Course content

The course provides you with an essential foundation in communications theory, marketing strategy and public relations practice.

You’ll explore the history and theory of corporate communications, connecting communications to overall corporate strategy. Alongside this, you’ll study the latest thinking in important areas of marketing such as international marketing, marketing strategy and marketing research, as well as understanding how organisations manage their brands and identities, marketing communications and key priorities such as sustainability.

During the Public Relations in Practice module, you’ll work alongside classmates in interactive workshops that focus on the practical applications of some key PR tools and techniques. You’ll cover essential skills such as campaign planning, personal communication skills, influencing techniques and writing for PR.

In addition, you’ll choose from a selection of optional modules that allow you to focus on a topic that matches your interests and career plans.

In the final semester you will apply your skills and knowledge to either a research dissertation or a practical consultancy project. Our consultancy projects give you the opportunity to work with a live business situation, make links with industry and gain work experience that can be exceptionally rewarding.

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

Teaching

A particular feature of our Applied Corporate Brand Management course is the use of case studies to contextualise contemporary theory and practice and the importance attached to class presentations to demonstrate the ability to apply theory in practice.
This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

Modes of study

1-year, full-time starting in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

On completion of the placement, students proceed to find full-time employment in branding and advertising roles in the UK or abroad.

The purpose of the placement is to provide you with hands-on experience working with a brand consultant or a brand-related department of an organisation in the UK. It is an integral part of the course and you will receive support from the academic staff and the Professional Development Centre while on placement.

The MA in Journalism & Media Communication aims to bridge theory and practice in a dynamic interplay as the programme works to develop a wide ranging portfolio of skills. Staff teaching on the modules will be drawing synergies between various Media subjects. There will also be a focus on current media practice and the technologies of convergence exploring the impact of digital environments on the communications industries.

The course aims to develop professional and academic skills in the area of Journalism and Media Communications. Therefore, the programme will explore how to make communication more effective in professional settings by looking at magazine journalism and its associated business models, internal and external corporate communications, the impact of technology on the communications industries, and developing an understanding of ethical responsibilities and current legislation for media professionals. To offer more flexibility and to allow particularly international students to explore journalism and media production on a global scale, we also offer a choice module ‘International Journalism Trends’, which gives students the opportunity to develop a deeper insight into the theoretical and cultural framework of media and journalism.

During the course you will develop the theoretical knowledge as well as the practical writing and technical skills necessary for operating effectively in a professional media environment. Employability is a key characteristic of the programme, so you are given choice of taking an optional work placement instead of a dissertation as your final project.

In the media industry we are witnessing the advent of a new paradigm. It is one that thrives on inter-disciplinary collaboration. In this new world, social media, public relations and magazine stories rub shoulders, complement and indeed, often deliberately, inspire each other. This calls for a new breed of communications professional - the 'multi-skilled practitioner'. This new paradigm focuses on how best to create content and increasingly involves engaging audiences and media practitioners in dialogue. In this contemporary media environment social media, PR and magazine journalism are increasingly overlapping and this MA programme aims to address these synergies.

This programme will enable you to work in a variety of occupations from Marketing Communications and PR to magazines and web publications.

Teaching methods

The Media group is made up of academics who have professional experience of print, web design, journalism and PR, which lends the programme a currency and employability edge.

Teaching on this course takes mostly place in 3-4 workshops + additional online activities depending on the module.

Work Placement

This module will give students the opportunity to work in a professional environment and put into practice the knowledge and skills developed over the year. Students will be typically be expected to have spent a minimum of 20-25 days on an internship or on a work experience placement. After completing the work placement, students will write a 3.500 word report and give a short presentation reflecting on his or her experience.

Structure of the programme

The programme consist of 1 year full-time or 2 year part-time study.

Modules may change year by year. Examples of modules we offer are: International Journalism Trends, Writing for Magazines, Corporate Communications, PR and Advertising, Media Production, Critical and Theoretical Debates and Advanced Research Skills.

You will also have the opportunity to choose one of the following final projects: Researching and writing a 14,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice OR A 22 day work placement in a media-based environment together with an analytic report and presentation.

For all of the above, you will be supported by regular one-to-one supervision with an appropriate member of staff.

Whilst this programme has a strong professional orientation, you are also expected to engage in academic activities to extend your skills in critical thinking and problem solving; interpersonal and mediated communication; writing processes and styles as well as collaborative working practices and research methods in this area.

Course content

Throughout the year you’ll study core modules covering different aspects of advertising and marketing.

You will build your understanding of the ways in which brands communicate with their audiences with modules in marketing communications and PR and corporate communications. From there you’ll explore theories and practices of different types of advertising, and examine how organisations plan and develop their media strategies in a changing media landscape. In addition you’ll also gain an insight into important marketing functions of marketing which support brand communications.

Optional modules will give you the chance to shape the programme to suit your interests or career plans. You could focus on sales promotion, brand management and other fields such as social media, digital and interactive marketing.

The course culminates in a final project, which allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained while focusing on a single topic in-depth. Two options are available – you could complete either a standard research dissertation on a topic of your choice, or a consultancy project, allowing you to work with an external business on a real marketing problem.

Course content

What will you study on the MSc/PGDip/PGCert Corporate and Marketing Communications?
The course allows you to choose from a range of optional modules which build upon the content of the core modules and explore more specialised and niche aspects of communications. For example if you want to focus on marketing communications then modules on advertising, experiential marketing and events would be an appropriate route to take. If you have an interest in consumers and stakeholders within a communications context then modules on psychology, analytics and research would suit you. For a more strategic communications approach then modules on PR, crisis communications and cross-cultural communication would be the pathway to follow. You will also have the opportunity to complete a dissertation project in an area of marketing communications that you have a particular interest in and matches with your career specialism.

