Our Graduate Diploma in Dance Studies (GDDS) is an enriching and stimulating programme designed to support your artistic development. It is a flexible programme based on a professional development model, with in-depth training in core areas of dance practice combined with a range of options. You can select aspects of dance study to help you work towards your goals, within a vibrant and challenging environment that encourages independent learning alongside shared practice and collaboration.

You will develop your practice through in-depth training in core areas of study: contemporary dance technique, devising and performance, choreological practice and choreography. You will have further opportunities to broaden your experience and understanding of dance by selecting from a range of electives covering different aspects of dance, as well as practical applications of the art form. Assessment

Achievement of the Diploma in Dance Studies requires you to pass 120 credits as detailed above. Each component you select will be assessed separately, some by coursework assessment, others by written or practical assignments.

As a condition of acceptance onto the Trinity Laban Diploma in Dance Studies, overseas students are required to register for the ATCL Performance Arts (Contemporary Dance) qualification accredited by Trinity College London (TCL). This will require you to go through a registration process at the commencement of the academic year, and an assessment day at the end of your programme. Entry for this additional qualification is also open to, but optional, for UK/EU students.

Careers

There are a range of possibilities, depending at what stage in their training / career people enter the programme. GDDS graduates work as independent artists, performers, choreographers and teachers. The programme may lead to further dance training or study at Masters level.

Each component you select will be assessed separately, some by coursework assessment, others by written or practical assignments. At the end of the programme, you will receive a transcript detailing the components studied and assessed, and will be awarded a Trinity Laban Independent Study Programme Certificate.

Graduates have embarked on, or re-entered professional practice in: dance performance, choreography, dance teaching and dance management.

Our programmes explore interdisciplinary elements of dance science, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning and somatics. They explore the scientific issues underlying dance performance, technical training, and dancer health and injury prevention, looking at ways to optimise the body's performance, improve training techniques and enhance performer potential.

Format

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

Our programmes explore interdisciplinary elements of dance science, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning and somatics. Year on year, graduates are successful at obtaining employment within the field as researchers, lecturers, consultants and dance science advocates, with several graduates now leading similar postgraduate programmes at other HE institutions.

Trinity Laban is the only institution where intensive, conservatoire-level art form training sits alongside applied study in community dance. The programme has four key strands:

• Artistic development. Progress your dance skills and artistic practice in a world-class conservatoire with first-class teachers and facilities

Programme Information

Transitions Dance Company has gained an international reputation for the technical excellence of its dancers and the originality of the work it performs. This programme will give you the opportunity to work with outstanding international choreographers, culminating in an international tour. In the past, choreographers have included Rui Horta, Liz Aggis, Della Davidson, Yolande Snaith, Lea Anderson, Mark Murphy, Jamie Watton, Jasmin Vardimon and Jan De Schynkel.

As a member of Transitions Dance Company, you will work within a professional company environment, taking daily advanced level classes in both contemporary dance and classical ballet. These will be supported by classes in fitness and somatic techniques. You will work with professional performers and dance educators, rehearse repertory pieces, and actively engage with professional choreographers in the creation of new works. The company tours nationally and internationally, giving you a professional performance experience in a diverse and challenging repertory.

Programme Content

This challenging experience will help you grow into a performer who will contribute effectively and creatively to the profession, not only as a practitioner but as an articulate advocate for performance and performance practice. By advancing your skills, you'll have the opportunity to formulate a deeper understanding of the technical and artistic complexities inherent in performance. You'll be encouraged to critically reflect on your development in the studio and in wider theoretical contexts.

Course summary

Attain the knowledge and tools to open a window into dance in any period and in any part of the world.

Explore the place of dance in society from the perspectives of those involved as dancers, dance makers, teachers and/or audience members. By studying these perspectives, you will learn how different people around the world understand dance and how dance influences their value-systems.

MA Dance Anthropology investigates dance from a non-Eurocentric perspective, placing the practices and values of the dancers into socio-cultural and comparative understanding. At the heart of the programme, is a focus upon ethnographic approach in dance to experience first-hand different cultural approaches to dance practice. You will interpret your findings from the field in light of contemporary debates in dance anthropology.

