The Product Design Enterprise MSc was developed to interest graduates from a business or design background. To enhance knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying professional product design, and enable the student to develop appropriate entrepreneurial skills enabling viable manufacturing, marketing or business enterprises.

The programme requires the student to undertake 10 taught modules and to complete a major project of approximately 15,000 words. The abrupt end in the early 1990s of Japan’s seemingly unstoppable economic growth plunged the nation into two decades of recession, which has in turn brought to the fore a range of social and political issues accumulated since the Second World War.

The end of Japanese economic superiority also coincided with the end of the Cold War, an event that brought about new regional and global dynamics, and with them new security challenges.

Meanwhile, Japanese culture has experienced a renaissance, with Japan recognised worldwide as a centre of global ‘cool’, and Japanese cultural products continuing to find new markets and influence new demographics worldwide.

The overall picture is of a rapidly changing nation in the vanguard of post-industrial societies — fascinating not only for its rich traditional heritage and diversity, but also for what its recent experience can tell us about world trends.

Understanding such complexity requires an interdisciplinary approach, and we offer you the opportunity to explore Japanese history, international relations, politics, religion, and arts, and help you see the connections between them.

Using Japanese source materials in tandem with the extensive English language literature on Japan, we will help you build upon and develop your own interests, focus on the aspects of Japan that fascinate you, and support you as you carry out your own original research project.

This masters degree course consists of a curriculum specialising in cool-climate wine production, climate change effects on viticulture, terroir and sparkling wine. It also includes opportunities to visit other wine-producing areas in Europe. The Wine Department staff have considerable international expertise and research experience, and a brand new Wine Research Centre was completed in March 2014. This combination of experienced staff and modern research facilities will enable students to access an outstanding Masters-level education.

Course structure:

The programme aims to enable students to develop a deep and systematic understanding of wine science (oenology) and related disciplines, and then apply this knowledge to make viticultural and oenological decisions in complex circumstances.

Areas of study:

Students will be required to attend a two-week intensive course in vinegrowing and winemaking at the start of the programme.

The first semester comprises of three modules which enable students to gain and apply knowledge and understanding of current research in grapevine physiology, wine chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology.

The second semester focuses on climate & terroir and sparkling wine. Students wishing to complete with the Post-Graduate Diploma in Viticulture & Oenology may elect to complete a dissertation and end their studies at this point. Students who intend to study for the full Masters degree will normally take an in-depth research methods module prior to commencing their Masters project.

The third semester is designed to allow students to complete their Masters project, which can be undertaken in the newly opened UK Wine Research Centre, or in another suitable location.

Overview

Electrical power is an essential infrastructure of our society. Adequate and uninterrupted supply of electrical power of the required quality is essential for industries, commercial establishments and residences; and almost any type of human activity is impossible without the use of electricity. The ever-increasing cost of fuels required for power generation, restricted availability in many parts of the world, demand for electricity fueled by industrial growth and shortage of skilled engineers to design, operate and maintain power network components are problems felt everywhere today. The Master of Engineering (Electrical Systems) is designed to address the last-mentioned constraint, especially in today’s context where the field of electrical power is not perceived as being ‘cool’ unlike computers and communications and other similar nascent fields experiencing explosive growth. But it is often forgotten that even a highly complex and sophisticated data centre needs huge amounts of power of extremely high reliability, without which it is just so much silicon (and copper).

This program presents the topics at two levels. The first year addresses the design level where the student learns how to design the components of a power system such as generation, transmission and distribution as well as the other systems contributing to the safety of operation. The topics in the first year also cover the automation and control components that contribute to the high level of reliability expected from today’s power systems. Because of the constraints imposed by the fuel for power generation and the environmental degradation that accompanies power generation by fossil fuels, the attention today is focused on renewable energy sources and also more importantly how to make the generation of power more efficient and less polluting so that you get a double benefit of lower fuel usage and lower environmental impact. Even the best designed systems need to be put together efficiently. Setting up power generation and transmission facilities involves appreciable capital input and complex techniques for planning, installation and commissioning. Keeping this in view, a unit covering project management is included in the first year.

The second year of the program focuses on the highly complex theory of power systems. If the power system has to perform with a high degree of reliability and tide over various disturbances that invariably occur due to abnormal events in the power system, it is necessary to use simulation techniques that can accurately model a power system and predict its behavior under various possible disturbance conditions. These aspects are covered in the course units dealing with power system analysis and stability studies for steady-state, dynamic and transient conditions. The aspect of power quality and harmonic flow studies is also included as a separate unit.

