This successful one year training programme is designed to support the professional development of special educational needs coordinators (SENCOS). Gain 60 credits at masters level and join the hundreds of SENCOs in the South West Consortium who have already gained the award. Key features

-Take the opportunity to undertake this Department for Education (DfE) approved post-graduate qualification which must be achieved by teachers new to the role of SENCO. If you are an experienced SENCO or working in a related professional role you can also apply. To achieve the National Award you must have QTS/QTLS, and if not it may be possible for you to achieve the PgCert Inclusive Education (60 masters level credits).

Course details

You'll complete two modules (each worth 30 masters level credits) which include a total of six days attendance at sessions in your local authority location. As well as four school focused/research days. Each module consists of three full days taught sessions and two recommended study days (four total) which you will individually agree with your own organisation. The modules are designed to explicitly relate to the DfE SENCO Learning Outcomes.

The Postgraduate Certificate National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) is for all qualified teachers either aspiring to become a SENCO or working within the role. Our course aims to build on your significant experience and expertise by learning alongside experts from the field through a range of learning and teaching experiences.

The course is delivered by the University of Chester’s Faculty of Education and Children’s Services, who are a nationally recognised provider and a member of the National Award for SEN Coordination provider group.

This course fulfills the training requirements of The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2015) which envisages that a SENCO will provide leadership and professional guidance to colleagues and will work closely with staff, parents and carers, etc. It challenges SENCOs to promote person-centred, inclusive, practice in which the interests and needs of pupils with SEN and/or disabilities are at the heart of everything that they do.

It takes as its ideology the notion that person-centred, inclusive thinking that foregrounds individual interests and needs of children, young people and adults with SEN and/or disabilities is at the heart of all practice. It is based on the premise that parents and carers are equal partners in securing achievement, progress and well-being, and that value-free understanding of social and familial contexts is crucial in responding to a child, young person or vulnerable adult with SEN.

The University of Birmingham is a Department for Education and National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) approved provider for the National Award for SEN Co-ordination.

It has been running accredited (Masters level) professional development programmes for special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCos) for over 15 years. Over a thousand SENCos have successfully completed their training over this period and given excellent course feedback!

The University runs partnership versions of the National Award for SEN Co-ordination course with the following Local Authority partners: Birmingham; Dudley, Sandwell & Wolverhampton (combined cohort); Staffordshire (Entrust).

Within these Local Authority areas teachers wishing to apply for a place on the course work in a range of maintained mainstream schools, maintained nursery schools, academy and free schools, and pupil referral units (PRUs).

SENCos working in other neighbouring Local Authority areas may also be able to join one of the partnership courses (in 2014-2015 for example, SENCos from Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Solihull, Telford and Wrekin and Warwickshire were participating in versions of the course).

This Masters level course (60 credits) has been updated to reflect changes to the NCTL learning outcomes framework. It is also closely aligned to the changes taking place to special educational needs and disability policy, provision and practice in England including the changes to SEN Code of Practice (2015).

The training courses are 12 months in duration; however SENCos have up to three years from the point at which they are designated as a lead SENCo in which to complete the award. Final responsibility for ensuring the school’s compliance lies with the school’s governing body.

The course is designed to support a SENCo’s professional development, giving them an opportunity to reflect upon and improve their practice whilst learning more about the coordination of special educational needs, leadership and management, policy and supporting the individual needs of children and young people.

You learn to lead, develop and evaluate inclusive cultures, systems and approaches to education. These new skills help you to make a difference in your school and to the wellbeing, participation and achievement of children and young people who have special educational needs and disabilities.

You reflect on, analyse and respond to current issues of practice through professional learning in the workplace and you are supported by experienced local special educational needs and disability (SEND) professionals. You develop:

You have access to current SEND practitioners who share up-to-date practice. Your university tutors specialise in SEND and have complementary experience across age phases and special and mainstream schools. Their expertise supports your understanding of inclusive principles and practice, using research and theory to support your reflections, enquiries and study skills.

You complete a number of assessments that are focused on the development of effective practice in your school. Assessments consist of two practice-based portfolios:

Portfolio 1 – SENCO as manager
This consists of:
-An evaluation of school policy relating to special educational needs and disability in relation to current national policy and guidance. This involves engaging with parent voice.
-An evaluation of the school’s additional provision for children and young people with special educational needs. This includes an analysis of school data and lesson study to inform effective provision mapping.