It will interest you if you wish to study non-Western, folk, social, or ritual dance practices, but the approach can be applied to ballet or Western theatre dance, too. This course provides a way to contextualise dance practice and deepen your understanding of dance and specific practices that helps define our humanity.

The Department is home to the internationally-recognised Centre for Dance Research, which foregrounds the research of dance as cultural and artistic expression beyond, and including, theatre performance. Through seminars, forums and conferences involving staff and international invited guests, the centre supports a compelling research culture.

We also have excellent links with dance companies and creative organisations. In easy reach of London’s vibrant dance scene, the campus has superb studios and a state-of-the-art theatre for dance students.

Content

The learning and teaching methods on the MA Dance Anthropology programme are designed to provide a range of opportunities for students to be introduced to new ideas and topics, to enhance understanding and to hone critical thinking and research skills.

You will take the compulsory research methods module Ways of Knowing and one compulsory programme core module and there is flexibility built into the programme to modules that suit your interests. 

In Ways of Knowing, a module shared with students of all dance postgraduate taught programmes, you will be introduced to research methods, including ethnography, dance analysis, and practice-as-research.

In Anthropology of Dance, you will be introduced to the multifaceted history of the anthropology of dance and making you experience what ethnographic fieldwork is all about.

Dissertation is an individually tutored module that allows you to delve deeply into a research project that reflects your interests and experience in dance.

Dive into expanding theatre and dance and interdisciplinary dramaturgy

In this programme you will learn how to investigate and reflect on the dynamic ways in which theatrical and choreographic practices respond to a society in transition. This programme welcomes both Dutch and international students who are interested in dramaturgy, programming and curating, critical writing and art criticism, as well as arts professionals who wish to enrich their practice through academic research.

Contemporary performance practices are increasingly hybrid projects that approach and transcend the borders of theatre, dance, visual arts, music, media and daily life. Theatre and dance are inextricably linked with other media that shape our reality; they extend beyond the theatre’s walls and inject themselves into our daily lives. Theories and concepts derived from the performing arts are progressively deployed in cultural theory and (social) science. Such a field in transition demands an approach that studies theatre and dance as intermedial and interdisciplinary phenomena, and addresses the interrelationships of these phenomena, the audience and the socio-cultural context.

This dynamic is the focus of our Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy programme.

A situated perspective with a practical orientation

Fully taught in English, this Master’s programme takes an academic approach to contemporary performance. We closely collaborate with the field of theatre and dance in the Netherlands and Flanders, internationally regarded as the forerunners of the exciting new trends that emerge on the European stage. You will get acquainted with state-of-the-art theory yet we are also actively oriented towards the practice of theatre and dance. This is exemplified by the focus on dramaturgy, an internship in the second semester, and the many opportunities to meet with practitioners, build-in components within the programme and closely related to the staff’s expansive network.

After graduation

  • You are an independent thinker who is able to reflect critically on contemporary theatre, dance and performance.
  • You will be acquainted with the latest developments in theatre, dance and dramaturgy, and with affiliated contemporary critical and theoretical approaches.

Mapdance is the University of Chichester’s touring performance company and offers dance artists, the chance to undertake a Masters degree or Diploma level in the UK’s leading Practice as Research department. It is an intensive year of training and provides performance opportunities to a variety of theatres, arts centres and educational settings.The programme enables students to develop their dance practice as a performer. Options to study as an Independent Researcher or Choreographer, individually or in collaboration with other artists, are also available. There are also opportunities to engage in leading research with interactive technologies.

Mapdance has worked with cutting edge choreographers including Shobana Jeyasingh, Charles Linehan, Liz Aggiss, Gregory Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre, South Africa), Ben Wright, Matthias Sperling, Ben Duke (Lost Dog) and Darren Ellis.

Performers studying for the Postgraduate Diploma do not present a dissertation but are able to develop skills to support their practice with the opportunity to select one optional module. Students undertaking the Pedagogical Approaches module take part in educational work on tour linked to the mapdance repertory.

The flexibility of the programme means that you can achieve your postgraduate diploma after successful completion of modules to the value of 120 credits, or you can continue your studies to attain 180 credits and include the Dissertation module to achieve the MA.

Recent Dance graduates have achieved a wide range of successes since moving into areas of performance, teaching, administration, postgraduate study and research.

