The Department of Health Science offers a Master of Arts in Health Studies. This program is tailored to train Health Promotion professionals to design, implement and evaluate interventions to foster behaviors conducive to health. All of our graduate programs are theory-driven and based on related research findings. Completion of the Master of Arts Program qualifies students to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam. The CHES certification, offered by NCHEC, is the only mechanism for demonstrating competence in Health Education in the US.

Program Guidelines: This 30 semester hours program has a core of 18 credit hours of required coursework and requires an additional 12 credit hours of electives. The entire Masters program can be completed on campus or via distance education (http://bamabydistance.ua.edu//degrees/ma-in-health-studies-online/).

**Students may transfer 12 graduate credit hours into the program (subject to advisor approval) or take a minimum of 12 credit hours of electives, independent study, or fieldwork courses from UA. Transfer credits can be no older than 6 years from the date the student graduates from UA.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS

All students are required to pass a six hour written comprehensive examination that addresses the content of the six core courses in order to obtain their Master of Arts degree. This exam is proctored and students may not use any outside resources. Each one of the two parts of the exam is graded as “passed”, “passed with contingency”, or “failed”. Sections “passed with contingency” require additional work before the contingency can be lifted. Failed sections must be retaken. Failed sections can only be retaken once.

You will have the opportunity to gain professional qualifications in Prince2 Foundation, Prince2 Practitioner and Agile Project Management Foundation.

The final stage of the programme will include a Project Management consultancy project or Project Management Dissertation. The consultancy project will allow you to undertake a project in one of a number of different industries and can address the different aspects of project or programme management. If you do not wish to take this opportunity, you will complete the Project Management Dissertation, which will allow you to explore, in depth, and critically review literature about issues related to a particular aspect of project management in your chosen area.

Methods of Learning

You will be taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their own subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lectures and workshop sessions, with an emphasis on participation and discussion.

For those students wishing to take up the option of a 12-month placement, the course will be 24 months in duration. For those students not wishing to take this option, then the course will be completed in 12 months.

The programme is completed by full time study on Park Campus. Normally, you will complete two semesters of 14 weeks, spending 12-15 hours per week in the classroom with your tutors and fellow students. You will be expected to engage in significant additional study, around 20-25 hours per week in self-directed study, learning and networking and attending additional workshops to support your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. The full-time programme normally runs twice a year with September and January starts.

Assessments

You will experience a variety of assessment styles including business reports, essays, research papers, oral presentations, practical work, examinations, case study and context analysis, as well as the dissertation.

There is an opportunity to take a one year placement, which will allow you to develop and apply the necessary skills and abilities required to undertake complex business projects and reflect on your experiences.

The consultancy project will allow you to undertake a project in one of a number of different industries and can address the different aspects of project or programme management. Course content and structure

You will take a core course plus five elective courses in the first two terms before concentrating on your Special Study in the third term. The Special Study may be a Composition Portfolio (up to two pieces with a total performance time of 18-20 minutes), a Dissertation (12,000-15,000 words) or a Recital (lasting no more than 60 minutes). The core course and each elective count for 12.5% of the MMus degree, while the Special Study is worth 25%.

On completion of the course graduates will have:

- a critical understanding of the nature of professional musical, musicological and/or compositional activity at the highest national and international levels

- familiarity with the most important and sophisticated issues, techniques and literature relevant to the chosen area of musical enquiry/expertise

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Current and applied research is essential underpinning for a high quality postgraduate programme. Our academic staff are involved in a broad range of risk-related and business-focused research and publication.

Teaching And Assessment

A supportive studio design culture ensures that you will learn as part of an educational community, sharing knowledge, precedents and techniques in replicating architectural practice. You will be encouraged to make extensive use of the department’s design studios, workshops, and computing laboratories to develop knowledge, skills, techniques and understanding. Architecture is a design-led discipline, and at least half of your study time will be focused upon the development of key architectural design skills, via the use of real-life studio design projects. Our research into Disaster and Development was ranked by judges representing UK Government Departments and Research Councils among the top 20 impact case studies within the Research Excellence Framework for contribution towards global development. DDN has been researching and facilitating the implementation of disaster risk reduction strategies to improve community resilience in some of the world’s poorest communities since 1994, working with communities in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Nepal, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Northumbria is one of three Europe wide groups to represent Europe and Africa in the new Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes, and a leading member of a new UK national research network for implementing the UK research strategy for the Sendai Framework.

Taught units provide intensive training in research methodology, experimental design, statistical analyses and data interpretation. Skills training in verbal and written communication is also emphasised.