Portfolio 2 – SENCO as leader
This consists of:
-Developing the role of SENCO as leader through evaluating and developing effective partnerships with other stakeholders.
-Designing professional guidance materials to support colleagues in making effective provision for children with particular SEN or disability.

What will I study?

The taught element of the course will comprise two Level 7 modules, one per semester, which provide elements applicable to Special Educational Needs, inclusion, understanding barriers to learning, leadership, and collaborative working.

How will I study?

You will study online and will be required to attend four face-to-face sessions during the programme.

The face-to-face sessions will be held in central locations such as Edge Hill University, London, Birmingham and Gateshead (subject to numbers).

How will I be assessed?

The programme will be assessed via two reflective portfolios (one in each module). These will include practice-based assessment tasks and a critical reflection of 2,500 words. You will also be required to collate a portfolio of evidence in relation to the 49 SENCo Standards.

You will be taught by well qualified and experienced tutors with expertise in the field of special needs, together with potential input from the Local Authority.

What are my career prospects?

This award has been described as ‘mandatory’ by the Department for Education for new SENCos working in the mainstream sector. 3. The professional role of the SENCO and the role of leadership.
4. Assessment and planning.
5. Working in partnership with others.

Independent set tasks

The set tasks all involve school-based activities and include:
1. One day (equivalent) of meetings with your head teacher to focus on the professional role of the SENCO and review how to meet your learning outcomes. It is recommended this is around two hours a term.
2. Half day visit to an alternative phase mainstream setting, focussing on the professional role of the SENCO, low / high incidence of SEN and disabilities, participation and learning, and working in partnership with other professionals.
3. Half day visit to either a community special school or a special school focussing on a particular needs, for example autism. The focus is on high incidence of SEN and disabilities, participation and learning, and working in partnership with other professionals.
4. Half day attendance at a multi-professional / multi-agency meeting, with a focus on working with other professionals.
5. Two days in school to undertake tasks linked to the written assignments, with a focus on conducting an inquiry, audit and evaluation of provision and working with pupils, parents and colleagues.
6. Half day optional attendance at a tutorial on Meeting the Learning Outcomes at NTU. If you decide not to attend this, you may use the time for further course related work in school.

Masters level study

The Master's component consists of four compulsory tasks:
1. A critical review of legislation, policy and literature as it relates to the SENCO role.
2. A critical review of SEN policy in action within your school
3. A small-scale research study about improving pupil achievement.
4. A critical analysis of school practice of consulting, engaging and communicating with pupils and parents.

Course outline

Our programme aims to provide a structured opportunity to widen knowledge and understanding of key issues, to develop and practise skills, and to reflect on the values and attitudes which will support SENCOs in their work. This will be supplemented firstly by the identification of a group of course participants who work collaboratively and supportively, and who facilitate hosting of visits to one another's settings, and beyond, to work together and to access opportunities which complement the previous experience of the participant. Secondly, through support offered by a suitable identified mentor within the school or setting of the course member, we will facilitate opportunities relevant to the academic and professional portfolio of the participant, and support on matters of leadership and strategic development.

Schools and settings supporting their SENCos in the professional development associated with this course will need to be aware that they will need to be released from their setting-based responsibilities in order to attend the induction (half a day), 6 face-to-face days and a number of group meetings/visits, in addition to some individual study time. They will need to support introduction of a SENCo-led change project and subsequent research, and to provide opportunities for leading staff meetings, interacting with the governing body and the senior leadership team.

Graduate destinations

Completing the course will earn you a Postgraduate Certificate, equivalent to a third of a masters. Credits from this award can be put towards an MA in Education Professional Practice, contributing to the named Inclusionary Practice pathway.

Other admission requirements

An honours degree or equivalent from a recognised institution if you are a UK resident. EU and overseas applicants appropriate equivalence will apply. Applicants without standard qualifications must demonstrate:
-The capacity for theoretical debate.
-A high level of motivation.
-The capacity for independent study.
-The ability to achieve the proposed programme of work.

Students for whom English is not their first language must have achieved IELTS level 6 English language qualification.

