The School has over 400 teaching/research staff and a student body of over 7000 and have campuses in Southwark, South London and Havering in Essex. The course provides a detailed exposure to the context, issues and methods used to analyse the increasingly complex problems which are found in the defence environment and to support decision making. It exposes the types of analysis and allows practical experience of tools and methods which are used, ranging from judgemental analysis through mathematical techniques to models and simulations. The course includes judgemental elicitation and analysis techniques, mathematical analysis methods (including optimisation), war gaming and combat modelling, logistics modelling and simulation methods. The use and utility of all the methods are explored through practical exercises and studies.

On successful completion of the course you will be familiar with the technologies, methodologies, principles and terminology of Modelling and Simulation as used across defence, including the challenges and issues as well as the benefits. Format

Each module typically consists of 24 lectures, 12 hours of continuous assessment, plus additional supplemental reading and study, carried out over one of two 12-week semesters from September to December (Semester 1), or January to March (Semester 2). The exact workload in each teaching period will depend on the choice of modules. In addition, a substantial weekly commitment to the project module ME6019 is expected over both semesters.

Assessment

Individual modules have different methods of assessment but this typically consists of a single end-of-semester examination in December or April/May, plus continuous assessment throughout the relevant semester. This continuous assessment may consist of a combination of in-class tests, formal laboratories or practicals, design exercises, project work, written reports and presentations. Any repeat examinations are held in August.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. This well-established course comprises four units followed by a dissertation:

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. About the programme

In many engineering organisations ERP is the main software system application that controls and assists in the management of all functional departments and the whole facility, often globally. This unique programme has a UK and global appeal for career development and future plans are currently being developed to offer SAP ERP certification. It satisfies both the operations management and continuous improvement (CI) elements within engineering, and the application of ERP systems such as SAP and/or Oracle. More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

The accelerated design of the course allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. This experience acts as good preparation for entering the stimulating and evolving world of health and social care as a qualified member of the workforce.

A key feature of this course is the problem-based learning approach which involves you working in a small group with a shared responsibility for meeting the learning outcomes for each module.

Occupational Therapy at LSBU has a dedicated team of tutors who utilise their wealth of knowledge, skills and clinical experiences of working in health and social care to inform the teaching programme. Year 1:
- Introduction to occupation
This module develops an understanding of the healthy individual across the age range. You will explore people's roles and relationships and their engagement in occupation/activity. The environments in which individuals participate such as; home, school, and community will be considered. Occupational therapy philosophy will be introduced and the scope of the profession explored. An understanding of relevant underpinning knowledge such as: human development, psychosocial theories, anatomy and physiology will be developed. Professional ethics and behaviour will also be introduced.

- Assessment of occupational performance
In this module the focus is on the assessment phase of the occupational therapy (OT) process. You will be able to appraise the concepts of assessment and evaluate standardised and non-standardised assessments. Occupational/activity analysis is introduced and evidence-based practice skills begin to develop. This module will explore common experiences associated with the ageing process.

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 1
This module focuses on the processes of problem identification, goal setting and intervention planning and introduces intervention strategies. You will continue to develop knowledge of theories and models influencing Occupational Therapy practice. Evidence-based practice begins to emerge more strongly.

Year 2:
- Enabling occupational performance and participation 2
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the intervention planning and intervention stages of the OT process. You will be able to draw on the evidence base when selecting and implementing intervention strategies.;

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 3
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the implementation and evaluation of intervention in the OT process. It will also consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the whole OT Process. This module also develops understanding of environments and how they can be adapted to enhance occupational performance from the perspective of a child. These will be explored in the context of disability, inclusion, occupational identity and performance.

- Leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy
This module focuses on entrepreneurship, service innovation and development, it consolidates knowledge and skills related to personal management and prepares you to manage the complexities of a dynamic health and social care environment. The development of professional identity will also be explored.

- Research and scholarship in occupational therapy (MSc qualification only)
This is an optional module for the award of a preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy. Students who pass two out of three first year modules on the first attempt and achieve the required marks are given the option to enrol on Research and scholarship in occupational therapy module. This module is the equivalent to three modules and runs concurrent with other second year modules and a placement. Successful completion of this and the six postgraduate modules will result in being awarded preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy.

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a research proposal (MSc students only).

Employability

As well as the practical skills required to work as an occupational therapist, this course course develops the employability skills needed for a successful career, including verbal and written communication, negotiation and liaison, team work, organisation and self-management, leadership and management, and personal resilience as well as the ability to work with a diverse range of people whilst demonstrating the values and attributes as described in the NHS constitution.

- Occupational therapy as a career
On graduating you are eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This allows you to practice as an occupational therapist within the NHS, community services and local authorities, as well as social enterprises and the private sector. Other settings include prisons, residential and nursing homes, schools and social services.

- Salary
Occupational therapists beginning their career as allied health professionals in the NHS typically as a Band 5 with a starting salary of about £21,692. Salaries in local government are at similar levels.

Career development offers opportunities to move to higher grades in team leadership, clinical expert, service management and consultant therapist roles. Within the NHS, this can mean salaries in the band 7 and 8 range.

Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings, meeting the registration requirements of the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

At LSBU, we work closely with a number of healthcare organisations to provide a wide range of suitable clinical placements. You will therefore gain experience of working with:

- Acute and long-standing health needs (including physical, mental health and learning disability)
- Services in a range of settings (hospital and community, urban and rural)

Structure of placement learning:
Practice placements are in four blocks and are all full-time. You will work under the guidance of an occupational therapist (educator). The placements are developmental and occur at three levels, matching your knowledge and skills development whilst you progress through the course. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be an occupational therapist.

Placement settings:
Placements will predominantly be within the Greater London area in the NHS, local authority, voluntary, social enterprise, charities and private sectors. Placements can be in existing services as well as emerging services. Applicants should be aware that they may need to cover travel costs and placements could require them to commute across London (up to two hours).

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme. PDip students are not expected to take the MSc project (EL890).

Course detail

The programme reflects the latest developments in wireless communications, with particular emphasis on digital signal processing using embedded systems. It has been designed to produce high-calibre engineers that can specialise in and understand the complex system designs used in the wireless communications field.

Format and assessment

The programme is delivered by internationally leading researchers in our Communications and Instrumentation, Control & Embedded Systems groups. They provide first-hand experience of cutting-edge research into next-generation wireless communications, converged access networks and embedded systems.

The following modules are indicative of those offered on this programme. This list is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation:

- Communication Networks (15 credits)
- Signal & Communication Theory II (15 credits)
- Embedded Real-Time Operating Systems (15 credits)
- Research Methods & Project Design (30 credits)
- Digital Signal Processing (DSP) (15 credits)
- Wireless/Mobile Communications (15 credits)
- Computer & Reconfigurable Architectures (15 credits)
- MSc Project (60 credits)

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credit from all the modules. For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.