How will Corporate and Marketing Communications be taught?

The course features a number of different modes of learning that help enhance your understanding of the subject. These can range from traditional lectures and seminar sessions where you will engage with concepts and theories, explore key questions and carry out tasks such as devising and analysing marketing activity. You will also have group and individual tutorials, engage in self-directed learning and take part in a residential to enhance understanding of practice issues.

Dissertation

In addition to these modules, your dissertation gives you the chance to research an area of marketing communications that is of particular interest to you and of relevance to your career or company. You will have the choice of working on an academic-type dissertation or a work-based one, where you will work on a live communications project.

You will attend a number of dissertation workshops to provide you with the research training sufficient to produce a quality dissertation.

Format

This is a 'conversion' Masters course, and we assume no prior study of marketing communications. You'll learn though formal classes and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills.

You will also have access to a range of study materials online through our virtual learning environment. This includes online lectures, five-minute 'talking head' discussions and other syllabus-related material to support your learning.

Assessment

Assessment is through supervised mini-projects, presentations, time-constrained assignments and examinations.

Careers / Further study

Getting the right message across to the right people is fundamental to business success and those with expertise in marketing communications are always going to be in demand in roles such as advertising copywriter, PR manager, direct marketing executive, senior brand manager, account manager and marketing communications manager.

If you are already working in the sector, the course will help you take that vital step up the ladder or move into a more specialist role. Graduates of this course have gone on to work with employers such as Creative England, SCISYS and Telefónica UK. Many of our graduates also go on to further academic study by embarking on a PhD.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – the nature of the relationship between corporates, governments and communities, has increased significance as parties become aware of their potential impact on the world. This course will enable you to apply ways of thinking about CSR to local and global industries in order to positively impact society and organisations.

Incorporating the study of a diverse array of local to global factors, the course will help you to grasp the complexities of the contemporary issues and challenges facing a variety of sectors, and assess their role in societal development and environmental sustainability alongside governments and third sector organisations.

The course is applicable to many industries including telecoms, finance, commodities trading and the extractive industries. It offers two exit routes: specialising either in Energy or Sustainable Development.

What you will study

You’ll learn how to identify problems facing companies under the umbrella of social responsibility and draw upon a range of sources to generate solutions to these problems. You’ll apply conceptual frameworks in order to enhance understanding about the impacts of corporate policies and recognise and reconcile the competing demands of corporate policies and stakeholder interests. You’ll also forecast the positive and negative impact of policies and actions in a manner that reduces corporate risk, and demonstrate the value of CSR in order to better inform decision-making.

Those undertaking the Energy route will examine its relationship to global issues, national security and conflict management. You’ll also study the impact of energy on health from the perspective of those both working inside the energy sector and those outside it who are affected by its operations.

Those undertaking the Sustainable Development route will examine the impact of globalisation on communities, how to manage community development projects and the development leadership skills.

Regardless of your route you will study research design and methodology in preparation for the dissertation. This will focus on understanding the skills and techniques most suitable for use in the workplace and you will be encouraged to undertake a work-based dissertation where appropriate.

Teaching and assessment

You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, online discussions, webinars and self-directed study. Assessment methods include written coursework; essays, case studies and reports, and contribution-based assessment of online participation, and a research project.

The flexible nature of the course means that you will be able to pursue issues relating to CSR that are relevant and appropriate to your interests, experience and future career ambitions. Examples of such student projects include: 

  • Assessing the potential for CSR to help with peace-building amongst communities in Uganda
  • Analysing the impact of Local Content policies on CSR carried out by oil and gas companies

Your choice to study this programme will enable you to develop internship experience embedded in the MSc Marketing Communications , achieve a thorough education in Marketing Communications, be exposed to practitioners in the field of marketing communications through guest lectures and workshops and be prepared for either client or agency side of marketing communications.

The MSC Marketing Communications (with Internship) offers students the opportunity to work in industry for up to 5 months full time or longer part time. The programme offers the opportunity for students to reflect upon their learned skill set to enable further development of their professional career development.

Collaboration with client companies and agencies will guide the programme structure and content. Direct practitioner involvement in lectures and presentations offering cutting-edge topics and analysis.

Teaching and learning

The course offers a highly qualified teaching team of strong, research-active marketing communications academics who have published widely in books, journals and reviews. The team has broad industry experience in marketing communications as consultants, senior managers and agency directors.

Student engagement with industry-led research, practitioner shadowing and career opportunities feature as does access to the growing LSBU Marketing alumni network that actively participates in career and marketing events and regularly provides job opportunities.

Student on this course have the added advantage of having access to the substantial international marketing communications and consumer behaviour research undertaken by the Ehrenberg Centre for Research in Marketing, based at London South Bank University. Members of the Centre, as well as visiting researchers from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute in Adelaide will continue to disseminate new findings to students.

Careers

Marketing executives help develop marketing campaigns to promote a product, service or idea. The work can be exceptionally varied – from sourcing and placing adverts, to producing marketing materials such as leaflets and e-newsletters, to organising events.

Excellent writing and confident presentation skills are essential to work in marketing. Good people skills are also a must as networking is particularly important. So is having a creative and adaptive mind.

A traditional career path leads from marketing executive to senior marketing executive, then to marketing manager, and finally to marketing director. However the marketing industry is very broad, with many companies in all different sectors requiring varying degrees of marketing expertise, so options for progression vary considerably.

Successful graduates having gained valuable work experience will be equipped to work in a variety of organisations including multinational and global companies, public sector organisations, charities and start-ups. Many of our alumni work for advertising, brand, and market research agencies. Equally our graduates are successful in client-based companies such as manufacturers and banks.
