Taught completely online, our Cosmetic Medicine courses have been developed with the express purpose of promoting and enhancing the professional knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. The courses are designed to complement practice based Recognise Prior Learning (RPL) awards, which are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.
With Health Education England (HEE) adopting increasing regulatory requirements for aesthetic practice, individuals undertaking aesthetic procedures should have a formal postgraduate qualification. Therefore, these qualifications from our Cosmetic Medicine courses would be an important milestone in the healthcare practitioner's journey to be an aesthetic practitioner. Such qualifications are also regarded as integral by the individuals' regulatory authorities, such as the GDC, GMC and NMC.
The Postgraduate Diploma and MSc course is aimed at doctors, dentists and nurses with independent prescriber status. These roles are evolving with increasing demand amongst these specialists for a postgraduate qualification to help support their professional learning and clinical development.
Students may apply for the MSc in Cosmetic Medicine as a two year course, firstly by completing the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), followed by the MSc (60 credits).
The Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine course has been specifically designed to promote and enhance working professional’s knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. The online Cosmetic Medicine Diploma lasts one calendar year and is a part-time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks’ duration.

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.
Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice.

Our MSc Skin Ageing and Aesthetic Medicine course is specifically designed for qualified medical or dental practitioners who want to develop their knowledge of cosmetic medicine.
This is an intensive part-time course encompassing the science of skin ageing and aesthetics, the application of evidence-based practice, and the clinical assessment and management of patients presenting with aesthetic problems.
You will be encouraged to develop a translational, professional approach to learning throughout the course, which can be applied to your future learning.
In addition, supervision and training is provided by national and international leaders (PDF, 1.9MB) working in aesthetic research, regulation and clinical practice. The combination of research and clinical expertise in skin ageing and aesthetic medicine at The University of Manchester and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust will enable you to learn from an interdisciplinary faculty of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, maxillo-facial surgeons, dentists and psychologists, in addition to skin ageing and wound research basic scientists.
The theoretical component of this course is delivered online. You are also required to attend an induction day at the main University campus in September 2018 and two residential weeks in January 2019 and November 2019 (exact dates to be confirmed).

Staff on the course include members of the Centre for Dermatology , which is recognised as a global leader in basic science, translational and clinical research in skin health and disease and is 1st in the UK for dermatology research (RAND analysis).
This course has been designed using established educational theory and practices to enhance student experience and learning.
The University of Manchester virtual learning environment (Blackboard) guides participants through unit content, assessment submission and programme information.
Our units use blended teaching methods aligned with learning outcomes and assessment. The course contains e-learning case work, small group work, interactive forums, clinical debriefs, and practical sessions with volunteer models. You will be taught in small ratios (1:5) to maximise opportunities for clinical learning.
We hold two face-to-face 5-day residential sessions during the first 24 months of course, one in each of the two first years. Both of these will be scheduled in the first semester and dates should be circulated in September. Attendance at the residential sessions is compulsory for all students.
An initial Induction Day is held in Manchester at the start of Year 1 and 3 to familiarise participants with the online e-learning software and library resources. Attendance at the Induction Day is also compulsory for all students.
This course is led by an experienced team of dermatology experts (PDF, 1.9MB).
You will be required to pass group and written assignments for each unit. Those with a highly practical element will also include assessments of procedural skills.
The master's element of the course will be assessed through a written dissertation (12,000 words).
Our MSc consists of seven units over three years. Completing the first six units leads to a PGDip in Skin Ageing and Aesthetic Medicine, with a focus on the more clinical aspects of the field. The seventh unit offers students the opportunity to undertake an individual piece of research.

With the gap in training highlighted by the UK government review of cosmetic practice, it is likely all aesthetic practitioners in the UK will need to provide evidence of their credentials.
Our course does not provide a professional competence framework, but goes beyond this to offer integrated knowledge and the application of critical skills enveloped within high quality professional behaviours.
Graduates of this course will acquire a comprehensive knowledge base that can be applied to their future or current clinical practice.
Students gain expertise on East Asian contemporary history, politics and societies and learn social science research methods to become area specialists on East Asia. East Asian languages are studied as part of the degree to support students’ acquisition of knowledge and Master’s thesis research.
Students in the Programme have good opportunities for student exchange in East Asian universities as well as to receive East Asian study and research scholarships. The Programme provides expertise to enter international public, private and third sector professions. Students also become qualified to apply to PhD programmes and to pursue an academic career.
The Centre for East Asian Studies specializes in research on contemporary East Asian societies, with special focus on various manifestations of civil societies in China, North and South Korea and Japan. For China, academic staff conducts research, for example, on disaster management, social movements and protest, urban governance, and environmental issues. For South Korea, on popular culture and social movements, as well as on South Korean foreign aid. For North Korea, on social and economic transformation. For Japan, on social movements and civic society.
The research by the academic staff is directly reflected in the Master’s programme: students get up-to-date teaching on topical issues and societal and political developments in East Asian societies. Students also receive individual thesis supervision firmly anchored in the East Asia expertise of the teaching staff.
Students conduct independent research on their chosen topic and write a Master’s Thesis (40 ECTS). This trains students to apply social science methods, carry out research, analyse research data, present their findings orally and in writing, be engaged in argumentation and debate, and communicate their research findings in accordance with scientific standards.

