Structure

PgCert:

The Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) consists of three Core modules (3 x 20 credits):

• Research Skills and Environment
• Innovation in the Clinical Sciences
• Clinical Research/Trials Management

Students who have obtained a minimum of 60 credits at Level 7, only where these include the award of credit for each of the core modules, shall be eligible EITHER to receive the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Research and Innovation OR to continue their studies towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Research and Innovation. 

PgDip:

The Postgraduate Diploma consists of six modules - the three Core modules (3 x 20 credits) from the PgCert plus a fourth Core module (20 credits) and a further 40 credits made up of Application and Specialisation option modules.

Entry to the dissertation stage of the MSc in Medical Research and Innovation is dependent upon successful completion of the Cardiff University Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Research and Innovation (successful completion of 120 credits including credit for the all required/core modules) within the previous three years.  It is not possible to register at the outset for the MSc.

MSc:

The full MSc (Certificate, Diploma and dissertation stages) are completed part-time over three academic years. The MSc consists of 180 credits at level 7 (Masters level), of which 120 are contained in six ‘taught’ modules, and the remaining 60 credits are contained in the research dissertation project.

• Same modules as PgDip PLUS Dissertation: Medical Research and Innovation.

The dissertation, which shall normally be of not more than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, shall embody the results of his/her period of project work. The subject of each student’s dissertation shall be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

The dissertation shall be assigned 60 credits and, in combination with the taught stage(s), shall be weighted 50% for the purpose of calculating the final mark.

Teaching

All taught modules will be delivered online.  The programme is designed so that the learning outcomes are achievable through the combination of online learning and your application of the knowledge and skills gained within your current workplace – normally a laboratory, industrial or clinical/healthcare research setting.

Your studies will be supported by online learning materials, online tutor groups and discussions, formative assessments and feedback. All students will be assigned a personal tutor, who will support their academic development.

Flexible study

Teaching and learning

Assessment

Each elective is assessed by two pieces of coursework, the core modules are assessed by one piece of coursework and an examination. Each module comprises:
-Part I: Prior reading before the module where appropriate.
-Part II: Attendance at City (or other locations) for the module over three days.
-Part III: Examinations are held on the third day of the core modules.
-Part IV: Coursework is due within six weeks from the last day of the module.

Modules

We explore air transport management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. There is a high degree of flexibility in terms of sequence and time frame to suit students working in airlines, air traffic control, air forces and other organisations.

Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career. Students who choose note to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme with the five years can receive a Postgraduate Certificate pending Programme Director approval.

We cover the full spectrum of a Master of Science education, adding Management modules for the future career in aviation. The dissertation at the end of the MSc programme gives each student the opportunity to demonstrate the new research and project management qualifications achieved through the programme.

The programme is based on the successful completion of the Induction Workshop which acts as an entry pathway to the MSc. The MSc consists of three core modules and 5 electives plus the project/dissertation. Each module is taught over a three day period across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt.

Our two-year part-time MBA programme has been designed to fit around work commitments, with modules delivered in weekday blocks of three days.

• Part one:

The structure of the degree consists of 12 x 10 credit modules in part one. This will consist of 10 core modules and a choice of two electives from three in any one academic session.

• Part two:

Part two will consist of a 60 credit dissertation which describes an individual piece of research work conducted within your own organisation or industry.

Teaching

Our teaching is heavily informed by research and combines academic rigour with practical relevance. Our internationally leading faculty consists of academics who are at the forefront of knowledge within their field. They bring the lessons learnt from their most recent research into the classroom, giving you access to up to date real life examples and scenarios and critical business thinking.

Your teaching and learning resources will be provided and we will be responsive to your needs and views. For your part, you will need to put in the necessary amount of work both during and outside formal teaching sessions, and to make good use of the facilities provided.

The Executive MBA is taught in thirteen blocks of three days which typically run from 9am to 5pm. Once a module is completed you will have approximately four weeks to complete an assignment. A great deal of learning happens within the cohort itself as you learn about other sectors, and how to bring about organisational change, together.

