorough grasp of the key surgical techniques and the ability to apply them appropriately, in line with clinical needs, ethical considerations and patients’ wishes. The course will also train you to critically evaluate emerging research and to incorporate it into your practice, and to lead clinical, technical and service developments.

Our course combines a significant practice component with research studies and a major dissertation. You’ll be assessed on the below elements by:
1) 2 vivas examining the case studies presented and reports you submit from the course’s practice component
2) your portfolio containing a further 30 case studies, which must cover the 14 compulsory procedures
3) your log book detailing the cases you’ve undertaken
4 ) An essay of 6,000 words exploring professional decision making
Your Major Project, which is a 15,000- word report or research paper including critical discussions and reflections on how your findings apply to practice.

The Plastic Surgeons under instruction will observe, assist, be assisted and then operate independently but under the supervision of an experienced University appointed preceptor. They’ll care for their own private patients some of whom will be referred from their preceptor Surgeon. The Preceptor Surgeons are also members of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons.

This course will equip you to develop your career in private practice as a specialist aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgeon. For six months during the course you’ll receive one-to-one supervision from a qualified consultant aesthetic plastic surgeon who is a registered member of UKAAPS. During this time you’ll observe them at work and carry out procedures under their expert supervision. This will provide the basis for much of your written work on the course. Our course is accredited by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

On successful completion of this programme, you will be awarded a Master of Surgery which entitles you to use MCh after your name. MCh is an abbreviation of Magister Chirurgiae, the Latin for Master of Surgery. Master of Surgery, rather than MCh, will appear on your certificate.

Following completion of the Human Genome Project, the pharmaceutical industry is preparing for a revolution in cancer and inherited disorder therapies. This course is training a new generation of bioscientists to meet challenges at the interface between biology and chemistry, and to apply pharmaceutical and analytical knowledge directly to improve quality of life.

The course develops a broad knowledge and conceptual base in the field of drug design and discovery, with an emphasis on new developments and advances in drug identification, understanding drug pharmacology and novel therapeutics, and appreciating how these topics interact with bioscience businesses and enterprise.

This programme is designed to enable you to gain systematic knowledge and critical awareness of current problems and new insights regarding the analysis of biomolecules. There is particular reference to drug design and discovery, along with a comprehensive and critical understanding of applied techniques and their current application in research in the field of biomolecule analysis and drug design.

This course is aimed at students who wish to acquire the specialised skills needed to design drugs for the 21st century. It is ideal for anyone with primarily either a chemistry or biochemistry based undergraduate degree wishing to broaden their knowledge base. The part-time route is well suited to those who already work in industry as it is possible to carry out research projects within the place of work. Prospective students must be committed to developing their skills and knowledge for a career in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.

TEACHING

Teaching is through:

  • Lectures to provide thorough grounding in the techniques of biomolecule characterisation and drug design.
  • Practical sessions and workshops to demonstrate techniques and methods used in biomolecule characterisation and drug design, and provide a structured opportunity for you to practice techniques and methods in analytical biosciences and drug design.
  • Guided reading that will recommend texts, key articles and other materials in advance of, or following, lecture classes.  
  • The research project which will enable you to practice the application of appropriate, and selected, bioscientific techniques in an academic or industrial context, and demonstrate research methodologies and skills appropriate to and valuable with biomolecule characterisation and drug design. During your research project You will be supervised by expert staff who are actively engaged in international research programmes.

ASSESSMENT

There are eight taught 15 credit modules each of which have only one assessment (100%). Each exam is 2 hours.

EMPLOYABILITY

Although particularly relevant to those looking for a career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, this course will also equip you for a career in research, teaching and many other professions including cosmetic science, animal health, food science, medical laboratory research, patent law, scientific journalism and health and safety.

This course is suited to dentists who have an established dental practice and are seeking to gain knowledge of an evidence-based approach to aesthetic treatment. The programme director, Dr. Subir Banerji, has helped many dental graduates, both nationally and internationally, to achieve their postgraduate goals, broadening their horizons and delivery of dental care.