The Postgraduate Diploma will equip you for a range of careers in choreography, performing arts, dance development, arts administration, performance, teaching or dance research. You can also continue to further study at masters level.

Dancers from mapdance have gone on to work with many companies as performers or arts managers, including Lila Dance (Choreographers and Arts Council-funded touring company) Udifydance, Balletboyz, English National Ballet, South East Dance, Rambert Dance Company to name a few.

Course detail

The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full-time) or two year (part-time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full-time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work. MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame.

The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon prior experience and future aspirations.

Purpose

Dance Professional Practice is for experienced professionals in the fields of dance, performing arts or humanities, such as dancers, choreographers, academics, teachers and somatic practitioners.

Format

Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Career progression

All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Some graduates go on to work freelance, creating and performing their own work. Some graduates go on to become dance industry professionals, taking roles within arts management, and others go on to further study.

This Research Master's programme in Media, Art and Performance Studies is an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research-based programme which offers an advanced training in academic research skills appropriate for today's highly dynamic and interdisciplinary field of media, visual arts and performance.

Cultural trnsformations

Contemporary media, art and performance increasingly play with and transcend disciplinary boundaries. Intermedial and performative practices both produce and critically investigate cultural transitions in today’s mediatized and performative culture. Such synergies invite to explore how emerging forms of media, art and performance – while historically and culturally embedded - interact with and relate to social and cultural transformations.

Emerging media, art and performance

As a student of this programme, you will be introduced to and specialise in new research areas and methodologies, necessary for investigating emerging media, performance and contemporary art forms within today's rapidly changing culture. In relation to this you will also reflect on the role of the Humanities in both academic and public debates.

A mediatized culture and society

Central concerns in this programme are, amongst others:

  • the role and meaning of (visual) media in a mediatised society, inter- and transmedial practices in theatre, dance, film, television, digital media and visual arts

Comparative approach

We approach this broad field from a range of comparative and intermedial perspectives, focusing primarily on the dynamics of change and exchange between media, contemporary arts and performance within a culture and society in transition.

Research questions

In this programme you will reflect on questions such as how media have developed from the time of early cinema up to current new media art; how the definition of 'live' has changed alongside these mediatised cultural forms. How has the performative turn changed the ways we think about audiences? How do media technologies facilitate new methods of self-staging and social performance? What is the influence of media and technology on way we curate and educate in museums and archives and other cultural institutions.

In this age of selfies, datafication, (self-) staging and re-staging, and playful learning, you will examine how various media, art forms, and performance have been used for critical analysis, civic engagement, entertainment and educational purposes. You will do this by asking how digital technologies, dramaturgical and artistic strategies alter ways of dealing with knowledge production and distribution, and how these transitions have contributed to and also ask for new methods of research.

How does the ubiquity of media technology change our understanding of the world and our sense of self within it, as well as how we communicate and act?

After graduation

This programme will train you as a researcher within the field of Media, Contemporary Art and Performance Studies, to either prepare you for a PhD position, or for research-oriented positions in professional contexts of cultural institutions such as archives, museums, art institutions, theatres, for education, (non-)governmental organisations, or in creative industries.

Our facilities

Our dance facilities include four superb dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre and a 110-seat studio theatre. In addition, there is a newly refurbished large gymnasium space together with two new sprung-floor spaces in the new academic building. Our students will use the facilities within our dance technical team to enhance their understanding of scenography, sound and cameras, and the editing suites to support their choreography and creative practice situated in the Learning and Information Zone of the library.

Your research skills will be facilitated through the formulation and realisation of a self-directed research project in broadly based dance practices, which underpin the MA programme. You will be expected to contextualise your work in the light of contemporary developments in dance research.

Dissertation module:

The Dissertation emphasises independent research where you select an area of investigation with the advice of tutors. This may arise from earlier modules studied on the degree. The research may focus on performance practice, professional practice (i.e. teaching and community dance practices) applied critical, historical or epistemological issues.

Explore the potential of performance design with this wide-ranging programme.

You’ll develop an awareness of the performance events and experiences that can be created with the aid of lighting, projection, settings and objects, puppetry, props, costume, sound as well as newer technologies such as digital and pervasive media. You’ll have space to experiment and come up with innovative and creative ideas for performance, while learning more about the theories and concepts that are shaping emergent forms of theatre, art and performance practice.

