The School has over 400 teaching/research staff and a student body of over 7000 and have campuses in Southwark, South London and Havering in Essex. The Southwark campus hosts a state of the art facility including 14 inter-professional skills laboratories and the Havering campus provides high quality educational facilities.

The course provides a detailed exposure to the context, issues and methods used to analyse the increasingly complex problems which are found in the defence environment and to support decision making. It exposes the types of analysis and allows practical experience of tools and methods which are used, ranging from judgemental analysis through mathematical techniques to models and simulations. The course includes judgemental elicitation and analysis techniques, mathematical analysis methods (including optimisation), war gaming and combat modelling, logistics modelling and simulation methods. The use and utility of all the methods are explored through practical exercises and studies.

Course overview

The modular form of the course, consisting of a compulsory core and a selection of Standard and Advanced modules, enables you to select the course of study most appropriate to your particular requirements.

Standard modules normally comprise a week of teaching (or equivalent for distance learning) followed by a further week of directed study/coursework (or equivalent for part time and distance learning).

Advanced modules, which will enable you to explore some areas in greater depth, are two week (or equivalent for part time and distance learning) individual mini-projects on an agreed topic in that subject, which includes a written report and oral presentation.

On successful completion of the course you will be familiar with the technologies, methodologies, principles and terminology of Modelling and Simulation as used across defence, including the challenges and issues as well as the benefits. Format

The Higher Diploma in Statistics consists of coursework divided into nine core modules. These modules are a blend of theoretical and applied statistics.

Students attend an average of 12 lectures, three tutorials and three computer practicals per week over the 24-week academic year. All modules have elements of continuous assessment which you submit throughout the course.

The course focuses on the implementation of real-time 3D applications using the C++ programming language in order to develop your understanding of 3D rendering and shader programming techniques.

Format

Each module typically consists of 24 lectures, 12 hours of continuous assessment, plus additional supplemental reading and study, carried out over one of two 12-week semesters from September to December (Semester 1), or January to March (Semester 2). The exact workload in each teaching period will depend on the choice of modules. In addition, a substantial weekly commitment to the project module ME6019 is expected over both semesters.

Assessment

Individual modules have different methods of assessment but this typically consists of a single end-of-semester examination in December or April/May, plus continuous assessment throughout the relevant semester. This continuous assessment may consist of a combination of in-class tests, formal laboratories or practicals, design exercises, project work, written reports and presentations. Any repeat examinations are held in August.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. About the programme

In many engineering organisations ERP is the main software system application that controls and assists in the management of all functional departments and the whole facility, often globally. This unique programme has a UK and global appeal for career development and future plans are currently being developed to offer SAP ERP certification. It satisfies both the operations management and continuous improvement (CI) elements within engineering, and the application of ERP systems such as SAP and/or Oracle. More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

The demand for trained practitioners in environmental assessment at both the project level (environmental impact assessment (EIA)) and the strategic level (strategic environmental assessment (SEA)), and related environmental management fields continues to grow. To meet this demand, the MSc programme in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management provides an opportunity for specialist study in this area. It will provide you with a thorough, stimulating and practical post-graduate education in EIA and related areas.

You will gain:
-An integrated course of studies to equip you to undertake the planning and management tasks associated with the principal stages of environmental assessment.
-Opportunities to pursue particular aspects of environmental assessment, or wider environmental management, in greater depth by a choice of assignments and by undertaking research on an individually selected dissertation topic.

We give you a sound knowledge of the process of EIA and related areas, including planning for environmental change and environmental law, before building upon this with more teaching on the appraisal of projects and auditing. The MA EIAM is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under their Environment Specialism. It is also accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a specialist Masters programme.

Aims

The course allows you to gain an understanding of theories and techniques in parallel with developing skills in analytical decision-making, design and management.

The course consists of six core course units, plus one optional course unit which can be chosen from a selection of modules taught within the School of Environment, Education and Development or other related schools across the University. You must also complete a dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. The part-time route is not on a day-release basis and there are no evening or weekend course units available. Therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and check the timetable to ensure that you can attend the compulsory classes. You should also seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

We assess you through the submission of essays, reports and other work (e.g. workshop assignments), both individually and in groups. Some optional course units may involve examinations.

The taught part of the course (120 credits), is assessed by continuous assessment and formal examinations. Continuous assessment includes essays, reports, posters, oral presentations, and a major project.

A 15,000-word dissertation is prepared on an approved topic, which is discussed and chosen at the beginning of the second semester and a suitable supervisor allocated. Initial work focuses upon an overview of he chosen topic, a literature review and the design of the methodology to be adopted. During the latter part of Semester 2 and the summer vacation, you undertake the necessary research and analysis, culminating in the writing of your dissertation.

The Banking and International Finance course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, mainly dedicated to:

• An introduction to careers in finance and the opportunity to speak to representatives from over 75 companies during a number of different industry specific fairs.
• A refresher course of basic financial mathematics, statistics, computing and electronic databases.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:
• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• five electives (10 credits each)

• three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)

• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Banking & International Finance, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination.