Students in the Master’s Degree Programme in East Asian Studies have very good study exchange opportunities in the People’s Republic of China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, in the partner universities of the University of Turku.
It is common that students spend one or even two academic terms abroad during their second year in the Programme and also conduct field research for their Master’s thesis during that time.

Designed for doctors with at least one year of general medical experience, this MSc offers a structured education in dermatology and gives a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clinical and scientific dermatology. It gives priority to clinical instruction, but also emphasises the scientific content of dermatology.
The MSc in Clinical Dermatology is designed specifically for doctors with a special interest in dermatology after gaining at least one year of general medical experience.

It is particularly suitable for overseas medical graduates, but is also appropriate as an additional course to contribute to any dermatology specialist training programme. All course tutors are doctors, other health care professionals, and scientists, who collectively have a wealth of experience and skills in dermatology. To take advantage of this valuable resource, the course promotes collaborative small group work with an emphasis on a problem-based approach to the study of dermatology. Didactic methods such as the lecture format are also utilised on the programme. There is emphasis on clinical teaching in the form of demonstrations in clinics, on the Dermatology Day Care Treatment Centre, in clinical workshops and interactive clinical tutorials.

All modules within the programme make extensive use of Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Learning Central, on which you will find course materials, links to related materials and support resources. You will be allocated a nominated supervisor when undertaking your dissertation, who will schedule regular meetings to discuss progress, provide advice and guidance, and give written feedback on a draft.
There will be opportunities to reflect on your abilities and performance through scheduled meetings with your personal tutor.

The course focuses on training you to provide dental care where there is a clinical need to restore oral health and function, and also covers cosmetic and facial techniques. Intensive face-to-face training blocks
Delivered primarily online, the course also provides 19 days of intensive teaching and practical training in London. Our expert tutors will give you guidance on complex dental procedures at our specialist postgraduate teaching centre, LonDEC, situated at our Waterloo Campus, which offers state-of-the-art dental training facilities. These blocks are an invaluable way to consolidate learning and progress to the final year.
You will be taught mostly online through King's E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. This gives you the freedom to study without interrupting your work and personal life, and to put your skills directly into practice. Our students participate in online tutorials and discussion groups, interacting with expert tutors and their fellow students. Face-to-face lectures and hands-on training take place in blocks in the first two years. Students are required to undertake and build a reflective log of clinical work in their own general practice.
60% per cent of each module will be assessed through exams and 40% through assignments, with the exception of the Case Reports module, which is assessed through a clinical log book and the Final Report module, which is a 10,000-word written assignment.

The purpose of the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies (two years, 120 CFU) is to endow students with a sound scientific knowledge for modern pharmaceutical research and health biotechnologies.
The organization and the needs of the research in the pharmaceutical field have changed dramatically in recent years. Modern research in both academic and industrial setting is intensely devoted to the study and development of biopharmaceuticals, including the development of biologics and monoclonal antibodies of new conception. Currently, the pharmaceutical scientist requires a thorough education and expertise in molecular biology, genetics, recombinant DNA techniques and bioinformatics, with a solid background in chemistry, pharmacology and advanced pharmaceutical technology. The professionals working in pharmaceutical R&D and production must possess a sound interdisciplinary knowledge, including the specific technical and regulatory issues dedicated to the research, development and monitoring of innovative drugs and biosimilars.
The Master of Science focuses on transferring knowledge, endowing students with strong technical skills (hard skills) and interpersonal skills (soft skills), building at the same time those competencies needed to face the changing pharmaceutical marketplace. Graduates in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies will acquire a solid knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology and protein engineering, immunology, pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology, and in those disciplines required to design, analyze and formulate innovative drugs such as biologics and drugs employed in targeted therapies. The knowledge of the physico-chemical properties of molecules and macromolecules enable students to apply the analytical methods required for the identification, purification and characterization of biopharmaceuticals during production and quality control.

Deriving value from waste and promoting a transition to a circular economy is one of the greatest challenges of the current generation. We cannot keep taking, using and throwing away valuable materials.
Pyrolysis of waste plastics breaks down the polymers into a crude wax for potential use as a raw material, with a wide range of industrial applications. Reducing the odour and improving the colour of the crude wax is critical to the success of this novel supply chain. The project will look at what the contaminant components are, what suitable techniques might be used to remove them, and how to make the necessary quality improvements to enable the successful recycling of very large amounts of waste plastic into a useful raw material.
Applicants should have a degree in Chemistry (or related subject) at 2:1 or above. The successful applicant will gain skills in analytical chemistry (including NMR, mass spectrometry), purification technology (including chromatography) and preparative chemistry. An interest in analytical and synthetic chemistry coupled with enthusiasm for experimental work is essential.