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including elective module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate.

The Executive MBA Programme Director is also on hand to provide advice and guidance and to help with any issues you may encounter whilst undertaking the course.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work and generic written feedback.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

All modules are assessed by a written assignment of 3,000 words given to you at the end of each module. You will have around four weeks to complete each assignment.

You are also required to submit a 20,000 word dissertation.

The Nanoscale Engineering master is a two-year program corresponding to 120 ECTS credits. Students receive a universal and profound training in physics, materials science and electronics at the nanoscale, but also in nanobiotechnology.

Elective courses can be followed by the students in their desired area of specialization and/or to broaden their horizons. The entire curriculum is taught in English.

A key educational concept of the program is that each student is immersed in a high-quality research environment for at least half of the time in the curriculum. Throughout the academic year, lab practicals and projects are carried out in research institutions that participate in the program, and thesis projects are undertaken in research laboratories or in nanotechnology companies.

In addition to the scientific and technological aspects, ethical issues and the societal impact of nanotechnology, as well as business considerations, are addressed in specialized seminars and courses.

Structure of the Curriculum

First Year (60 ECTS)

The major part of semester 1 is dedicated to lectures: The students follow 7 courses from the core modules and 2 elective modules. Laboratory practicals and mini-projects ensure a smooth transition into semester 2 with its four-month internship in a research group. This internship is prepared in semester 1 already with a dedicated literature survey. Seminars of speakers from both academia and industry complement the educational program throughout the entire first year.

Second Year (60 ECTS)

Semester 3 is again dedicated to lectures, featuring 5 slots for core modules and 3 for electives, as well as some ancillary courses. The entirety of semester 4 is taken up by the six-month Master thesis project, which can be conducted in a research laboratory or in a company, in France or abroad. As in the first year, seminars of speakers from both academia and industry complement the educational program.

These courses impart the fundamental knowledge in the nanotechnology field applied to physics, electronics, optics, materials science and biotechnology. Students are required to follow at least twelve core module courses during the two-year program.

Experimental Modules

Students conduct lab practicals that are integrated into the various courses, during which they familiarize themselves hands-on with all standard techniques for fabrication and characterization of nanostructures. They furthermore have the opportunity to work more independently on individual or group projects.

Ancillary Courses and Seminars

This module deals with complementary know-how, relevant both for academia and in an industrial environment. Students follow a course on intellectual-property issues. Ethical aspects and the societal impact of nanotechnology are covered in specialized seminars, which also allow for networking with national and international nanotechnology companies and research laboratories. Communication skills are likewise developed through written and oral presentations of all experimental work that is carried out during the Master program.

Internship

In the second semester, students conduct two-month internships in two of the research laboratories participating in the program. The students choose their projects and come into contact with their host laboratories earlier in the academic year already, by spending some time in these laboratories to carry out an extensive literature survey and to prepare their research projects under the guidance of their supervisors.

Master Thesis Project

The final six-month period of the program is devoted to the master project, which can be carried out either in an academic research laboratory or in an industrial environment. Students have the option to conduct their thesis project anywhere in France or abroad.

Course details

To achieve a postgraduate certificate (PgCert), you will need to earn 60 credits, made up of two core modules: PGCAP701 Introduction to Teaching and Learning (20 credits) and MCH513 Teaching for Practice (40 credits). Please note you will need to complete module PGCAP701 before commencing MCH513.

To achieve a postgraduate diploma (PgDip), you will need to earn 120 credits, including the 60 credits achieved in Year 1. In your second year you will complete the core modules APP702 Advancing Research Knowledge in Practice 1 (20 credits) and APP703 Advancing Research Knowledge in Practice 2 (20 credits). The remaining 20 credits can be achieved from one of three optional modules: PGCAP702 Negotiated Study Module; PGCAP705 Developing Professional Practice; or MENT703 AP(E)L Mentorship via Distance Learning Route.

For a full Master of Science (MSc), you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from a research project in a related area of study.

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll prepare to make a contribution to education in practice and take a lead role in the development of educational practice within your practice setting, enabling you to apply contemporary issues in practice.