As you build up your MA portfolio you’ll engage with contemporary performance and arts practices – including immersive and participatory forms of performance, as well as those outside of the theatre – while considering the role they play in their wider social, cultural and economic landscape. This is the only research-orientated programme in the UK tailored towards academic and practical engagement with performance design.

You’ll be based in our purpose-built landmark building [email protected], with two professional-standard and publicly licensed theatres that regularly host works by students and visiting theatre companies. One of these is a technically advanced research facility, and both are fully equipped with the latest technology. A dance studio, dressing rooms and box office are also in the building, and our School includes rehearsal rooms, two black-box studios, costume construction and wardrobe stores, a design studio and scenic workshop, video editing and sound recording suits as well as computer aided design.

But our biggest strength is our links with external organisations, which give you the chance to get outside the theatre and explore performance in different environments. Our partners include Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse, the National Media Museum, Leeds City Council, Red Ladder Theatre Company, Limehouse Productions, Phoenix Dance Theatre, the National Coal Mining Museum for England, HMP New Hall, Blah BlahBlah Theatre Company, the BBC and HMP Wetherby.

Course content

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop an awareness of research methods and approaches in performance and the cultural industries. In Semester One, you’ll also take a core module which introduces you to key concepts, theories and ideas in performance design, exploring ideas such as visuality and the theatre, spectacle, audience experience and multi-sensorial performance.

This foundation will inform the rest of your studies, including your practice. In Semester One you’ll also work with a range of scenographic materials to develop your own creative practice, spending time in practical workshops alongside lectures where you’ll consider current issues and debates in performance design and the role of practice-led research.

In Semester Two you’ll apply all the knowledge and skills you’ve gained to an independent research project, which could be practice-led or a written dissertation on a topic of your choice. You’ll also be able to spend more time on your practice – you’ll have the chance to complete an individual project, or to collaborate with fellow students from across the School, or work on another small-scale research project based on a two-week placement in an external organisation. Alternatively you could choose from optional modules on topics such as audience engagement or debates on culture and place.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

This new programme, starting in 2013, combines diverse approaches to making and documenting performance. It draws on devising, physical theatre, directing, choreography, solo work and live art. The course is intended for graduate reflective performance practitioners to enhance knowledge and experience of a range of processes and forms in the areas of collaboration, composition, performance, directing and documentation. Practical sessions will include extensive contact with innovative performance practitioners, sharing a range of models of practice. You will be assessed on creative and critical responses to course content, and these could take diverse forms. The course addresses the centrality of different approaches to contexts in the world of work through the development of a portfolio of skills and increased capacities in documentation, as part of a means of self-representation for professional practice.

Department research and industry highlights

The Department is committed to theoretically informed research throughout the five major research groups that define our work:

Many research staff in the Department are highly respected as theatre makers and for their practice-based research. Within the Department there are directors, playwrights and dramaturgs, as well as international practitioners in dance, applied theatre and puppetry. Our extensive collaborations with leading artists and theatremakers working in the cultural sector, and our theatre spaces, ensure that we are able to develop practice-based research throughout our degree programmes and in the professional theatre.

Workshops and lectures are regularly offered to postgraduates by leading playwrights, directors, choreographers and practitioners, including Katie Mitchell, Rebecca Prichard and Jonathan Burrows.

Course content and structure

You will study three core course units and complete a dissertation. This is a new course for 2013 designed to respond to the growing interest in how performance practices inform and interweave with each other. The details of the course form are undergoing validation and will be placed on the departmental website as soon as available.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- enhanced and applied their skills as reflective theatre practitioners
- explored the scope of theatre studies and its critical and research methodologies
- developed their understanding of contemporary performance practices and its contexts
- experienced a range of ways of documenting practice to best represent their artistic concerns and focus
- developed their ability to undertake independent research and analysis.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of means including essays and performance analyses, practical projects as well as a final dissertation of 10-14,000 words. Practical projects are sometimes carried out in a group and may include an element of assessment for an individual's contribution to group working and direction. All students undertake a summer term practical project.

Employability & career opportunities

Our graduates are highly employable and, in recent years, have entered many different drama and theatre related areas, including careers in professional theatre, training and education. This course also equips you with a solid foundation for continued PhD studies and many of our students go on to advanced research.

