This highly specialised degree is designed to provide a practical understanding of a wide range of corporate finance services and corporate transactions. Both, corporate financial management and investment banking is at the core of the programme which is highly regarded in the City of London. 

Through hands-on sessions and extensive use of case-studies and financial analysis simulations, participants will be fascinated by the exciting world of venture capital, private equity, corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions. You will specialise in corporate investment and capital budgeting decisions, IPOs, payout policy, capital structure, enterprise valuation, financial analysis and risk management. Students will be resident and undertake full-time study in the UK. Under both, the 9 and 12-month programmes students take compulsory and/or elective modules in Part 2.

The 12 month option involves taking an elective 20 credit module between July and August, which would also mean a 20 credit reduction in the number of taught modules taken in the spring term.

Students who are on a financially-related masters course recognised by the CISI are eligible for exemptions and membership. 

ICMA Centre students who register and successfully complete two CISI Diploma in Capital Markets modules (Securities and Bonds & Fixed Interest Markets) are eligible for an exemption from the third module (Financial Markets).

NDRCTC CFC Certificate

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

The focus on corporate branding considers the following components:

Teaching

A particular feature of our Applied Corporate Brand Management course is the use of case studies to contextualise contemporary theory and practice and the importance attached to class presentations to demonstrate the ability to apply theory in practice.
This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

Modes of study

1-year, full-time starting in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

Placements take place over four months, from 1 September to 31 January the following year and previous placements involved roles such as project manager, marketing executive, brand researcher, internal communication officer and marketing officer amongst others.

Placement employers cover all student expenses and some provide a salary.

On completion of the placement, students proceed to find full-time employment in branding and advertising roles in the UK or abroad.

The purpose of the placement is to provide you with hands-on experience working with a brand consultant or a brand-related department of an organisation in the UK. It is an integral part of the course and you will receive support from the academic staff and the Professional Development Centre while on placement.

Educators are provided with the opportunity to further their qualifications through professional development. This coursework program aligns with the requirements and specifications of the Australian Quality Framework (AQF) and provides three major areas of expertise relevant to professional educators. The Master of Education does not lead to teacher registration.
The flexible 18 month Master of Education coursework program entails four core subjects, including an enquiry-based project, and provides the opportunity to specialise in up to two majors.

Leadership and Management Major

The Leadership and Management major is relevant to aspiring, expectant and existing leaders wanting to raise their effectiveness and improve their performance in leadership and management. You’ll investigate and apply principles and rules found in various areas of corporate law to novel problems, and real-world and hypothetical scenarios. You’ll also critically evaluate the legal rules, regulations, theories and underlying policies relating to Corporate Law.

Learning and teaching

Our compulsory and optional modules are taught through a range of smaller group seminars and lectures, depending on the individual module. All students meet weekly in the first semester for academic skills training. Support for the dissertation is provided via two group sessions, a number of one-to-one meetings and comment on draft work.

Independent study is integral to this programme – not just to prepare for classes, but to develop research and other critical skills.

Assessment

Assessment is by a variety of methods but primarily involves the writing of an essay of up to 4,500 words at the end of each module. We assess the dissertation through your submission of a written piece of work of up to 15,000 words.

Our graduates pursue careers in business, legal practice, the public service, or any career where success is built upon the ability to understand, analyse and respond to developments in international corporate law.

Graduates have gone on to work as lawyers and compliance officers as well as working in the education sector. A number of our students also remain with us to pursue a further research career as PhD students.

The economic and financial aspects of corporate governance relationships have long been of concern to those in the business and investment communities, and in recent years the social, political and moral aspects of these relationships have also become a major public concern. This programme aims to address both these sets of issues and to meet the needs of people wishing to engage critically with the policy aspects of corporate governance as well as those wishing to be involved professionally in the direction and regulation of companies and the management or trusteeship of pension funds and other investments.

The programme is available for full-time study over 1 year or part-time study over 2 years and combines coursework with independent research, leading to a dissertation. You can also choose a specialist pathway through the programme, depending on your interests and career objectives, selecting 1 from: corporate governance and ethics; environmental issues; finance and accounting; or public sector governance. These are run in collaboration with other departments at Birkbeck, giving you access to a wide range of option modules and a truly interdisciplinary approach to corporate governance and business ethics.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are academic researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. Corporate Governance & Finance is not a typical distance education program, but is designed to match the requirements of students who wish to remain employed while studying. The program is fully taught in English and marked by continuous interaction between students and lecturers. Structure

The program is designed to suit the requirements of students who wish to remain employed during their studies. In order to help learners fulfilling their professional, academic and private commitments, semesters are structured consistently. For this, online lectures are held during evening hours and mandatory classroom attendance in Innsbruck is limited to a minimum. Typically, three courses take place in the first half of a semester with each course lasting three weeks. Following these nine weeks there is one week in which students must attend four days of classroom lectures and exams in Innsbruck. The second half of a semester is structured the same way with nine weeks of online courses and one week in which four days of classroom lectures and exams close the semester. The fourth study semester is structured differently. There are only six weeks of online lectures followed by one week with four days of mandatory classroom lectures and exams. After this, students are supposed to write their Master thesis and sit the final exam.