Course structure

The course is flexible so you can choose to study via a combination of evening classes and weekly blocks, depending on your specific needs. Part-time study allows you to apply the tools, theories and techniques learned during the course to your workplace, bringing an immediate benefit to your organisation.

It is possible to complete the course in two years, but most students spread the workload over three years. Should your circumstances change, you may suspend your studies and restart at a later date. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

You can start your part-time MBA in January or September, sharing core modules with managers from all our MBA specialisms. Once you have completed your first core modules you can choose to specialise in Leadership, Knowledge and Innovation Management or Public Service Management.

Flexible study

Our part-time MBA typically takes one day per week over two to three years, or on a block basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

The programme culminates in a 15,000-word Business Project. International study week

The Executive MBA is shaped by today's connected business world. Through our optional international modules we take this unique global dimension further, allowing you to immerse yourself in another country's business and culture. Locations may vary from year to year but in the past year have included San Francisco and China.

If you choose to participate in one of these optional modules, you will be expected to pay for travel to and from the destination, accommodation, some meals and incidental expenses.

Learning and Teaching

The Durham/EBS MBA Programme is normally delivered through a mixture of methods including lectures, seminars, case studies, individual and group presentations. Some sessions could be delivered by guest speakers who are practitioners in the field.

Students study 7 core modules, and select 5 elective modules which enables them to undertake more in-depth study of particular topics. This is followed by a 15,000 word dissertation or Business Project to allow students to carry out independent research and develop their skills in analysis and scholarly expression, using an appropriate theoretical framework. They are supported in writing their dissertation through the study of research methods, and attending individual meetings with an allocated supervisor, who monitors their progress and provides advice. The Business Project allows an opportunity to put new skills into practice in the real world, working on a live project with a regional, national or international company.

In addition, students have opportunities such as an International Study Week at an overseas location and a Boardroom Simulation Activity.

Academic Support:
Our MBA Careers Development Programme incorporates skills development, career management and the Durham Speaker Series and runs throughout the academic year. Students have the opportunity of individual meetings with a Career Consultant throughout the year and during induction they attend a Personal and Team Development residential activity and additional workshops, normally held over three days. Over the three terms students can attend various workshops to enhance their interpersonal skills and career development.

Learning Resource:
Outside of timetabled contact hours, students are expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study in preparation for teaching sessions, assignments and other forms of assessment including exams, and general background reading to broaden their subject knowledge. The Programme Director is able to provide students with general advice on academic matters. Teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Learning and Teaching

This is a 12-month full time degree course that starts in September with an intensive core module on engineering fundamentals and finishes at the end of August the following year, when students submit a report and have an oral examination on their chosen research project. The programme consists of four core modules to provide a solid foundation in a broad range of New and Renewable Energy technologies and three optional modules that allow students to choose study programmes which are most suited to their interests. The modules include lecture courses, a group design project and an individual research and development project.

The course starts in September the first of the core modules (Renewable Energy Fundamentals), which prepares students from different backgrounds to take full advantage of all aspects of the courses. This module consists of an intensive study programme which typically combines over 30 hours of lectures with 12 hours of tutorials and labs. Topics studied include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, power system plant, electrical circuits and power electronics and converters. The module also introduces students to best practice research techniques.

The second core module (Renewable Energy & the Environment) typically involves 19 hours of lectures and tutorials. Assessment is through a combination of examination and a coursework.

The third core module is a group design project focused on a realistic application of renewable energy. Students gain experience of teamwork and project management, as well as the technical aspects of engineering design.

A major individual research and development project completes the core modules. This provides an open-ended challenge to each individual student, in collaboration with a staff supervisor. Regular meetings are held with the supervisor to discuss project progress and planning issues. A mid-term assessment is carried out to ensure project is on track. At the end of the project students are required to submit a final report on their work, in the style of a research paper. They are also required to prepare and to present a poster to allow an assessment to be made of their understanding and ability to present their work, plus an oral examination is held to allow detailed questions to be put to the student regarding the technical aspects of their project. Students should expect to have up to 20 hours of contact time with their supervisors plus 500 hours of research work, supported by the School’s technicians and other research workers, over the course of their research projects.

