The “Master in Advanced European and International Studies” provides an overarching and extensive view of the political, social, economic and cultural issues of the present times. Its encompassing teaching method and study-trips help the students to gain a complete understanding of international politics. The programme follows an original approach that distinguishes it from other Master's courses in European Studies and International Relations: the European Integration and Global studies programme is taught in English and in three different study-locations: Berlin, Nice, Rome.

Programe

Nice

The academic year starts in Nice (from October to December), it encompasses classes on the basics of all the four modules (International Relations, European Integration, Economy and Globalisation and Federalism and Governance), completed by the seminar « Project cycle management », the core part of the fifth module "Professional Skills Workshops".

Berlin

In Berlin the programme focuses on the experiences of Eastern and Central European countries following their accession to the European Union as well as those fundamental problems with which Turkey and other future candidate countries are faced.
During this period the participants take their midterm exams.
A one week study trip takes them to the European institutions and international organisations in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.

Rome

The third term deals with the relations of the European Union with candidate countries, as well as with Caucasus countries, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
The programme concludes in Rome, where we have a long-term relationship with the University EuroSapienza and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI).

Curriculum

Conflict and cooperation in the international system

A theoretically grounded approach to revisit the continuities and changes of international relations. Following a theoretical introduction into the grand schools of thought of international relations theory, we will approach the interdisciplinary field of conflict and violence studies. From its very beginning, understanding and explaining questions of war and peace has been at the heart of 'International Relations' as an academic discipline. A special focus will be attributed to inter-group violence and inter-state conflicts in both the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe: from the Western Balkans to Cyprus, from Israel to Palestine, from Ukraine to Syria.

European Integration and external action

This seminar aims at familiarising the students, who could well become the next generation of European and international decision-makers, with an expert knowledge of the structures, institutions, and problems of the European Union.We focus firstly on the historical development of European unification and then go on to analyse the Union’s institutions and study the basics of EU law. The last part of the program is devoted to the different policies of the EU and especially emphasises the challenges of enlargement.

Federalism, multi-level governance and conflict resolution

For the last fifteen years, federalism has known a revival as an international field of studies. In this framework, three major developments can be considered. The first is the study of the European Union, not analysed any more as a process of integration but in terms of federal institutional comparative approach. The second development is multi-level governance, that can be conceived as an extension of federalism as it deals with any form of multi-tier institutional system. This cooperative/competitive approach has appeared to understand the institutional consequences of the process of globalisation in post-industrialised societies, and of the subsequent changing of nature of sovereignty in the relevant states. Eventually, federalism has become a tool of conflict resolution, in order to resolve violent conflicts all over the world.

Economy, globalisation and sustainable development

The module puts a specific focus on the role of the EU as an economic actor on the global stage, with its opportunities and challenges driven both by European specific evolutions and globalisation trends. Finally, the module proposes an introduction to global sustainable development issues (climate change, access to water, etc.), as they are among the most decisive challenges that will shape the future of the world economy.

Professional Skills Workshops

This module equips the participants with the professional skills and competences that will enable them to work in the context of the European and international organisations. They will take actively part in several simulation games and follow workshops on project cycle management, intercultural management, as well as on mediation and negotiation.

Course Details

Candidates can select a research topic from a wide range of areas within cooperative studies, rural and international development and food marketing. Scholarships are sometimes available depending on research interests.

Format

The MSc usually involves primary research and the completion of a written thesis. You will be assigned a supervisor to give advice at every stage of the research process. Departmental progress reviews are carried out at regular intervals.

The course is 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice, based on four core units of study: Foundations in Health and Nursing; Patients with Acute and Short-Term Needs; Patients with Long-Term Conditions and Complex Needs; Transitions to Practice: managing and organising care.

Teaching and learning

This course uses an innovative problem- based learning strategy to help you think about real clinical practice scenarios. A strong emphasis on cooperative learning helps you manage unfamiliar situations, make reasoned decisions, adapt to change, and plan your future learning. It’s a realistic and challenging preparation for registration.

Assessment

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory Thesis. The Thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a Thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the Thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a Thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

This Executive MAS Programme, jointly run by the Global Studies Institute (GSI) of the University of Geneva and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), is designed to prepare participants for leadership roles in government and international organisations.

Participants will benefit from the expertise of over 100 highly qualified academics, experienced diplomats, government officials and distinguished practitioners from around the world. It is designed to advance participants' knowledge base and through practical application demonstrates its relevance to the implementation of effective and sustainable policies, which contribute to global peace and stability.

Programme Aims:

Enhance participant understandings of peace and stability in national, ‘world-regional’ and global contexts by:
• Identifying and characterizing strategic threats to peace and stability;
• Analysing the changing nature of actors that seek to manage existing and emergent threats;
• Assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of current policy responses and debating possible future alternative policy options

The MAS provides not just space for academic reflection, but also provides participants with skills, knowledge and networksenabling participants to constructively and critically inform policy debates and discourse by:

Full Accreditation

Participants who complete the programme successfully will be awarded a 60 ECTS Master of Advanced Studies in International and European Security by the University of Geneva and the GCSP. It has also received the highest level of accreditation awarded to degrees in Switzerland by the AAQ. As a result, the MAS degree receives automatic equivalence in most countries worldwide.

Module 1: The Foundations of International Security

This module will provide an introduction and analysis of challenges and actors that shape the security context, such as the growing environment, economy and energy nexus, international law, human security and globalisation. It will enable participants to identify the range of structural and systemic dynamics that shape our understanding of the strategic context, linking different schools of thought and levels of analysis to practice.