The MA Choreography and Professional Practices draws on expertise from a number of professionals within the dance industry and is delivered in close relationship with a national dance agency, South East Dance based close by, in Brighton.

The degree incorporates opportunities for engaging in Continuing Professional Development opportunities such as workshops, career planning, master classes and residencies alongside the development of your own choreographic skills.

The MA offers an introduction to research methods in the arts and to strategies for documenting live performance practice and promoting your work to wider audiences.

It provides opportunities to pursue live performance practices as a choreographer and to consider how your work is situated in relation to the wider field of professional contemporary dance practice.

It allows for you to develop your own artistic voice and to explore single discipline or interdisciplinary practice-based arts research projects involving choreography, performance, fine art, music, installation, and so forth – led by you and your interest in performance making.

The MA is designed to cater both for students who wish to develop their dance-making skills in order to further their careers as reflective practitioners, and as a foundation programme for those hoping to pursue practical and/or theoretical research at M.Phil or Ph.D level.

The flexibility of the programme means that you can exit after successful completion of modules to the value 120 credits with a postgraduate diploma at Level 7.

For the award of the MA you need to attain 180 credits at Level 7 including the Dissertation module.

The MA Dissertation project can involve practical performance and or written work determined by your needs as a performance researcher and maker.

Our facilities

At Chichester, we teach in small groups and pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we have created for our students. The Dance courses are delivered on our Bishop Otter Campus where the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is the hub of your learning environment. It has two upper floors of library resources with dedicated areas for silent work or group study, while on the ground floor you will find the Support and Information Zone, Media Centre, Otter Gallery, Costa Coffee and a variety of IT resources. There are over 130 open access PC workstations, 45 Apple IMacs and ample printing and media facilities. A state-of-the-art wireless network offers fast internet as well as access to all our online resources. You will also have a dedicated subject librarian who will be available to help you access all the library resources you need for your course, both on the shelves and online. 

Our Dance facilities include four superb dance studios, a fully equipped 250-seat theatre and a 110-seat studio theatre.

The MA in Choreography and Professional Practices will equip you for a range of careers in choreography, performing arts, dance development, arts administration, performance, teaching or dance research.

It will also prepare you for further study i.e. PhD or professionally-related qualifications.

Work placements

The programme has an industry-facing identity facilitated through the relationship with South East Dance, the region’s dance development agency, and you will be able to draw on the skills and expertise arising from this partnership.

The programme includes opportunities for presenting your work at choreographic platform sharings, participating in artist networking opportunities, developing your marketing, fundraising and ‘pitching’ / presentation skills.

Guest lecturers will introduce you to issues affecting dance employment, and your learning is supported by individual tutorials and group meetings to discuss your progress.

Teaching and assessment

The Dance department is a leading provider of excellence in dance education and draws on the expertise of the teaching team. The team is made up of international professional dancers, choreographers, researchers, writers and directors. Each member of the team is renowned for his or her theoretical and practical expertise. You’ll work with, and learn from, a wealth of professional specialist tutors whose backgrounds stem from highly respected performance companies.

As an MA student you will have access to the lively arts research culture at the University including: regular full programmes of research presentations given by staff, web-based learning, research students and visiting artists/researchers, performances by visiting artists/companies, theatre trips to performance events, arts research training events and national arts conferences.

 Some of the optional modules enable you to work alongside students from other Masters programmes. Some of the course content will be delivered by staff from South East Dance both on campus and off campus at their base in Brighton and in off-site performance venues in Brighton, London and other regional venues.

Learning is assessed using various methods chosen as the most appropriate for demonstrating achievement of the learning outcomes for each module. All modules are assessed by means of programme work in the form of practical choreography presentations, essays, reports, presentations, learning journals, portfolios, online tasks and group working.

Students are expected to carry out an independent research project on a topic relevant to the field of choreography. For this module students are supported through seminar sessions and tutorials during the two semesters so that they can develop research skills which are essential for lifelong learning, career flexibility; and for professional practice as well as for personal and professional development. In addition, students have the option to become involved in a number of collaborative projects through which they can, as part of the degree, develop project management, time management and interpersonal team work skills.