Each of the optional modules involves typically 19 hours of lectures in addition to tutorials, laboratory work and assignments.

Dissertation/report
In order to develop your research skills and critical thinking you will undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through individual and group project work, lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. You will participate for free in a field trip to mainland Europe and in several site visits in the UK. You will be assessed through essays, individual and group projects, presentations, reports, an unseen written examination and the dissertation.

We make every effort to bundle teaching for the core modules on two days per week so that students studying on a flexible basis can attend lectures one day per week. However, due to timetabling and venue availability restrictions no guarantee can be given that we will be able to offer this every year. There is also no guarantee that the electives you may wish to choose will be offered on the same day as the rest of your classes. Your coursework may require you to dedicate more than one slot per week on fieldwork or study.

Fieldwork
A field trip will take place in the reading week of term two.

The Genetics of Human Disease MSc aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of molecular genetics, quantitative and statistical genetics and human disease and how this can be applied to improve healthcare through the development and application of diagnostic tests and therapeutic agents.

Degree Information

The programme provides a thorough grounding in modern approaches to the understanding of the genetics of disease alongside the cutting-edge research methods and techniques used to advance our understanding of development of disease. Core modules provide a broad coverage of the genetics of disease, research skills and social aspects, whilst specialised streams in Inherited Diseases, Pharmacogenetics and Computational Genomics, in which students can qualify, and the research project allow more in-depth analysis in areas of genetics.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits) and two specialist modules (30 credits) and a research project culminating in a dissertation (90 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma consisting of six modules (four core modules in term one and two modules within the selected stream in term two) is offered, full-time nine months.

Students undertake an original research project investigating topical questions in genetics and genetics of human disease which culminates in a dissertation of 12,000 to 14,000 words and an oral presentation.

Teaching and learning
Students develop their knowledge and understanding of genetics of human diseases through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and journal clubs. Taught modules are assessed by unseen written examination and/or, written reports, oral presentations and coursework. The research project is assessed by the dissertation and oral presentation.

Careers

Advanced training in genetic techniques including bioinformatic and statistical approaches positions graduates well for PhD studentships in laboratories using genetic techniques to examine diseases such as heart disease, cancer and neurological disorders. Another large group will seek research jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, or jobs related to genetics in healthcare organisations.

Employability
The MSc in Genetics of Human Disease facilitates acquisition of knowledge and skills relevant to a career in research in many different biomedical disciplines. About half of our graduates enter a research career by undertaking and completing PhDs and working as research associates/scientists in academia. Some of our graduates go on to jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, while others enter careers with clinical genetic diagnosis services, particularly in molecular genetics, in healthcare organisations and hospitals around the world. Those graduates with a prior medical training often utilise their new skills as clinical geneticists.

Placement
We are able to offer a limited number of clinical placements in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in various NHS Trusts. Places are not guaranteed and are based on availability. The placements are a minimum of one day a week for a period of 8 weeks and will be supervised by medical and non-medical consultants within the service. Placements are observational only and will not be formally assessed but may offer opportunities to participate in research studies and other academic and teaching activities in the host Trust.

Careers

The programme provides career development training for doctors, psychologists and practitioners in social work and education who intend to focus and develop their careers in the areas of child mental health. This is a relatively new programme and specific career destinations data is not yet available. However, recent graduates have gone on to Clinical Doctorates in Psychology or had opportunities for progression in their current careers.

Employability
The programme attracts psychology graduates who wish to gain entry to a doctoral training programme in clinical psychology, and trainees in child psychiatry who wish to supplement their basic training with a higher degree; the MSc programme is closely aligned to the Royal College’s recommended curriculum. Students from social work, nursing and education will benefit from the acquisition of advanced skills in the theory and practice of working with young people with mental health difficulties. Clinical placements are available as an extra-curricular option for students who aim to develop their career in a profession related to clinical practice.