All participants must be holders of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). They must also be holders of the post of SENCO; this can be either as a new SENCO, or as an experienced SENCO. At Chester the NASENCo also forms part of the MA in Special Educational Needs and Disability.

Teaching and learning

Our department has a thriving community of research-active staff and research scholars. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 95% of our research was internationally recognised and 60% of the impact of our research was rated internationally excellent.

Prof. Margaret Harris has been awarded a grant of over £315K from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to find out whether technological advances to aid children and babies with hearing loss have had a positive effect on deaf children’s literacy.

Prof. Anna Barnett and her colleague Dr Luci Wiggs have been awarded a grant of £59K from The Waterloo Foundation to examine sleep disturbance in children with and without Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). This condition is characterised by significant movement difficulty and associated psycho-social and educational problems. Previous work suggests that sleep disturbance may be a relevant factor and this project will examine sleep in DCD with extensive and objective measures in relation to child and parent functioning.

Dr Kate Wilmut has been awarded a prestigious ESRC grant of over £160k to conduct research into forward planning of movement in children with and without Developmental Coordination Disorder. It is hoped that furthering our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this condition may lead to the development of effective intervention programmes.

With funding from the Leverhulme Trust, Prof. Vince Connelly is leading an interdisciplinary project conducting research into the writing problems of children with language difficulties. Embracing psychology, education and linguistics, this ground-breaking project is aimed at bridging the gaps in current knowledge and will help practitioners to develop literacy strategies to help this already disadvantaged group of children.

Dr Clare Rathbone has been awarded a grant from the ESRC to examine the relationship between memory and identity across the lifespan. Memory impairments can lead to more than mere forgetfulness; they can affect our sense of self and identity. This work will explore the changes in memory that take place in both normal ageing and in dementia.

Professor Margaret Harris and Dr Mark Burgess were awarded £640k by the Technology Strategy Board, a public research council that facilitates innovative technological collaboration between businesses and researchers. They are conducting multi-method research into the critical socio-psychological factors that underpin people’s transition from traditional combustion engine cars to ultra low carbon vehicles and are feeding their results back to car manufacturers, energy companies, and the government.

Developmental Psychology Research Group
There are three main strands to research in this group:
1. Cognitive & Social Development - this includes work on the impact of socio-cultural contexts on human cognition and identity development, children’s evaluation of other people as sources of information, children’s understanding of emotion, the nature of mother-child interactions, children’s interactions with their peers and explanations for school bullying

2. Language & Literacy - this has a focus on the development of speech, reading, spelling, writing and handwriting

3. Developmental Disorders - this includes research on children with hearing impairment, Specific Language Impairment, Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism and sleep disorders.

Some of our research focuses on the description of typical development and explanation of developmental processes in different domains. Other work is concerned with understanding the mechanisms underlying atypical development and an examination of ways to support children and their families. Several staff in this research group work with professionals from other disciplines including health and education and are concerned with the production of practical assessment tools and the evaluation of intervention approaches to help children achieve their full potential.

- Adult Cognition Research Group
Research in this group covers the exploration of basic mechanisms as well as higher order processes in normal and atypical populations. A variety of methods are employed (behavioural and psychophysical measures, eye-tracking, movement analysis, and neuropsychological instruments). Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. The National Award for SEN Coordination is a one year, part time postgraduate certificate course, which, on successful completion of the assessed work will give SENCOs 60 Masters level credits (the equivalent to a third of a full Masters).

You will, however, still be able to attend all sessions and on successful completion of the 3x20 credit modules, will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs. If you later become the SENCO (within 3 years of enrolment) it is possible to submit a Portfolio of Learning Outcomes specific to the SENCO role. Format

The National Award for SEN Co-ordination comprises 9 full days taught input and 2 half day sessions.

You'll be fully supported through expert teaching, practical discussions with other participants and direct email tutorial support.

Cohorts are run throughout the academic year, to respond to interest and demand, and can be set up in different teaching venues to make it more accessible for a group of SENCOs.

Assessment

A range of written assignments.

Funding

-Masters Loans-

From 2016/17 government loans of up to £10,000 are available for postgraduate Masters study. The loans will be paid directly to students by the Student Loans Company and will be subject to both personal and course eligibility criteria.