A team of highly experienced administrative and support staff provide dedicated support to students. Combined with the use of a comprehensive online educational delivery system, this allows students to continually interact with staff and colleagues, to further enhance their learning experience. Partial completion or early exit may result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma.

- Intensive Face-to-Face Course

To supplement your online teaching you will also receive hands-on clinical training at our training centres in the UK. Designated tutors are present to offer expert guidance to students on complex dental procedures.

LonDEC, a King's College London Dental Institute postgraduate teaching centre, provides delegates with some of the finest hands-on dental teaching facilities available in the UK and Europe. The teaching sessions provide the supporting face-to-face tuition in clinical skills. Designated tutors are present to supply expert guidance to students on complex dental procedures.

- Course format and assessment

This master's programme is assessed through a combination of assignments, written examinations, clinical case presentations and a dissertation. In the first two years, most modules within the programme are assessed by a combination of 60 per cent written examination and 40 per cent written assignments.

For each module, you must complete a self-assessment exercise, a formative assignment and a final summative essay/assignment, to be entered into the end of year written examination. Exams can be taken in London or, for overseas students, at centres in the student's country of residence. If you fail an examination at the first sitting, you will be permitted one further attempt.

During years one and two, clinical work is also undertaken which is assessed by submission of clinical case presentations. In the final year, you will be allocated a supervisor and undertake a dissertation or project between January and September. The dissertation provides the mark for Year 3.

Career prospects

It is expected that graduates will continue in general practice offering a higher standard of clinical care with an increased confidence and ability. They might also use the programme to enter independent practice.

This research-led Master's course is designed to enable you to understand the biology behind, and applications of, a cutting edge area of the biosciences - regenerative medicine - using the skin as a main focus.

Regenerative medicine aims to treat human disease by producing replacement cells, tissues or organs. It involves a group of new technologies based on the use of stem cells. This area is currently at an early stage but is developing rapidly due to the recent ability to manipulate specialised adult stem cells to revert to a more embryonic-like stage which can produce all cell types.

The skin is a particularly useful model as it contains very active stem cells and is a relatively accessible source of human cells. The unique human regenerative capacity of the hair follicle is particularly interesting. Follicles shed their hairs during frequent growth cycles regenerating new replacements; these may resemble previous ones or differ in size and/or colour (e.g. beard hairs replacing tiny facial hairs).

Learning about stem cells and skin function in health and disease will also give you understanding of areas already important to pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

The MSc Clinical Dermatology has been developed to prepare clinicians for their role as health care professionals working with people with skin conditions. It provides inter-professional working opportunities for the study of key aspects of dermatology practice. There are a range of specialist modules covering key areas of dermatology practice including, management of skin lesions and skin cancers, and chronic skin conditions to enable clinicians to develop knowledge and skills relating to common dermatological conditions.

About the course

The programme has been developed to meet the needs of practitioners with a special interest in skin disease whilst benefiting from shared, inter-professional learning. This dermatology programme is unique in that it recruits both UK/EU and International doctors and allied health professionals to this specialist master’s degree and provides a range of taught postgraduate dermatology modules.

The MSc Clinical Dermatology is aimed at practitioners wanting to undertake further specialist training and develop career aspirations in dermatology and skin integrity. Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, hair, nails, and associated disorders. This postgraduate course offers a structured educational programme in dermatology but does not focus on cosmetic dermatology. Aesthetic practitioners with clinical experience in dermatology who want to learn more about skin disease are welcome.

This programme has an emphasis on developing practical competencies; good diagnostic skills, appropriate and timely management of common skin conditions and allows flexibility to study related specialist content to broaden student’s clinical expertise which is invaluable in today’s competitive workplace.

Course Details

The master’s course aims to:
-Develop methods of inquiry and skills required to research and advance dermatology practice using an in-depth current and relevant evidence base
-Provide knowledge and understanding to foster the further development of critical, contemporary, evidence based and patient centered practice in dermatology
-Develop a systematic advanced knowledge and understanding of the application of specialist dermatology to practice in the context of multi-professional and inter-professional working in the contemporary healthcare setting

It has an emphasis on clinical skills as well as the scientific, evidence base underpinning contemporary dermatology practice. At the end of the programme, students will feel confident treating and managing patients with a wide variety of skin conditions.