The core of the programme is an eight-month research project, conducted within one of the University of Bristol's internationally recognised research groups in either the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. Opportunities will be available in laboratory or clinical-based investigations.

The programme is suitable for medical, dental and veterinary students interested in pursuing a research-intensive intercalation option after three years of study. Unit 2: Further Research Methods in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit aims to develop further knowledge and practical experience in statistical analyses, experimental design and laboratory methods and includes training in the use of a statistical software package and practical experience in several laboratory techniques.

Unit 3: Project Proposal in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit involves planning and writing a research project proposal (4500 words), which includes a literature review, aims, impact, research plan, ethical considerations, contingency plans, timetable and references.

Unit 4: Research Club in Health Sciences Research (10 credits).
This unit aims to develop your ability to present, critically evaluate and discuss scientific findings by contributing to journal clubs, attending and summarising research seminars and presenting your own research.

During this unit you will gain extensive experience in scientific/clinical research by conducting an independent project related to an area of interest to you. In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing global business environment, the management of risk requires a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience.

The MSc Risk Management programme provides an in depth understanding of risk and their application in practice both for financial and non-financial organisations. Students will learn both theoretical and practical understanding of risk including risk measurement and modelling using computer software (e.g. Palisade Decision Tools). In addition, we subscribe to several industry linked databases (e.g. Thomson Reuters EIKON) that students can use in their study and research.

Accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), this programme is designed to provide you with the skills to excel in a role as a risk manager, risk and insurance manager, risk analyst or clinical risk manager within a variety of organisations and sectors.

You will develop the ability to establish risk policy and structures for business units, design and review processes for risk management, develop risk response processes including contingency and business continuity programmes.

Our programme is based on current research and publications in the field, and taught by staff who understand the key concerns of managers in both the private and public sectors.

The focus of the degree is on equipping the professional ‘risk manager’. This role neither sets strategy nor runs operations - the professional risk manager (whether in private manufacturing or service industries, local government, healthcare, or non-profit sector) facilitates the risk management process, educates, informs and motivates others to manage risk, and provides expert advice and input on the tools of modern risk management. Teaching And Assessment

In this rapidly expanding field, you will learn through real scenarios and case studies, live research projects, developing your personal and professional responses to disaster and development challenges.

Guided through lectures, seminars and workshops by staff with vast experience in applying their expertise to current world issues, you will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to prepare for, take action within, and recover from a crisis. You will develop research and methodology skills. You will also develop a specialism in an area such as health and wellbeing in disaster management, integrated emergency management, or exploring a specific thematic subject of your own choice. The course culminates in a Masters dissertation which can take the form of a traditional research dissertation or a work related project.

Assessment is designed to provide an authentic learning experience, using techniques and approaches common in professional practice and subject-based academic research and consultancy. We provide constructive ongoing and forward feedback to develop your understanding within and between modules.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

We also make use of technology in module delivery. Modules take a ‘virtual field study’ approach where real-world examples are brought into the classroom via video clips, podcasts and online discussions with external experts and practitioners.

Our research into Disaster and Development was ranked by judges representing UK Government Departments and Research Councils among the top 20 impact case studies within the Research Excellence Framework for contribution towards global development. DDN has been researching and facilitating the implementation of disaster risk reduction strategies to improve community resilience in some of the world’s poorest communities since 1994, working with communities in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Nepal, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Northumbria is one of three Europe wide groups to represent Europe and Africa in the new Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes, and a leading member of a new UK national research network for implementing the UK research strategy for the Sendai Framework.

Our graduates work in roles, for example, as a: Emergency Planner or Emergency Planning Manager; Disaster and Development Academic and/or Researcher; Business Contingency Manager; Humanitarian and United Nations Consultant; Deputy Head of Field Officer of the Office of the United Nations for Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA); and are often working for the Environmental Agency, Local Authorities and International, National, Regional and Local Non-Governmental Offices - often at managerial level.

A number of students who already worked in the sector have subsequently progressed to senior roles in United Nations bodies, World Vision and UK Emergency Planning. Modules

This module is provided as part of this interdisciplinary Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The Framework enables students to create an individualised programme of study that will meet either their needs and/or the employers’ needs for a changing diverse workforce within a modern organisation.

The modules and academic awards are presented in areas representing employment practice or work based or clinical disciplines.

Whilst some students can build their own academic awards by choosing their own menu of module options, other students will opt for a named academic award. The Framework also provides the option for students to move from their chosen named award to another award if their job or personal circumstances change and they need to alter the focus of their studies. The majority of named awards also offer students, the option of choosing at least one module, sometimes more, from across the Faculty module catalogue enabling them to shape their award more specifically to their needs.

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies.