The study of power systems has an extensive scope and besides the topics listed above, a student may also like to cover some other related topic of special interest. The ‘Special Topics in Electrical Power Systems’ unit aims to provide students with the opportunity for adding one ‘state-of-the art’ topic from a list of suggested fields. Examples are: Smart grids, Micro-grids and Geographic Information System (GIS) application in utility environment.

The Masters Thesis which spans over two complete semesters is the capstone of the program, requiring a high level of personal autonomy and accountability, and reinforces the knowledge and skill base developed in the preceding units. As a significant research component of the course, this program component will facilitate research, critical evaluation and the application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative, enabling the students to critique current professional practice in the electrical power industry.

The UK has a world leading comedy pedigree, but no industry recognised comedy training course - until now. The new 18 month part-time NFTS Diploma in Writing and Producing Comedy will enable students to develop all forms of scripted and unscripted comedy including, sitcoms, sketch shows, and panel shows for radio and tv. The course is run in partnership with Channel 4.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Writing & Producing Comedy commences in January each year. Students are taught by the renowned comedy producer and writer BILL DARE supported by guest sessions from the people responsible for some of the UK’s most iconic UK shows including Peep Show, Father Ted, Have I Got News for You, Spitting Image, Horrible Histories and Green Wing.

The course is part-time (one evening a week and occasional Saturdays) over eighteen months and is delivered in central London. You will be expected to spend at least 8 hours a week working on assignments for the course. You will leave the course with a portfolio of material developed during the course, this could include a ten-minute taster tape of an idea you have developed, or a full script and some sketches and one-liners.

The NFTS want to encourage applications from the brightest and best talent out there….from all backgrounds. We are actively seeking to redress imbalances within the Industry by encouraging applications from under-represented groups, and have bursaries of £4650 on offer to 2 of the successful candidates. Bursaries help towards the cost of the course andwill be awarded to stand out talent who can demonstrate that without this funding they would not be able to afford the course, or who can demonstrate they bring a unique and distinct perspective and voice to the course.

Study petroleum geophysics in Thailand and benefit from modern training by leading international researchers and industry specialists at Chiang Mai University in a newly renovated and equipped facility. The courses will be taught in English.

The Department of Geological Sciences, sponsored by Thailand's major oil company PTT Exploration and Production provides a one year four months full time Petroleum Geophysics MSc. for international students.

The course is designed for students with English as a second language, and provides instruction for improving English, and as well as extra time from the usual 1 year course to help accommodate the difficulties of learning in a second language. Few scholarships are available.
The course runs from 14th August through to December (16 month period), and is offered annually. There is 1 year of class work given in 4 week modules, a geological fieldtrip, and a 4 months research project.

This is an intensive, vocational course with strong professional links to the industry, offering a maximum of four students, with high levels of painting and drawing skills, the opportunity to develop their careers as scenic artists. The skills and techniques acquired on this course are to the level necessary for theatre, television, film and animation industries..

During the year students acquire an understanding of professional practice and standards, and gain in-depth skills and experience in scenic art techniques and their application, combined with the practice of managing a scenic art department.

The Course has 3 very intensive terms during which students paint the sets for the School’s six main house public productions, offering them the opportunity to see their finished work used on stage in a wide range of public performances and venues. Teaching is led by the School’s Head of Scenic Art in collaboration with visiting industry professionals who provide master-classes in a range of skills and techniques that include; life drawing, portraiture, perspective, marbling, wood-graining, polystyrene carving and painting for animation. The scenic art students work collaboratively with the School’s other production departments, and most especially with design students. Furthering their introduction to the industry, work placements with principal companies are arranged during the course; particular attention is placed on students developing their own professional portfolio. Upon graduation students will showcase their work in a public exhibition and be interviewed by some of the UK’s leading industry practitioners. In a freelance industry most of our graduates begin working as assistants for scenic artists, scenic workshops and large theatre companies, eventually becoming supervising scenic artists themselves.

Recent graduate employment; The Royal Opera House, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Cardiff Theatrical Services, The Royal National Theatre, Northern Ballet, TR2 Plymouth, Richard Nutbourne - Cool Flight Ltd, Cameron Macintosh's National Tour of ‘Mary Poppins’, Disney's ‘Aladdin’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ for Warner Brothers. Film work includes; Wes Anderson's ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and ‘Isle of Dogs’ (still in production) Tim Burton's ‘Frankenweenie’, Aardman Animations' ‘Shaun the Sheep’, ‘Pirates’ and ‘Early Man’ (still in production). TV work includes 'Will' for TNT and ‘Crazy Face’ for Netflix.