Module 2: Actors and Issues in International Security

This module enhances participant understanding of security policy through a focus on the evolving role of traditional and emerging international security leaders, in addition to conflict management and transnational security challenges. These will be considered both from a hard and human security perspective. It will also expose them to a wide range of readings and specialist speakers, both scholars and practitioners.

Module 3: Regional & Global Security

This module will concentrate on cooperative and competitive dynamics in emerging regions such as sub-Saharan Africa; the Middle East and North Africa; conditions in South Asia; and developments in China and the Asia-Pacific region. It will build upon the analysis of challenges,actors and responses in the first two modules within the context of emerging regions.

Module 4: Issues and Concepts in International Security

This interdisciplinary module consists of a number of lectures and research methods seminars held throughout the entire nine-month period. Issues in international security are theoretically analysed within a multidisciplinary approach i.e. history, economics, law, political science and political philosophy. The conceptual lectures academically complement and reinforce the more practical and policy-orientated teaching and seminar work of the first three Modules. They broaden and deepen participant appreciation of the relationships between International Relations as an academic discipline and international relations as a daily practice.

Module 5: Research Paper (10-12000 words)

Under the supervision of professors from both the University and the GCSP, participants will write a research paper on a security policy-related topic. This module allows participants to develop their ability to write a research paper incorporating the lessons learned during the first four modules, and from individual and group analytical work. To provide the opportunity to demonstrate an ability to select useful sources and literature for structured research through pertinent and scientifically valid arguments, in accordance with academic standards.

This course is designed for graduates with a background in business or business related studies, who wish to specialise in HRM with a view to pursuing a career as an HRM practitioner either as a functional specialist or in other areas of management which involves significant people management responsibilities. The MSc in Creative Technologies and Enterprise (CTE) is designed for people who have a grounding in computing and business skills (whether through study or experience), and are seeking to develop their creative and research abilities in order to adapt to the digital economy or prepare themselves for future research in this field. Future industries depend upon people who are equipped with creative ideas, entrepreneurial skills and technological knowledge. This course will prepare you for a rapidly-changing global digital economy in which your ability to adapt on-the-fly and make creative contributions will be your major resource.

The course has been planned with enterprise partners and offers opportunities for national and international placements throughout. It makes use of Bath Spa University’s close links with Hartham Park, with its superb digital infrastructure and many linked businesses.

The course is connected to the Integrated Master’s in Creative Technologies and Enterprise, which is a four-year programme from Bachelors level through to full Master’s. This ‘stand-alone’ Master’s has a number of features in common with that course, but also some differences, such as the expectation of prior computing and business experience, and the presence of research as a particular feature of the programme.

Underpinning your skills and knowledge will be a solid grounding in entrepreneurship, project management, software programming, and creative thinking. Through a series of creative projects you will have the opportunity to work with commercial and industrial partners to advance your understanding and experience the sector.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course will typically include national and international placements, giving you the opportunity to develop your existing skills in whatever sector of the digital and creative industries to which you may currently be committed. You will be undertaking self-devised individual or collaborative creative projects. There will be a considerable degree of autonomy associated with these projects, but they will all be the subject of prior negotiation with academic staff and industrial partners.

You will be taught research methods and undertake your own research project. Research in CTE is inherently transdisciplinary, which creates particular challenges when considering appropriate methodologies. The course will explore these fully, looking at quantitative and qualitative methods, action research and other creative methods.

You will seek to understand, through both practice and theory, the nature of both “creativity” and “innovation”. These are crucial concepts whose definition is the subject if much discussion and research. The course sets out to explore them so that you will be able to apply the knowledge that results in the professional domain. This aspect of the course is characterised by a shared sense of discovery as we work towards a full realisation.

You will encounter emerging technologies that will place you at the cutting-edge of developments in the digital economy. You will also build a solid base of research skills and methods that will provide you with the means to contribute to Research and Development or to develop your own research projects.

MODULES

Emerging Technologies: 30 credits
This module aims to develop students' knowledge of, and to provide hands-on practical engagement with, emerging creative technologies. These include cutting-edge developments in hardware, software and communications as appropriate. Significant input to the module is provided by enterprise partners working in creative technology research and development. Assessment is by critical analysis and seminar presentation.

Research Methods: 30 credits
This module provides a grounding in research methods for creative technologies projects, including the dynamics of creativity, offering students methodologies and techniques to support and develop their learning throughout their course of study. The module will cover literature reviews, creative practice research methodologies and practice-led research, as well as critical and scholarly approaches to analysis, quantitative and qualitative approaches including laboratory evaluation, surveys, case studies and action research. Students will be given techniques in methods of collaborative and cooperative working as well as systems of the development of creative ideas and research. Assessment is by critical commentary and group presentation.

Specialist Option: 30 credits
This provides an opportunity to select a module from a portfolio offered across Bath Spa University at this level.

Research Project: 30 credits
This module will give students a practical understanding of the different methods of undertaking, disseminating, and presenting research projects in creative technologies, as well as practical experience in presenting their research to an audience. The module also aims to encourage students to think about how their own creative technologies work is best communicated to a range of different audiences, ranging from academics, industry specialists and the general public. The module will consist of a series of taught lectures followed by tutorial support, while students will work towards an assessed presentation of their own research.

Industry Showcase (Major Project): 60 credits
This module aims to develop students’ individual and collaborative creative abilities in the digital economy. The module comprises a number of negotiated projects that are normally collaborative and may be undertaken locally or internationally as industrial placements or internships, which will result in a major industry showcase event. Assessment is by contribution to the showcase, portfolio of work and personal journal. There is a larger 90 credit major project which is only available in special circumstances, where students have already acquired the requisite skills and knowledge contained in one of the taught modules.