Course Content

Teaching focuses on the principles of managing skin conditions in patients of all ages. Topics covered include: the burden of skin disease, diagnostic techniques, skin histopathology, disorders of skin and mucous membranes, environmental and lifestyle factors, immunology and biology, cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, inflammatory skin conditions, microbiology of the skin, pigmented skin diseases, skin cancer, surgical intervention, psychological impact of skin disease, patient education and optimal service delivery.

Core skills for specialist practice will be developed including decision making and problem solving skills, leadership and communication skills, information retrieval, critical analysis and application of evidence based practice, audit and research methods and an ability to support and influence service improvement amongst others.

A practical skills theme runs throughout the programme. This is supported by significant clinical teaching and assessment. Overseas students are offered the opportunity to visit a local Dermatology Unit to observe clinical practice in a NHS setting and experience a series of specialist clinic observations.

The MSc Clinical Dermatology tailors knowledge, skills & assessment to the needs of NHS employers and the global healthcare sector to provide a highly relevant curriculum that facilitates the development of specialist practitioners and increases student’s employability.

The course is designed to provide clinicians with a better understanding of core clinical dermatology and skin integrity. Some students have pursued a career pathway as academic lecturers and specialist dermatology practitioners while some international graduates have gone on to work in private practice and specialist government positions in their own countries. On graduating, you will benefit from increased employability as clinical specialists and graduates are often promoted to senior leadership positions.

This programme offers excellent opportunities for continuing professional development for practicing health professionals. Home / EU clinicians can choose to study specific modules relevant to their professional practice as standalone modules.

International students should note that completion of this master’s programme does not lead to registration to practice in the UK. This programme may be sufficient for clinician’s to work as specialist practitioners in their country of origin, but local requirements should be checked prior to commencing the programme.

Teaching methods

All specialist teaching is done via face-to-face lectures and is supported by the universities online learning environment. You will experience a wide variety of teaching methods throughout the programme including: interactive and key-note lectures, seminars, workshops, individual and group based tutorials incorporating for example case studies, role play, problem based learning and discussion groups covering a broad range of topics.

Course structure and content

In the first 2 semesters the course focuses on 2 key areas of biotechnology: industrial fermentation (manufacturing processes, feedstock pretreatment, fermentation, and the biorefining of low cost feedstocks to high value products) and plant biotechnology (synthetic biology, gene editing, precision genome modification, transformation technologies, up and down gene regulation and silencing, and gene stacking). In addition you will receive practical training in state of the art molecular and analytical bioscience techniques and technologies, and learn of marine, food and health biotechnology, and how the sustainable use of bio-resources and bioscience can help meet the needs of the growing human population. All course modules are delivered by academics and professional practitioners at the forefront of activity in the field.

In the final semester you will work on your own research project with your dissertation supervisor. This could be a project of your own design and will focus on an aspect of biotechnology that you found particularly interesting; it may even be something that you want to develop as a business idea in the future. During your dissertation project you will use the knowledge and the skills that you gained during the first 2 semesters. Your dissertation project will give you an opportunity to become an expert in your topic and to develop research skills that will prepare you for your future career in biotechnology. Your tutor will mentor you in hypothesis driven experimental design, train you in analytical techniques e.g. gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, fermentation, product isolation, biomass processing, analysis of complex experimental data, and the formation of robust conclusions. You will also be guided in writing your dissertation.

Employability

There is great demand nationally and internationally for skilled graduates in Biotechnology, indeed the UK Biotechnology and Biological research Council (BBSRC) have made ‘Bioenergy and Biotechnology’ a strategic priority for science funding. The sector is expanding rapidly and provides excellent employment opportunities for biotechnology graduates. A recent report for the British research councils estimated that in the financial year 2013/14, British industrial biotechnology and bioenergy activities involved around 225 companies and generated £2.9billion of sales. The biotechnology industry makes a significant contribution to the United Kingdom’s net exports, equivalent to £1.5 billion and offsetting 4% of the country’s total trade deficit. In this year alone, biotechnology attracted £922 million in investment (4.6% of investment in the UK by the private sector).
